Recycling Council of Ontario 25th Annual Conference

By Diane Blackburn

On May 5 & 6 RecycleXchange.com participated in the Recycling Council of Ontario’s 25th Annual Conference; their first time exhibiting at this event.

The RCO hosted approximately 200 delegates over a two day period at the Holiday Inn on Airport Road in Toronto. The Region of Peel was the official host municipality. The conference was a departure from the normal format of speakers backed by P o w e r P o i n t

presentations. The RCO chose a panel debate format which featured individuals from every

stakeholder group. This allowed for a balanced and often controversial exchange of opinions from every point of view. The discussions topics were current, relevant and inspired more than a little intense questioning during the Q & A sessions that followed each debate. The keynote speaker was Dr. Thomas Lindhqvist from Lunds University in Sweden. Dr. Lindhqvist is a renowned scientist whose original concept of Extended Producer Responsibility is the template upon which many EPR programs have been designed, world wide.

Noranda's End of Life Electronics Recycling Services

Noranda is a leading international mining and metals company with more than 48 mining and metallurgical projects in operation or under development in eight countries. With over 50 years experience in the recycling industry Noranda is one of the world's largest recyclers of electronics and a major recycler of copper, nickel, gold, silver, platinum, palladium and lead. At their new fully permitted Brampton facility, located at 275 Steelwell Road, the goal of Noranda Recycling is to process at least 1,000,000 lbs per month of end of life electronics such as computers, printers, fax machines, and copiers. 100% of the electronic hardware is recycled. Once the equipment arrives on-site, workers first manually remove any hazards such as batteries, toner, and mercury bulbs. Next, the equipment is fed into a series of three

shredders that reduce the equipment to 2-inch pieces. Finally, a series of mechanical separation technologies separate the electronic pieces into aluminum, steel, copper etc. Each output stream is then sent to smelters for

recovery into new metals. One of strengths of Noranda Recycling is that 50% of the output from their Brampton plant is sent to Noranda's own copper smelter for recovery. The remaining 50% flows to processors who meet Noranda Recycling environmental standards. No outputs are shipped overseas. Monitors are disassembled in Brampton: the leaded CRT glass is then shipped to Noranda’s lead smelter in New Brunswick for lead recovery, and the balance of the monitor is fed into the shredding separation process in Brampton. Other key benefits t h a t N o r a n d a recycling services can o f f e r t o t h e i r customers include: 100% electronic hardware recycling; certified destruction; d o w n s t r e a m accountability; no hardware landfilling; fully permitted facility; extensive EH&S practices; asset management; and no export overseas. You can be assured that the e-waste generated by Noranda’s customers will be recycled domestically in an environmentally sound manner.
