4. Defining Green IT The Problem

With rising energy prices the need for using less is becoming more necessary. Green IT is one answer.

Currently no allowed in central government procurement of desktop PCs. Still allowed for School procurement.
Brominated Flame Retardants are contained in plastics used in the cases of electronics.
They are important to use in plastic as they prevent fire.
But they cause a health problem they seep out of the plastics and bio accumulate in the body.
Health problems associated with BFRs include cancer.

Poly Vinyl Chloride & Phthalate Plasticisers
PVC is safe, except in burning and manufacture
If burnt PVC emits Hydrochloric acid and cyanide gas.
Phthalate Plasticisers seep out of flexible PVC and scientific evidence suggests they cause heath problems relating to hormone imbalance.

DEFRA Quick wins (or Green Ticks) have mandated a minimum standard for reducing toxic content in procurement
The UK Government wants IT to be whole of life carbon neutral by 2015
