History Of ECSU

Since our inception in 1891, Elizabeth City State University has been known as an institution that teaches, trains and molds today's students into tomorrow's leaders. Every achievement, every discovery and every step of progression is fueled by our unwavering determination to provide affordable academics and exceptional programs on our campus.
Our first leader, Peter W. Moore, would have been proud to see growth so profound at this remarkable institution. We proudly embrace our history and mission as a historically black college or university (HBCU), while welcoming, attracting and retaining a wonderful mix of ethnicities and cultural backgrounds representative of today's global economy.
This year we celebrate our 125th anniversary, touting the motto, "A Proud Heritage of Inspired Excellence." For 125 years, ECSU has persevered through impossibility – transforming dreams and ideas into reality. We hope you will join us in this celebration as we honor our illustrious past and move forward in building a bright future and unmistakable pride for ECSU.

Our Community/City
Affectionately known as the Harbor of Hospitality, Elizabeth City is nestled in the northeastern corner of North Carolina on the Pasquotank River and Intracoastal Waterway. The City lies just west of the Outer Banks of North Carolina and just south of Hampton Roads, Virginia. Although our community is small it boasts an abundance of bookstores, coffeehouses, wine and gourmet food shops and specialty retail shops all located in historic buildings.
Elizabeth City is also home to a vibrant arts and cultural scene comprised of art galleries, museums, theater performances and national touring shows. Currently housed at the Museum of the Albemarle, is the ECSU
125th Anniversary Exhibit: Elizabeth City State University – A Legacy of Excellence and Resilience.
Our successful relationships and partnerships within the Elizabeth City business community afford our students benefits where they gain an abundance of hands-on experience at one of the U.S. Coast Guard’s busiest bases, including learning how to fly planes.
Just like our university, Elizabeth City is rich in history – yet progressive and growing. The inviting waterfront, lively
downtown and thriving arts community create a vibrant setting for the place we Vikings call home.
