Welcome to Ms. Sarah Anderson, Ms. Fawna Lovatsis, Ms. Sarah Sousa, Mrs. Annie Song, and Mr. Chhay Sun. As we welcome new staff, we also need to say our good-byes to Mr. Harold Clarke who joins the David Suzuki P.S. staff and Mrs. Megan Wilson who starts a new life in Belleville, Ontario. In addition, we offer a big E.T. Crowle greeting to our new Superintendant, Mr. Peter Tse. We are all excited about our journey forward in the school year. Even with these changes, as a staff, we continue to be strongly committed to developing our literacy and mathematics programming and a culture of mutual respect. Weaving reading, writing and critical thinking into all aspects of the program is one of the ways we are maximizing opportunities for students to hone their comprehension and writing skills. Research shows that working closely with parents/guardians increases student achievement. We encourage you to look for ways at home where you can provide your child with opportunities to expand their horizons (e.g., talking about world issues, items in the news, history, etc.). Using the internet and trips to the local library are some of the ways students can investigate things in which they are interested. The grand opening of the Learning Commons is well underway. This 21 st century remaking of the traditional library concept has added to the busy-ness at E.T. Crowle. With the support and leadership of Ms. Moore, the Learning Commons has had an exciting start of the new school year with an intentional “hum of activity with students talking, learning, searching for information on a variety of devices, focusing on content creation and synthesizing of information.” (Keechlin, Rosenfeld, and Loerttscher). We continue the work with students to understand the impact of their actions and words and how they can communicate and play together in a respectful manner. Parents/guardians play a key role in helping to foster home and school cultures that are intolerant to bullying and accepting of all people. A great deal of bullying is rooted in insults, comments and taunts that question a child’s masculinity/femininity and/or denigrate his/her culture, religion and/or appearance. Letting your children know that you find this kind of behaviour to be reprehensible is one way we can help our students to build positive friendships and an environment that is welcoming to all. We shall continue to work hard to ensure that our partnership with parents remains strong and meaningful. Parents are encouraged to support their child's education by getting involved in the life of the school by joining one of our committees, volunteering and/or providing input into decision-making through our School Council. Please call Mrs. Norton and/or Mrs. Sumi, our office administrators, if you are able to help out. As we begin the new year, we ask that you work with your child to instill good habits such as getting up early enough to have a good breakfast and getting to school on time. Arriving even a few minutes late results in your child missing valuable classroom instruction. Supervision on our playground begins at 8:45 a.m. We are continuing with BOOMERANG LUNCHES this year. This means that all waste from lunches and snacks (leftover food and packaging) goes back home with students. At E.T. Crowle we are committed to helping your child succeed. CROWLE NEWS

From the Principal ’ s desk…

On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our E.T. Crowle families, especially to all our new families. We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning together. There are also new staff members who have joined our E.T. Crowle family.

This 21st century remaking of the traditional library concept has added to the busy-ness at E.T.

For Students & Visitors & Volunteers

Whenever students enter or leave school

between 9:00 and 3:30, they must notify

the main office. This is the only way the

office knows if your child is actually here or

not.

For safety reasons, we ask that all visitors

and volunteers, whether family members

or other community members, notify the

main office when entering the school.

You will then get a “Visitor” badge to wear

while you are here.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE NOT

PERMITTED TO WANDER THROUGH THE

SCHOOL OR PORTABLES.

Trustee Message

Welcome back to another school year.

I am happy to extend a warm welcome to our returning students and families and those who are

new to our Board. I am the trustee for your child’s school and your representative on the York

Region District School Board of Trustees.

I am looking forward to continuing my work to ensure that all YRDSB students receive a high-quality

education within safe, caring and inclusive learning environments.

In the coming year, trustees will continue to focus on the priorities that we set out in our Multi-Year

Plan: student achievement and well-being, the delivery of effective and sustainable educational

programs and the responsible stewardship of Board resources.

We know that partnerships with families are essential to achieving this goal. Good schools become

better schools when they are connected to parents and families.

I hope that you will find positive and meaningful ways to engage with your child’s school over the

course of the year. There will be many events and activities to look forward to throughout the year

and many opportunities across the Region that support parent engagement.

2015-16 promises to be an exciting year.

All the best for the upcoming school year! Allan Tam, Trustee

and ET Crowle will receive 20% of the proceeds to be used towards books in the Learning Commons.

More details will come in November but for now, SAVE THE DATE!

Nut FREE School

Please be aware that some of our students and staff have severe nut allergies. In some cases, the allergy is life threatening. In order to ensure their safety, E.T. Crowle is a Peanut/Nut Free School and therefore, we request that you do not send snacks or lunches to school which contain peanut or nut products. Please note “fake peanut butter” and “fake Nutella” are not allowed at school.

If you would like to bring in birthday or holiday treats for your child`s class please be sure that they are NUT FREE. If the package does NOT state ‘Nut Free’ we cannot take a chance. Longo`s and some other stores carry ‘Nut Free’ mini cup cakes & other items. Tim Horton`s does not.

If your child has any serious allergies or medical condition that we should be aware of, please notify the office immediately.

Nutrition Break

We know how important

good nutrition is for

optimum academic

performance, thus, we

will continue to dedicate the last few

minutes before morning recess to a

structured, indoor nutrition break. We

ask that you encourage your child to

bring only nutritious snacks (e.g. fruit,

vegetables, yogurt, etc.) to enjoy at

school.

HELP PREVENT HEAD LICE! Each year cases of pediculosis (head lice) are found throughout our schools. In an effort to reduce the numbers of cases found and decrease the inconvenience to parents/guardians and students, the York Region District School Board requests your assistance. As your child is now returning to school after a long holiday, please inspect his/her hair and scalp for pediculosis. Periodic inspections during the year will help prevent the spread of head lice.

Head lice are tiny (1/8” or 3mm long) wingless insects with flattened bodies. They cling to the hair by means of six legs. They live mostly behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. The female lays tiny, yellowish-white eggs called nits. They resemble dandruff but are attached to the hair by a cement-like material and are very difficult to remove. It is usually the eggs that are noticed first.

If head lice are found, do not return your child to school until treated. This will prevent the spread of pediculosis. Children are only allowed to reenter the class when all the nits are removed from the hair, and a treatment form has been completed and signed at the school office.

For more information, please call the Public Health Nurses at York Region Health

Services Health Connection line, 1-800-363-5653, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30pm

Are you interested in attending Bill Crothers Secondary School

for the school year 2016 - 2017?

Bill Crothers Secondary School is a unique, system-wide program that provides an inclusive and engaging

learning environment for students who are motivated by healthy active living and sport while achieving academic

success. This school operates on a Balanced School Year (early August to mid-June) schedule which supports the

diverse needs of student-athletes. Specialized programming is offered to support our students through our diverse

and daily Health and Physical Education and High Performance Athlete Program with contextualized learning in a

variety of subject courses. During the school day, we offer an Integrated Learning Instructional Period (ILIP)

which provides supervised time for students to achieve their academic goals.

Information Night at: Bill Crothers Secondary School, 44 Main Street, Unionville, Ontario.

Tuesday October 13, 2015 – Students in the East Region (E T Crowle P.S.)

Information sessions will be from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in the school cafeteria.

Admission to Bill Crothers Secondary School is by application and is open to students who reside in York Region

entering grades 9, 10, 11, or 12. Students must declare the sport in which they compete at the highest level outside

of school and will not be able to compete in this sport for BCSS in the YRAA (York Region Athletic Association)

or OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association) league. Alternative competitive options are being

explored. Secondly, students who transfer in for grade 10, 11 and 12 are subject to YRAA and OFSAA transfer

rules. Please refer to the http://www.yraa.com

Due to limited space and building capacity regulations, we ask that only families with students interested in

attending BCSS for the school year 2016– 2017 attend one of these evenings. Parking is limited so we ask that

you carpool or park at the GO Station. By-law officers will enforce the parking regulations.

Applications will be available from the website on Friday October 16, 2015.

For further information, contact [email protected].

A Litterless/Waste-Free lunch contains no throwaway packaging or food leftovers. Lunches are packed in servings that will be completely eaten. To avoid any packaging, all food and drinks are packed in reusable containers with a reusable lunch bag or box. With this type of lunch, food items can be bought in larger quantities. The packaging can be left at home for reuse or recycling. Waste-free lunches are not only a wise environmental choice; they are less expensive as well.

With Boomerang Lunch programs, whatever comes to school

for lunch and snacks and is not consumed, will go back home

with your child.

Benefits of Litterless/Waste- Free Lunch Program:

● Children learn to care for the planet by reducing, reusing and/or recycling waste.

● In the absence of a green bin/ organic waste program, this is an opportunity to divert waste from landfill.

● Potential for healthier snacks (most pre-packaged, single-serving snacks and drinks contain extra salt, fat and sugars

for taste and longer shelf life).

Saves money as it is less expensive to buy food items in bulk and less food is wasted.

Additional tips from various sources:

Only pack as much food as your child will eat.

Use re-usable lunch bag/box for carrying a lunch.

Put food in reusable containers. Do not use plastic wrap, aluminum foil.

Label all containers so they have a better chance of coming home.

Use a refillable water bottle for drinks.

Use a thermos for cold drinks or hot soups.

Avoid taking plastic straws and disposable cutlery.

Put re-usable cutlery and napkins in your child’s lunch box.

Minimize the morning rush by packing lunches the night before and refrigerate over night.

Buy snacks in bulk and send in reusable containers, instead of sending individually wrapped treats.
