This is an outstanding personal achievement and one of which our school community are incredibly proud. Reporting To Parents Assessment of learning, at learning and for learning is an integral part of the teaching-learning cycle in all classes on a weekly basis. Teachers use this infor-mation to guide their programs and to accommodate individual student needs. Towards the end of each semester teachers evaluate student achievement in each Key Learning Area. This assessment is aligned to stage outcomes for the learning addressed up until the final reporting period and levelled A-E for Years 1-6 according to achievement. In this process, students achieving at stage out-comes are awarded a ‘sound’ achievement. All teachers are currently conducting their final assessments with students, mak-ing judgements in consultation with other teachers on their stage and using this information for the preparation of written reports. This is a highly complex and time consuming process and I commend all staff for their effort to ensure all stu-dents receive a comprehensive learning profile. Reports will be distributed to parents in the last week of this term. Jennifer Parke Principal Deputy Principal’s Report

Focus on Reading In the last newsletter information was present-ed regarding the implementation of Focus on Reading at Edgeworth Public School. Staff at Edgeworth continually refine their teaching to ensure best practice throughout all classes K-6. This week further information is presented about the Super Six comprehension strategies.

Making Connections Students make personal connections with a text. There are three ways that readers make connections with texts:

Something in their own life (text to self) Another text (text to text) Something occurring in the world (text to

world) Making Connections is important because it helps students see how things they read are related. Predicting Students use information from graphics, texts, and personal experiences to anticipate what will happen next.

Students use predicting to adjust their thoughts to help them develop a greater understanding of texts.

Late Arrival & Early Pick Up of Students

Parents/carers are advised that children who arrive late to school need to come to the office to get a “Late Arrival” note, regardless of whether they are accompanied by an adult.

If you are picking up your child early from school, parents/carers or a designated person MUST come to the office to get an “Early Leaver” note before collecting their child. Teachers will not allow your child to accompany you unless you provide them with the Early Leaver note.

Questioning Learners pose and answer questions that clarify meaning and promote deeper understanding of the text. Questions can be generated by the learner, a peer or the teacher. Questioning helps students clarify their understanding of texts. Monitoring Learners stop and think about the text and know what to do when meaning is disrupted. Students who monitor well:

Ask, does this make sense? Realise there may be words they don’t understand. Reread when they don’t have comprehension.

Visualising Learners create a mental image from a text. They are able to use the text to cre-ate a picture in their mind.

Visualising brings the text to life, engages the imagination and uses all of the senses.

Visualising is important because it puts an image in a readers mind. Summarising Learners identify and accumulate the most important ideas and restate them in their own words. Summarising is one of the most difficult strategies for students to master. Positive Behaviour for Learning This Friday is our first rewards day for Term 2. Students may choose to use their Ronowldo tokens or wait until the next rewards day which is scheduled for Week 10. Should students be claiming a reward then they will be receiving a note home to their parents acknowledging their achievement. The rewards menu for students who have been demonstrating respect, responsibility and learning is below.

Aboriginal Updates It has been an exciting couple of weeks for the Aborigi-nal students of Edgeworth Public School. I have been busily making my way around to each classroom intro-ducing myself and doing my best to learn the names of our students and staff.

At this stage the majority of the Aboriginal students have participated in an art and story time session in the Residence. We are currently developing our yearly work plan and we are extremely eager to hear from the families of our students to discuss what you would like to see for your child/children. We will soon be sending a formal letter of invitation for families and friends to meet with myself and staff over a light afternoon tea to discuss the best way for us to move forward. Ray Kelly Aboriginal Education Worker (AEW) Library News Announcing the BIG 20c BOOK SALE being held in the Library COLA before school every day till stocks run out. There are lots of stories, picture books and books about animals, science, jokes and much more.

Congratulations to these seven students who have completed their Premier’s Reading Challenge: Harper Selmes, Will Bailey, Harrison Bailey, Abbey Bramley, Sienna Tabas, Sapphire Tabas and Max Balckert. I’m looking forward to being inundated with lots more reading logs in the coming weeks.

School Drumming Program 2015 Vacancies

The drumming group is taken by Col Hatchman who is an established drum teacher with over 28 years experience and has tailored a program specifically for primary aged students. The program is aimed at developing concentration and focus, motor skills and self-esteem, stimulating the nervous and cardiovascular system, increasing confidence, improving coordination and providing a positive, therapeutic outlet for students to assist them in displaying more positive behav-iours. The program incorporates both drum technique and drum performance including basic strokes, rhythms and tricks. Our school would like to offer newly opened positions to this program for the rest of 2015. This would include a 1 hour lesson per week during each term. There are only 2-3 places available and drum class numbers will be based on a ‘first in’ preference. Each group will be supervised by a teacher and held Wednesday lunchtime each week. Parents must understand and be willing to commit to the full program and payment for lessons even when your child is ab-sent. If you are interested in your child participating in this program for the remainder of 2015 and are willing to commit to the full program, please contact the drum-ming coordinator Mr Jacob Szczudlo or the office to indicate your child’s interest. Henny Penny hatchery It has all been happening in the Kin-dergarten rooms. Last week some very special fluffy friends arrived in the rooms. Students have had the opportunity to watch chicks hatch from their eggs in the incubator and watch them get bigger in the pen.

This experiment has given the students an opportunity to discover firsthand the lifecycle of a chicken and they have learnt how to care for the chicks. All students have enjoyed having the chick’s and the chicks have loved all of the cuddles.

Even our Kindy teachers love spending time with the chicks. The chicks will stay at school until Friday and then some of the students will be able to adopt them. Oakvale Farm Excursion Last week Kindergarten students had an amazing day at Oak-vale Farm. They were able to have a tractor ride, pat the koala, feed the lambs, milk the cow and if they were brave like Mrs Pusz and Miss Goldberg, hold a snake. The students learnt so

many new and interesting facts about farm life and animals.

Stage 1 have been busy working hard on their assessments ready for their reports at the end of term. Stage 1 Teachers are very pleased with the progress that many students are making in reading. Congratulations to the singing choir who performed to ‘Frozen’ beautifully at the whole school assembly last Friday. The audience loved the item. Congratulations also to our Stage 1 circus speakers - Harrison, Kyah, Lauren, Kaylee, Lacey, Noah, Azar and Rosemary who entertained the audience with their public speaking abil-ity. Next Friday students can exchange their Ronowldo cards for rewards. Many stu-dents are very excited about having their face painted but a lot of students are saving their rewards for Week 10 so they can bring their scooter to school for the afternoon session.

Student Safety Around Staff Car-park & Roads The 3:10 pm pick-up time is a “heavy traffic” period of the day when we need to take extra care for the safety of students leaving the school grounds. The school carpark is an OUT OF BOUNDS area for students and parents between the hours of 8.00am and 3.30pm. The carpark is used for

STAFF PARKING ONLY. The new disabled parking area is for the safe drop-off and pick-up of students and parents with special needs only. Please keep in mind these very important safety procedures: Use the pathways and

gates when entering and leaving - don’t walk your children through the car-park or use the driveways as an entry or exit.

Use the pedestrian crossing - don’t walk your children across the street, and nev-er call them from across the street.

Park on the street - do not enter the carpark unless you or your child have spe-cial needs.

3/4B IN THE SPOTLIGHT What a busy first 4 months at school 3/4B have had. I have been incredibly impressed with their hard work and the positive attitude shown by all of them every day. They are talented artists, creative thinks and clever mathemati-cians. They also enjoy a good story and laugh which keeps us all entertained. This term we enjoyed our excursion to the Lake Macquarie Council and Art

Gallery. The walk from Speers Point to the gallery was a good 3km, but we got to enjoy the beautiful views of the lake and developed an appreciation of many of the things that our community has to offer. The children have also been enjoying gymnastics and are proud of the new skills they are acquiring.

I would also like to thank the parents and children of 3/4B for their nomina-tion in NEWFM’s Apple for Newcastle’s favourite teacher competition. It was flattering to be nominated and I know that many people spent countless hours voting, we were close but got nudged out at the finish line!

All students conducted themselves safely with their best manners at all times. Thank you to the parents who came along on our 'observation walk' and joined us for lunch. A great day had by all! NAPLAN Congratulations to our Year 3 students who successfully completed their first Na-tional Assessment Program. Like all assessments, some parts are easy but there are also challenges. It must be remembered that any assessment task is a 'snapshot-in-time'. IPads/Tablets Please note that unless specific arrangements have been made with a class teach-er, no students should bring these devices to school.

Debating On Thursday 21 June, the Edgeworth Owls debating team participated in their first de-bate in the Premier’s Debating Challenge against Cardiff South Public School. The Edge-worth Owls team consisted of Ella Harrison-Virag, Kooper Robson, Tayla Collins and Aja Rippon. The Edgeworth Owls were successful in win-ning the debate as the affirmative team argu-ing ‘That homework should be banned for primary school students’. Well done Edge-worth Owls! SPORT Athletics Carnival Change of Date Please be advised that the date of the Athletics Carnival has changed. Due to un-foreseen circumstances, the original date now clashes with the final Star Struck re-hearsal, which involves 64 Edgeworth PS students. So these students still have the chance to participate, we have made the decision to change the date. As such, the 2015 Edgeworth PS Athletics Carnival will now be held on Tuesday 21 July at Edge-worth Little Athletics Centre. We thank parents and students for their understand-ing. All Schools Swimming Success Congratulations to Edgeworth PS School Captain Emily Jones, who competed at the NSW All School Swimming Carnival last Monday. Emily competed in the 200m Indi-vidual Medley, 50m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly, and competed against the best 12 year old swimmers from all schools in NSW, including Catholic, Private and High School. She swam unbelievably well, placing 4th in all 3 events. This wonderful effort saw Emily gain selection in the NSW team for the 200m IM and 50m Butterfly for the Pan-Pacific Games to be held in Adelaide in November. Here she will com-pete against swimmers from all over Australia and a number of other countries. Congratulations Emily on such a remarkable achievement. State Knockout Netball On Wednesday 20 May the senior netball team played their second round of the NSW PSSA knockout competition. They met Wallsend South Public School and were successful in winning the game 19-10. This means that the girls move on to the third round. They will be up against either Elermore Vale Public School or Ta-ree West Public School. I would just like to congratulate the girls on their fabulous effort in this completion so far. They have played strong and shown wonderful sportsmanship. Well done to the amazing attacks (Shae Farrell, Tayla Gradwell and Emily Jones), magnificent mid court (Lillie Edwards, Abbey Morgan, Kayla Borrow and Jessica Armstrong) and dazzling defences (Georgia Chapple, Drew Martin and Di-Erin Weatherall). I am definitely one proud coach and the season has only just begun! Looking for-ward to a wonderful season with this great bunch of girls. State Knockout Rugby Union On 18 May, the Edgeworth PS Rugby Union team began its campaign in the State KO Rugby Union competition. Edgeworth drew a tough pool, and met a large and physical Singleton PS in the first round. Edgeworth played a strong and bruising game, coming out 21-5 winners. Edgeworth then had to back up less than 10 minutes later against a fresh East Maitland PS. As expected, Edgeworth struggled to get out of the blocks early, quickly falling behind 14-0. The boys and girls then mustered that well known Edgeworth PS spirit and began to rally back. Unfortu-nately some simple errors hurt the team and they went down 19-12. To the teams credit, they refused to use the short turn around as an excuse, and vowed to come back better and stronger. SRC - Fundraising/Charities Committee Cupcake Day 4M and 6G will be hosting Cup-cake Day next week on Wednes-day 3 June. Cupcakes will be sold for $0.50-$1.00. Please help sup-port this SRC fundraiser and buy a delightful cupcake.

Out of Uniform Day – a‘MAZE’ing The SRC are hosting an out of uniform day on Thursday 28 May to help raise money for Star Struck costumes. All students who come out of uni-form are asked to support the fundraiser by making a gold coin donation. The theme for 2015 Star Struck is a’MAZE’ing so the SRC are asking that all students come in a’MAZE’ing colours to support this fundraiser. We look forward to seeing a MAZE of colours at Edgeworth P.S.

SPORT CONT. Knights Knockout Rugby League Edgeworth PS took part in the Knights KO on Thursday 21 May. As seemed to be the case this year, we were drawn in a tough pool. They began the day against the traditionally strong Jewells PS. In an even game, a try in the last minute gave Jew-ells a 4-0 win. The team played better in their next game against Maryland PS, and dominated the game, however despite this domination, a few errors cost them some tries, and they only led 4-0 with time running out. In a cruel blow, Marlyand scored an equalising try after the fulltime siren, to leave the score at 4-4. Some positional changes before their next match paid dividends, and Edgeworth finally played to their potential, defeating Singleton PS 8-0. Their final match was against a huge Nulkaba PS, and whilst the score was an 8-0 win to Nulkaba, it was a far more even match than the score suggested. Edgeworth PS 0 defeated by Jewells PS 4 Edgeworth PS 4 (Try- Jack B) drew Maryland PS 4 Edgeworth PS 8 (Tries- Jerome and Logan) def Singleton 0 Edgeworth PS 0 defeated by Nulkaba PS 8 State Knockout Soccer The Senior Soccer team will begin its State Knockout campaign when they meet Cardiff South PS tomorrow. Good luck to the boys. Mr Gray and Miss McGrath GRIP Student Leadership Conference On Monday 18 May, the student leaders, Tyler Neilsen, Kooper Robson, Bailey Rae, Ethan Falvey, Aja Rippon, Lakeisha Bailey, Ellie Taylor and Ella Harrison-Virag, attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at Newcastle Panthers. The con-ference hosted many schools from throughout the region which gave the students a great opportunity to interact with other student leaders. The conference focused on making the most of leadership opportunities and standing up for what is right, standing up for others and standing up for yourself. The students also learnt about the idea of ‘Pay it Forward’ and being generous to others with their time, treasure and talent. The conference concluded with the student leaders discussing priority areas of the school and beginning to develop a leadership plan. All students represented the school with pride and should be very proud of their achievements. Pizza Day Canteen are looking for volunteers on Wednesday 24 June. If you can help on that day, please let Jen in the Canteen know. Due to an increase from the supplier, we have had to increase pizza’s by 50cents. This is the first increase in six years. Thank you for your under-standing and support. SRC - Fundraising/Charities Committee (Cont.) Ring Pull Collection We had our first ring pull col-lection on Friday 22 May. Wow! What an effort from Edgeworth Public School. Congratulations to everyone that has brought in some ring pulls over the past 5 weeks. Congratulations to 1OT for being the class who collected the most ring pulls from Weeks 1-5. Just a reminder that we are continuing to ask all school community members to col-lect ring pulls and send them into school to raise money for charity. The ring pulls will be cashed in to raise money for the Newcastle Ronald McDon-ald House. Please start send-ing in your ring pulls as soon as possible. Each classroom has a bag/container to collect their ring pulls in. On Friday 26 June (Week 10, Term 2), we will be conducting our next ring pull collection from each class.
