Turkish Students Visit to Docklands Academy

On the 28th June 2019, Sixth Form Turkish Language students from Edmonton County school visited the Docklands

Academy. The purpose of the visit was to introduce the students to academics and professionals with the aim of

inspiring them to continue with their academic studies in pursuit of professional careers.

When we arrived at the academy we were greeted by Mrs Canan Ejder the director of the Academy. Before the tour

refreshments were provided in the canteen. The tour began with a speech by Mrs Aysegul in the conference room, she

provided information about the faculties at the Academy. Mrs Aysegul invited other lectures at the Academy to share

their academic experiences.

After the tour Mr Efe took the students to a nearby and very well-known Turkish restaurant called Hazev for lunch. We

were served in a private part of the restaurant. The restaurant’s owner also joined the students for lunch and shared

his own career experiences. He said that he would welcome any Sixth Form students to contact him if they were

interested in working at the restaurant for their Work Experience.

Feedback from the Sixth Form students was very positive. All of the students felt that the visit had been very

worthwhile and inspirational.

GCSE and A Level Product Design Trip to Harry Potter Studios Tour

On Wednesday 3rd July, fifty nine GCSE and A Level Product Design

students visited the Harry Potter Studio Tour at Leavesden Studios to see

some of the many sets, props, models, art work and costumes which

were created as part of the film franchise and use this to support the

development work and models they produce for their coursework.

After leaving all of our compasses with security for safe keeping;

students were allowed to explore the Studio Tour in small groups.

Page 8: Edmonton County School · GSE and A Level Product Design Trip to Harry Potter Studios Tour On Wednesday 3rd July, fifty nine GSE and A Level Product Design students visited the Harry

The students were mesmerised and inspired by

the scale and detail in all of the work and spent

a long time examining the exhibits in detail.

They were also amazed at the number of rooms

the Studio Tour contained. Students also

enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the

interactive elements of the Studio Tour, learning

how green screen is created, how they

manufacture props, how they make the models, special effects and prosthetics.

Some students also tried Butterbeer (non-alcoholic) for first time, although it didn’t

prove to be very popular! The students behaviour throughout the trip was excellent

and all students gained a lot of valuable knowledge from the trip.

Thank you to Mrs Chambi, Ms Chandler, Ms Hides, Mrs Vestberg-Thomas and Mr

Pomeroy for attending the trips with the students. Below are some of the quotes

from the students:

“The trip was amazing and educational as it teaches you how to

be without teachers but responsible, mature and independent.” -

Razan, Year 10 student

“This trip would help as I learnt about the measurements and materials. It was such a enjoyable time, seeing how much

jobs there are for a movie. I mostly liked the effects.” - Susan, Year 10 student

“Going on the Harry Potter Studio was an amazing experience where I was introduced to many things such as how the

movies were created. My favourite parts during the tour was the creations that was involved in the movies and the

architecture of the buildings. The use of the different material in their work helps me with my photography and art

course for ideas with experimentations.” - Yazdaan, Year 12 student

“I enjoyed looking at the concept art and seeing how the initial idea for a character like Voldemort was altered through

makeup and special effects. This trip has helped me understand the different ways in which a person can be represented

for my portrait project.” - Cameron, Year 12 student

Faraday Challenge Day

On Tuesday 15th January 2019 Year 8 students took part in a Faraday Challenge Day which was run in conjunction with

the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in partnership with Jack Petchey

Foundation.

The IET Faraday Challenge Days are Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering (STEM)

activities delivered as a competition to students. Students worked in groups to design and

develop their proposals for the top secret design brief through experimenting with

modelling materials and electronic equipment. To gain access to these students were given

120 Faraday notes to purchase a range of different materials to help build their design.

These ranged from paper, card, correx, motors, buzzers and lamps. Students then pitched

their ideas to a member of the IET who judged and awarded our school with a winning

trophy.

Congratulations to Team 5 who were:

Aminah Akhtar, Tanisha Aslam, Gamze

Alam, Amelia Cwiek and Hazel Leigh. The

winners won a £10 Amazon voucher for

themselves and a trophy for the school. They

have also secured a Team visit to the IET

headquarters in the summer term.

Thank you to Ms Hides, Mr Fleming, Fauzia Haji and Cameron Fairbank supporting the event.

Below are some of the quotes from the pupils

“I have learnt that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are used in everyday life” Omar

“I have enjoyed being able to be creative with my team.” Hazel

“I have enjoyed learning about Engineering and the James Webb Space

Telescope.”

“Working with collaborating with others improves your ideas.”

“I have learnt that teamwork is the most important thing”

Jack Petchey Achievement Awards 2019

The Jack Petchey Achievement awards are given every year to students who have done something that needs to be

recognised and rewarded within our school community.

The following students have been selected by Faculty teams to win an award for their achievements and dedication at

school and they are all very deserving winners

Cansu Gedik - Year 13

Cansu is a dedicated and hardworking student who has gone the extra mile on many

occasions during her 7 years at Edmonton County School. She can be relied on to

support and promote the Expressive Arts Faculty during open evenings, taster sessions,

curriculum evenings and school community events, developing her confidence and

public speaking abilities. Cansu is dedicated and meticulous in her approach to her

subjects, making sure all receive a similar amount of time and ‘juggling’ 3 creative

subjects at once. Consequently, she has secured both conditional and unconditional

offers at universities to study Architecture due to the strength of her work.

Laurel Anadaraj - Year 10

Consistently hard working with impressive homework submission rate. Coupled with a

high level of classwork, she has risen from a mixed-low ability class from Year 9 into a

set 1 class in GCSE Chemistry. Laurel has also managed to keep her scores impressive

by managing to keep in the top 10% of scores (which is a high performing group).

Finally she had stated how much she hated Chemistry – but actually enjoys it as one of

best subjects. This suggests she is intellectually stimulated and makes her best effort to

persevere.

Aysegul Askar - Year 11

I nominate Aysegul Askar for the passion and dedication she has demonstrated in her

Art GCSE projects this year. Aysegul goes above and beyond to explore and experiment

with her ideas and has a confident contextual understanding of how to explore her own

artistic styles through the artists she is influenced by.

Aysegul isn’t afraid to take creative risks and regularly asks for feedback on her work

which allows her to develop her ideas successfully as well as challenge her skills.

As well as being a determined Art student, Aysegul is a positive, friendly and outgoing

student who is a pleasure to teach.

Page 11: Edmonton County School · GSE and A Level Product Design Trip to Harry Potter Studios Tour On Wednesday 3rd July, fifty nine GSE and A Level Product Design students visited the Harry

Oana Groza - Year 11 Oana Groza has made amazing progress in Maths over the two years she has been with

us. She joined Edmonton County School from Romania in Sept 2016 in Year 9. She

struggled with English as an additional language but has worked hard and has been

successful in overcoming this. Having taken the in-year admissions test, she was put

into Set 6 for Maths but it quickly became clear that she was keen to learn and she

pushed herself to do more. As a result, almost every term since she has moved up a

set and she is now in Set 2 for Maths! She continues to do well and is among the top

in the class here too.

Danyal Butt - Year 9

Danyal is a fantastic role model in languages. He is engaged in every lesson and

complete both tasks and extensions to a very high standard. Danyal has the ability to

learn new vocabulary and grammar structures very quickly. He can adapt languages

successfully to express his own ideas and make the content of his answers interesting

by using precise vocabulary and complex language.

Danyal completes all his homework and learns independently. He is able to explain to

the group a specific grammar point and support students around when they need it.

Danyal is working at the higher Tier Level of the course.

Krishma Kaur - Year 8

Krishma is an incredibility motivated, enthusiastic and helpful student in DT, who only

joined Edmonton County School at the beginning of Year 8. She always arrives early and

helps to set up the practical workshops, even when it is not her timetabled lesson.

Krishma has grown in confidence this year; she regularly offers to assist peers with their

practical work and can be counted to share her knowledge with peers during class

discussions. Krishma has a keen interest in all things related to DT and Technology and

will discuss this at length with peers and staff. Krishma has also returned to her previous

school and assisted her DT teacher there with promoting DT to prospective students.

Jack Petchey Leaders Award - Congratulations to Miss Halil - Student Manager

Miss Halil was nominated by her peers for a Jack Petchey Leaders award:

Emete has been a Student Manager to the upper phase for two years now and she has been

supporting students at all times in the day to make sure that they are equipped for school,

ready for learning and feel safe in school. She knows each student and develops personal

relationships with each one of them so that they know there is always someone to go to

when they need help. She works above and beyond her contracted hours to make sure that

all is well for students. She contributes to the good order of the school by volunteering every

lunch break to watch over students and she mediates with staff and students frequently to

facilitate good relationships between these too. She exhibits a can do attitude and never

gives up!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS WHO WILL ATTEND THE JACK PETCHEY AWARDS CEREMONY IN SPRING

TERM 2020.

ENFIELD MUSIC SERVICES - PIANO COMPETITION 2019

The annual Piano Competition in Enfield had over 60 entrants this year from Secondary and Primary. Enfield Music

Services said ‘all the pupils did really well, regardless of whether they have been chosen to take part in the final’.

We are proud to announce that Romina Brown in Year 10 entered this

competition. She went through the audition process and was selected to play

in the final along with 8 other Secondary school finalists. Romina is Grade 4 in

piano and about to take her Grade 5 exams.

Romina has currently been performing her piece at

the two school Presentation Evenings this week.

Well done to Romina who will be performing in the

competition final at the Dugdale Centre in Enfield on

Tuesday 16th July at 7.00pm.

We are all very proud of Romina and wish her lots of Luck in the competition.

National Portrait Gallery Art and Photography Trip 2019

On the 2nd and 4th of July the Year 9 Art and Photography

students had the opportunity to visit the National Portrait

Gallery. This was an excellent experience for students to

witness artwork first hand, by a variety of artists, as well as

seeing the 2019 BP Portrait Award exhibition.

The Year 9 students were joined by eight Year 10 Art and Photography

students, who were selected as a reward for their

excellent work during the year.

Students were able to make sketches, take

photographs and have a fantastic introduction to

portraiture in preparation for their year 10

‘Portraits and Self-identity’ project, which they will

start researching for over the summer holidays.

Page 13: Edmonton County School · GSE and A Level Product Design Trip to Harry Potter Studios Tour On Wednesday 3rd July, fifty nine GSE and A Level Product Design students visited the Harry

‘I enjoyed looking at the artworks close up to see all the brush strokes. It’s different in

real life than on a board at school’ – Melis Aliriza - 9B2 Art Student

‘I like drawing the portraits in the gallery and seeing all the different pictures. My

favourite ones were the family portraits’ - Nazmul Chowdury - 9C2 Photography

Student

‘I enjoyed looking at portraits and trying to recreate them through my drawings. It was

my first time going to a gallery like that and it was very interesting.’ – Breshna Gul -

9C2 Art Student

Photography students had the opportunity to see the portrait photography

work of John Stezaker, an artist they will be studying in the upcoming year.

Students saw how artwork can take all kinds of forms; be it painting,

photography, sculpture and digital art. Pictured to the right was a display that

featured a specially produced film, Marriage (2018) This featured hundreds of

publicity portraits of actors and actresses screened at twenty-four frames per

second, the film references the film industry’s standard projection rate for

creating the optical illusion of movement.

Students were exposed to different styles and ways that artists work, in the hope to spark their own creativity going

forward into their first GCSE project. They behaved professionally and respectfully around the gallery and produced

some fantastic sketches which will go towards their coursework.

Thank you to all staff who attended the trip to help support and inspire our students

throughout each day as well as all cover teachers who covered our lessons.

BP Portrait Award runs until the 20th of October 2019 with free admission.
