    Members o the Sac (Sauk) and Fox tribes, French explorers,monks,andmissionariesrstarrivedintheDesMoinesareaintheearly1800s.Whilesomeotherstnon-IndiansettlersoDesMoinesweremilitaryregimentsandtheiramilies(manyoriginally romNew England), those who contributed to thecitysgrowthduringthesecondhalothenineteenthcenturyincludedpeopleromtheuplandSouthviaMissouriaswellasGermans,AricanAmericans,Norwegians,Swedes,Danes,andCzechs(knownthenasBohemians).Russians,Mexicans,Greeks,GermanandthenEasternEuropeanJewsarrivedinthelatenine-teenthandearlytwentiethcenturies.Manyotheseimmigrants

    cametotheregiontoworkincoalminesandinmeatpackingplants,thoughbythe1920s,miningwasindecline.

    During the middle years o the twentieth century, DesMoinesspopulationgrowthcameromemploymentin thein-suranceandservicesectorsandnotromanyoneethnicgroup.In the last quarter o the twentieth century,DesMoines haswelcomed SoutheastAsians (primarilyai Dam,Vietnamese,Lowland Lao as well as Cambodians and Hmong),Chinese,Tai, aiwanese, Korean, and Filipino, Asian Indians, Paki-stanis, and an increasedLatino (largelyMexican)population.Bosnians,Nuer, and Somalicamein the1990s, and,most re-
