ECOBUILD SEMINAR
Global Warming & Greenhouse gases
Global Warming◦ Gradual increase of earth and ocean
temperature as the result of the built up certain gases
Greenhouse gases◦ Heat-trapping gases – CO2, CFC, CH4 &
NO2
Transportation, factories, Transportation, factories, electric city from coalelectric city from coal--fired fired plan produce COplan produce CO22

Equity
• Intergenerational equity: = Equity between
generations
• Intragenerational equity:= Equity within a
generation
Resource Depletion
Renewable Resources◦ Wind, water, solar…
Non-Renewable Resources◦ Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) and
minerals…
Sustainable rate of useSustainable rate of use of a of a nonnon--renewable resource is renewable resource is less than or equal to the less than or equal to the rate at which a renewable rate at which a renewable resource can be brought on resource can be brought on stream to replace it stream to replace it [[HHartwickartwick Rule]Rule]

Malaysia milestones in adopting SD
1974 – Environmental Quality Act (EQA)
Third Malaysian Plan (1976-1980) – preserve the natural heritage from the impact of population growth and industrialization.
Fifth Malaysian Plan (1986-1990) – EIA was introduced in 1988
Eight Malaysian Plan – the adoption and implementation of agenda 21. Malaysian Quality Life Index (MQLI) a measure of sustainable living.
Ninth Malaysian Plan – inline with the 9th principles of Islam Hadhari for continuing environmental stewardship using environmental planning tools EIA, Strategic environmental assessment (SEA), cost benefit analysis & market-based instruments.

Agenda 21 for Sustainable Construction in Developing Countries
Define as development needs to be pursued to achieve the state of sustainability.
More than 60 green building assessment tools related to sustainability and efficiency includes: BREEAM (UK) 1990, Green Globes (USA) 1996, SBTool (Canada) 1996, LEED
(USA) 1998, CASBEE (Japan) 2001, GREENMARK (Singapore) 2005, GBI (Malaysia) 2009, Greenship (Indonesia)
2012.GREENROADS (US)
Malaysia Green Highway Index (MyGHI) is a performance baseline standard designed to measure the level of greenness of highways in
Malaysia. MyGHI covers the fundamental elements of green highway development that are
suitable for the Malaysia condition.
