Those of you who regularly read the paper know that we are always happy to support our local parents

that are fundraising for their children.With so many amazing opportunities available to them, it is always great to support enthusiastic, determined young people getting out into the world and making their mark.However, when a parent is forced to fundraise to get their child medical assistance, equipment and treatment, it somehow seems so unjust – when we live in a first world country, for medical care not to be available to them.But this is the case for young Beerwah local Emily Madden who has been suffering from a range of conditions over the

past decade that had gone undiagnosed.When medical tests identified that one of the health issues Emily suffers from is the ‘controversial’ Lyme disease, her doctors advised Emily that her best chance of overcoming this was to seek treatment in Germany.So for over a year now Emily and her support crew have been fundraising to make this a reality. This week she will fly overseas to receive the first stage of her treatment.I am sure that many readers will have her in their thoughts; we look forward to her safe return and will continue to support her on her journey to recovery.

Last week when Doctor Harry from Better Homes and Gardens visited the Sunshine Coast he was clearly enjoying the opportunity to spend time here.Doctor Harry said he finds the Sunshine Coast very laid back and relaxed and was pleased to be able to arrive early and spend some time enjoying what the Sunshine Coast has to offer.On the day I caught up with him, he was having a lunch break while filming a segment about Parrots in Paradise in Glass House Mountains for Better Homes and Gardens.When I asked what he thought about the incredible facility – and the lady that ran it – he simply said he would have to describe her as a ‘bird nut’ but a nice one - which Dail (the owner) seemed to take as a compliment.Dr Harry said, it was amazing what can grow from a small start, and that Dail’s commitment to her private bird park is definitely incredible and it would probably be the only one of its kind in Australia open to the public.The last time he visited Glass House Mountains it was to visit a local with a pet pig called Utopia that needed some behavior modification and her lovely owner Bianca.Doctor Harry explained that when he goes out to visit people with problem pets – he can really only guide them and give them a plan to put into place – and success is really up to the pet owner

to put in the hard yards retraining their animal.“Generally a few months later when the owners have had success, they like to send me videos of their animal’s new and improved behavior,” he said.Sunshine Coast Destinations Marketing and Brand Director, Veronica Rainbird said having Doctor Harry here had been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Sunshine Coast on a high rating national program. It not only put the spotlight on the region, but encouraged visitors to enjoy these attractions.Watched by 1.1 million viewers, the Better Homes and Gardens program is aired on Channel 7, Friday from 7.30pm. Lymphoedema sufferer Cr Jenny McKay will help to raise awareness with an iced tea party

Cr Jenny McKay giving back in Lymphoedema Awareness MonthCouncillor Jenny McKay is set to host an Iced Tea Party as part of Lymphoedema Awareness Month this March.After contracting Lymphoedema four years ago following breast cancer surgery, Cr McKay has recently begun a potentially life-changing medical trial with doctors at Macquarie University.While she considers the party a small gesture, she is excited to do something for the organisation that has already done so much for her.“I am fortunate to have received so much support from my community and family throughout my journey, but there are many sufferers who do not receive the same recognition.“Lymphoedema is a poorly researched and recognised condition so I am thankful to have the opportunity to raise public awareness,” said Cr McKay.Cr McKay is hoping to be joined by Queensland State Representative for the Australasian Lymphology Association Robyn Scheer, to speak with her about the journey of a Lymphoedema sufferer.“I have always been a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness and I am now honoured to help bring Lymphoedema into the public arena,” said Cr McKay.Lymphoedema affects people of all ages and occurs when the lymphatic circulation fails to function correctly, causing persistent swelling of the limb(s) and other areas of the body.

It seems that the untidy state of the Simpson Street / Roberts Road intersection has been a bugbear for many Beerwah residents and businesses for a fair while, if the number of letters to the Editor we’ve had over the last few weeks is anything to go by.In GCNews edition March 6, we reported on the concerns people raised with us over the appalling condition of the landscaping and how it was reflecting on the image of the town.At the time, we unfortunately missed being able to include the views of the Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, due to our printing deadline constraints.It seems that a frustrated Cr Baberowski has been endeavouring to address the issue for some time.Cr Baberowski said that the overgrown and untidy state of the roundabout has been a frustration for the community including himself, for a long time.“Let’s be clear, the owner and responsible land manager is the State Government. I’ve raised the problem with them on several occasions, in writing, in meetings and in phone calls,” he said.“The Department of Transport and Main Roads informed council last year that there would

be a significant reduction in funding to their maintenance programs across the board and our roundabout in Beerwah seems to have got caught up in the state’s funding cuts.“Despite this, I am currently pursuing alternative strategies to resolve this issue permanently and will announce how that will happen soon,” he said.A local business owner, concerned at the overall state of the township, wrote to us expressing their views.‘I have just read your article ‘Untidy Town’ and I completely agree. I have been thinking the same thing myself for many years now. I have been turning right into Foley Road / Beerwah Parade from Steve Irwin Way every morning thinking what a disgrace the streets are with overgrown grass on the traffic island and gutters and rubbish littering the sides of the road. Thanks for writing this article, hopefully it will prompt something.’When asked, Cr Baberowski was more than happy to provide us with examples of how council has been keeping up their end of the bargain.“Council can list a number of good outcomes for Glasshouse Country when it comes to the upkeep of our towns, roads and public spaces,” he said. “In Beerwah, council’s maintenance schedule now includes mowing 22 weeks per year, up from 17 previously, and garden beds will be maintained on a weekly basis with 52 services per year, up from 26 services previously.“Through my advocacy, Skippy Park has also recently had a maintenance schedule upgrade, which aside from the current Stage 2 construction works, means there will be more council crews to maintain the park. “There’s also been a concerted effort to manage the litter-bug issue and council has picked up a lot of roadside garbage along the Woodford-

Beerburrum Road, on Caloundra Road and between Beerwah and Landsborough,” he saidRecent wet weather has impacted upon all outdoor activities – and council’s parks and reserves maintenance program has not been immune.“Routine maintenance had been disrupted during this period, however in the coming weeks the majority of weeds and long grass will be serviced and our towns will be looking as tidy as they should and need to be.“If you have concerns about maintenance issues on council controlled land, I would encourage you to use Council’s Customer Contact service to let us know. If in doubt about whose responsibility it is, you can always contact my office to find out if it’s something that we can help you with,” said Cr Baberowski.The office of Mark McArdle was contacted to comment, as the main areas of concern are State Government managed lands, however no response was received by GCNews before we went to print.


Giving blood is the perfect giftGlass House Mountains local Peter Farrell who is 64, started giving blood at the age of 18. When the Red Cross Blood Donormobile turns into the car park at the Glass House Visitor Information centre car park in April, Peter will be lining up for his 150th blood donation.Peter started giving blood way back in 1967, when he was 18-years-old and working in David Jones in Sydney. Since then he’s averaged three or four donations a year.While he was happy give blood – he was pretty cluey at 18 in knowing that David Jones would give their employees a half day off for donating blood. So he organised his to be done on Friday lunch time so he could head off early down the south coast to his parents holiday house!These days giving blood is part of Peter’s life and his wife Kay volunteers with the Blood Bank when it operates in Landsborough.Blood is vital to life and for many people blood donors are their lifeline. Currently only one in 30 people give blood, but one in three will need blood in their lifetime. Vale Reginald BeanlandLong time Glass House Mountains local Reginald (Reg) Beanland was born January 12, 1934 at the Woodford Hospital to Archibald and Rita Beanland. He was their second child and only son.Around 1936 - 37, the family moved to a property at Peachester and then in 1938 to one at Bald Knob.

Work on his parents dairy farm started early and the days were long. But Reg learnt that if you hated a job the best way to approach it was to just get stuck into it and get it over with.Reg took up boxing and trained hard. He got his first professional bout in Brisbane’s Festival Hall in 1951, which he won on points.In 1952, like other young men, he did is national service. He was very proud of his service and during this time won his weight division in an army boxing tournament.Reg and his first wife Aileen moved to Glass House Mountains in 1956 to live, where Reg worked in the forestry and in 1965 he purchased a property on Sargents Road, where he started growing pineapples.He was on many local committees such as Director for the Fruitgrowers Co-operative, the Fire Warden for the rural fire brigade and the Hall Committee.In 1988 he started share farming with his son-in-law Warren Moffat and in 1996-97 Reg finally retired.In 2001 Reg lost his right leg (below the knee) but this did not stop him from getting back on his feet very quickly and getting on with life. In 1993 he met Val Warner who became his wife in 1995. With Val, Reg became involved with GADES.He loved this time because he met many new friends, and he and Val did many trips around the country.The last few years had not been kind to Reg. His health took a turn for the worse, and on February 24 this year, he passed away.He is remembered as a cheeky but determined man. He was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grand father.

School nurse reviewLast week we were contacted by a concerned parent who had heard that the position of School Nurse that Beerwah High shares with Maleny High would be axed. We have followed up this question with the State member and the school and at this stage it would appear that there was nothing to indicate that this was going to happen.

However, staff in Andrew Powel’s office advised on Thursday that there was a review of the 19 school nurses that are employed in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie region that would look at the capacity of these roles. On Friday we were then advised that the review was completed and that there were no changes to be made to the current system.

I definitely agree - Beerwah is an ‘untidy town’Re: Beerwah's ‘Untidy Town’ award winner status as speculated by Greg Brown (GCNews, March 6) - when I read Greg's article, I found myself nodding in agreement and saying ‘exactly’, and ‘that's right’. There are a number of untidy areas in the Beerwah town area and one of the worst is undoubtedly the well-known Roberts Road / Simpson Street roundabout which is currently very over-grown and sad looking. It is an eye-sore!All levels of government need to be able to operate sufficiently at a ‘grass roots’ level and assign priorities to such concepts as beautification of towns, or having initiatives such as ‘The Tidy Town Award’ and ‘The Tidy Street Award’ as many other towns / cities do.When you travel to other towns, other states, and other countries (and small rural towns and villages in France and Switzerland instantly come to mind), often one of the most appealing features about these places is their civic town square and / or gardens. In lots of these places, it is obvious that considerable time is spent planning, designing, planting and maintaining public gardens and decorative road edges. This clearly reflects a strong sense of pride and ownership that villagers there have in their town.Beerwah is the Home of Australia Zoo - which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. If Beerwah was a more attractive place from the outside, this would certainly create a better first impression and encourage our many visitors and tourists to visit and stay longer. I believe that the benefits to our local economy and local businesses would be immense as they would enjoy a positive spin-off from this extra attention.

Good landfill?Brickbats to the clown who between 10.00pm and 10.30pm deliberately upended garbage bins put out for collection on Tuesday, March 12 along Bray Road near the Mooloolah Village Hall.Bouquets to those kind folk who placed the rubbish back in the bins.This brain dead individual would have served the community better if he had hopped in a bin himself as he would make good landfill. Pity help us if this is the next generation.

Re: Jon Hennessey’s Letter ‘Tree Slaughter’I normally don’t bother replying to these letters but this one has really annoyed me. Driving into Glass House a couple of weeks ago I was pleasantly surprised to see they had changed the landscaping, the bigger tree’s had been cut down leaving the low trees and shrubs. I thought, wow that really looks much better and those businesses can finally be seen. I knew though there would be some complaints. I don’t think at all it was a ‘tree slaughter or massacre’ and quite honestly I think it is offensive and not needed.In this world there have been plenty of horrible actual massacres with people being killed and I don’t think a few trees being cut down can even compare to that type of devastation. Next time maybe use your words more wisely. True, birds and wildlife might have frolicked and even lived in the trees, but really… it wouldn’t have been that hard to find a new home.Don’t get me wrong I care about the wildlife but there is a lot of trees left in Glass House. The fact of the matter is, it is already done and there is absolutely no use kicking up a stink about some insects losing their homes. It has saved I’m sure some people’s cars getting damaged, and maybe even someone’s life.I’m also sure they didn’t cut them down to purposely ‘concrete any sign of nature’ that’s a bit dramatic, don’t you think? People should be focusing on positives rather than negatives in life. So why not plant a tree in your backyard? The insects might be able to relocate there?

Captain Cook wrote the following entry."....however, if any future navigator should be disposed to determine the question, whether it is or is not a river in this place, which the wind would not permit us to do, the situation may always be found by three hills which lie to the northward of it, in the latitude 26 degrees 53 minutes. These hills lie but a little way inland, and not far from each other: they are remarkable for the singular form of their elevation, which very much resemble a glass-house, and for which reason I called them Glass-Houses."

Walking / cycling tracksI note with interest Cr Baberowski`s mention of the importance of these tracks. Pedestrians of Peachester have been requesting for years basic maintenance on our Council walkways. Broken, sprained limbs, snakes and other dangers face school children and the elderly, and have been ongoing problems.Whilst it is appreciated Council using ratepayers funds to install these assets, basic maintenance should be applied to present said assets in a safe condition.Years of requests to Council, including the Councillor has increased our belief that those west of the rail line are not all that important.Recent photos are available, but as no notice has been taken of previous pics it would seem a waste of time.

Progress Association neededThe Beerwah Progress Association ran for 22 years, and ceased due to lack of support eight years ago. Some great achievements were obtained - $70,000 towards the swimming pool, boom gates on the railway crossing, and best of all – the start of Beerwah Recycling which produced money for the community.Judging by the letters in ‘You said it’ lately, it would seem that to restart a progress association would be beneficial to all of us.I suggest it would be called ‘The Glasshouse Country Progress Association’ and would cover Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Peachester and Beerwah.I have provisionally booked a room in the Beerwah Library for Monday, March 25 at 7.00pm. If we get sufficient support, the fourth Monday each month is available for a regular meeting time. Hoping to see you there.

Local churches ‘World Day of Prayer’

Contributed by Pastor David EdgarAlthough the weather was very soggy, 75 people from various Christian churches in the Glasshouse Country area attended the International World Day of Prayer (WDP) service held this year at the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church on the first Friday in March.You Tube shares a copy of the delightful vocal and instrumental duet involving Elizabeth Little and her granddaughter Andie, who also played the flute, accompanied by Bobbie Evans on the grand piano. (The clip can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kkOC2u3KkY)The 2013 theme highlighted gender inequality among female immigrants to France. The readings centred around a ‘focus on migration’ and were prepared by the French WDP Committee with the theme ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me.’The readings by representatives of local churches and the main speaker (Pastor L. Evans) reminded attendees that the admonition of Christ is to ‘Love our neighbours’. Then a delightful morning tea followed prepared by the Landsborough Adventist ladies.

The first Friday of March each year is the designated day for the World Day of Prayer celebrated among many Christian churches.The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of all traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year and who in many countries have a continuing relationship of prayer and service.(For more information please contact: [email protected] – or go to http://www.worlddayofprayer.org - and follow the links.

Social club helps rural firiesThe Beerwah Hotel Social Club like to have a bit of fun – but they also want to be able to make a positive contribution to our local community – and last week they did just that when they handed over funds raised from their regular raffles.Last week three of the members presented the Beerwah Rural Fire Services, First Officer, Lou Spann with a cheque for $1,000.00.

After hearing about the break-ins at their Roys Road facility last year – they hoped that the donation would assist with the purchase of replacement equipment.They plan to continue fundraising for our local community as part of their Saturday afternoon meat tray raffles. From 1.00pm – 2.00pm they sell tickets in five meat trays.The club has 16 members who are on a roster to sell tickets and they would be happy if others in the community would like to join them.Along with their Saturday afternoons at the Beerwah Hotel, they also organise regular social outings, the most recent being ‘Barefoot bowling’ at Club Glass House.If anyone would like to join the club there is a joining fee of $25.00 and if you drop into the club on a Saturday afternoon the hotel staff will point out who you need to talk to about the club.Gordon Laing, John Eccles with Lou Spann

New Church Outreach at MooloolahChurch on the Rise started in the hinterland area 25 years ago and now has campuses in Beerwah and Maleny. They are part of the Australian Christian Churches of Australia, formerly Assemblies of God. The church would like to start a meeting in Mooloolah to provide a contemporary church for the people in the area. On March 24 there is a family service at the Mooloolah Public Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. There will be great music, a relevant message, and lots of fun, food and fellowship. Starting at 2.30pm there will be face painting for the kids, a 3.00pm celebration service followed by a free afternoon tea.

The outreach is also designed to invite people who could be interested in having regular weekly church services in Mooloolah. There are people in the area who would like to see something started in Mooloolah and a connect group already meet in the Community Centre 7.00pm each Wednesday fortnight. A prickly lunchGlasshouse Country View clubOur guest speaker at our February 20 luncheon was Kerry Brown who has written a book titled ‘Our Sweetest Icon’ which tells the history of the Big Pineapple near Nambour. The talk was very interesting and many people present at the meeting could relate to some of the changes associated with the Big Pineapple over the years. Kerry was a passionate speaker and held the ladies spellbound.Kerry was a freelance journalist on the Sunshine Coast and covered a story about the last working farm in Woombye. After finishing this project she drove past the Big Pineapple and wondered why it had fallen into rack and ruin and she often talked about the mystery of the faded icon. Months later her daughter Georgia became ill so she took time off work to care for her. Kerry loved telling stories so friends and colleagues suggested she write a book about the Big Pineapple. ‘Our Sweetest Icon’ was meant to be a 50 page booklet but 18 months later grew into a bigger project. Lots of information was either destroyed or lost which made her search more difficult.Anyone interested in joining our View Club can phone Margaret on 5435 2172 who will be pleased to supply further information about the club. For those who don’t know about the View Club, we are a ladies club and we have a luncheon once a month and a monthly outing. Caloundra Family History Research IncContributed by Roz KussAt the February meeting, 25 members from the Caloundra Family History Research group spent the morning at Pattemore House in Maleny.The guided tour by the Friends of Pattemore House was most informative and our group was welcomed with a lovely morning tea, on that very wet day. The Caloundra members hope to return once restoration has been completed.Guest speaker at the group’s February general meeting was Ms Desley Schafer. Desley’s interesting Powerpoint presentation on ‘Pioneers and the Hardships’ brought a lot of memories back to the older members at the meeting.The next meeting, on March 21, we will have two guest speakers. Mr William Kitson, a Hinterland resident and founder of the Queensland Museum of Lands, Mapping & Surveying will speak on ‘Borders’. Ms Kaye Nardella, the current curator of the museum, will speak on ‘Cadastral Maps’. Primary Leaders’ Induction ServiceThe first day of March was auspicious in more ways than just welcoming autumn and saying goodbye to summer. This was the day Glasshouse Country Christian College inducted its 2013 primary leaders into their new roles.Head of Primary, Mrs Cheryl Bryers illustrated her talk about great leadership by having students come down the front and rearrange letters to spell the topic of the day. A highlight of the morning was the ceremonial pinning of leadership badges on the children by their parents or grandparents.The student leadership positions come with great responsibility. Duties include greeting special guests, being tour guides, leading assemblies and suggesting school improvements as well as more informal responsibilities such as helping younger students in the playground and being good role models.After the formal part of the service, leaders and parents stayed on for morning tea where Primary Captains, Sarah Mens and Casey Woods cut through an enormous sponge cake donated by Beerwah Woolworths.

An elegant wall calendar from 1966 is one of nearly 40 old calendars in the Bankfoot collection. Many of these calendars were still attached to

the walls of the house with the later ones pinned over earlier years. Calendars with their high quality photos were valued items and helped to decorate otherwise blank walls.The 1966 calendar was put out by ‘Sonar hearing aids’ and consisted of 12 pages, one for each month, and each page shows a photograph of a flower arrangement above the dates for that month. Examples of titles of arrangements are ‘Pleasure’, ‘Brilliance’ and ‘Drama’. On the reverse side of each photograph and month there is a description of the arrangement. Despite being 47-years-old, the calendar is in reasonable condition with only minor staining on some surfaces.The year 1966 was a significant year in Bankfoot House history as it was the year Jack and Mary Ferris took up residence in the house.

They’d been living in Newstead in Brisbane and, with retirement around the corner, Jack had purchased the house and two acres of surrounding land from William Isaac Burgess in December 1964.With Jack’s early work history as a ‘Bullocky’ there are a number of calendars with photos featuring bullock teams and the timber industry. In many cases the paper used in the calendars is fine quality and the photographs are worthy of becoming stand-alone pictures.The Friends of Bankfoot House plan to exhibit the calendars in the collection during 2014, after a new conservation and interpretation facility has been completed on the Bankfoot property.

Heritage countsLast month I had the opportunity to go to Mundubbera for a few days to help with the disaster recovery. I went there through a local church contact and had a great experience. On arrival I drove around to get a feel for the impact of the flood waters.The river had appeared to have widened its banks, so many trees flattened; fences and buildings plastered with debris. The low-lying parts of the town bore the signs of having been flooded with mud marks and ruined furniture and household things on the side of the road.But, what impressed me was the spirit of the people. In shops and the bakery people talked of what needed to be done to recover. There were many people distressed, particularly when they had lost nearly everything but there were those providing support and encouragement.For the first couple of days I was put to work in orchards bordering the Burnett River. Here, one was able to see the extent of damage and the effect on the local economy. A dead pig hanging in a tree, one of the many swept away by the floods; the carcases of cattle lying where the flood had dumped them; fruit trees torn out by the roots and others with smashed branches and

covered with debris.Another day I was helping to replace fencing torn away by the floodwaters. The old fencing was too tangled by debris to be unusable.People were coming in from all over to help. They turned up in their campervans and with their tents, prepared to sleep anywhere and put up with the lack of comfort that they would be used to at home. What is it that drives people to help their neighbours? Is it an inbuilt trait of humanity?No, there are cultures that would not do that. It is more to do with our culture which comes out of our Christian heritage and the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. When disaster strikes in this country we need to give thanks to God for that heritage which will bring others to our aid.

Beerwah Writers GroupContributed by Shirley MooreAt the well attended meeting of the Beerwah Writers Group, facilitator Paul Stevens welcomed two representatives from Glasshouse Primary School: teacher Joanne Sharpe and teacher / librarian Wayne Black.They discussed with members the possibility of a select group of children aged from six to 12 having access to Beerwah Writers Group to inspire the children to write and encourage them to form a Writers Club at the School.Members showed enthusiasm for the project and discussed the possibility of two members visiting the school.Wil treated us to an informative talk on the importance of correct story presentation suitable for publishing, which is often overlooked by writers. Wil has much experience in this field and also in IT.A few copies of our successful children's book ‘The Witches of the Hinterland’ remain and are available from the Beerwah News Agency.BWG meets every second and fourth Friday at the Beerwah Library.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week

TrailblazerXanthostemon chrysanthus formExploding into colour all over the Sunshine Coast at the moment is the magnificent Golden Penda. This North Qld native has been popular for years but its new cultivar, Trailblazer is becoming very popular. With wonderful variegated stunning green and gold foliage, Trailblazer really lifts a dull spot in the garden. It produces masses of large golden yellow flowers throughout the year but especially in late summer. It is very hardy in full sun or semi shade and makes a handsome large shrub. Check our specimen in the nursery grounds that is in full flower at the moment.

Bromeliad pupsBromeliads are mainly propagated through its pups.After flowering, young plants develop from the mother plant and these young ones are called pups. These pups are used for propagating these popular house and landscaping plants.

How to plant bromeliad pupsPups can be removed and planted individually, so that you get more bromeliads. Some people apply fertilisers to the mother plant, soon after flowering, so as to promote development of the pups. The number of pups may vary from one plant to another and in some cases, they can be numerous. Bromeliad pup removal is best done when they reach one-third the size of the mother plant. It is said that these pups grow healthy and at a faster rate, when they are attached to the mother plant. Once they reach the said size, these pups can be removed and potted. If the mother plant has almost died, it is better to remove the whole thing from the pot and then, gently pull the pups, which are easily separated from the mother plant.If you find it difficult to remove the bromeliad pups, then cut them off with a sharp knife. These pups can be planted, even if they have not developed roots. Once potted, roots develop naturally. It is better to keep the pups exposed to open air, so that the cuts can get dry. Use a well-drained potting mix for planting these pups in small pots. You may either go for the orchid mix or a mixture of peat moss and Perlite in a 60:40 ratio. Place these pots on locations with bright, but indirect sun. If the pups do not have roots, support them with small stakes.

Bromeliad pup care instructionsOnce the young pups start growing, you have to make sure that the right conditions are provided for their healthy growth. Keep the soil moist and not wet, throughout the growing stage of the plant. Use distilled water for these plants. You may also use tap water that has been left standing for awhile, before watering. You can also use weak fertiliser solutions (without lime) once in a while. It takes around one to two years for the bromeliad pups to attain full growth and bloom. It is said that blooming can be triggered in mature bromeliad plants, by placing it with a ripe apple in a clear plastic bag. The ripe apple releases ethylene gas that triggers flowering in plants. In short, growing bromeliad pups is not a difficult task, if you know the right methods. You can collect more tips from experienced people and carefully follow bromeliad care instructions for growing them successfully.The April meeting of the Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society will be held at the Mary Mckillop Centre Beerwah – Kilcoy Road Beerwah on Sunday, April 7 at 2.00 pm. Mustering successMooloolah Pony Club musters are now in full swing with our first muster in February being a huge success with a turnout of 35 riders.Instructors took riders and horses aged from two up to adults through their paces schooling flatwork, show jumping and sporting. Mooloolah Pony Club caters for riders from beginner to advanced, in any age, and judging by the smiles and laughter a great day was had by everyone.

Congratulation to our local Karate KidsBeerwah Karate Club did well at the recent Pomona Karate Competition. Abbey Shaw took out a gold and bronze. Jackie Chamberlain and Gemma Ritson both went home with gold. Mackenzie Bynon, Mitchell Agnew and Sam Ritson received silver, Joe Shirley bronze and Atlanta Bynon a 4th and James Larking, who also participated in the competition.

Beerwah Ladies Golf ClubContributed by Jenny KellyThe course was still a bit damp on Thursday, so the girls played the back nine twice. We had 41 players compete in a Single Par event for trophies donated by Lyn Steele and Pauline Mason. Winner of Division 1 was Lea Doyle with a score of -1, followed by runner up Noelene Annakin with a -2. Division 2 winner was Angela Roessler who came in with a score of -1, followed by Fay Wareham with -2. NTP's on the first nine went to Teresa Keast on 16 and Jen Kelly on 18. Second time around the 16th went to Lea Garner while Anne Stockwell took out the 18th. The ball rundown went to -5.Our Weekday Pennant teams played their first matches last Monday and were magnificent, winning all their matches in both Divisions. This is a great result, well done ladies. The Weekend girls didn't fare as well with one win, one square and three losses in their last match, but there are good things to come when the team goes to Peregian Springs next week.

This week we have the sad task of informing our readers that our regular

Stars columnist Renee Badger has passed away.

Renee has brought the Stars to readers in Glasshouse Country for the last

eight years, and she will be missed by her regular followers, friends and

colleagues in the community.

Renee had a vibrant personality, was passionate about life, and had many

and varied interests. As well as being an Author, Counsellor and Columnist,

Renee was a master drummer, who loved to perform for live audiences.

Our thoughts go to Renee’s family and friends at this time.

Unfortunately as we were only informed late in the afternoon on Friday of

her passing, there are no Stars for this week.

Next week we will bring you the Stars by our new columnist.
