ith so many television shows dealing with the monetary value and the newsworthy, lottery-like “finds”in the world of art and antiques, it was refreshing tospend our summer at Garth’s receiving and reviewingstories focusing on the history, emotion and intrinsicvalue of objects. Sure, the hunt for special (read valuable)objects appeals on many levels (it is our business afterall), but Garth’s, in partnership with several leaders inthe art and antiques trade, hoped to simply inspire andpromote reading, research, and love of the objects to abroader audience this summer. The inaugural, national“Biography of an Object” writing contest (June 15through August 15) seems to have done just that!

Signing on to promote and support, as well as providejudges for the contest, were three of the top trade news-papers: Antiques & the Arts Weekly, AntiqueWeek, andMaine Antique Digest, as well as the popular online data-base Prices4Antiques.com. An especially effective notification was also sent out to libraries across the country which put the contest on the radars of teachersand librarians who touch the lives of future collectors.

Contestants were asked to create a brief fictional biography (prose or poetry) or a more studied, non-fictional account about an item of their choice, addressing similar questions to those one would ask ifwriting a biography of a person: Where are you from? What was your life like? What was your purpose?. Winners in all three age groups were announced on September 1 and we encourage you to check out thewinning submissions at our website, garths.com/contest.Maybe, just maybe, you will be inspired to enter or encourage someone to enter next summer!

Happy Fall! We hope to hear from you soon,Amelia & Jeff Jeffers

W For most antique objects, we'llnever know their complete history;but, for this gold thimble, a lovelylife across three generations cannow be shared with the world. Thefirst place winner in the adult division of our writing contest usedthe essay to compose a short genealogical history of her family.Lynda from California has much tocelebrate on her 80th birthday thisyear! Way to go, Lynda!
