Editors – Bradford & Lynne Walters Volume 18 – Issue 2 February 2011 ypical Chicagoland weather. Over 2 feet of snow dumps on us with two weeks of frigid temperatures and in just days it is up in the forties and everything is melting. I’ve always heard it said that if you don’t like the weather here, just wait. Indoor flying is still going strong while we wait for the warmer weather and drier conditions. I know some of us will be at our field this week either with snow skiis on or off of our planes. Only a few of us brave souls have been outside flying. Dumb thumbs still happen, even with indoor flying. I put one of my small electric helicopters tail-in first the other day and am now awaiting parts for the rebuild. A lot of you have either been building, or like me, rebuilding your fleet. I’m sure we will see quite a few new aircraft at the field this spring and summer. A good indication of that is from all of the Show and Tell at our meetings. This year’s Winter Banquet was another success with about 45 members and their families. Magic Dave Productions held our attention while he and his assistant left all of us wondering, with his prestidigitations, how did he just do that. All of the members went home with a raffle prize, as did five of the ladies with gift cards. Special thanks go to Ad Venture Hobbies, Hobbytown of Northbrook, Larry Bochenko, Bob Breckler, Cliff Kroening, and Lynne Walters for their donations to the raffle. Time to renew your memberships for Blue Max and the AMA, which both expired the first of the year. The AMA is requiring that the leadership status form be returned by March 1 st . I will be mailing it in on Tues., Feb. 22 nd . Don’t get left off of the list, renew at the Feb 21 st meeting or before. See you at the field and at the meetings. THE ANSWER TO JANUARY’S NAME THAT PLANE

The name of the plane is the Martin Canberra EB-57B. Larry Bochenko was the first to answer itcorrectly and will receive a free raffle ticket at this month’s meeting. Bob Wisinski also answeredcorrectly. This aircraft was one of a small number of British combat aircraft to be produced under license in theUnited States. Designed for the Royal Air Force as a high altitude medium bomber, it was the first jet to cross theAtlantic Ocean. See picture below.

FEBRUARY’S NAME THAT PLANE In the 1960’s, this country’s military sought a new aircraft with short runway performance. Other requirementsincluded supersonic ability at low level, mach 2 performance at high altitude, and the ability to make shortlandings at low angles of attack. With the development of the turbo fan engines, this aircraft was the first to utilizetwo unique options that at the time other aircraft were using only one or the other of the two options, allowing it tobe a good STOL aircraft. This aircraft made its maiden flight in early 1967. Send all responses to Bradford Walters at [email protected].
