Who was Edith Cowan?Born in 1861 in Glengarry, Western Australia, Edith Dircksey Cowan believed education was the key to growth, change and improvement. Edith’s contribution to the development of Western Australian education was significant. She strove to achieve social justice and campaigned for the rights of women, children and families, for the poor, the poorly educated and the elderly. So it’s fitting that the oldest education institution and newest State university, Edith Cowan University, bears her name.
At Edith Cowan University (ECU), we understand that choosing a career is a challenging and important decision. In determining your area of study, my advice is to consider your interests and ambitions, what motivates you, and what will challenge you. LanguagesEnglish is Australia’s official language. However, because of the large European and Asian immigrant population, there is a wide range of other languages being spoken such as Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Malay, Tamil and Vietnamese.
ClimatePerth has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild wet winters; there is very little rainfall in summer with most of the rainfall coming in winter. However, even in winter, Perth still enjoys plenty of warm sunshine, so it is no wonder Western Australians love the outdoors.
ABOUT PERTHPerth, located in Western Australia (commonly referred to as WA), is Australia’s sunniest capital, averaging 3000 hours of sunshine per year. Perth is the only Australian capital where you can appreciate the beach lifestyle, savour world-class local wines, enjoy a beautiful ocean sunset and unwind in the bushland, all within a 30-minute drive from the city centre.

FoodStrong multiculturalism and immigration have contributed to Perth’s diverse cuisine. Indeed, Perth offers a wide variety of cuisines such as Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Mexican, Italian, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Indian, Japanese and Korean. Most restaurants use produce from local organic market gardeners and fresh seafood from local fisheries.
Time ZonePerth’s local time is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which is the same time zone as many countries in Asia.
BeachesAustralian beaches are considered some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and Perth beaches are a perfect example. Perth has 19 beautiful white sand beaches, so there is one to suit your needs: Cottesloe for swimming, surfing, and snorkelling (a definite favourite amongst teens and young adults); Scarborough for stellar windsurfing and surfing conditions; Trigg for surfing and catching the most magnificent waves; City Beach for body boarding or fishing; and Floreat for relaxing and enjoying the sound of the waves.

2016 PERTH CHILDREN’S HOSPITALCurrently under construction on the QEII Medical site in Nedlands, adjacent to Kings Park, the new $1.2 billion Perth Children’s hospital will replace Princess Margaret Hospital for Children.
2018 PERTH STADIUMThe new stadium will be a multi-purpose venue capable of hosting AFL, rugby, football (soccer) and entertainment events. RENTAL ACCOMMODATIONSome students choose to rent an apartment, townhouse or house on their own or with fellow students. Houses are usually more expensive than apartments and the rent varies depending on the size, condition and location. Private accommodation is either rented furnished or unfurnished.

OTHER EXPENSESYou will be responsible for purchasing textbooks and any equipment required for your course. The cost of these items varies widely from one course to another. Other expenses that you may incur include food, parking, consumables such as stationery and photocopying, as well as transport costs to and from university, including any work placements or off-campus activities.
LIVING COSTSWhether you live on-campus or off-campus, you should budget about $365 per week for your living costs. Please note that this does not include tuition fees, textbooks, running a car or holiday travel.
If you bring your spouse/children with you to Australia, you will need to allocate a significantly larger amount per week and you should consider additional expenses such as school fees and childcare costs (if applicable).
Overseas Student Health CoverIf you are applying for a Student Visa, you are required to arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before your arrival in Australia, and maintain cover for the full length of your visa.
OSHC is a basic health insurance product designed to be equivalent to Medicare (for Australian citizens). It covers emergency medical conditions, public hospitals and most of the costs of visiting a doctor. Please note that pre-existing illnesses may not be covered. Additional cover for private hospitals and supplementary services such as dental, optical and physiotherapy is available at additional cost.

Study Area SiestaThere’s no need to worry about being caught napping while studying, with ECU installing two sleeping pods in the Joondalup Campus Library to encourage students to take a short break when needed.
The EnergyPods feature a reclining bed with a visor to reduce outside light and noise while also providing privacy.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends a short ‘power nap’ of between 20 and 30 minutes to improve concentration, mood, alertness and performance.
The pods use sound, light and gentle vibrations to wake the occupant after a 20 minute period.
The sleeping pods are located in the Library’s new social learning space, which also offers collaborative learning spaces, whiteboards and additional computers.
Motion Capture Raises the Barre for WAAPA DancersElite dance students now have access to a state-of-the-art motion capture facility which aims to improve teaching and prevent injuries. The facility is the first of its kind bringing together motion capture technology and the expertise of a specialised biomechanist into an elite dance program. Based at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAPPA) at Edith Cowan University, the facility uses tiny markers on dancers’ bodies to map their movements
in 3D. The data can then be used to create video that can be used as part of teaching in reviewing individual dancer’s technique or even utilised in performance.
ECU Biomechanicist Dr Luke Hopper hopes the facility will be able to assist dancers in refining their technique to prevent injuries. “It is firmly believed in the dance industry that performing with ‘incorrect technique’ will cause injury, but there is a lack of scientific evidence that supports these beliefs,” he said. “We hope to provide a new form of visual feedback to the dancers’ of their movements using motion capture and see if this improves learning in dance training.”
For WAAPA Dance Lecturer Andries Weidemann there is huge potential in motion capture as a tool for both teaching and performance.
“Dancers learn by watching, copying and experimenting with movement on their own until they have integrated that movement into patterns that they can replicate easily,” he said.
“Seeing their motion captured and placed on an avatar gives the students a perspective that they have not had before and that this can lead to new insights about their performance.”
The motion capture facility will also be utilised by other research disciplines from across the University including animation.
The ECU Motion Capture Facility developed by ECU eResearch and supported by iVEC@ECU, is the only motion capture setup of its kind to incorporate the skills of a biomechanist directly into a university dance program.

Paramed London-BoundWhen the London Ambulance Service was facing a shortage of qualified paramedics in the United Kingdom, they turned to Edith Cowan University.
Third year paramedicine student Ben O’Regan has been selected by the service and will begin work after he graduates in July 2015.
“I just can’t wait to get over there and start working,” he said. “The opportunity to work in a city like London will be such a fantastic experience, I can’t wait.”
Mr O’Regan said having his skills recognised world-wide was one of the major benefits of ECU’s paramedicine course.
London Ambulance Service Director of Operations Jason Killens said they were recruiting Australian paramedics because of high increases in year-on-year demand.
“As well as recruiting from the United Kingdom, we’re recruiting Australian paramedics because their skills closely match ours and there is only a three-week familiarisation course and driver training before they can begin work with us,” he said.
Senior paramedicine lecturer David Reid said having the London Ambulance Service come and recruit graduates was confirmation of the quality of the course.
“The skills we teach our students are applicable worldwide,” Mr Reid said. “Having the London Ambulance Service come out to recruit our graduates is a huge sign of the calibre of our graduates.”
Bee WhisperingResearchers have developed an innovative non-invasive way to check the health of beehives by listening to their buzzing. By analysing sounds recorded inside beehives, researchers from the Centre for Communications and Electronics Research (CCER) at ECU have developed a technology that can detect the presence of pest infestations. The technology uses an artificial intelligence model to compare acoustic signature of recorded audio sample against signatures of known infested samples. Dr Iftekhar Ahmad from ECU’s School of Engineering said the technology had the potential to detect pests such as small hive beetle and varroa-mite, which pose a significant threat to Australia’s bees and agriculture sector. “About $2 billion worth of Australian crops are pollinated by bees each year, so an outbreak of pests such as varroa-mites here could be devastating,” he said. “Honeybees are known to change their acoustic behaviour when exposed to stressors. A technology that can detect this change and alert the beekeeper at an early stage of infestation can significantly reduce the damage.” The technology is equipped with wireless communication module which allows for 24/7 monitoring of beehives, even when located at remote sites.

Australian Awards ScholarshipsAustralian Awards Scholarships are long-term development awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
ECU is a participating university in the Australia Awards Scholarships, which provide opportunities for people from developing countries to undertake full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities.
The Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training.

Postgraduate Degree AwardsThere are two main streams of postgraduate programs to choose from – coursework or research.
CourseworkThe majority of our postgraduate coursework disciplines offer Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters level courses.
GRADUATE CERTIFICATEA Graduate Certificate is a great way to diversify your current skills and knowledge with courses of only three or four units. The best part is you can complete them in as little as six months of full-time study. Some Graduate Certificates require a completed Bachelor degree; however, many are available to people who have five years or more of appropriate experience in the field, regardless of your previous qualifications. A completed Graduate Certificate is a recognised pathway into many other postgraduate coursework programs.
GRADUATE DIPLOMAOur Graduate Diplomas comprise eight units in a particular discipline. They are available to you if you have already completed a Bachelor degree in any field and now wish to complete the equivalent of a major in another field, without attempting a second undergraduate degree. They generally entail one year of full-time study.
MASTERS BY COURSEWORK Masters by Coursework are designed to provide a body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments in the discipline and/or area of professional practice, and a knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the field of work and/or learning.
Course length varies depending on the level of your previous qualification and if that qualification is in the same discipline as the Masters course.
ResearchWHAT IS A RESEARCH DEGREE?A research degree involves the production of a written body of work that makes an original contribution to knowledge, normally known as a thesis. The research will be developed over a period of time and will involve identifying a topic, developing a proposal, conducting the research and producing the thesis.
For those disciplines with a creative component, the study may result in a creative work (such as a performance or literary item) plus an exegesis (critical explanation or interpretation) to accompany the study and reflect on the creative element.
MASTERS BY RESEARCHMasters by research degrees at ECU may be one or two years of full-time study depending on the discipline. Most involve one year of coursework or research skills development units before undertaking a year-long research program which results in the submission of a thesis or creative work.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHYThe Doctor of Philosophy is a supervised research degree involving a three-year full-time research program that culminates in the submission of a thesis or creative work plus exegesis. Candidates are expected to participate in seminars and workshops on topics of research and related study areas. A panel of supervisors will oversee the development and progress of the student’s research.
PROFESSIONAL DOCTORATEA professional doctorate combines both coursework and research over three years full-time study. These programs are structured for industry professionals to develop an in-depth understanding of the latest innovation and technologies within their fields.
INTEGRATED PHDThe Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) is a new pathway to a PhD. The new four-year degree includes a foundation year of research preparation followed by a three-year research program.
The one-year of coursework subjects include generic research training and discipline-specific units. The coursework component provides students with strategies for a successful research journey, appropriate research design and methodology, timely completion, and effective writing and communication skills. Elective units contribute to the skill set required for the thesis or project.
The minimum admission requirement is either a four year Bachelor degree with a weighted average mark of 70% or higher, Honours degree, Masters by Coursework, or the equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised university.

PERTH INSTITUTE OF BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY (PIBT)Perth Institute of Business and Technology (PIBT) is ECU’s on-campus academic and English pathway provider.
PIBT is a member of Navitas and is located on ECU’s Mount Lawley and Joondalup campuses. In association with ECU, PIBT offers University Pathway Programs for students needing academic or English preparation before entering ECU.
Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP)PIBT’s Post-Graduate Qualifying Program (PQP) is a non-award course designed to lead students into Edith Cowan University (ECU) Masters degrees. The program is designed for students who already have tertiary qualifications but have not qualified for direct entry into university Masters programs.
The program will equip students with the knowledge, skills and English Language Proficiency (ELP) for entry into Masters degrees in the Faculty of Business and Law at ECU.
The program is made up of four core units comprising three PQP units that embed and test academic rigour and language development, together with one discipline-based unit for which ECU will award advanced standing on transfer to the university. This program is taught on the Joondalup campus of ECU.
ENGLISH REQUIREMENTSThe minimum English requirement is IELTS 6.0 with no band below 6.0. Students who have an overall IELTS score of 5.5 with no band less than 5.5 must be packaged with 10 weeks of ELICOS and demonstrate English competency before enrolling in the PQP.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTSThe academic entry requirements are completion of an approved three-year qualification post Senior High School Certificate (or equivalent) as outlined at www.pibt.wa.edu.au/courses/ postgraduate-qualifying-program.
PROGRESSION TO ECU Students need to achieve a minimum 50 percent pass in all four units to enter their masters degree.

Academic English programs offered at PIBTPIBT offers the Academic English Program (AEP), which is designed for students who plan to study at university or who are interested in developing academic reading, writing, listening and communications skills.

School of EngineeringThe School of Engineering at ECU is one of the fastest growing engineering schools in Australia. Pathways to Engineering At ECU, we believe everyone with a capability and aspiration to study engineering, should have the opportunity to do so. Students who do not achieve the entrance requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering can enrol in the Bachelor of Technology where they can choose from four majors: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics and Communications Engineering. On successful completion of the first year of studies in this course, providing the Introductory Applied Mathematics and Introduction to Physics units have been passed or exempted, students may apply for a transfer to one of the Bachelor of Engineering courses. ECU’s Bachelor of Health Science course offers students the option to undertake two majors, or one major and a minor, in the area of addiction studies, health promotion, environmental health, nutrition, and occupational safety and health.

NewsworthyAt ECU, Law students have the opportunity to apply for a 12-week parliamentary internship program. As part of this program, students assume the role of research assistant on a topic nominated by a Member of Parliament.
In 2013, ECU Law student Rachel Robson applied for and was selected for this Parliamentary program. Her research paper was the subject of discussion in the WA Parliament in 2014 and is recorded in the Hansard. Rachel also won the ECU Vice-Chancellor’s Student Award in 2014.
