Abstract

Nowadays, the use of hybrid system increases and it gives more benefit to people and

nature in the cost of fuel and also in pollution. As per this concept, Trike with Hybrid

System is designed in Tadpole Style. This is not only for SAEINDIA EFFI-CYCLE

event trike but also a dream to make something better as per rulebook of Effi-Cycle

and serve to customers an efficient and comfort trike. Some innovative technologies

are used to increase rider’s experience and safety. The aim of design is to make a

better future hybrid Trike. The design is chosen to give dazzling experience to riders.

The design consideration gives a fully safe trike for riders and also to bystanders. Of

course, this trike is new for everyone but people will love it. It will become a status in

society.

1. Introduction

LUMINOUS is the team of Automobile Branch which participated in

SAEINDIA Efficycle Event of 2014. Team LUMINOUS worked on the new design

concept. As per concept of design LUMINOUS Trike gives attractive look and makes

marvelous any one. The design concept is fully dependent on Indian road condition,

which gives better experience to rider & fun on three wheels. This concept has sporty

look and also it can be ride by 2 riders with high stability and traction.

This concept use recumbent design with better comfort & stability. In India,

recumbent concept has lots of scope. Recumbent design gives many advantages than

upright bicycle. Recumbent seat reduces many health problems and useful in exercise

with low paddle force to rider.

We make vehicle concept in Tadpole design, which uses 2FW & 1RW concept with

‘Hybrid System’. Tadpole concept has many advantages which give rider full stability

and high braking force. Recumbent trikes are very well suited for long distance

touring since the comfortable rider position reduces strain to the riders’ body.

Concept of hybrid system uses Human power & Electric power alternately or

simultaneous, which also known as Eco-Friendly Concept. With use of human power

rider can charge battery and use it at any time as per rider’s requirement. With use of

electric drive, rider can easily drive their trike at gradient.

In this system GPS system, sensors, belt alarm system, app system, theft alarm

system, etc. can use. But in this concept we did not use these systems because of more

cost. But our team is able to use all new technologies or creativity as per customer

requirement with using modification in trike.

The arrangement of paddle system does with the scientific view to keep healthy the

rider. More details of advantage of tadpole, steering system, seating arrangement,

wheel base, wheel track, wheel size, suspension, drive systems, Hybrid system etc.

are given below with full specification.

2. SAEINDIA

SAEINDIA is an affiliate society of SAE International, registered as an Indian non-

profit engineering and scientific society dedicated to the advancement of mobility

community in India. As an individual member driven society of mobility practitioners,

SAEINDIA includes engineers, executives from industry, government officials,

academics and students. Principal emphasis is placed on transport industries such as

automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicles.

SAEINDIA was formed in India in 1994-95 with Dr. Pawan Goenka, appointed as

advisor for India. The SAE president held discussions with the Indian automotive

industry and as a result, the western Indian Section was established. This event

provides a real world engineering challenge for the SAEINDIA student member that

reflects the steps involved in the entire process from design and engineering to

production to marketing and endurance.

Student Competitions

SAEINDIA holds a variety of competitions every year for engineering students across

the country.

1. SUPRA SAEINDIA

2. BAJA SAEINDIA (eBAJA from 2014)

3. Effi-Cycle

Efficycle is the event which organized by SAEINDIA. Efficycle is an intercollegiate

design competition for undergraduate and graduate engineering students where teams

have to design and fabricate an Energy Efficient Hybrid-Human Powered –three

wheeled-electric vehicle.

The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for engineering students by

setting up a trend of using eco-friendly vehicles in India and come up with some

innovative design. Main concept of this event is that the students have to tackle real

world engineering problems, work in multidisciplinary teams, practice design for

manufacturability and manage full product development cycle life.

Effi-Cycle gives lots of scope to the Engineering student while their study to think

creative, make creative and to drive the future. This concept also uses ‘Hybrid

System’, which is also useful in automotive industries. Due to global warming effect,

this green vehicle is very helpful to reduce the pollution on earth.

5. About Event

Virtual Round

SAEINDIA organizes the event of Efficycle every year. Every year around 200 teams

participated in the Efficycle Event. Every year number of team increases for virtual

round. But only limited teams are chosen through virtual round for main round.

In 2014, 225 teams participated in Event. But only 90 teams were selected for the

main round through the designing round. As per the distribution of zone, teams have

to face presentation round/virtual round/designing round on respected zone.

Presentation of design were given by 145 teams at KIET, Ghaziabad on 21st-22

nd June

and remaining teams gave their presentation to RIT, Chennai on 28th

-29th

June.

Only 90 teams were selected for main round. The result was declared on 10th

July.

Only 3 teams of Gujarat were shortlisted from 8 teams and it’s very proud for us that

only one Government Engineering College was selected.

A new image has been made by the students of Government Engineering College,

Modasa at national level in Society of Automotive Engineers.

Main Round

Mostly main event is organized at UIET, Chandigarh (Punjab University). This year,

with great arrangement the event was started on 9th

October.

On the 1st day of event, registration of vehicle and accommodation was provided.

From 1 PM, Technical Inspection was started. On 2nd

day, static event was done by

Technical Inspector.

On 1st Day, Inauguration ceremony was organized. Great speeches were given by Effi-

Cycle Committee members and then party was arranged for the participants at

evening.

Page 10: EffiCycle report_LUMINIOUS_2014

10

In Technical Inspection, following points were checked.

1. Rulebook/safety check

2. Figure of 8 test

3. Brake test

Only 55 teams cleared Technical Inspection and took part in static event.

Static event consists following rounds.

1. Design Evaluation

2. Innovation Evaluation

3. Cost Evaluation

4. Marketing Presentation

5. Weight Management

After completing the static event, all teams gave their dynamic tests as follows.

1. Acceleration Test

2. Gradient Test

3. Maneuverability Test

4. Utility Test

5. Endurance Test

On 2nd

and 3rd

Day, Dynamic test was done as per schedule. Then Endurance test was

arranged on last day of event (12th

Oct). Only 55 teams were participated in the

Endurance test. Team LUMINOUS got 33rd

position on Endurance test. Endurance

track was a closed circuit including lot of turns, bends, gradients and various kinds of

obstacles. Total length of circuit was around 2km. Drivers must run vehicle for 2

hours without stopping. Max. Laps were counted and result was declared at

Valedictory Ceremony.

On 16th

October, Final result was declared and Team LUMINOUS got 17th

rank

in India.
