Serve.ThemottowasselectedaswordstolivebyandhascometorepresentallemployeesoftheEdmontonPoliceServiceanddefineswhatitmeanstobeapartofthisorganization.Italsohelpshighlighteveryonesroleinthedevelopmentandexecutionoftheorganizationsoverallstrategy.</p><p>ThepurposeofthemapistorepresenttheEdmontonPoliceServicescorevalues,mission,visionandstrategyinonediagram,providingaframeworkorcontextwithinwhichtheEPScanmanageandoperateintothefuture.ThisframeworkwillbeusedbytheseniorleadershipandallemployeesoftheEPStosetobjectives,evaluatecurrentandproposedactivities,providedirection,communicateandleadoperations.Itisimportantthatthemission,visionandstrategyareclearlystatedandunderstoodbyall.AnyaspectorfunctionoftheEPSshouldbeabletobedescribedusingthestrategyandeachpersonwithinEPSshouldfeelthattheyarerepresentedwithinit.</p><p>ClearlydocumentingthesestrategicelementsallowsforgreaterfocuswithintheEPSandbetteralignmentacrosstheorganization.Activities,newinitiatives,organizationalstructure,businessprocessesandobjectivescanbeassessedwhileusingthestrategyforguidance.DecisionscanthenbemadeandanyrequiredchangesimplementedtobringtheEPSclosertoachievingthestatedgoals.</p><p>ThestrategyisalsoinalignmentwiththebroaderCityofEdmontongoals.TherearespecificgoalswithintheCityofEdmontonsTheWayAheadStrategicPlanthatthisstrategysupports.Forinstance:</p><p>The Vision</p><p>Manypeoplemistakethevisionstatementforthemissionstatement,andsometimesoneissimplyusedasalonger-termversionoftheother.Howevertheyaremeanttobequitedifferent,withthevisionbeinganaspirationalanddescriptivepictureofadesiredfuturestate,whilethemissionisastatementofspecific,attainablebusinesspurposeorrationalethatisapplicablenowandinthefuture.Themissionisthereforethemeansweusetosuccessfullyachieveourvision.</p><p>Edmonton byofferingspecifictypesofservices</p><p>The EPS mission is: To increase public safety through excellence in the prevention, intervention and suppression of crime and disorder.</p><p>IncreasingpublicsafetyandsecurityisthecorebusinessoftheEPS.Itinvolvesensuringthewelfareandprotectionofthegeneralpublic.TheEPSprimarystakeholderisthepublicwhichincludescitizens,businessesandvisitors.Crimeanddisorderreferstoactivitiesprohibitedbylaw,dangeroustothecommunityornotgenerallyacceptabletothepublic.Thisincludeseverythingfromtrafficandminorpropertydamageuptoandincludingcrimessuchashomicideandterrorism.</p><p>EPSaddressescrimeanddisorderthroughthefollowingtypesofactivities:</p><p>Prevention:Activitiesthataimtomodifyorremovefactorsleadingtocrimeanddisorder</p><p>Intervention:Actstakentobreakthechainofcriminalcausation</p><p>Suppression:Activitiestostop,subdue,ormitigateactsofcrimeordisorderandhold offendersaccountable</p><p>TheEPSmissionenablesustodifferentiateourselvesfromtheotherpartsofthejustice,healthandsocialsystemswhoalsocontributetoandpartnerwithusinprovidingpublicsafetyandsecurity.</p><p>What influences our operations</p><p>ThereareanumberoffactorsandoperationalnecessitiesthathaveledtheEPStodobusinessinaparticularway.Policingisaresponseorientedbusinesssotheorganizationmustfirsttakeintoaccountfactorsinourexternalenvironmentsuchasgeography,demographics,technology,majorevents,etc.thatcreateriskandchallenges.TheinternalenvironmentalsocreatesspecificriskfactorssuchasthecontinuallychangingdemographicsofEPSpersonnel,theirexperienceandcapacity.</p><p>TheEPSdoesnothaveunlimitedresourcessoweemployanintelligencebasedapproachtodeployintotheareaswheretheycanhavethegreatesteffect.Thismeansthatdetaileddata-gatheringandanalysisisrequiredtoguidethedeploymentofourresources.Italsoinvolvesconductingresearch,reviewingleadingpractices,assessingriskandadjustingourapproachtooptimizeperformance.</p><p>PatrolandbeatpersonnelaredeployedusingtheGeographicalDeploymentModel(GDM).Thismodelisbaseduponworkload,resourcesandgeography,andestablishestheallocationofpeopletospecificareas(Districts)toensureapromptpoliceresponsetohighpriorityincidents.ItalsoenablestheEPStomaintainavisiblepresencethroughproactivepolicingacrosstheCity.Otherpolicingandsupportactivitiesarecoordinatedcentrally.Forinstance,specializedareassuchasHomicideSectionandtheCrimeScenesInvestigationUnitsarecentralizedandrespondtorequestsfromacrosstheServiceandCity.</p><p>PartnershipsareessentialtotheEPSbusinessmodel.TheServiceinteractswithmanyotherorganizationsduringthecourseofitswork.Forinstance,theEPSmayinteractwithEmergencyMedicalServices(EMS),socialservicesandotherlawenforcementagenciesinthecourseofjustonecallforservice.Itiscriticalthataccountabilitiesarewellunderstoodwhendeliveringinpartnership.EPSpersonnelneedtoknowwhattheyareresponsibleforandwhattheyshouldexpectfrompartneragenciesandgroupsinaddressingmattersofpublicsafety.</p><p>Finally,tooperateeffectivelyinthecity,theEPSmustengagetheassistanceofthecommunity.Increasingpublicsafetyisthekeytothemission,andthepublichasasignificantroletoplayincontributingtothat.Understandingofthemake-up,needsandcircumstancesofthecommunity,maintainingthepublictrustandengagingwiththemeffectivelywillcontinuetoassisttheEPSindeliveringonitsmission.</p><p>Our
