ABOUT THE QUIZ

This quiz is supposed to help you think about all the aspects of Science. Science is what makes the world go round, it’s what made you. There are many things about Science we have learned, and there are even more things we have not even begun to learn about. There are things out there we don’t even know why they exist.

I WILL ASK YOU QUESTION ABOUT SCIENCE

Each question has 1 right answer. If you answer correctly it will state why it is correct. If you answer incorrectly it will state why it is incorrect.

You will be able to go back to each question if you get the answer wrong, or you can go on to the next question.

SCIENCE

• Definition of Science:• the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of

the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

Page 5: EDUCATION Mini Quiz on fun facts about Science By: Bethany Harper

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SCIENCE:

There is Earth and Environmental Science and Physical Science. All 3 are needed to understand how the world works, and how we are even living on this earth.

There are over 40 jobs that have to do with Science.

This little quiz is to touch base on a couple general science questions just to see what you may know, and hopefully to learn something new as well.

This quiz should not scare you. Try to have fun, and think about Science in a positive way.

INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETAL PERSPECTIVE ON SCIENCE

• Individual: Scientists become famous for discovering new things that change how we think about nature, whether the discovery is a new species

of dinosaur or a new way in which atoms bond. Many scientists find their greatest joy in a previously unknown fact (a discovery) that explains something problem previously not explained, or that overturns some

previously accepted idea.

• Societal: This is a little harder to describe. Some say society stresses science to help others. Others say economic development. I think it’s mainly

about humans wanting to learn what is around them. We have been made to be able to think on our own, to ask questions. Science is a great way to

understand the why’s you may be asking yourself.

WHAT CAUSES A RAINBOW?

A. The sky

B. The grass

C. Light and water

D. A Leprechaun

Page 8: EDUCATION Mini Quiz on fun facts about Science By: Bethany Harper

INCORRECT

The sky may be where the rainbow shows up. But, rainbows do not just appear in the sky. When light shines into water, the rays of light refract, or bend, at different angles. Different colors bend at different angles--red bends the least and violet the most. When light passes through a raindrop at a certain angle, the rays separate into the colors of the spectrum-and you see a beautiful rainbow.

INCORRECTUnfortunately grass really has nothing to do with the rainbow. A full rainbow may look like it’s coming up through the grass, but a rainbow happens when light shines into water, the rays of light refract, or bend, at different angles. Different colors bend at different angles--red bends the least and violet the most. When light passes through a raindrop at a certain angle, the rays separate into the colors of the spectrum-and you see a beautiful rainbow.

INCORRECTUnfortunately all of the stories you hear about Leprechaun's and their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow are not true. Rainbows occur when light shines into water, the rays of light refract, or bend, at different angles. Different colors bend at different angles--red bends the least and violet the most. When light passes through a raindrop at a certain angle, the rays separate into the colors of the spectrum-and you see a beautiful rainbow.

CORRECTGreat job! Although light looks colorless, it’s made up of many colors-red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. These colors are known as the spectrum. When light shines into water, the rays of light refract, or bend, at different angles. Different colors bend at different angles--red bends the least and violet the most. When light passes through a raindrop at a certain angle, the rays separate into the colors of the spectrum-and you see a beautiful rainbow.

WHY DO CATS ALWAYS LAND ON THEIR FEET?A. Balance

B. Skeletal Structure

C. Whiskers

D. Luck

Page 13: EDUCATION Mini Quiz on fun facts about Science By: Bethany Harper

INCORRECT

Balance may be the reason the cat was able to stay on the fence and meow all night, but not how it always lands on it’s feet. Actually, cats don’t have a collarbone, and the bones in their spine are more flexible than other animals. This makes it easier from them to bend and rotate their bodies easier during a short fall.Back to question Next question

Page 14: EDUCATION Mini Quiz on fun facts about Science By: Bethany Harper

INCORRECT

Whiskers may help cats fit through small holes, but they aren’t going to help them land on their feet. Actually, Cats don’t have a collarbone, and the bones in their spine are more flexible than other animals. This makes it easier from them to bend and rotate their bodies easier during a short fall.

INCORRECT

Luck may have something to do with cats having 9 lives, but not with them landing on their feet all the time. Actually, cats don’t have a collarbone, and the bones in their spine are more flexible than other animals. This makes it easier from them to bend and rotate their bodies easier during a short fall.

WHAT CAUSES LIGHTNING?

A. Positive and Negative charges

B. Gravity pulling on the atmosphere

C. Rain in a storm

D. Clouds smashing together

Page 18: EDUCATION Mini Quiz on fun facts about Science By: Bethany Harper

INCORRECT

Gravity may be the force keeping you and everything else on earth, but unfortunately it is not the reason for lightening. When air rises and falls within a thunderstorm, positive and negative charges form in the cloud. The bottom of the thundercloud has a negative charge, and the top has a positive charge. A flash of lightning happens when a charge becomes so strong that the air can’t stop it from jumping from the cloud to the ground, which has a positive charge.

INCORRECT

Lightening can happen inside of clouds, but lightening is not made by clouds colliding into each other. Actually, when air rises and falls within a thunderstorm, positive and negative charges form in the cloud. The bottom of the thundercloud has a negative charge, and the top has a positive charge. A flash of lightning happens when a charge becomes so strong that the air can’t stop it from jumping from the cloud to the ground, which has a positive charge.

WHAT BODY PARTY CAUSES YOU TO FEEL DIZZY WHEN YOU SPIN?

A. Eyes

B. Nose

C. Ears

D. Neck

Page 23: EDUCATION Mini Quiz on fun facts about Science By: Bethany Harper

INCORRECT

People may think that your eyes have something to do with getting dizzy when you spin. In fact it’s tubes filled with liquid inside your ears. The liquid moves when you move, telling your brain what position your body is in. When you spin, the liquid also spins. The liquid continues to spin after you stop. Your brain thinks you’re still spinning, so you continue to feel that everything is going in circles-until the liquid stops moving.

WHY DO YOU HAVE BROWN EYES?

A. Hair color

B. Genes

C. Scientists

D. Food

Page 28: EDUCATION Mini Quiz on fun facts about Science By: Bethany Harper

INCORRECT

Unfortunately your hair color does not make your eye color, in fact they don’t even have to be the same color. They both actually come from the genes we inherit from our parents determine things like our height, looks, hair color and eye color. This passing of characteristics from parent to child is called heredity. If your mother has brown eyes, and your father has blue eyes, there’s a good chance you’ll have brown eyes. That’s because the brown-eye gene is dominant, and the blue-eye gene is recessive
