Education Week 2020 ‘Learning Together’

Did you have an opportunity to visit our learning spaces during Education Week?

The virtual tour of our school was a big hit and many parents have commented on being able to ‘see’ the fab-ulous learning taking place in the classrooms. We had hits on Google Earth as far as Singapore and Germa-ny as many students had an opportunity to share the link with family overseas. If you have not yet had a chance to take the virtual tour the link is still available bit.ly/npseduweek2020

Thank you to Mrs Lewis for her leadership and organisation of this event and to Ms Colley and Ms Chin for their behind the scenes technology skills putting the tour together.

School improvement and excellence

Commencing in 2021, every NSW public school will complete a 4 year Strategic Improvement Plan [SIP]. These plans will be informed by authentic self-assessment and evaluation, and aligned to resource allocation. Between now and the end of term 1 2021 we will develop our Strategic Improvement Plan through the following process-es. • undertake a thorough self-assessment ('Where are we now?' 'How do we know?' 'What are our next

steps?') to commence the School Excellence cycle • identify the next steps in order to develop our Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP) • consult with the community on our self-assessment to inform strategic directions • develop 3 strategic directions - the first being 'Student growth and attainment' (this goal is required for all

schools). The remaining 2 directions will be determined by our school • write a purpose statement for each strategic direction • determine projected improvement measures • incorporate our system-negotiated targets into improvement measures • establish the initiatives our school will undertake in order to achieve the improvement measures • determine observable success criteria which are underpinned by the purpose statement • create an evaluation plan as part of each strategic direction Implementation and progress monitoring will begin in term 2 2021. Each year of the 4 year plan we will conduct an annual review of progress and impact. Our school will undergo an external validation in 2022.

Evidenced-based practice in reading for school improvement

This term we are involved in a pilot project along with 25 other schools across NSW. A Literacy and Numeracy Strategy Advisor [LANSA] has been appointed to our school to collect information about our school’s approach to reading and to provide support in improving practice in reading across the school, K-6. Teachers have been engaging with contemporary literature and research pertaining to effective reading instruc-tion in the early years of school. Targeted professional learning relating to the six elements of reading instruction (oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension) will be delivered by the LANSA over the course of this term. This project is in consultation with the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation [CESE], School Services and Learning and Teaching. We are very fortunate to be able to participate in this project as the data collected will be used to help determine the direction of literacy teaching and learning in our Strategic Improvement Plan.

Kindergarten 2021

If you are yet to lodge your enrolment application for a child starting kindergarten in 2021 or you know someone in our enrolment boundary who is yet to submit an enrolment form for a child starting kindergarten next year, could you please ensure all forms are submitted before the end of Term 3. We need to start planning for 2021.

P&C

On behalf of the staff at NPS I’d like to thank the outgoing P&C executive for their leadership of the P&C and their contributions and support to the school over the past year. Thank you to Michelle Macdonald, Antonella Shannahan, Shanty Kosasih, Mel Bozkus and Lauren Learmonth. At the P&C Annual General Meeting last week a new executive committee was elected and I look forward to working with them. The position of president was not filled. If you are interested please email the P&C [email protected]

Anti Bullying Summit

This year, 16 Year Six students known as the Anti-Bullying team, have been working on a project to prevent bul-lying. The team is trying to prevent bullying across the school and has been collecting data through a survey. In term 1, the Anti-Bullying Team had planned to launch their project, however due to COVID remote learning ar-rangements, this had to be postponed.

In week 6 this term, the Anti-Bullying Team will finally be able to launch their project and commence lessons with each class. More information about the day, written by Evan Bailey and Dahlia Chen, can be seen on the Spotlight Page. To support the anti-bullying initiative at NPS, all students should wear orange on Wednesday 26 August. Sarah Williams and Natalie Lewis (R)

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Teachers also have a current focus on kindness. In the week ahead, students will take part in structured PBL lessons focusing on how to show kindness, e.g by word or actions, or by deciding to walk away from a situation. You may like to discuss and reinforce the importance of being kind with your child. Some great picture books on the theme of kindness include: How to Heal a Broken Wing / Bob Graham (2008) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruHekRgs-TU Piggybook / Anthony Browne (1986) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bnl5DLzoNgU

SPOTLIGHT ON ANTI-

BULLYING

Anti-Bullying

Summit

Give me a BE! Give me an A! Give me a BUDDY! Give me a NOT! Give me an A! Give me

a BULLY! What does that spell? BE A BUDDY NOT A

BULLY!!!

4 students in the team went to the Anti-Bullying Summit, where they learnt a lot of things about bullying and cre-ated a plan for us to follow this year. One of the main ideas to solving bullying issues is students listen more to their peers/other students than teachers. When students teach, we know what it is like to be on the other side of the lesson. It is more relatable for other students and they tend to be more engaged. The message is more real. We are to focus on being an Upstander instead of a Bystander. In the hall, we have a positivity wall with our slogan, Be a Buddy not a Bully, made and coloured by K-3, in big letters, and positive messages from every student from 4-6. When someone is feeling down or sad, they can come up to the wall anytime and read a kind message to make them feel better about themselves. Another one of our projects is Orange Day that is on 26 August, where every student will come to school in Orange. It is the colour of Anti-Bullying and Harmony, which explains why they will wear it. So come to school head to toe in or-ange! On that day, the Anti-Bullying Team will be teaching some lessons about Anti-Bullying to EVERY YEAR IN THE SCHOOL!!! By Evan Bailey and Dahlia Chen

Give me an A! Give me an N! Give me a T! Give me an I! Give me a B! Give me a U! Give me an L! Give me another L! Give me a Y! Give me an I! Give me an N! Give me a G! What does that spell? ANTI-BULLYING! The Anti-Bullying team was created be-cause bullying is something that does not belong at our school. 30% of people from 3-6 have reported that they have been harassed online which is too big a

number. We are a group of year 6 stu-dents who are all passionate about anti-bullying, helping with the problems we have at our school, teaching, and spreading the word - BE A BUDDY NOT A BULLY! Led by Mr Fifield, we meet every Tuesday at lunch and we discuss important dates and information, present our ideas and concept lessons, and give ourselves jobs to do.

Parenting Insight

Encourage kids to occupy themselves

A child’s ability to fill in their own time and cope with moments of boredom are important independence skills to de-velop. Children have less practise at keeping themselves occupied than those of past generations. You have many jobs as a parent, but constantly entertaining your child, should not be one of them. These ideas will help:

Invite them to keep themselves busy

When your child tells you that he or she is bored they are bringing you a problem to solve. Boredom is your child’s problem, not yours. If this happens, encourage your child to keep themselves busy by asking questions such as “How can you keep yourself amused?”

Make a list

If your child is stuck for ideas make a list of activities that they can refer to when they’re bored. Include a variety of activities such as creative tasks, performance tasks, crafts, sports, indoor and outdoor games, music activities, read-ing and helping. Place the list in a convenient place with easy access and visibility.

Make a boredom buster jar

Cut up a list of boredom busting activities and place them in a jar. When your child is stuck for an idea to keep him or herself amused invite them to select an activity from the boredom buster jar. Ask your child to add enjoyable activities to the jar over time.

Encourage plenty of green-time

Today’s children spend more time in front of screens, and less time outdoors than those of previous generations. Not only is time spent in natural environments refreshing, relaxing and rejuvenating, but It’s also a wonderful way for kids to relieve boredom. Encourage your child to spend some of their free time outside in natural environments to promote good mental health and develop their confidence.

Help find their interests

If your child struggles to keep him or herself occupied, consider helping them identify a hobby or interest that they enjoy. Often finding that one activity a child loves or excels in makes a huge difference to their self-esteem and well-being, and can become the driver for future career choice.

Build in downtime

A trait common among healthy families is the propensity for everyone to enjoy spending downtime or unstructured time together. It’s during downtime that parents and children share activities together, which promotes better relation-ships and helps children’s informal learning.

Most children when given unstructured time will rise to the occasion (even after some complaining) and will find inter-esting things to do. By encouraging them to find something “to do”, other than filling their time with screen-based ac-tivities, you are promoting a fabulous life-skill in your kids.

Safety around the school

We continue to receive ongoing complaints about unsafe and illegal parking around the school. These complaints come as a genuine concern for your children’s safety. Please ensure that you are following all NSW road rules to keep our students safe around school, as they travel to school and home again. Parramatta City Council parking officers and rangers, as well as highway patrol, have been visible outside the school on several occasions over the past fortnight. Thank you to the vast majority of our school community who make student safety their priority.

Birthdays

When students returned to fulltime on-site learning in Term 2 information was communicated through eNews that cakes and treats brought in from home can not be shared for birthdays. This includes all food even if it is individually wrapped. If your child wishes to share gifts with their classmates non-edible items like stationery, stickers etc. are appropriate at this time.

Drop off and pick up

• Make alternate drop off and pick up arrangements if you are unwell

• Maintain social distancing

• Avoid gathering outside the school gate
