Students are often worried about making mistakes, but learning actually increases when we make mistakes. Encourage your children to take risks. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Thank you for your participation in our Parent/Teacher Conferences. As I said in the November newsletter, learning is a journey, not a race.

On the November 8th Election Day Workshop, the teachers and administration were involved in staff development, ent i t l ed , “Neurosc ience and the Classroom: Strategies for Maximizing Students’ Engagement and Potential.” Dr Judy Willis, M.D., M. Ed. was the presenter. What a wonderful day of learning for us! The ideas presented focused on recent brain research and how students learn. Here are some of the highlights, but if you like this topic, you can visit Dr. Willis’s website at

www.RADTeach.com.

We know that sensory input, emotions, and motivation are key in being able to learn. If a child is stressed or not engaged learning cannot take place. At

Edgewood, we work hard to create a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment. In addition the research also tells us that getting smarter is the result of practice. Information that we learn will only make it into our long-term memory if we practice. Reading every night, working on math facts are two simple ways to help make our brains smarter. Students are often worried about making mistakes, but learning actually increases when we make mistakes. Encourage your children to take risks. Elementary School is about making mistakes and learning from those mistakes. We know from students who play video games that they often make mistakes, but continue to practice to get to that next level. In sports, students practice in order to get better or to qualify for that travel team. We want our students to possess this same skill set when it comes to l earn ing . Together we can make Edgewood the best place to learn and grow.

As we end, 2011, I want to wish all of you a very happy and wonderful holiday season.

e l c o m e b a c k f r o m o u r Thanksgiving Break. Can you believe we are already in the

midst of the holiday season?  Our wonderful Holiday Shop is just around the corner. If you can, please volunteer to help out with the Shop.  Also, we need baking volunteers for our Faculty Appreciation Holiday Cookie Trays.  Sign ups for both of these are open on Sign-Up Genius.  I hope you have ordered your gift cards – if not, we’ve got 3 more Gift Card order dates in December.  Take advantage of getting all of your gift cards in one place – no running around to different stores to pick them up!  Need some nifty gifts – our Book Fundraiser and Spirit Wear – are available for immediate delivery! Thank you to everyone who participated in our Student Council sponsored Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive – we collected enough food to donate baskets to over 50 families.    Thanks also for coming out to our Villa Rosa Fundraiser.  Thank you to the teachers for hosting Parent Visitation Day and Parent/Teacher conferences.

The EBoard and Commit tee Heads continually evaluate our activities and events including how to make each one better.  As a result, here are some CHANGES that you will be seeing this year:

Our Art Fair has grown into an Art AND Literacy Fair.  Our committee head, Susan Carabello is working with our Art Teachers, Reading Specialists, and classroom teachers to come up with a great evening in April that showcases our students’ art work and literacy pieces.  Our goal is to open up the entire school to you so you can enjoy multiple pieces of work created by your children and their classmates.

Guy and His Gal Event – We have added this event for our boy students and their favorite adult gal to our event calendar this year!  Look for more information from Beth Brunette, our committee head, on this soon.

Gal and Her Guy Event – Already on our calendar for this year, we are rethinking the format of this event and are incorporating some fun activities for girl students and their favorite guy to do together.  We took cues from our previous, very popular, Guy and His Gal event and are planning a really special evening.  Look for more information from Kris Tyler on this “fun” night soon.

Barnes & Noble Night – We’ve moved our B&N Night from the busy holiday season to March.  This special evening will serve as our spring book fair replacing the spring Scholastic event.  Lisa Chipper is looking to really liven up this evening and make it a fun night for students of all ages!

I love feedback – please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Have a joyous and safe December.  Enjoy the days off!

Thank you to all the families and teachers who have joined the 2011/2012 PTO! Our annual Membership Drive concluded at the end of October. We had a very successful drive with over 350 families and faculty members jo in ing.  We exceeded our financial goal of $5,000, by ra ising $5,300!  We fell short of our goal of 80% of families joining, but are very proud of our achievement of 75%! We hope that you have stopped by to admire the Family Paw Prints in the main hallway. Thank you for your support of the PTO.

Thank You Cub Scouts!A big thank you to Cub Scout Pack 10 for their Fall Raking and Clean Up! About 20 kids/families helped out to rake the school grounds and also clean up some storm damage on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in early

November. A special thanks to Logan and Morgan Connors and their

dad Matt who supplied the chain saw and truck that hauled most of the

branches and leaves.  Thank you to Cubmaster Ed Fallacaro and his son

Nicholas that brought some heavy equipment to blow the leaves.   We are so appreciative of the partnership with have with our local scouts who come out year after year to help out with the school grounds!

With the Winter Break at the end of the this month, now is a great time to start thinking about the 2012 Science Fair. Each year hundreds of students present a wide range of topics. A science fair project is a great way to allow your child to design his or her own learning experience: one that allows him or her to innovate, just as scientists do in the real world. Many of the skills used during project planning, development, and presentation extend above and beyond science proficiency. Students can explore personal interests, as well as learn the scientific method to answer a question. The Science Fair Committee hopes to promote the use of the scientific method. We will provide diagrams and worksheets aimed at elementary students on our PTO website as well as having our parent scientists visit the classrooms to discuss how they use the scientific method in the work.

The Steps of the Scientific Method:

Ask a Question: The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe or notice: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where? In order for the scientific method to answer your question it must be about something that you can measure, preferably with a number.

Do Background Research: Rather than starting from scratch, you want to use library and Internet research to better understand your topic.

Construct a Hypothesis: A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work. Your hypothesis should be constructed in a way to help answer your original question.

Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment: Your experiment should test whether your hypothesis is true or false. It is best to repeat experiments several times to make sure that the first results weren't just an accident.

Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion: Once your experiment is complete, you collect your measurements and analyze them to see if your hypothesis is true or false. Scientists often find that their hypothesis was false, and in such cases they will construct a new hypothesis starting the entire process of the scientific method over again. Even if they find that their hypothesis was true, they may want to test it again in a new way.

Communicate Your Results: To complete your science fair project you will present your results at the science fair. Professional scientists do almost exactly the same thing by publishing their final report in a scientific journal or by presenting their results on a poster at a scientific meeting.

Students have a wide range of interests. While some interests may appear to lend themselves better to science fair projects than others, there are so many possibilities that your child is sure to find a project topic about which he or she is excited. This enthusiasm are what drive great projects, new insights, and innovative discoveries!

Useful Resources: There is a wealth of information available to help with science projects. Visit the Science Fair Resources section of the Edgewood PTO website (http://209.18.101.212/pennsbury/Edgewood/PTO/Site%20Map/Science%20Fair%20Resources/) or the library for useful information.

Science Buddies (sciencebuddies.org) offers an interactive questionnaire to help science fair participants narrow their area of interest. You can access this Topic Selection Wizard from the Project Ideas tab at the top of their web page. Have your children give it a try!

Contact Information: If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help with this year's Science Fair please contact Beth Brunette at [email protected] or 267-392-5137. The committee would also like to recognize sciencebuddies.org for helping provide resources for the above information.
