Abstract: Kolli hills is located in Nammakal District, Tamilnadu , India, has an area of
418.5 sq.km. The hill is bounded by Nammakal in the south and south west. Rasipuram is
in the North east. Attur Taluk is in the North and Tiruchirappalli district in the east. Kolli
hills are also called Sathuragiri or square hill. The hill contain of high rising peak and
ravines. The highest point in Kolli hills is 4663 feet above M.S.L, but the general level
of the upper surface of the hills is not more than 3500 feet( 1000m), Its eastern and
northern flanks drain either into Thurayur valley or the valley of the Periyar. The present
paper is educational status of the hill regions at the present decades. Including their

Profile and Socio-Economic Development of a Tribe of Central Himalaya. India, the
provision of tribal education is important since the tribal population of 84 million
accounting for 8.21 percent of the total population in 2001 is larger than any other
country in the World. On an average difference between the literacy rate of general
population and that of scheduled tribes has been around 15 percent. While at the national
level, literacy among males was estimated as 75.9 percent and for females as 54.2
percent, the corresponding figures with regard to tribal males and females were found to
be 59.2 percent and 34.8 percent in 2001. 'Socio-Economic Survey of Tribal ‘s Kerala'

most comprehensive survey on the Scheduled Tribes of Kerala. Subramanyam Naidu

Study area
The Kollimalai or Kolli Hills are one of the seven hill ranges constituting the
Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu, situated in Namakkal district. It lies west of the
Pacchaimalais, with a total area of 503 sq. km. The altitude ranges from 180 m to 1415 m
above sea level. It is 32 km away from the Namakkal town and 120 km away from the
study centre. Geographically it is situated between 11° 10’ 00” to 11° 30’ 00” N and 78°
15’ 00” to 78° 30’ 00” E (Fig.1). The tribals who live in the Kolli hills and the adjacent
hills like the Kalrayan hills, the Shevaroy hills, the Javadi hills, the Pachamalai hills are
called ‘Malayalis’ or hill-dwellers. Among the total population of Kolli hills 94.8% are
tribal’s as per the Census of India (1991). The houses are situated in elevated rocky
places. The number of houses per hamlet ranges from 10 to 200. The main occupation is
agriculture and cattle rearing. They cultivate paddy as wet crop and the tapioca, the

• To study the present school locations with tribal villages
• To measure the distance from the remote villages with schools in the various
categories.
• To analysis the mean distance and maximum distance of the schools in tribal
villages with new sites through GIS.
Research Methodology
The present study focus to educational status and mean distance of schooling in
and around of the kolli hill environment. The base line information of schools and other
educational points with benefit of the tribal villages in the study area mapped through the
field visit with Survey of India toposheet, scale of 1:50,000 and Arc/GIS software.
