Let’s start with the basics to have a better understanding of data and voice communication.

What is Ethernet: is a technology protocol for local networks (LAN). It set the communication standards such as cable length, transfer speed, data transfer, etc. Ethernet has become the defacto LAN communication standard replacing other technologies such as Token Ring, FDDI, and ARCNET.

What type of cable should I use: It depends on various factors, though most office environments would suffice with Category 5 and above for data and VoIP communication there are variables that may lead you to a one or the other.

Category 3: Obsolete, don’t even ask for it.

Category 4: Obsolete, mostly used in telephone networks.

Category 5: Twisted pair for carrying signals. Used for data, voice, and video. Don’t go for it, get Cat 5e instead

Category 5e: Enhanced Cat 5, it made improvements in noise cancellation and crosstalk. I recommend Cat 5e as the minimum for Data and VoIP runs. It’s available and affordable, most LANs would suffice with Cat 5e.

Category 6: Standard for Gigabit Ethernet, requires all communication components to be Cat 6 compatible to take advantage of its technology otherwise it degrades its performance. More expensive than Cat 5.


Do I need a patch Panel?: My answer is always yes, specially when I’m the one running the cables or managing the network. Though it is NOT required it really helps in organizing the network. Another huge incentive to use patch panel is that it helps in a layered security approach.

Should I Use T568A or T568B?: Doesn’t matter, just stick with the same standard from beginning to end and document it. I have seen T568B become the preferred standard in the past few years.

Do I need to hire a licensed electrician to run the cables for me? No, though it wouldn’t hurt to hire one, what you really want is someone who knows the codes and is experienced running cables.
