New School Year

Welcome to the start of the 2019 school year and the first edition for the year of ‘The Croak’. Welcome back to all our returning students and families and a very warm welcome to our many new students from Kindergarten to Year 6 and their families.

Class Structure Our 2019 classes were formed yesterday after our draft plan was modified following the loss of further students. As I mentioned in the Enews email on Monday we only have enough students for 34 classes (based on the DoE formula), however for a number of strong educational reasons, with students at the centre of the decision, we will use the flexibility and autonomy we now have in our budget to fund a 35th class teacher. Should we have extra enrolments during the year we may reach that number where the DoE would then fund the position and our school funds can be re-directed to other programs. I will speak further about this at the P&C meeting next week.

Staffing Update We welcome Miss Anna Daniels as a new permanent teacher and congratulate her on her appointment to our school.

Welcome back to: Mrs Amy Kimes (5-6H) after 2 very successful years as a PBL Assistant Principal/Coach Mentor working across schools in Sydney and Mrs Ros Xagoraris (RFF) who is returning part-time after maternity leave.

We also welcome back these teachers who will fill temporary, contracted positions this year: Mrs Wendy Wilson (3A); Mrs Margarita Sozomenou (RFF); Ms Zoe Kogias (6K); Mr Warwick Whitelaw (3W); Mrs Katie Whitelaw (2W); Ms Lynh Mai (RFF); Mrs Jasmin West (Lib); Ms Magdalene Lumenta (4L); Ms Ferda Adar (5A); Mrs Margaret Mansfield (KM); Mrs Munira Mangerah & Mrs Eleni Gavrilos(2MG); Mrs Kim Daniels (LAST– Fri); Ms Zoe Donovan (4D); Ms Aimee Celestino (2C); Ms Tamara Atachparian (KA); Mrs Kim Cross (5C); Ms Mary Chin (1M).

Assistant Principals (AP)—due to leave being taken by our substantive APs—Mrs Emma Gibson (Yr 1); Ms Frances Colley (Yr2-Thurs & Fri) and Ms Wendy Stanton (Stage 2—Fri) will relieve as APs during the year.

For the first time our school has access to a School Counsellor each day. Mr Dean McManus returns and will be here Monday, Tues-day, Friday and Wednesday mornings (even weeks). We welcome Mrs Lara Lambkin who will be here every Thursday and Wednes-days (odd weeks).

Mrs Josie Barron will be leaving us tomorrow (Fri 8) to begin her maternity leave in readiness for the birth of her baby. We wish her all the very best and look forward to her return in the future.

Our Administration team led by Mrs Josie Dickinson remains the same for Term 1.

Classroom and Grounds Maintenance During the holidays the regular maintenance tasks such as pest spraying, air-conditioning servicing and repairs and grounds up-keep were carried out. More substantially 5 demountable classrooms (D8, D10, D11, D12 & D3) had their roofs and some side walls replaced. Hopefully this puts an end to any further leaks! Carpet replacement has already occurred in D10 & D11 with D3, D8 & D12 to be com-pleted in the coming weeks.

P&C Meeting #1 Our first P&C meeting of the year is Tuesday 12 February starting at 7.30pm in the Library. Parents and carers ‘old’ and new to our school are welcome to attend the meeting. The Annual General Meeting, where elected positions are determined, is the second meeting which will be held on Tuesday 19 March. To vote at meetings parents must be financial members of the P&C Association.

Welcome back! Welcome back for another year of learning at Newington PS! All grade, stage and support teams have been very busy preparing for the year’s curriculum, as well as programs and events to support all students’ academ-ic, social and physical development from Kindergarten to Year 6. We remind you of the Schools A-Z website, which has a wealth of information about supporting your child throughout their schooling. Here is a link to the site with useful articles about: Help with Homework English A to Z Maths A to Z School Transitions Wellbeing Starting School Quick guide for parents.

Deputy Principal Stickers During the school day, teachers often send students to our office to show us the great work that they are doing in the classroom. It is important for students to be able to share their work and celebrate their improvements and success, and receive immediate feedback. Deputy Principal stickers are just one way of promoting this within our school. Student names will be listed here in The Croak and the reason for the acknowledgement.

Tips for packing their lunch boxes Pack food that is easy to open, easy to eat and not messy.

Write their name on their lunch box, water bottle and any other containers.

Include a frozen drink bottle to keep food cold. Wrap it in a tea towel in case it leaks.

Use insulated lunch boxes or cooler bags.

Avoid using plastic wrap because children find it hard to pull apart, paper bags are better for the environment too.

Pack tissues or paper around fruit so it won’t bruise.

Remind your child to wash their hands before eating and use the toilet at recess and lunch.

Duty of Care—Supervision/Collection of Students at home time Parents are asked to inform the school about changes to arrangements regarding who may or may not collect students from school. This applies particularly to our younger students. In most cases a known parent, relative, carer or friend collects children from school. However, if these arrangements change from day to day, it is re-quested that you inform the school or class teacher with regards to who is taking a child home. This should be in writing (email) or a phone call to our Admin Office. If your child is to be collected by a friend, neighbour or a relative who is not the usual person we need to know. Teachers endeavour to keep a check on which adults are collecting students but in the busy and congested time around 3.00pm it is important that teachers have the correct information. If the teacher is not sure about who is collecting a child we will endeavour to make contact with you to clarify the situation.

Parents are asked to inform the Admin Office with regards to Before and After School Care arrange-ments. Which provider and which days your child is with a particular provider.

The swimming carnival was held on Tuesday 5 Febraury at the Ruth Everuss Pool at Lidcombe in lovely weather conditions. Students demonstrated a desire to achieve personal bests in all competitive and novelty events they entered. House spirit was evident as students cheered and encouraged their team mates. The winning House was Sauvage. Congratulations to all those who earned points for their House. Thanks go to Mr Oliveira and Mr O’Flaherty who led the organisation and management of the carnival and to all our staff who took part as event or house supervisors; and to all our many parent volunteers who gave their time to help run the day’s program of events. It was great to hear positive feedback from parents about the venue and also the organisation of the whole event. RESULTS AND ZONE TEAM WILL BE IN THE NEXT CROAK.

2019 Swimming Carnival A very sincere thank you to all the parent helpers that assisted on Tuesday at the swimming carnival.
