Axelrod broke his maiden for a $50,000 tag at Del Mar last

August, but he had steadily improved and climbed the class

ladder from there. That ascent culminated in a 12-1 upset in this

lucrative event under the Indiana Grand lights Saturday night.

Fourth off his graduation score in the Oak Tree Juvenile at

Pleasanton in September, Axelrod his the bench after a

starter/optional claimer at Santa Anita the following month. He

resurfaced down the hill there Apr. 6, finishing a very close third

before checking in fourth--again not far from a victory--under

identical conditions May 17. Cont. p6

Indiana Derby cont.

The Florida-bred returned to dirt and a route in the GIII

Affirmed S. June 10, and outran his 23-1 odds to be second

behind Saturday’s GIII Los Alamitos Derby runner-up Draft Pick.

Squeezed out at the start and back to third last while saving all

the ground early, Axelrod sat in a joint last down the backside as

Trigger Warning showed the way. The pacesetter threatened to

run away from them as he opened up through six furlongs in

1:11.52, but Axelrod made a big move to slingshot past foes

heading for home. He sliced through a seam inside of favored

King Zachary (Curlin) at the head of the stretch, and kicked on

resolutely to make it just in time.

“I thought he broke sharp. It looked like there was plenty of

pace up in front of him,” said winning trainer Mike McCarthy,

who had stayed back home in California to attend his 7-year-old

daughter’s swim meet. “I saw the opening quarter in :23 2/5.

Florent [Geroux] seemed to be fairly content with his position.

Turning up the backside, he was able to save some ground.

Coming to the three-eighths pole, it didn’t look like anyone was

really running away from him. He was able to maintain his

position. Obviously, when Florent wheeled him outside around

the turn and switched leads and kind of started picking off

horses at the quarter pole, I thought he was liable to go ahead

and get a check. And then coming to the eighth pole, it looked to

me like he was able to find that extra gear and get his nose

down at the wire--and I couldn’t be happier. I’m very happy for

the horse, very happy for my whole team and very thankful that

Florent rode him with some confidence, and that made all the

difference for us.”

King Zachary, a seemingly breakout winner of the GIII Matt

Winn S. last out, seemed to be run off his feet early and couldn’t

muster enough late.

“He broke good,” said rider Robby Albarado. “I shoved on him

to get him some position there. It seemed like it was conducive

to speed all day. I didn’t think they went overly quick, but I

caught myself kind of chasing a little bit up the backside just

trying to keep him in the race. He felt great physically. By all

means, I didn’t lose any confidence. I do believe he’s a top

horse. I’m going to stick with that and hope they continue on the

plan to go after the big fish with him, because he’s a big horse. I

think when you see him go a mile and an eighth, a mile and a

quarter, you’ll see him start to spread himself out a little bit.”

Pedigree Notes:

Axelrod was the third U.S. graded winner Saturday by

Medaglia d’Oro or a son of Medaglia d’Oro, following a win by

Elate (Medaglia d’Oro) in the GII Delaware H. earlier in the day

and a convincing tally by Talk Veuve to Me (Violence) in the GIII

Indiana Oaks one race earlier. Figarella’s Queen (Medaglia

d’Oro) was second in the Oaks. Axelrod has a Kantharos half-

brother who was a $65,000 OBS Winter Mixed short yearling

earlier this year and a foal half-sister by Overanalyze.

Golden Brown had only been on the grass once before--when

second in the Dan Horn S. for New Jersey-breds last out June 17-

-but that didn’t stop him from kicking away and pulling off the

double-digit upset here. A third-out graduate sprinting in the

Parx slop Feb. 24, he was fourth first off the bench back in

state-bred company May 5 and wheeled back in three weeks to

get a narrow win in a similar restricted spot. He was 16-1 in the

Dan Horn, and sported just two very slow breezes in the interim.

Tugging his way up to sit second in the two path into the first

turn, Golden Brown dropped out a bit down the backside and

was fifth in between foes as they spun for home. Shifted outside

for clear sailing, he leveled off powerfully once his feet were

completely under him and kicked away decisively.

It was a trouble-filled stretch run for some of the Kent

also-rans–namely favored Untamed Domain (Animal Kingdom),

who bounced off of Hot Springs and into the rail. In a somewhat

surprising decision, the stewards ruled that pacesetting

Archaggelos (Temple City) had caused the chain reaction, and he

was taken down and put behind Untamed Domain.

“His last race–even though it was in Jersey-bredcompany–came against an older horse and Jersey-bredchampion [in GSW Irish Strait {English Channel}],” noted winningconditioner Pat McBurney when asked of the decision to try thistougher spot with Golden Brown. “We figured if we couldrepeat that race, we might get a piece of it. It worked outtoday.”

Second in two tough spots in her last two outings, ‘TDN Rising

Star’ Talk Veuve to Me made the grade Saturday night as an

overwhelming favorite. Away without incident, the dark bay

chased in second under a firm hold through splits of :23.17 and

:46.66. She took over with total ease midway on the bend, and

rider Julien Leparoux hadn’t moved a muscle as they

straightened. Figarella’s Queen looked for a brief second like she

might make the favorite work for it, but Talk Veuve to Me hit

another gear when called upon and she cruised away to score as

she pleased while wrapped up late.

“I’ve been watching her races--she’s got that tactical speed,”

said Julien Leparoux, who was partnering with Talk Veuve to Me

for the first time. “[Molecules] wanted to be on the lead, but

[Talk Veuve to Me] relaxed beautifully off of [that one]. She’s

push button. On the second turn, I just let her go on her own. I

didn’t really ask her. She went to the lead and relaxed again and

went on in the straight again. She’s a very nice filly.”

Second behind Harbor Lights (Shackleford) in her Ellis unveiling

some 11 months ago, Talk Veuve to Me resurfaced at Fair

Grounds Mar. 25 to romp by 11 1/4 lengths ahead of two next-

out graduates including now two-for-three stablemate

Abounding Joy (Quality Road). Team Valor International bought

in off of that race, and the investment looked a promising one

when the she completed the exacta in the GII Eight Belles S.

May 4. She was second last time in the GI Acorn S. June 9 behind

GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Monomoy Girl (Tapizar), and was

testing two turns for the first time here.

“She showed what I was expecting her to show,” said trainerand co-owner Brisset. “It was maybe a little quicker than what Iwas thinking on paper. But she took the lead pretty easy. Youcould see that she was looking around a lot, just went to thewire cruising.” He continued, “She’s very unlucky being born in one of thebest years--how many good fillies do we have this year, between Monomoy Girl, Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) andRed Ruby (Tiznow) and I’m sure I’ve left out some. It’s a very, very strong year for 3-year-old fillies. I don’t know whereeverybody wants to go. She may have to face them and turn thetable on some to be in the top three. But we are what we are.”

Pedigree Notes: Talk Veuve to Me is the seventh stakes winner and secondgraded winner for her second-crop sire (by Medaglia d’Oro). Herdam, a full-sister to SW and MGSP Winning Point, sold for$40,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November sale with the winnerin utero. She sold a year later to Korea Bloodstock for just $1500in foal to Shackleford.

GUNNEVERA GEARING UP FOR RETURN MGSW Gunnevera (Dialed In) fired a five-furlong bullet in 1:00 flat (1/16) at Gulfstream Park West Saturday morning as heprepares for a first start since exiting an eighth-place finish inthe Mar. 31 GI Dubai World Cup with a hoof injury. “The horseworked very well,” trainer Antonio Sano said. “He went :23, :36,:48 1/5, and five furlongs in a minute flat.” The near $3-millionearner had been freshened in Ocala for two months beforereturning to Sano’s stable. Saturday’s spin was his fourth sincegetting back into serious training. Gunnevera is expected to usea race at Gulfstream some time next month as a springboard tothe Sept. 1 GI Woodward S. at Saratoga. A graded winner at twoand three, Gunnevera was second in last year’s GI Travers S. andthird in the lucrative GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. thisJanuary. “I’ve never had a horse like him before in my life,” saidSano. “I don’t have the words to say how great Gunnevera hasbeen for me and my family. I am very proud of what he hasaccomplished. To run in the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders’ Cup,the Pegasus and then Dubai, it’s been amazing.”

Assuming his customary position at the head of affairs early,

Voodoo Song recorded his seventh lifetime tally in Saturday’s

Forbidden Apple S. Easily assuming the lead after fellow

speedster Blind Ambition (Tapit) stumbled significantly at the

start, Voodoo Song carved out honest splits as the Todd Pletcher

runner tried to overcome his unfortunate beginning. In the

meantime, favored GSW Disco Partner (Disco Rico) was

comfortably back in third, about three lengths behind the

frontrunners. Voodoo Song shook clear of the tiring Blind

Ambition turning for home while Disco Partner loomed but

failed to close on the outside in the stretch as the Chad Brown

pair of Projected and Offering Plan closed steadily from the far

outside. In the late stages, Voodoo Song kept up the tempo and

had enough left in reserve to fend off Projected and Offering

Plan. Disco Partner was fifth and Blind Ambition checked home

sixth.

“The plan was to let him do what he wanted to do,” said

winning rider Manny Franco. “He went to the lead. I tried to

slow him down a little bit and he did, it worked out. The last

time, he went a little [fast], I figured this time if I went around

:46 [seconds], that was my goal. He is game all the time. He

always keeps trying. He gave me all he had.”

Added winning trainer Linda Rice, “He was coming into this

race really well and I wanted to run him. On paper there were

three speeds in the race and you would think it was going to set

up for a closer like Disco Partner, but fortunately it worked out.

He was able to get on the lead and settle. As a 4-year-old he's

really matured. Last year, running from the dirt and switching to

turf he was really rank and running at two-turns has really

benefitted him. Going forward, we'll certainly take the [GI]

Fourstardave [Aug. 11] into consideration. Also the West Point

[S. Aug. 24]."

Mystic Chant, a half-sister to stakes winner and graded-placed

Mystic Soul (Bahri), is represented by a pair of colts, juvenile

Worth a Shot (English Channel) and a yearling by Japan. The

stakes-winning mare foaled a filly by Flatter early this season.

Favored at 45 cents onthe dollar to take this next step, La Fuerza was off far betterthan he was in his bow and took up a spot from fourth behind atrio of front-runners. Idling a bit on the turn, he felt a crack ofManny Franco's whip nearing the stretch, switched out andaround first-time starter Red Zinger (Will Take Charge) at thetop of the lane and kicked it in from the eighth pole to score bya handy four lengths. Bustin Mach Four (Bustin Stones)outfinished Red Zinger for second. The 46th black-type winnerfor his Claiborne-based sire, La Fuerza is out of a half-sister toSW & GISP Pinch Pie (Victory Gallop) and hails from the family ofGI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Volponi (Cryptoclearance). LaFuerza is kin to a colt foal of this year by Mizzen Mast. "I thought he broke well,” said Byron Hughes, assistant totrainer Todd Pletcher. “There was a little more speed in the racethan we expected. They kind of went ahead of him and he wasdown there on the inside on the rail. Manny did a good jobbeing patient and when the outside opened up, he veered himthere and he kicked on in the stretch. It was a good race for him.Coming into today, we were hoping he would break a littlebetter. He broke a little slow and got pinched his first start and itturned out to be okay. In similar fashion, here he ended upgetting behind horses but handled taking the dirt well and wasable to get up." Cont. p3

Prince of Hempt quietly went unbeaten in 2017, with two

scores over an extended mile at Parx before cutting back to

seven-eighths to post a mild 5-1 upset in Laurel’s City of Light S.

in November. He found some trouble when a comebacking

fourth two-turning in Parx allowance company June 30, but had

his supporters in his return to stakes competition. Trapped out

four deep into the first turn, Prince of Hempt settled in the three

path on the backstretch run and made a bold bid to lead with a

quarter mile to travel. Monongahela came with a rush from the

tail of the field and shot right past Prince of Hempt at the three-

sixteenths, but he could not sustain the run and Prince of Hempt

fought back gamely underneath him for the victory. A half-

brother to a yearling Revolutionary filly, the winner is also kin to

a filly of this year by Momba (Maria’s Mon). Prince of Hempt’s

third dam is Richard Golden’s ultra-classy Grade I-winning turf

mare Tenski (Polish Numbers). Click for the Equibase.com chart

EPPING FOREST (f, 4, Exchange Rate--Andraste, by Pulpit) was

on the board in five of seven starts last term, including a win

over this course and trip Oct. 14. Shelved for the remainder of

the year, she returned with a fifth in a $62,500 optional claimer

at Aqueduct Apr. 6, but rebounded to score while returning

under similar conditions to Belmont June 3. Sent off the 9-5

slight second choice here, Epping Forest stalked the early pace

in fourth behind favorite Malibu Stacy (Tizway) through early

splits of :21.68 and :44 flat. Swung wide for the stretch drive,

WICKED STORM (f, 3, Stormy Atlantic--Wicked Delight, by

Carson City) completed the trifecta in her first two attempts in

restricted company at Santa Anita Jan. 11 and Feb. 4,

respectively. Subsequently shelved, she wired the field in her

return over the Golden Gate synthetic June 9 and was given a

9-2 chance in this return to the dirt. Stumbling at the start, she

quickly got her hooves beneath her, avoiding trouble as her

outside neighbor veered in at the break, and moved up to stalk

from second through swift opening fractions of :21.89 and

:45.07. Overtaking the leader in early stretch, the chestnut easily

extended clear under a hand ride from Rafael Bejarano to win as

TERM OF ART (c, 4, Tiznow--Miles of Style, by Storm Cat),

winner of the GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. at Del Mar in 2016, finished

third in a pair of Santa Anita stakes--the GII San Felipe S. and GIII

Affirmed S.--last season before concluding an otherwise modest

campaign with a lackluster ninth in the GI Pennsylvania Derby at

Parx in September. Off for the remainder of the season, the

$220,000 KEESEP yearling was given a 5-2 chance for his 2018

debut. Settled in a stalking position behind modest early splits,

the powerful bay took aim three wide approaching the quarter

pole, drove to the front midstretch and drew clear en route to a

1 3/4-length score over favored South Beach (Tapit). Term of

Art’s dam Miles of Style, who is out of dual Grade I winning

Tomisue’s Delight (A.P. Indy), is a half-sister to Grade I scorer

Mr. Sidney (Storm Cat). The 11-year-old mare, who has a 3-year-

FLAG TAKES FLIGHTIN JULY CUP

Aidan O’Brien’s relatively quiet week at Newmarket suddenly

burst into life where it really mattered on Saturday as U S Navy

Flag (War Front) made all to capture the festival’s feature

G1 Darley July Cup. Positively ridden as usual by Ryan Moore,

the 8-1 shot who had completed the rare Middle Park-Dewhurst

double on the Rowley Mile here in the autumn but who was

saying goodbye to a mile after his ninth in the G1 St James’s

Palace S. at the Royal meeting, was given most to think about by

Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) inside the final furlong. Drawing on

the inherent valour he possesses and stamina that had seen him

finish second in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, he pulled away to

win by 1 3/4 lengths as stablemate Fleet Review (War Front)

grabbed third, a further 3/4 of a length away. The 5-2 favourite

Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal) looked a dubious stayer in seventh.

“What threw us was he was able to win a Dewhurst making

the running and nearly got the trip in an Irish Guineas, so we

had to go a mile [in the St James’s Palace] at Ascot,” Aidan

O’Brien explained. “Ryan looked after him there, but he’d had

tough races and we were afraid that they had left a mark. He’s a

very good horse to come back from a tough campaign like that

as a 3-year-old. The plan was to rest him after this and train him

for The Everest. In all fairness to him, he deserves a rest.”

U S Navy Flag is in the mould of the stable’s previous 3-year-

old winners of this contest, Stravinsky and Mozart (Ire) who

were also coming back from a mile when victorious in 1999 and

2001. Like the latter, he was caught late on in the Irish Guineas

when asked to make all over The Curragh’s demanding mile

May 25 but connections had opted to go again for conclusive

proof in the St James’s Palace on June 19. They got that as he

faded out of the race, having set a formidable tempo, and in

many ways this was just a belated return to his optimum a year

on from his first demonstration of his inherent ability when

second in the

G2 July S. at this meeting. Also fifth when stumbling on the bend

in a dramatic renewal of the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains at

ParisLongchamp on May 13, the bay is now firmly set to

navigate the world’s top sprints.

Aidan O’Brien, who was also close-up fifth with the patiently-

ridden Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy), was full of praise for the

winner’s temperament as well as class. “It was unbelievable for

him to do that, as to nearly make all at The Curragh you have to

nearly be a nine- or ten-furlong horse, but he has a very strong

mind and it was obviously courage that got him to where he was

in the Irish Guineas,” he said. “He was a little bit on the bridle at

Ascot, so we had to give him a chance here and he got into a

lovely rhythm here.” Cont. p2

U S Navy Flag and groom David Hickey after

the July Cup | racingfotos.com

Flag Takes Flight In July Cup cont. from p1

He is out of a Galileo mare and with any horse that has that

Galileo in them, they flatten down on the ground when you go

after them--their stride doesn’t shorten and they keep going. He

has loads of speed and is able to drag horses. Physically he’s not

very high, but he has length and has a well-balanced blend of

War Front and Galileo in his pedigree. He had a gruelling season

at two and even ran on the dirt then, but came back smiling

after dancing every dance. For a horse to take that much

hardship and come back is rare, but he obviously has an

unbelievable constitution.”

With regards to his tilt at the Oct. 13 A$13-million Randwick

bonanza, he added, “The weight-for-age is probably a bit wrong

in both hemispheres and this horse will probably be a bit wrong

when he goes down there, so that’s something to look at in the

future. Australia is a young, progressive racing country and the

racing is getting very strong and competitive down there, so

we’re really looking forward to it.”

Sioux Nation, who had the winner behind in last year’s

G1 Phoenix S., is staying closer to home after his encouraging

effort. “He’s very fast and is probably a five-furlong horse, but as

he’s a big horse who has taken time to get fit the plan was to let

him run here and then go back [to five] for the [G1] Nunthorpe

[at York on Aug. 24]. We don’t think we’ll see the best of him

until he goes back.”

Blue Point was unable to become the first to complete the

King’s Stand S.-July Cup double since Never So Bold (Ire) in 1985

and trainer Charlie Appleby is looking at returning to five

furlongs now. “William said he over-raced and was keen enough

for the first two [furlongs],” he commented. “We were obviously

disappointed, but we’ll drop him to five and go for the

Nunthorpe and [the Sept. 16 G1] Flying Five at The Curragh and

then head back to Ascot for the [Oct. 20 G1] British Champions

Sprint. As William [Buick] just said, for whatever reason this

horse turns up at [Royal] Ascot--that’s his gig and he seems to

like it there.”

Brando was placing in this for the second consecutive year and

seemed to be disadvantaged by having to race towards the

stand’s rail with all the action away from him. Tracking the

again-disappointing Australian challenger Redkirk Warrior (GB)

(Notnowcato {GB}) only took him so far and jockey Tom Eaves

was rueing his fortune. “He’s run a blinder and we’re very happy

with him, but as it turns out we were probably drawn on the

wrong side,” he said. “I thought I had the winner going to the

furlong pole, but all credit to him as he pulled out more.”

Pedigree Notes... U S Navy Flag’s dam Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was a

leading performer for this stable, taking the G1 Moyglare Stud S.

and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at two and the G1 Irish 1000

Guineas and G1 Pretty Polly S. the following season. Her first

foal Cover Song, a daughter of Fastnet Rock (Aus), took the GIII

Autumn Miss S. before her attentions were turned towards War

Front. Her first produce by that sire was in her mould. Roly Poly

proved as tough, genuine and consistent a performer as she had

been and her unflinching travails last season earned her

victories in the G1 Sun Chariot S. and G1 Falmouth S. before U S

Navy Flag came along to trump her. The unraced second dam

Butterfly Cove produced another Marcel Boussac heroine in

Misty For Me’s sister Ballydoyle (Ire), who was also third in the

G1 1000 Guineas, and another full-sibling of merit in the SW and

MGSP Twirl (Ire). Butterfly Cove is a full-sister to the G3 1000

Guineas Trial S. winner Kamarinskaya and a half to the

G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Prix Morny-winning champion juvenile

Fasliyev from the family of the MGISW sires Desert Wine and

Kew Gardens and Ryan Moore | Racing Post

MIDSUMMER BLOOM Aidan O’Brien had spoken at Newmarket on Saturday

afternoon of his stable’s regime slipping into place and a few

hours after U S Navy Flag (War Front) conquered there it was

the re-energised Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who delivered

a Group 1 double to Ballydoyle in

ways, this colt is the epitome of

how dramatic a turnaround his

trainer can generate in one of his

lethargic and at worst dismal on

his first three starts this term

which included a 27-length

Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}) in

Newmarket’s Listed Zetland S. in

October as he dominated the 14-furlong G2 Queen’s Vase at

Royal Ascot June 20 and hold-up tactics were employed once

again here as he was served up another relentless gallop by

stablemate Nelson (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

Ryan Moore covered the move of Neufbosc (Fr)

(Mastercraftsman {Ire}) passing the two-furlong pole and under

driving the 7-5 favourite began to edge ahead of that leading

domestic hope and on to an ultimately authoritative

1 1/4-length success. The G1 Epsom Derby runner-up Dee Ex

Bee was eventually three

lengths away in third, after

another workmanlike effort

which may be down to the

summer ground.

Breaking his maiden on soft

ground at Killarney in August,

Kew Gardens was second to

Nelson in the G3 Golden Fleece

S. on Irish Champions Day at

Leopardstown and fourth to

Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep

Impact {Jpn}) in the

G2 Beresford S. at Naas in

September prior to his tour de

force in the Zetland over 10

furlongs at Newmarket the next month. His comeback effort

when third in the nine-furlong Listed Feilden S. back at the latter

venue on Apr. 17 suggested he was some way off a peak and

Page 31: ELATE OUTCLASSES ‘EM ‘RISING STAR’ RELISHES TWO TURNS IN ... · Elate is the second Medaglia d’Oro-sired 4-year-old filly in as many years to take the Delaware H.--champion

while he was initially sluggish and eventually well beaten into

second by Knight To Behold (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the

Listed Lingfield Derby Trial over an extended 11 furlongs on May

12, it transpired after that he had lost a shoe there and he

received a favourable mention from Michael Tabor in pre-Derby

discussions. His run in the blue riband was characterised by

aggressive early tactics and it may be a combination of that and

his dislike of undulating tracks that saw him trail in ninth, but

when this stable’s runners go out of TV shot in that race it

almost means nothing as he proved in the Queen’s Vase just

days later.

With Dee Ex Bee lifeless on ground that was probably too

quick and Nelson being sacrificed for the winner, this renewal

may not be worth taking too seriously but Kew Gardens is a colt

on the upgrade now and his trainer is looking to put a cat among

the older pigeons in the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S.

in a fortnight. “We came here to see if he could go on to the

King George,” O’Brien explained. “That was the idea. Royal

Ascot first, then back over a mile and a half in the Grand Prix de

Paris and then the King George according to this result. Ryan

took his time and Kew Gardens is a beautiful colt who moves

very well and needs good ground. That’s why Ascot could be for

him. He’s easy to ride, he’s good in his head and he stayed 14

furlongs at Royal Ascot.”

Neufbosc’s trainer Pia Brandt is thinking of longer-term targets

for the runner-up and said, “I am very proud of my colt. He gave

everything today--I thought he could pull it off, but I can’t say I

am disappointed because he tried his best. He will now be

aimed at the [Sept. 16 G2] Prix Niel on his way to the [Oct. 7 G1]

Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.”

Pedigree Notes... Kew Gardens has now joined his dam in the Group 1-winning

club, with Chelsea Rose (Ire) (Desert King {Ire}) having proven

more precocious in gaining her top-level success in the G1

Moyglare Stud S. From the family of the G2 Prix Eugene Adam

winner and GI San Juan Capistrano Invitational H. runner-up

River Warden (Riverman) and the GIII Hoist the Flag S. scorer

Sweettuc (Spectacular Bid), her other two black-type performers

include the speedy G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis winner and G1 Prix

Maurice de Gheest third Thawaany (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). She

also has a 2-year-old full-brother and yearling full-sister to the

winner to come. Click for the free Equineline.com catalogue-

ENCORE, MARMELO! One of those older horses in love with the French way of

things, Marmelo (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) notched up

another win in a gallic race of prestige when surviving an inquiry

after Saturday’s G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil at ParisLongchamp.

Again paired with Christophe Soumillon as he had been when

successful in last year’s G3 Prix de Barbeville and G2 Prix

Kergorlay, the 9-10 favourite tracked the pace in second

throughout before committing with 300 metres to race.

Jinking across the path of compatriot Algometer (GB)

(Archipenko) soon after and causing the interference which

prompted the officials’ investigation, the bay stayed on to score

by 3/4 of a length and had sufficient dominion at the line to be

allowed to keep it. The winner is yet another with G1

Melbourne Cup pretensions, having already been there when

ninth in November. “He obviously loves racing in France, but he

is still entire so we must try and upgrade his profile in England,”

the winning syndicate’s Edward Goodwin said. “The Melbourne

Cup definitely remains his target. Last year he ran twice in

Australia and we won’t make the same mistake again, so he’ll

just run straight there. He could run again beforehand, maybe in

the [G2 Prix] Kergorlay [at Deauville on Aug. 19 or the Ebor [H.

at York on Aug. 25].”

Marmelo, whose Prix de Barbeville win came in track record

time at Chantilly last April before finishing second to Talismanic

(GB) (Medaglia d’Oro) in this race staged at Saint-Cloud 12

months ago, had been committed to a Melbourne Cup challenge

after his defeat of the subsequent G2 Doncaster Cup hero

Desert Skyline (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) in Deauville’s Kergorlay. On

the face of it, his effort when dead-heating for sixth in the 12-

furlong G1 Caulfield Cup looked an ideal warm-up for the “race

that stops a nation”, but it proved counter-productive as he ran

flat as the 6-1 joint-favourite in the main event. Second to

Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) in this track’s G2 Prix Vicomtesse

Vigier on May 27 before beating the progressive Juddmonte

stayer Weekender (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in York’s Listed Grand Cup

over nearly 14 furlongs last time on June 16, Marmelo will again

figure as one of the main protagonists for the Australian

showcase after proving his wellbeing in this race in which last

year’s G1 Prix Royal-Oak winner Ice Breeze (GB) (Nayef) was all

but pulled up.

DUBAWI II Backed with conviction for Saturday’s G2 bet365 Superlative S.

at Newmarket, Godolphin’s ‘TDN Rising Star’ Quorto (Ire)

(Dubawi {Ire}) gave his supporters few concerns as he emerged

clear best in this important juvenile staging post. Showing dash

to win a six-furlong novice stakes here on debut on June 22, the

son of the dual Oaks-placed Volume (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB})

was always going to be stronger over this extra furlong and was

duly sent off the 5-4 favourite with punters uninterested in

anything else. Racing enthusiastically in the hands of William

Buick as Cape of Good Hope (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) led at a

steadily-increasing tempo, the handsome bay initially followed

Blown By Wind (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) away from that

full-brother to Highland Reel (Ire) but his rider was forced to

angle him over as his lead began to flounder. Phoenix

Thoroughbred Limited’s Neverland Rock (GB) (No Nay Never)

loomed to Ballydoyle’s representative against the stand’s rail

with just over a furlong remaining, but Quorto was on both their

cases and quickly had their measure. Despite not looking

entirely comfortable on the fast ground, he stayed on to register

a 3 3/4-length success from Cape of Good Hope and provide a

passable impression of his sire who took off for the first time in

this race in 2004. “He really impressed me there and has done

everything right,” Buick said. “He’s very natural and it was lovely

the way he did that today. He was green, but travelled so well

and ideally I’d have liked to have something to follow for a bit

longer. He has plenty of speed, so he doesn’t need to go any

further for now and he’ll make into a lovely 3-year-old as well.”

Trainer Charlie Appleby has another strong team of juveniles

and can dream of the 2019 Classics now. “We were confident

coming here today that he had come forward and that the step

up in trip was going to suit,” he said. “He has shown some gears

there. William got off and said he has a great racing mind. He

travels very sweetly in your hands and he picked up well when

he hit the rising ground. He is an exciting horse, for sure. Being

by Dubawi one would hope we will see a bit more improvement,

with a bit of luck. I would say the [G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien]

National S. [at The Curragh on Sept. 16] is the more likely target.

Seven looks to be his trip, but hopefully further down the line a

mile will be for him.” Aidan O’Brien said of Cape of Good Hope,

“He ran a lovely race and we couldn’t be happier. We are going

gently with him and you can see that with every run he is getting

a bit better. I think he is still a baby, so he is progressing.

Physically he is strong, but mentally he is still a baby. I don’t

think a mile will be a problem when that time comes, but we’ve

plenty of time for that and we don’t need to go there yet.”

Pedigree Notes... Quorto, who was the first juvenile by his sire to win in 2018, is

the only foal so far out of the Luca Cumani-trained Volume who

captured the Listed Swettenham Stud Fillies Trial S. before filling

third spot in the G1 English and Irish Oaks in 2014. Stamina for

beyond a mile is assured, with her second dam being Victoire

Bleue (GB) (Legend of France), heroine of the 2 1/2-mile G1 Prix

du Cadran who later produced the G2 Prix Hubert de Chaudenay

and G3 Prix du Lys winner and G1 St Leger runner-up Vertical

BEATING THE TREND Out of luck on his three previous visits to Ascot when

contesting straight-track events, King Power Racing’s Beat the

Bank (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}) enjoyed better fortunes on the round

course on Saturday when swooping late to win the G2 Fred

Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile. Compromised by traffic

problems when under two-lengths sixth in the Royal meeting’s

G1 Queen Anne S. on June 19, the bay who had also been 10th

in both the G3 Jersey S. and G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. here last

term was settled behind the leading duo early. Benefiting from

the strong pace, the 11-4 favourite took time to pick up in the

straight and was momentarily denied a clear run again as

Eminent (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) checked out to his left. When out of

trouble, he was able to grind down the David O’Meara pair Lord

Glitters (Fr) (Whipper) and Suedois (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) in the

final yards and prevail by a neck and a nose. “I’m a huge fan of

his--he’s not a very big horse and doesn’t work like an

impressive one, but he has a huge heart and is special,” jockey

Oisin Murphy said.

Finally dropping his Ascot voodoo was important with so many

feature mile contests staged in Berkshire, but Andrew Balding

was always convinced that there had been extenuating

circumstances for his flops here. In between last year’s Royal

meeting and Champions Day, he had won the Listed Sir Henry

Cecil S., G3 Thoroughbred S. and G2 Joel S. by a cumulative

margin of 11 lengths and had gone to post for the QEII as short

as 4-1.

DYLAN’S CUP DREAM IS STILL ALIVE Much water has flowed under the bridge since Dylan Mouth

(Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) took the 2014 G1 Derby Italiano, but

Earle Mack’s veteran proved on Saturday that he is still able to

pull a rabbit out of the hat as he battled to success in York’s

G3 John Smith’s Silver Cup. Whether this and other races in this

staying category actually warrant their new upgrades by the

European Pattern Committee is a matter for debate, but it at

least provided a feast for the eyes with the first three fighting in

a line throughout the dying yards. In the end, it was the 8-1 shot

who gave marginally more than last year’s winner Dal Harraild

(GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) to score by a neck, with Scotland

(Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) 3/4 of a length away in third. “He’s been a

great horse for the family,” trainer Marco Botti said. “He won

Group 1 races in Italy for my brother [Stefano] before he joined

us. It was the owner’s dream last year to run him in the

Melbourne Cup. He needed to win today to go up enough in the

handicap and it will now be strongly considered.”

Dylan Mouth, whose exploits in his native Italy included

successes in the G1 Gran Premio di Milano, G1 Premio Roma

and G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club as well as the Derby, had

been 25-1 when taking Haydock’s Old Newton Cup H. with real

authority last July. With a tendency to be an in-and-out

performer, the bay came here on the back of a second in the 12-

furlong Listed Fred Archer S. at Newmarket on June 30 but

punters were reluctant to put full faith in him. Brought from rear

with perfect timing by Dane O’Neill to gather in Dal Harraild

inside the last furlong, he was in determined mood this time as

the race to Flemington gathers pace.

Pedigree Notes... The first foal out of the G3 Premio Verziere winner

Cottonmouth (Ire) (Noverre), Dylan Mouth is a half-brother to

the listed-placed Per Un Dixir (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})

and Henry Mouth (Ire) (Henrythenavigator), who like him was

successful in the G2 Gran Premio d’Italia but only second in the

G2 Derby Italiano. The dam’s 2-year-old filly by Lope de Vega

(Ire) named Poetic Legacy (Ire) was bought by Ballyhane Stud for

€70,000 at Goffs November, while her yearling son of Kodiac

(GB) fetched €72,000 when purchased by Azienda Agricola

Mariano Spa at the most recent edition of that auction. Click for

LOUIS IN WORLD CUP WARM-UP Sunday’s action is low-key in Europe and Maisons-Laffitte

starts early with France in the World Cup Final in the afternoon.

Centre stage is occupied by the G2 Prix Eugene Adam, or Grand

Prix de Maisons-Laffitte, where the G1 Prix du Jockey Club third

Louis D’Or (Ire) (Intello {Ger}) bids to become the fourth group

winner to emerge from that 10 1/2-furlong Chantilly Classic on

June 3. Interestingly, Khalid Abdullah has shown a preference

for this race which he has won five times and it is worth noting

that the Juddmonte silks are carried this time by the June 21 G3

Hampton Court S. runner-up Crossed Baton (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

In the G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis, France’s sprinting stalwarts

Finsbury Square (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Signs of Blessing (Ire)

(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) race under penalties against some

unexposed rivals including Godolphin’s G1 Prix Jacques le

Marois runner-up Inns of Court (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

“We don’t see the step down to six furlongs as being a

problem--he is a horse who likes a strong pace, so we hope that

this will play to his strengths,” the operation’s Lisa-Jane Graffard

said of the latter. “This is a completely different task, but he ran

well over the straight mile at Deauville last year and this is a

straight six furlongs. He is in good form and we hope that he can

show the promise of his races last year.”

season, Showcasing (GB) sits third on the European 2-year-old

sire list, and is very much building on the foundation laid by

champion sprinter Quiet Reflection (GB) from his second crop.

That standout mare was conceived at just £4,500 at Whitsbury

Manor Stud, and in the six years since Showcasing’s fee has

climbed to £35,000. Cont. p11

Fresh off wins by Showcasing’s Soldier’s Call (GB) in Royal

Ascot’s Listed Windsor Castle S. and Advertise (GB) just last

week in the G2 Arqana July S., TDN’s Alayna Cullen caught up

with Whitsbury Manor’s Ed Harper to talk about Showcasing,

and we have an excerpt from her video interview here.

AC: So far, 2018 has been an exciting year for Showcasing. Can

you tell us a little bit about his successes on the track so far?

EH: 2018 was always going to be the year that people were

really putting the spotlight on him, as it's the first year the

2-year-olds have been bred from a slightly increased fee. The

2-year-olds this year were bred on a £15,000 fee. He's already

had a couple of stakes winners; he had the Royal Ascot winner

for Archie Watson and now he's had the July S. winner. He's had

a lot of very promising 2-year-olds run. He's had seven individual

2-year-old winners already this year, but a number of seconds

first time out that I've been equally excited about. I couldn't be

happier.

AC: How has Showcasing's 2018 breeding season gone?

EH: It's gone very well. He covered 140 mares and got 136 in

foal, which we are very proud of. He's always been very fertile,

but the fertility actually gets easier as their fees increase, with

the quality of mares coming to him. We're always going to limit

him to the number of mares he's covered because our clients do

like the fact that we never go mad on numbers. And we've

always done that across the board with our stallions.

AC: Can you tell us about any particular mares that have gone

to him this year?

EH: He's had a host of group winners this year. I've never been

one to sound too smug over the phone when you book a big one

in, because I think they could come from all sorts of places. But

he has covered quite a few Pivotal mares this year, which is

encouraging with Advertise being out a Pivotal mare. He's also

beginning to have a nice record with Dansili mares, I think. He

got sent quite a few of them. So, it was a nice book across the

board, and we sent I think 20 of our own group mares to him.”

Solid and consistent throughout his career, Mr Lupton took the

Weatherbys Hamilton £300,000 2-Y-O S. at Doncaster and was

second in Redcar’s Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy in 2015, ran fifth

in the following year’s G1 Haydock Sprint Cup and captured

Newmarket’s competitive Longholes H. last May. This term, the

best of his efforts came when runner-up in the Listed Cammidge

Trophy back at Doncaster on Mar. 24 and when successful again

in a big-field handicap over this course and distance on May 26

and he finally gained the black-type win he deserved here.

Enjoying a 12th jockey change as Jack Garritty stepped in, the

chestnut was held up in customary fashion and after inching

ahead approaching the furlong marker dug deep to hold Alpha

Delphini in the drive to the line.

enough to hold his rivals headed by the filly Pivottina. In doing

so, he was providing his first-season sire Anodin, Haras du

Quesnay’s MG1SP full-brother to Goldikova (Ire), with a first

black-type winner in the process.

“He’s a nice precocious horse who has been doing well,”

trainer Christophe Ferland said. “Last time at Toulouse, he had

to give a lot of weight to the second but still managed to win

and I was afraid he had had a hard race there, but he recovered

well and was in top form today. I like the way he controlled the

race when he got to the front and you will not see much of him

now until September, when he will be back for the [Sept. 2 G3

Prix la] Rochette. If he is good enough, he’ll then go for the [G1]

Grand Criterium.” The owners’ racing manager Pierre-Yves

Bureaux added, “He is from the first crop of Anodin, so

obviously it is a nice start for him. This is especially pleasing, as

he is not a homebred and we bought him.”

Harmless is out of an unraced daughter of the listed-winning

Snow Gretel, who is a half-sister to the G2 Royal Lodge S. winner

and G1 2000 Guineas runner-up Snow Ridge (Ire) (Indian Ridge

{Ire}). Her dam is Snow Princess (Ire) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}), who

was runner-up in the 1997 G1 Prix Royal-Oak at this venue.

Labeled a ‘TDN Rising Star’ following her taking debut success

over an inadequate mile at this circuit Apr. 19, Zarkamiya took a

backward step next time when only fourth in a 10 1/2-furlong

conditions event at Chantilly May 18 and reappeared with

questions to answer. Anchored in mid-division early by

Christophe Soumillon, the bay had to navigate her way around

the errant long-time leader Aumale (GB) (Dansili {GB}) inside the

final quarter mile as fellow ‘TDN Rising Star’ Enchanting Skies

got first run on her. Finding some of her brilliant dam’s famous

acceleration to close the gap, she managed to join that rival in

the last 50 metres before asserting for a vital first black-type

success.

Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre is hoping she can still measure

up to her outstanding pedigree. “She’s a sweet filly, but she has

a tendency to worry about everything and her rider has to

manage her stress,” he explained. “He did that very well today

and she was able to show her true quality. Of course, you would

expect there is improvement to come as she is very lightly-raced

and so well-bred, so we’ll see how she comes out of this. The

[Aug. 12 G3 Prix] Minerve at Deauville is a possibility.” The Aga

Khan’s racing manager Georges Rimaud added, “This is

obviously a nice stallion and mare combination. She was sore in

her back after last time and she took a long while to come back.

She also likes an even track like this.”

Zarkava, whose best days were reserved for this track,

requires no introduction as the ground-breaking unbeaten

heroine of the Arc and G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and

G1 Prix de Diane. This is her sixth foal and second winner

alongside the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero and G1 Prix du

Jockey Club runner-up Zarak (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}). Her 2-year-old

colt by Invincible Spirit (Ire) is named Zarkallani (Fr), while she

also has a yearling filly by Siyouni (Fr).

ZOUSTYLE WINS AGAIN; TO SPELL Zoustyle (Aus) (Zoustar {Aus}) earned ‘TDN Rising Star’ status

with a five-length maiden score at Doomben on June 27, and the

dark bay followed up on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday with

another facile front-running score, stopping the clock in :58.66

for the five furlongs over soft going. Trainer Tony Gollan told

Racing Queensland that the 2-year-old will sit out the spring

before aiming at a Sydney autumn campaign.

“He ran a good time again, which is good and he was very

impressive once again,” Gollan said. “The spring has probably

come a bit too early for him this time so I’ll put him away for a

decent spell. This is his first preparation so I’ll let him enjoy it

and he can come back matured and a lot stronger. He’s a good

horse in the making and deserves to be looked after.”

“He’ll come back after a break and have one or two runs and

possibly in a stakes before we look at the Sydney autumn with

him.”

Zoustyle is one of a handful of standouts for the dominant

leading first-season sire by prizemoney, Zoustar, who stands at

Widden Stud and will shuttle for the first time to Tweenhills Stud

in Britain next year.
