Edwardian Fete at Winterbourne GardensStep back in time on Saturday 26th May for a family day out, Edwardian style.

Winterbourne House and Garden is hosting an Edwardian fete, complete with lawn games, morris dancers, and traditional amusements.

There’ll be the chance to learn more about what Edwardians ate and why, visitors can also have a go at wearing Edwardian clothes with photographs to purchase to commemorate the day out.

A village fete wouldn’t be complete without a competition, and Winterbourne’s event is no exception. All visitors are invited to take part in ‘Bake, Make or Propagate’, with categories such as Best Victoria Sponge or Strawberry jam.

All participants must register their entry before the event and there is a small charge for entering. They

Remember Old Ladywood? If you have fond memories of Old Ladywood before the slums were cleared in the 70s then the Old Ladywood Residents Association (OLRA) reunion on 22 April is an event not to be missed.

If you stretch the boundaries a bit, Ladywood was a small town in its own right. It had Springhill Library, Dudley Road and the Children’s Hospitals, the Crown, Lyric, Edbaston and Ledsam cinemas, many schools, Monument Road swimming baths, the Tower Ballroom, Edgbaston Reservoir, churches of most denominations, pubs on many corners, shops, two breweries and an ice rink.

Also within walking distance there were the Botanical Gardens, a prison, an asylum and a workhouse.

Members of OLRA come from as far as the US and New Zealand to the annual reunions to meet up with other people who lived in the Old Ladywood area

before 1970 and to see the wonderful displays of old photographs of the area.

The group which was established in 1999 has more than 1600 members but there must be thousands more Old Ladywoodites out there who might want to join in.

Members receive a quarterly newsletter and an invitation to the annual reuinion, this year to be held on Sunday afternoon, 22 April at the Clarendon Suite, Hagley Road.

Details of membership or reuinion can be obtained from Gordon Cull (Chairman) on 02476 746 886.

Easter fun at macThere are some fantastic events coming up at mac birmingham this Easter to keep everybody entertained.

Kicking things off are Kid Carpet and the Noisy Animals who will be performing a new rock and roll musical for children on Mon 2 Apr. With an animal band featuring a gorilla, a bear, a hedgehog and a badger, it’s an adventurous tale recommended for ages 3-8, but adults will love it just as much.

Aoife Mannix will be helping children overcome their fear of fiends, spiders, aliens and dragons through the power of spoken word, music and digital game playing with her show Misunderstood Monsters on Wed 4 Apr, and there’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to the world of music and dance with Fleur Darkin’s Innocence between Mon 9 – Wed 11 Apr. It’s one

of two shows being performed at mac birmingham that week based around William Blake’s boyhood visions, and while the other (Experience) is geared more towards adult audiences, this imaginative show is suitable for ages 0-5.

If your children want to get creative, there’s also a great selection of hands-on sessions ranging from making hats and bonnets to exploring the world around them (Nature Explorers), as well as workshops the whole family can enjoy.

To find out more about what’s coming up at mac birmingham or to book tickets, visit their website www.macarts.co.uk or call 0121 446 3232.

Diamond Jubilee Tea PartyJudy Dyke Partner at Tyndallwoods Solicitors plans to host a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Tea Party in support of Edward’s Trust in May.

During the afternoon the work of Edward’s Trust supporting children and families during serious illness and bereavement will be showcased.

Representatives from the Trust, local celebrities and Father Christmas (yes we know it’s in May!) will join staff of Tyndallwoods and guests as we celebrate the momentous occasion of the Queen’s sixty years on the throne.

There will also be an exhibition of art work created by service users of Edward’s Trust ‘Expressions of Grief ’.

In recent months Judy has gathered a collection of Union Flag items to decorate Tyndallwoods premises at Woodbourne for the party.

For more information about the Charity please visit www.edwardstrust.org.uk or for details of the party contact Judy Dyke on [email protected]

Sarehole Mill taking a step back in timeSarehole Mill is set to turn the clock back to its heyday when it was an operational mill, with the help of funding from Birmingham City Council.

Thanks to the princely sum of £300,000 the plans are in place to de-silt the mill-pond enabling the mill-wheel to become fully functional again and grind locally sourced wheat. Some of the flour will be sold within the mill shop, some will be baked into bread on the premises and there are also plans to supply local artisan bakers.

This famous Tolkien icon is a well-loved local attraction and a central focal point

of the annual Tolkien festival. And with this being the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit part of the funding has gone towards exciting development of the Tolkien exhibition within the museum. The granary building is now home to a number of new displays detailing local Tolkien connections.

Phase one of this ambitious project is already underway with repairs having been made to the sluice gates. This meant that

earlier in the year the millpond had to be drained, revealing just how much silt there is to remove – up to a meter in some places. The pond will be refilled again this month and work will then begin in earnest in November in order to have as little impact as possible on local wildlife.

In November the pond will be drained again and de-silting will take place together with the removal of much of the reeds. Mill machinery will be repaired and there will be repairs made to the roof. Finally a bake-house will be established to enable on-site baking.

Over the winter a team of volunteers will be recruited and trained at Charlcote Mill by a professional miller. Up to fifteen

volunteer millers are needed to keep up a continuity of milling so if you would like to get involved then you can!

The aim is to begin milling during the summer next year, 2013.

Sarehole Mill Curator Irene De Boo commented: We wanted to bring Sarehole Mill back to life and that is now going to happen thanks to the generous funding from Birmingham City Council. It is vitally important for us to preserve this valuable part of our heritage.”
