EDITION 19, 21st July 2017 Article 31: You have the right to play and rest. The 2016-2017 academic year has undoubtedly been one of significant and rapid change. From working hard to ensure clarity and developing consistency, heightened standards of quality first teaching, learning and assessment to refining the procedures in place to ensure the wellbeing and safety of our children; grappling to resolve the numerous snags associated with our new school building, to redesigning the curriculum children experience and reinforcing the vision for all our children to be exposed to the kind of primary experience which interests and inspires learners, opens up a world of possibilities, develops individuals’ talents and abilities whilst instilling a continued thirst and respect for education. I am sure that you will agree, the end of year standards of achievement recently shared are testament to the sheer amount of school improvement work that has taken place since September. We are not stopping there, as there are already a number of projects in the pipeline for the new academic year to further enhance our children’s learning experience and environment. As we break up for our much deserved summer holiday I would like to thank all of the children, parents and staff for making my first year here at Marlborough so memorable. Daphne Byron Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday. Please remember that children return to school on Wednesday 6 September.

We are not stopping there, as there are already a number of projects in the pipeline for the new academic year to further enhance our children’s learning experience and environment. CHILDNET FILM COMPETITION On Monday 3 July our Digital Leaders were invited to the awards ceremony for the Childnet Film Competition, at the British Film Institute on London's South Bank. They got to meet the winning filmmakers, and talked to lots of adults and children about the Digital Leaders scheme.

The Digital Leaders are trained experts in online safety. If you would like to join them next year, watch out for announcements at the start of term. For more information about the Film Competition or the Primary Digital Leaders scheme, go to childnet.com

‘Recently, the school’s Digital Leaders went to a Childnet ceremony! We took the Bakerloo line train then we got off at Waterloo station. Sadly, Marlborough didn’t get in the finals but we did a great job of representing the school. We had a delicious buffet and we got a goody bag with amazing toys, colours and a book. We took pictures with people and we met pupils from other schools. We also did a challenge card with different and funny challenges!’

Miriam, Emerald Class

‘On Monday our Digital Leaders went to the Childnet Film awards to celebrate the winners of the film competition. Unfortunately, Marlborough wasn’t 1st, 2nd or 3rd but at least we tried. We went because Childnet chose us to be at a stall to talk about our digital leading. There was also a buffet and we got goodie bags! Not to mention we went 21 stops on the Bakerloo line from Harrow and Wealdstone to Waterloo, and back makes 42 stops!’

Abby, Emerald Class

‘On Monday 3 July 2017 the digital leaders went to the BFI to watch other schools get awards. Sadly we did not get a prize. We also talked about being a digital leader to other people. They had a buffet table with snacks and other treats. The journey to Southbank BFI was 21 stops direct.’

PARENTPAY

From September we are switching to an e-payment system of paying for dinner money, trips, music lessons etc. This will be done using ParentPay either online via the secure website or in cash at local stores with the PayPoint logo. Letters have been sent home today giving full details together with your username and password. Please activate your account as soon as possible as all payments will need to be done through this system from September. This will include school lunches and children will not be able to take lunches unless there is credit on their account. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

YEAR 6 PRODUCTION

Our Year 6s have been very busy over the last few weeks preparing for their traditional end of year performance. This year the show was ‘Olivia’. The whole school was lucky enough to be able to watch the show at the dress rehearsal stage. On Thursday night parents attended the main performance.

Some of the children took on performance roles whilst some worked behind the scenes on lighting and scenery. Their weeks of preparation and teamwork definitely paid off as both the parents and children really enjoyed the performance. We would like to thank not only all of our fabulous Year 6 children for their hard work, but also to say a big thank you to all of the staff who worked so hard to bring the performance together.

‘On Wednesday 12 July Year 6 did a production of a musical called Olivia! It was a very memorable production. At 1.30pm the whole school gathered in the hall fizzing with excitement. The Year 6s started off the show with a wonderful song and exciting introduction. There was a lot of clapping. They closed the show emotionally with Olivia finding her mother after flashbacks of the past. Then a lovely song to close the whole thing. I think Year 6 did a wonderful production of a musical.’

Sarah, Emerald Class

YEAR 6 LEAVERS

Our Year 6 children are leaving us today and will shortly be starting at high school. The whole school attended an emotional farewell assembly to wish them all every success in the next exciting phase of their lives. We hope that we have equipped them for the challenges they will face and that they will take away lots of good Marlborough memories with them.

SPORTS REPORT

WATFORD C&T TOURNAMENT 2017

On Tuesday 11 July some of our children were selected to represent the school at Watford C&T Football Tournament. The girls and boys teams both did exceptionally well both coming in second place. Team members took home a well-deserved medal.

‘On Tuesday when I went to football I enjoyed working with my team and scoring goals. It was really fun because we got to play lots of different schools, but Cedars had a really good player and sadly we lost. We still had a fun game and we got to play against lots of different teams. When we finished our first game only I scored so Miss Sewell gave our team some really good advice and so did Mr Castro. It was really fun and we had to wait for the boys to finish their game in the rain. When we got told the scores we all got a medal and Marlborough came second.’

Jasmine, Seahorse Class

‘It was extremely fun because we all got to compete against other schools. It was sponsored by Rising Stars Football Community. We came to school at 8.40am. There were seven boys and seven girls. The first match we played against Grange. We won 5 – 1. At the same time the girls were playing against Cedars. Sadly they lost 5-1. The boys’ next match was against St Theresa’s . We tied 1-1. It was hard. The girls then played against Oxhey Lane. They won 1-0. The boys played against Cedars and sadly lost 1-0. The girls had played their final match and won 2-1. The girls managed to come second. They got a medal for coming second. The boys played their final match. We won 3-1. We came 2nd! It was amazing.’

Rehan, Emerald Class

‘On Tuesday 11 July we went to play a football tournament at Watford and we came second. St Theresa’s won because they won 3 games and drew 1-1 against us. At the end it was raining and our school team of girls were cheering for us. We lost 2-0 against Cedars Manor while they scored from the half way line and I gave away a penalty which gave them luck. Our girls came second as well. We all got a medal. The girls won 2 and lost 1.’

SPORTS DAY & SCHOOL GAMES DAY On Friday 7 July, Marlborough held a Sports Day, with Years 1 and 2 holding events in the playground and Years 3-6 holding events at Cunningham Park. Children took part in different activities such as egg and spoon, javelin & cross country. Children, parents and teachers enjoyed Sports day and were lucky to enjoy such fantastic weather. Thanks to the Sport Leaders for their help running the events and to all the parents who came along to support the children. On Tuesday 20 July, Marlborough held a School Games Day. KS2 children played different sports against other classes of the same year group. Football, korfball, basketball, hockey and sprints were just some of the sports that the children played. School Games Day was the culmination of a year of competitions in the school and the borough. A massive thank you to all the sports leaders and teachers helping out on the day.

CHANGE FOR LIFE

‘On Monday 3 July 2017 Change 4 Life the club led by Mr Castro got transported on a bus (the 186) all the way

to The Hive, also known as Barnet FC. We were doing different activities about football. Supporters for Change 4 Life are Crystal Palace and Nike and MacDonalds. We had so much fun we would like to go again. ‘

Kowcer, Emerald Class

‘Yesterday I went to The Hive as a treat from Mr Castro. We took the bus 186. We did football, running, skills and obstacles. Crystal Palace was there. Four other schools were there as well.’

Andreas, Emerald Class

Last week a group of children attended the Harrow Youth Sports Festival as part of the Change 4 Life programme. The event was held at The Hive Football Centre, part of Barnet Football Club. Children took part in a range of fun activities.

YEAR 5 ART GALLERY

As part of the Year 5 Curriculum children have learned about Globalisation and worked through what it means to

be a global citizen. Therefore, it only makes sense to give them the opportunity to experience compassion in

order to develop a strong charitable spirit.

Year 5 did a fantastic job supporting the fundraising campaign which aimed to support the disadvantaged

children from Iraq and Afghanistan through Unicef.

Some of Year 5 children went to Sancroft Hall Home Care to experience spending time with elderly residents.

“The money raising Art Gallery was an exquisite idea planned by Miss Tagui. All the year fives painted different kinds of artistic styles. I feel this is a great way to express our feelings towards Unicef and the refugee crisis.”

Joycelyn, Jupiter Class

“We spent some time with lovely people and told them things about us. Then we went to their beautiful garden and I played basketball with them. It was amazing to meet really nice people. I think we made them very happy as they asked us to go there again.”

Madina, Saturn Class

We are proud to let you know that so far we have

raised £121 and to announce that donations can still

be given during the 1st week in September. A big

congratulation to Jupiter Class for selling all their

amazing paintings and we want to invite all children

from other Y5 classes to support the disadvantaged

children from Iraq and Afghanistan.

ARTS WEEK From 3 – 7 July the whole school took part in Art Week. Each class took part in a range of art and craft projects.

AWESOME ART ‘On Monday 3 July all the way through the week, we had Art Week. Year 4 made a collage. We were split into groups of what we were drawing. Emerald did the grass, flowers and mini-beasts. Sapphire did the children playing and Diamond did trees and birds. I did the fox. It will be 3D scanned and have a light behind it like a stained glass window! Also, we did pop-up books. All of us did Humpty Dumpty then all did Five Little Ducks or Frogs. We also did three of our own. After we finished them all we made front covers. For science, we drew around each other and drew the digestive system on a large sheet of paper. Lastly, we were split into groups of three to make some maths boards games for the other classes to play.’

YEAR 2 TRIP TO WHIPSNADE ZOO

‘On Monday, we went to Whipsnade zoo to finish our work on animals and habitats. We walked around the whole zoo and got really tired legs. We saw zebras, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, meerkats, red pandas, elephants and lots of other animals. My favourite animal was the meerkats because they were so cute. We got to play on a playground after we finished seeing all the animals. We had lots of fun.’

Faith, Owl Class

‘On Monday my group of friends went on the coach to have some fun at Whipsnade zoo. When we arrived at our destination I saw elephants. They were big with their enormous trunks. Next I saw a rhino with a big horn on his pointy nose. We saw lots of different animals and felt very tired at the end. My legs were exhausted but we had lots of fun!’

Priyan, Owl Class

Year 2 children were lucky enough to spend the day at Whipsnade Zoo recently. The children got to see many of the animals they had been learning about and they still had the energy to enjoy the playground afterwards!
