ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate effects of motivation on employee's performance in thebanking industry with focus to Equity Bank Limited, Kenya. The study was guided by thefollowing specific objectives, that is, to establish the effect of training and developmenton employee performance in the Equity Bank, to determine the effect of recognition andreward on employee performance in the Equity Bank, to assess the effect of workingenvironment on employee performance in the Equity Bank and to investigate the effect ofsupervisory skills of managers/supervisors on employee performance in the Equity BankThe target population of this study was top Management, middle Management, technicalstaff and subordinate staffs working in Equity bank headquarters in Nairobi. Theresearcher employed descriptive research design to analyse the data. The researcher usedstratified random sampling technique to select a sample size of 54 employees from thepopulation of 540 employees in Nairobi. The study employed questionnaires to collectprimary data. The study generated both qualitative and quantitative data wherequantitative data was coded and entered into Statistical Packages for Social Scientists(SPSS Version 17.0) and was analyzed using descriptive statistics.The study found that organization offer training and development to employees thoughthe training and development of skills in the organization was average. The study foundthat there exists favorable working condition which influences their performance whichwas effective. The study also found that reward system was supporting operation at theorganization. Further the study found that supervisors had adequate supervisory skills andthat they enhanced employees' performance to average. Based on the findings in relationto specific objective, the study concluded that organization offers training anddevelopment to employees though it was average. On working condition the studyconcluded that there exists favorable working condition which influences theirperformance. On effects of reward system and recognition programmes, the studyconcluded that reward system was supporting organization operation. On the effect ofsupervisory skills the study concluded that supervisors had adequate supervisory skillsand that they enhanced employees' performance to average.
