Edgewater“A Great Place to Live”

From the desk of Gregory S. Franz - Borough Administrator

Independence Day Celebration – The Edgewater Mayor and Council along with the Recreation Department are proud to present fireworks at Veterans Field on Friday, July 1 with a rain date of Monday July 5. Veterans Field will open to the public at 6:00 p.m. for children’s entertainment and activities, music, and food. The event is free except for the cost of refreshments. Bring a blanket and chair and watch the spectacular show produced by the Serpico Family of Newton, New Jersey’s International Fireworks Company since 1906, overlooking the George Washington Bridge and New York City skyline. The Edgewater trolley bus will operate along River Road and Undercliff Avenue between 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. so leave your car at home and walk and ride to the event. Inflatable rides, face painting, clowns, balloon toss are all available for the children, no alcoholic beverages permitted.

Route 5 Rock Stabilization Project – The New Jersey Department of Transportation will be performing a rock slope stabilization project along New Jersey Route 5 in Edgewater. This project calls for the removal and stabilization of rock along the cliff face. The work calls for approximately 28 days of full closure of Route 5 to perform the most dangerous work first. The borough requested that this work not commence until school ends in June so school transportation is not effected. At the conclusion of the 28 day closure, Route 5 will be open to east bound traffic only during working hours and during morning and afternoon peak hours, bi-directional traffic will be permitted. The Edgewater Police along with the Cliffside Park and Fort Lee Police Departments will work collectively in an attempt to keep traffic flowing and provide ample signage.

Borough Hall Moving Day – The Edgewater Police and Municipal offices are tentatively scheduled to move into the new Borough Hall at 55 River Road the weekend of June 17. Borough offices will be closed Friday, June 17 and Monday, June 20 and will reopen to the public on Tuesday, June 21 so that Borough staff can close down the old facility and prepare to open the new facility. We ask for residents’ cooperation if we do not respond in a timely manner during this period. Staff will be onsite and email and telephones should be operational by Saturday, June 18; however, we may be distracted in attempting to organize the offices and files. The Police Department should be operational in the new facility by Sunday, June 19; however, residents should not see any interruption in emergency service during this transition.

Crossing Guards NeededThe Edgewater Police Department is in need of crossing guards for the 2011-2012 school year.

Edgewater residents 18 and older can apply by filling out an application in the office of the Borough Administrator of Borough Hall. A valid New Jersey Drivers License is preferred. Standard back-

ground checks are performed and guards need to report to posts by 6:45 a.m. and again by 2:00 p.m.

EDGEWATER – “Home for the Holidays”By Gregory S. Franz – Borough Administrator

Page 4: Edgewater Residential | December 2012

By Bob BatchI am writing to you, not from some storm-

ravaged location in the tri-state area, as would a true correspondent, but from the stronghold where I watched endless hours of storm cov-erage during the disastrous hurricane last month. Would that we could have appeased the gods of storm and destruction with a sacri-fi ce of the heralds of doom that occupy every TV channel, standing waist deep in water stat-ing the obvious about unfolding events. But in-stead, millions suffered at the capricious hand of fate.

Beyond the very real and immediate ef-fects of the storm such as the decimated homes, businesses and infrastructure, there’s another impact on us all that’s hard to come to grips with in any practical way. These sorts of natural disasters, tsunamis, earthquakes, or tornadoes are beyond our ability to control. In a world where we thrive on the illusion that we are conquering the very forces of nature, the experience of being overwhelmed by the power of wind and water is kind of shocking.

There is a telling aspect to our relationship with nature in the fact that we actually name storms as though they were alive. Initially, they used only female names, to refl ect the fero-cious and changeable aspects of hurricanes, I guess, or more probably because only men were doing the naming. Now we use both male and female names, but in any case, we long to attribute some sort of human charac-teristics or divine personality to bad weather.

In the aftermath of the last storm we kept hearing about what ‘Sandy’ did, as if there were some person with malevolent intent to blame.

In what we now call ancient times events like ‘Sandy’, and other cataclysmic occurrences, were attributed to the wrath of unseen gods intervening in the affairs of man for their own purposes. Even today, there are people who claim to have some unique insight into the will of God, and propose that these events are ei-ther punishment or foretell even bigger disas-ters coming our way.

I suppose no one loves the possibility of impending disaster more than Insurance Companies, until they have to pay out money, of course. Since the storm they’ve upped the amount of commercials featuring people whose homes are wiped out and who are suf-fering various forms of despair. If only real life were like Insurance commercials where your very existence and happiness are nestled in the bosom of a friendly and magnanimous in-surance representative. You would almost be glad to have the misfortune befall you if it were true.

The one ray of light after all the gloom in the storm’s aftermath is the outpouring of help and goodwill that people demonstrated. It gives one hope when people show they care about the misfortunes of others. Despite all the indications that the world is on track to be-come a heartless, mad environment where “Me fi rst” is the credo of a population intent on squandering it’s resources and erecting shrines to materialism, the majority of people still seem to have a sense that we are all part of a human family and anyone might need an-other person’s help at anytime.

To me, that is the upside of these tragic events. Whereas as we my experience a

sense of foreboding and uncertainty about what future horrors could come from natural disasters, there is a revelation that we are all in these things together. When we are confront-ed with the breakdown of the fragile system of infrastructure around us, when we are all af-fected by interruptions of power, food supplies, water etc, we can hunker down in our survival shelter with automatic weapons like the char-acters on “Doomsday Preppers” or we can all cooperate and work together for the common good.

Yeah, there are always going to be people who loot during natural disasters. There are going to be people who look around and say “Well, I’m okay there’s nothing to worry about” But events like the last hurricane show that there are a lot more people who appreciate having First Responders in place. There are a lot more people who give money to the Red Cross. There are plenty of people who will volunteer to go help others try to recover from their devastation.

There is still hope for the world. It may sound like some new age mumbo jumbo to say that we are all interconnected and com-passion, giving and understanding is our best hope, but it is not new age really. It is the same message in all religions, but it sort of gets lost in all the rituals and ceremony. In the end we may all be angry, outraged, defeated or fear-ful when events beyond our control occur, but truly, the only way to heal is with the help and support of others, whether on a personal ba-sis or in society as a whole. It is something to think about for the holidays besides shopping.

Have you ever had bad dreams that can be truly frightening nightmares or feel that you are being tired down to your bed by restrains? If you have terrible nightmares, we can con-clude that in most cases you are stressed out and it attracts a bad spiritual influence. Also if you cannot sleep well, your mind that has some negative thoughts like worries, anxiet-ies, and fears for your future so on attracts negative energy. Remedies for Sleep Paralysis and Spiritual Restraints Breathing MethodsBreathing methods offer good approach. If you cannot move and there is nothing you can do about it, in order to regain your own spirit, you should try catching your breath. As you are lying down, try to breathe from the lower stomach area below the belly but-ton. The idea is to provide your body with fresh oxygen. Try breathing in, and if you are able to repeat this deep respiration several times over, strangely enough you will find that the evil spirits have parted from you. One of the secrets of this breathing method is that as you breathe, light will enter your body. When that happens, the negative influ-ences that are holding you down will let go. At that moment, you will be free. This is how to escape through the breathing method.

Positive Thinking and Self-ReflectionAnother method is to change your perspec-tive into a positive one. The fact that spiritual influence can approach you is evidence that the wavelengths given off by your mind and the wavelengths of the negative energy are the same, so in this case you should reverse the situation. You must eliminate any think-ing about negative things and look towards the light. Think only about wonderful, posi-tive things within your mind. This is another method for dealing with this threat.

Another strategy is to practice self-reflec-tion. Even if the weight on your chest pre-vents your body from moving and you can-not move your hands either, that does not mean that this restraint is extending into your head. Therefore, while lying down, engage in self-reflection. If you find yourself in such a situation, it means that as some point up to the prior day you have been having trouble with human relationships. In this situation, try thinking about the person with whom you get along the least, a person about whom you get along the least, a person about whom you think, “I can’t stand him”, or, “If only she wasn’t around.” If there is someone in your life who fits this description, then try think-ing of him or her and practice self-reflection, then try thinking of him or her and practice self-reflection. In any event, start with apolo-gizing to this person.

Giving ThanksNext, another method is giving thanks. One day is like a lifetime. If you live by this philosophy, then the end of each day corre-sponds to the end of your entire life. So you should give thanks by saying something like this: “It is my turn to leave this world. Now I can return to a pleasurable world. Looking back over my life on this earth, I can say that I truly had a good life. Thank you so much. Even if I should die here and now, I am sat-isfied.” By giving thanks like this, you will drive them away. This is another method for dealing with the problem. The next time you experience a bad dream, I suggest that you try our some of the methods explained above. Also before going to bed, if you practice breathing with positive thinking and self-reflection, and giving thanks would make you sleep well.

It is cowardly to personally require con-ditions to attain happiness. Don’t say, “Only if I had a million dollars,” or “Only if I had a better job,” or “Only if I can marry a wonderful person,” or “Only if I can graduate from a good school.” Imagine someone who is bright, posi-tive, and who always has constructive ideas and is burning with enthusiasm and hope. Would you care whether that person experienced illness, bankruptcy, or failure in education or a business? It is because people hold the dark shadow of failure that makes others think they are “unhappy people”. If a person has gotten rid of the dark shadow and is liv-ing brightly, positively, and with hope, that person is seen as a “happy person.” What if the world was fi lled with people who wake up in the morning and say,

“What a great morning! I’ll work hard again today. I’m not afraid of growing old. I want to keep working until my fi nal days. I’ll work hard to make the world a better place to live that is fi lled with many happy people.” Even if you couldn’t fi ll the entire world with happiness right away, if you were able to adopt that at-titude, you would have gotten rid of one drop of unhappiness from this world. That is absolutely possible to achieve. A radiant and happy life will open up just by having radiant and happy thoughts. In order to live a radiant life, do not make excuses. You must not think you will be happy if only a certain condition is fulfi lled. A splendid path will open up before the lives of people who make their own efforts with a positive attitude to create a bright future, regardless of

circumstances. Take courage and gath-er the will to open a path through the thick jungle. People who are capable of this are those who open the frontier of a whole new world. Do not think of con-ditions. Say good-bye to thoughts that begin with, “If I had…” or “If I wasn’t…” From this day forward, don’t think of reasons why you can’t be happy. Stop complaining. No one has achieved suc-cess by making complaints. If you com-plain, you are staining your mind with poison and also bringing negative feel-ings to other people. Complaints are like poisons. They make people suffer many times more. So, fi rst don’t complain, but that is not enough. Sow bright and posi-tive seeds in your mind in place of those complaints. This will result in beautiful fl owers growing inside your mind.

By Douglas E. HallDestruction and damage were everywhere from the storm that lashed across Edgewater on that terrible night of Oct 29. Early esti-mates placed storm damage at $400 million, but it will probably go higher as repairs and rebuilding takes place. Possibly the hardest hit area of the borough was the Hudson River waterfront along the northern part of the town. Grand Cove’s apart-ments and townhouses right on the river were mostly uninhabitable right after the storm, but 53 of the 60 units fi rst condemned for habita-tion right after the storm have undergone re-pairs including replacement of damaged wir-ing for occupants to return to their homes. A bit farther north, Von Dohln’s Marina was heavily damaged with wooden walkways and docks tossed around at crazy angles as if they were playthings of some giant striding up the Hudson River. Owner Joe Von Dohln put an estimate of $500,000, which includes replace-ment of equipment in his machine shop that was swamped with fi ve feet of water.Von Dohln is determined to stay in business and he has estimates coming in now to rebuild, just as he did 20 years ago when he suffered similar damage in a 1992 hurricane, “almost to the day,” he recalled.

Buildings condemned for habitation at 2 Hill-iard Avenue (20 units) and 980 River Road (eight units) have been repaired and rewired. The boiler had to be replaced at 2 Hilliard.Repairs to borough facilities have begun with an emergency allocation of $300,000 voted by the Borough Council on Nov. 19. Roof shingles on the new Borough Hall had to be repaired. Rooms in the First Aid Squad build-ing on River Road needed new sheet rock due to fl ooding and also needed a new emergency generator since the one they used while power was out for a week burned out. Water dam-age to the Edgewater Marina Building was ad-dressed by a recovery company, which dried out the building with large fans. The removal of several large trees in Veterans Field which fell across River Road during the storm along with debris from the fl ooding of the fi eld during the storm has delayed reme-diation of the fi eld including sodding the fi eld at newly created levels. If the laying of sod is delayed until the spring, remediation work will not be completed for a planned spring reopening of the fi eld. Borough Administra-tor Greg Franz suggested the fi eld may be re-opened on a piecemeal basis.Perhaps the biggest fi nancial problem left be-hind from the storm, is the River Walkway,

which was undermined and broken up at sev-eral locations along its three mile stretch of Edgewater waterfront. When the walkway was mandated some 30 years ago, funding to construct it was provided by developers who built along the waterfront. There was no fi -nancing provision for repairs that might be needed from storm damage. The walkway is vulnerable because being right at the edge of the river it takes the full brunt of any storm waves that crash the shore from the river. To make matters worse most of the bricks that make up the walkway were set in sand rather than concrete. In several places the walkway has been undermined by the pounding waves that washed away soil and sand under the walkway, creating small gorges into which the bricks fell. The result is that the walkway, while an at-tractive addition to the waterfront, becomes a fi nancial liability every time it is attacked by a severe storm. An expensive solution would be to build a concrete and steel bulkhead under the walkway. No doubt a bonding fund will have to be established supported by some spe-cial walkway tax. It may be commendable to build amenities, but it turns out there is a need for prudence among governing bodies when one considers the cost of maintenance.

change in the zoning ordinance to permit a new high rise zone at their December 3 Council meeting. Ordinance 1485-2012 was introduced on fi rst reading at the November 19 Council meeting. “An ordinance of the Borough of Edgewater, County of Bergen, State of New Jersey, amending and supplementing chapter 240 of the Borough code to eliminate the B-2A zone, create a new MXD-1, MXD-2, and MXD-3 zones and to amend and supplement certain other regulations including those provided for the R-5 zone.” The change was the result of a recommendation from both the Zoning Board and Borough Planner that will result in the creation of “vistas” along the Hudson River, or the creation of more views to the river and Manhattan skyline that often is obscured as a result of midrise development. The Edgewater Mayor and Council wish our residents a happy, healthy, and joyous holiday season.

After achieving an enviable record of wins as a professional boxer and kick boxer, New-ark native Maurepaz “Mambo-Kid” Auguste is moving to Edgewater as he builds a new activity in his life training young men to be physical fi t with the lessons of the martial arts of boxing and kick boxing. Toward that end he is planning to open a gym in Edgewater. The Mambo-Kid was born and raised in New-ark , after the infamous Newark Riot of 1967 that lasted six days. As a youth, Auguste fell frquently in trouble with the law. Auguste grew up with a gang that was known at the time as the "Double Deuce" because they were based on 22nd Street and 18th Avenue in Newark and the fact that there were 22 mem-bers of the gang. Sadly today there are only three members known to be alive and only two of them are not in prison. Auguste is one of the two.He feels that the martial arts of boxing and kickboxing is what saved his life and gave him the necessary positive opportunities sparking a spirit of ambition in him. It instilled in him confi dence and need to better himself to even-tually leave the environment that he labels, "The economic prison." At the age of 20 he changed his life around af-ter a near fatal accident. He recalls was forced to see the world as a new man and focused his abilities in more positive activities. A high school drop out, he went back to get his di-

ploma, went to college and focused on the martial arts, particularly boxing whole-heart-edly. The training in boxing and Martial Arts, he felt gave him focus and gave him avenues to pursue by sparking the spirit of ambition.

Auguste has actively competed in boxing and kickboxing since 1985, accumulating many amateur titles in both sports before turning Pro in 1997. He also started promoting boxing events in 1997 with W.A.R. Boxing Promo-tions under CEO Kurtis Ford. Aguste eventu-ally began to promote his own events. As a result, he realized early on the competitive na-ture of the sport and began to train with only the best names in the business. He sought work as a sparring partner and fi gured out that this is the best way to truly learn the tricks of the trade. He was successful in his endeavor, sparring with many of today’s world cham-pions including middleweight, super middle-

weight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions champion Roy Jones Jr., welter-weight champion James "Buddy" McGirt and welterweight and middleweight champion Fe-lix Trinidad . He also trained as a kick boxer under the tu-telage of Larry "Thunderfoot" Cureton, the WKO US Heavyweight Kickboxing Cham-pion. This education served him well, and as a result he won the U.S. PKF Super middle-weight kick boxing title in 2000 and then the WKO World Middleweight Full-Contact Kickboxing Title in 2001 at Madison Square Garden in New York City while also main-taining a 9 – 1 record in professional boxing. In 2001, he received a debilitating injury while defending his title and began to teach the combat sports in order to make ends meet. As a result, he became an instructor at a 5 star health club and at the same time discovered a lucrative new line of work. He takes his teach-ing seriously and because of his discipline and dedicated service, his diversifi ed clientele has grown exponentially.Mr. Auguste then set out to open a gym for the under privileged children that seek the same help that Mr. Auguste received. Thus, he named his foundation "the Warrior’s House", based on the principle created by a 16 century samurai by the name of Miyamoto Musashi. He opened up a gym in Amsterdam to reha-bilitate at risk youth and is scheduled to open three more similar gyms in Spain and one in the US.
