Don’t chase your tail when trying to fix your computerSometimes when computers

malfunction, the timing can becoincidental causing you to

chase your tail around trying to fixit. Most of the time when yourcomputer starts acting squirrelly, itsgood practice to consider the lastthing that happened right before theproblem popped up and then try toundo whatever it is that waschanged.

But then again, sometimes undo-ing the last thing that happened canbe a red herring, causing you to spin

your wheels for hours. Take this email I received from

George for instance: "Hi Sean. Readyour articles every week and lookforward to them. It's the first articleI look for in Hometown News. "Sean,

I was having a problem with myMicrosoft mouse, so my son gave mean optical mouse to install. I justdisconnected the old one andplugged in the optical mouse andturned the computer on. It beganloading files for it and now, everytime I turn on the computer, I haveto hit F1 to continue loading win-dows. "Then I'm told that Windowshas updated my computer clock andasks me to check it. It is alwayswrong and I have to correct themonth, year and time. "Do you haveany ideas what is causing thisbecause it never has done thisbefore? I'm sure it had to do withadding the new mouse (italics addedby me). "I recall reading one of yourarticles where you said most com-puter problems were due to softwareadded to the computer. Any correc-tions I can make? "Thank you inadvance and please don't stopwriting your articles because youcertainly have made a big differenceto so many of us." - George fromPort St. Lucie

On the surface, it would appearGeorge is on the right track, becausehe knows that when he added thenew hardware (the mouse) - andoften when new hardware isinstalled - problems can occur. Butafter reading his email and consid-

ering what was going on, I realizedthat George was about to start"chasing rabbits." This is how Ireplied to George: "Hi. Thanks forreading! What's happening on yoursystem likely has nothing to do withthe new mouse, just coincidencethat it started happening at thesame time you added a new piece ofhardware. "Your machine is proba-bly older than three years, yes? Onyour motherboard is a small battery, such as that found in a watch. Whenthat battery runs down, you willhave to hit F1 every time you bootand reset the clock. With the batterydead it loses track of time when itpowers down and all BIOS settingshave to be reset on boot up. Un-plugthe system, open the 'can' and lookfor a watch-like battery (probablyabout the size of a quarter) andreplace it. That ought to correct theissue. Hope that helps and thanksagain for reading." – Sean

The next day I opened my e-mailand found the following e-mail fromGeorge: "Hello Sean. Thank you somuch for the info on the deadbattery. I never thought of that andyes, my machine is over seven yearsold and I have never opened the'can,' but the way you explained it, I

A typical story about the fear of car buyingEarl Stewart is the owner and general

manager of Earl Stewart Toyota in NorthPalm Beach. The dealership is located at1215 N.Federal Highway in Lake Park.Visit www.earlstewarttoyota.com,call(561) 358-1474,fax (561) 658-0746 oremail [email protected].

Below, you can read the Facebookexchange between me and a youngwidow from Arizona. She contacted

me to help her buy a car. I chose to writethis article about her request, because herfear of car buying is so typical, epidemicin the U.S.A. The annual Gallup poll onEthics and Honesty in Professions, alwayslists car dealers last or next to last. Manypeople would prefer to experience a rootcanal at their dentist than buy a car fromtheir dealer. Those victimized the mostare the very young, elderly, less educated, overly trusting, and the English languageimpaired.

I chose to make this young woman’sfear of car buying and my proposedsolution the subject of this blog because itis so typical of so many, but who are afraidto speak out and ask for help. With herpermission, I will follow up later withwhat actually happened when shefollowed my advice to usewww.TrueCar.com to buy her car.

This is my Facebook dialog with theyoung widow from Arizona:

Melinda Nina Wood Nelson:“Can I hireyou to help me to lease a car :) I am awidow. My husband died Sept. 2001. Ibought a brand new Ford Expedition off

the show floor and paid over $40,000. I gottaken because I had never bought a newcar before. In the first week an elderly 82yr. old man took out the passenger side ina Walmart parking lot. He had no insur-ance. The third year, a woman ran a redlight and completely totaled the truckleaving the Vets office after doing ananimal rescue and nearly killed me.Again, she was from Mexico and had noinsurance. Doing my homework andresearch I fought with the insurancecompany and got a decent value to buyanother vehicle but still lost tons ofmoney on the lot value at purchase andwent without a car for nearly 4 months(had to rent). In 2008 I bought a used 2003Navigator from a dealership in Scottsdale. It was mechanically totaled in the secondyear, after $4,000 in repairs I traded it in tothe same dealership for $11,000 in 2010for a 2010 slightly used Chrysler 300 for$17,000. The total price I ended up payingfor the 300 after my trade deduction was...$29,000 including interest at 14 percent. Istill have this car and I am still paying it offat $360 a month and still owe almost$11,000. I needed a big SUV because I doanimal rescue and have to have largekennels for transport so I bought a 2005navigator less than a year ago in cash and

paid over $250 to have it professionallyinspected by a licensed mechanic and testdriven. I was given the go ahead to buythe vehicle as 98 out of 100 perecntmechanically sound. In less than a year Iam now looking at a $4,300 repair bill tokeep it running and with a/c with a verynear future repair coming possibletransmission. The Fletcher's mechanicrecommended I Trade it in while it is stillrunning and filled a/c fluid for cold air. Myfear is getting taken at a dealership, yetagain. I am all most out of money and sickof dealing with car issues and slimycriminal mechanics who charge toomuch and do not even do anything butmake things worse. I have to date lostnearly $60,000 in car loss. I am a good, honest person who saves animalsthrough my rescue. I need a lil karmafrom my Karma savings account :) Willyou please help? I can pay you $100 anhour for up to 3 hours by phone (if adealer can even finish a deal in thattime...doubtful). What do you say...wannabe my gun for hire. To get a feel for who Iam please go to my Facebook pages at,Starbarks Pet Rescue or my personal page,Melinda Nina Wood Nelson. Thank youfor taking the time to read my very longmessage Sir. Have a great day.

Earl Stewart: Melinda, I won't acceptpayment but I would be happy to helpyou lease the car of your choice at a fairprice. I suggest you go towww.TrueCar.com. Choose the exact car

Golf club offers beautiful greens, challenging coursePORT ST. LUCIE — For the past 26

years, Savanna Golf Club in Port St.Lucie has offered locals a perfectplace to walk the greens.

Managed by Wayne Huffins, thispicturesque executive golf courseoffers challenges, gorgeous sceneryand of course, a chance to enjoy thenatural beauty of south Florida.

The popular course, designed byCharles Ankrom, plays to a par of 61and measures just over 3,800-yardsfrom the longest of three sets of tees.

The course opened in 1988 as thefocal point of the retirement com-munity in which is sits. The course issmall, making walking is very easy.

Recently, Hometown News golfcolumnist James Stammer wrote areview of the course:

The greens at Savanna Club arewell guarded and framed withmounding, bunkers, trees or water. While the holes may not be long, thepar-4s feature fairways that havesome rolling undulations to them inaddition to well-placed fairwaybunkers, Mr. Stammer said in hiscolumn.

He continued: There are a dozenpar-3s, the shortest of which is just113 yards long, and the longestcomes in at a stout 197 yards. Best ofall, they are not all nearly the samelength. Looking back on my round, Irealized that I hit eight differentclubs from the tees on those 12 par-3s.

You will find five par-4s and a sin-gle par-5 at Savanna Club. At just460-yards from the tips, playing thepar-5 13th could make you feel like atouring professional with a chance

to make eagle after a well-placeddrive and a daring second.

While there is water around, itdoesn’t really come into play excepton a few holes. There are also fewforced carries over water or wetlandshere. My favorite hole, the 348-yard,par-4, sixth has two forced carries, one off the tee and another to thegreen. The best angle to attack thegreen is from the right side of thefairway. This however, brings themost water into play on your secondshot. It’s an Ankrom design trade-mark.

Accuracy is well rewarded atSavanna Club. There is no need topull the driver out of the bag. Youcan use fairway woods or hybrids toset up easier approaches into thepar-4s. The greens complexes willeat you up if you don’t hit the puttingsurface. Miss the green and you will

find yourself with some tricky chipsand bunker shots. Add in the gentlyrolling greens and your putter mayget a good workout trying to makepars, he concluded.

Savanna Club is open to the publicand the summer rates are very com-petitive.

Melinda Nina Wood Nelson: You arewonderful. Thank you, I will do that. It ishard to admit fault but I am honest andcan admit my weakness...car buying

Earl Stewart: “Good morning, Melinda. You’re very welcome and don’t feel badabout admitting your difficulty buying acar. Most people have the same difficulty, and it’s not your or their fault; it’s theanachronistic, unethical and often illegal

way most car dealers sell cars today. Iwould like to ask a favor of you. I write aweekly blog, advising car buyers just as Iam advising you now. May I use ourFacebook dialog in my blog, www.Earl-StewartOnCars.com this week? If youprefer, I could redact your name. Please letme know this morning, if possible.Because your situation is so typical, Ibelieve your real life story would greatlybenefit many others. If you agree, we canfollow up next week with how you fared

followed my advice. Thanks very much. :)

Melinda Nina Wood Nelson:Yes, youmay use my name and my message. Iappreciate all you do for folks like me.Thank you :)

When I hear back from Melinda as tohow her TrueCar purchase experiencewent, I will relate it to you in an upcomingcolumn.

Ball game pricesSt. Lucie Mets game tickets were $8

each on July 4? The Mets offer very fewdiscounts if any, and we always hear orread about promotions after the fact. When my kids were young the town welived in had a farm team of the TorontoBlue Jays. Back then they had promo-tions and we would go to many gamesevery season. You met interesting peopleand would see them at nearly everygame. Monday night was always churchbulletin night. A whole family was admit-ted free by bringing in their church bul-letin. The stands were always full withfamilies. I guess the money was made offthe concessions as every family would behaving hot dogs and cokes. Thus makingmemories for all involved at a price that afamily could afford. I am just thinkingthat the Mets could maybe give back a lit-tle.

About minimum wageOwning a service business required

visiting accounts located in several coun-

ties. Over time, I became acquainted withfamilies in the rural communities. Beinga country boy and having grown up inthe cotton fields, it was always temptingto lend a helping hand to my own kind. After watching a couple high-school boysprogress through their senior year, Ioffered them jobs upon graduating. Oneof the young men was the local basket-ball star and the other was the son of apastor. They were bright, clean cut andeager to gain employment.

We were all excited. Their starting paywas somewhere above the minimumwage. At the time, I thought how nice itwould be if they learned the business andsomeday took it over. Having no one toleave the business to, why not?

It was a fleeting thought. At 8 a.m. onhis first day, the basketball player wasasked to sweep the floor. The floor areawas about thirty-five feet wide and thesame in length. “As soon as you’re fin-ished we’ll do a few service calls,” I said. When five o’clock came, he was stillsweeping. Around and around he swept, never quite getting the dirt corralled. Thepoor fellow was in over his head. He hadnever used a broom. The next day hewent out with a service crew to pick upand deliver equipment.

The pastor’s son worked diligently, learned fast, and had a knack for repair-ing electronics, which was very helpful. Iwas very encouraged. One out of two.Fifty percent isn’t bad.

A week passed and after consultingwith my foreman it was decided that thebasketball player was out of his league. Itseemed there was not one job he wascapable of doing, regardless of how sim-ple. A high school graduate — regrettably— we had to let him go.

The pastor’s son advanced to the pointthat he worked alone servicing theequipment. After a couple pay raises hebought a new Mustang Cobra and hadeverything going his way.

It was encouraging—but—his appear-

ance had started to spiral downward. Hewould come to work with long dirty mat-ted hair, unshaven and clothes thatlooked as if he had slept in them. Hisbody odor preceded him. He was theantithesis of a company service repre-sentative.

I took him aside, one on one, talking tohim about his appearance. Reasoningwas not in the cards. Rolling his eyes backin his head he said, “You mean you wantme to look like you?”

I gave him leeway and tried to overlookhis total absence of childhood rearing.

The large truck we used to moveequipment blew an engine. New engineswere expensive. Then the transmissionwent out. They too were expensive. It waslater revealed that he liked to drag racewith the big white truck.

Several days later a phone call in thewee hours of the morning woke me. Itwas the police. They had found theyoung man and one of his friends in ouroffice building smoking pot. I immedi-ately dressed and drove to the office. Myfirst words were, you’re fired, get off thepremises. I then asked the police officerto remove them from the property.

What does all this have to do with min-imum wage? Just this! I don’t mind teach-

ing a person a trade with the expectationof the individual becoming a loyalemployee. But I’ll be darned if I’m goingto pay someone for the privilege of teach-ing them what their parents should havetaught them while they were growing up.Young people today do not know how towork! Period. The minimum wage is not awage that will provide a person with all oftheir wants or needs. It’s for a time inwhich they learn to work. Then it’s up tothem. If one cannot prove to theiremployer that they are worthy of a payincrease—then they don’t deserve it.

Of the two examples, the basketballplayer was the best employee. We neverfound anything that he could do, but allhe cost were his wages. The pastor’s soncost the business wages, a new engine, transmission, tires and gave the compa-ny a bad reputation.

If you think you’re worth more thanthe minimum wage, prove it. Everyemployer out there is looking for peo-ple who are worth more than the mini-mum and will gladly pay to get them.

To paraphrase Henry Ford: If peoplewill stop searching for a job and startlooking for work there will be fullemployment.

What a concept.

ed plenty of art supplies for me to explore and developmy abilities,” she said.

Quickly disillusioned with the structure of art schooland feeling her creativity stifled, Ms. Pettersen decidedto strike out on her own and support herself doing oddjobs in order to paint. She ultimately ended up in thecorporate world and got married, but soon found her-self in an abusive relationship that lasted seven years. Ithad taken a toll on her by the time she got out of it, andshe ended up strung out on drugs on the streets of Dal-las. She credits God with giving her the grace to look upat that point in her life and quit drugs completely.

“This was not the life I wanted to live for it was noth-ing but misery,” Ms. Pettersen said.

She subsequently got employment painting backdrops for photographers and before long began toexhibit her own work in galleries shows across the coun-try. She felt so blessed that she decided to return to hernative state of Alabama in 2006 and open up a nonprofitart center for abused women and children called Alaba-ma Art with Heart. She and another artist worked hand-in-hand helping raise funds for the local children’s hos-pital, hospice and other organizations until Ms.Pettersen decided to resign and move to New Orleans in2009.

She found so much success selling her artworks inNew Orleans that she had to work seven days a week tokeep up with demand. She discovered Tai Chi at thistime and began practicing it for to help ease the stress ofher success.

Everything seemed to be falling into place for herwhen, out of the blue, detectives found her in Louisiana

and arrested her for a drugpurchase she had made sixyears before while in Dallas.Instead of trying to fight thecharges, Ms. Pettersen pledguilty and served ninemonths in a federal prisonin north Florida.

“Life isn’t always fair,” theartist said. “No one seemedto care that I had been drug-free for over five years andhad started a nonprofitorganization to benefit myhometown community.”

Ms. Pettersen says shesaw the hand of God in theexperience, and the timeflew by as she taught her fel-low inmates art and contin-ued practicing the little TaiChi she knew. By the timeshe was released, she had

determined to learn Tai Chi from a master rather thanjust dabble in it. That search led her first to the TreasureCoast in 2012, then to Fort Lauderdale, without findingthe instructor she was looking for. She had almostdecided to return to New Orleans when someone toldher about Master Chen’s Wellness Center in Stuart.

She subsequently returned to Port St. Lucie in Janu-ary 2014 and has been steadily painting in her garagestudio and studying with Master Chen ever since. Now42, she says the long road it took her to end up in Port St.Lucie has made her who she is today.

“They say it is not about reaching the finish line, butrather it’s about the journey,” Ms. Pettersen said. “Thisone has been an adventure to say the least.”

And the day after that: "HelloSean. Just a follow up on your adviceregarding replacing the computer'sbattery. It worked like a charm. Ilooked in the computer manual tofind the info on the battery(CR2032), purchased a replacementfrom Radio Shack, opened the 'can'and even I accomplished this task. Will wonders never end? Again, thank you so much for your helpand keep writing those interesting

and informative columns in Home-town News."

Just as I suspected! Consider justhow much time could have beenwasted had we not thought aboutwhat was going on and instead justassumed that the change of hard-ware was the culprit. I can't help butthink just how many older systemsare still in service out there and howmany people are having to hit the F1button every time they have to boot.If this sounds like you, try replacingthe battery; you may have the samesuccess as George.

port, counselling, and crisis interven-tion to someone who has been rapedor abused. We also have a VictimsAssistance Program which offers muchneeded support to a victim or friend orfamily member of a victim of any typeof violent crime.”

The Sexual Assault Victims Programprovides support to the victim as soonas the crime is reported. There is a rapecrisis hotline that either a victim, friend of the victim, law enforcementagent or a doctor or nurse can call tobegin the process. Once the call has

been made, an advocate will meet withthe victim, sometimes in the hospital, and help them through the process ofreporting the crime, preparing for anyphysical exams and follow throughwith them until they have faced theirperpetrator in court.

“This is a terrifying experience andit’s vital that the victim know there arepeople who understand and can helpthem,” Ms. Amandro said. “We canoffer things such as changing the lockson their doors at home to make themfeel safer, to even assisting with reloca-tion. The victims have to know thatthere is a way to feel a level of safetyand that they can depend on someone. It’s such a very important part of thehealing process.”

The Victims Services program canassist in finding counseling for victimsand support groups which can helpthem begin to heal.

The Victims Services Programdepends on volunteers to assist themany cases it sees.

“Right now we only have five vol-unteers for the entire four countyarea,” Ms. Amandro said. “When peo-ple are here from up north, we tend tohave more volunteers, but now theyhave gone home for the summer andwe are really in desperate need forhelp.”

Volunteers must pass a backgroundcheck and participate in traininghours and on-the-job training.

“Our volunteers meet with victimsat the hospital and follow through withthem through court proceedings, dep-ositions, giving them a shoulder tolean on and just being there in everysense for the victim,” Ms. Amandrosaid. “Our volunteers make so muchdifference in the lives of each victim. They are their voice when it seemsthey have none.”

The Victims Services 24-hour hotlineis (800) 569-7273. The 24-hour rape cri-sis hot line is 1-866-828-7273.

For information on becoming a vol-unteer with either of the programsoffered through the Victims ServicesProgram, call Tracy Amandro at (772)462-6830.

HoroscopesFor famous barbecue, visit Tillman’sFORT PIERCE — Barrachel

Tillman loves what he does. When Mr. Tillman talks

barbeque, his face lights upand it’s easy to see, and taste, that his pride is heavilyinfused in his art: cooking.

On a recent trip to Till-man’s Famous Barbecue, Iwas delighted to try somegood, old-fashioned,smoked meat with homecooked sides like macaroniand cheese, baked beansand collard greens.

“People eat with eyesfirst,” said Mr. Tillman as wewaited for our lunch toarrive. “It’s about presenta-tion, the smell, and peoplelove good barbecue.”

Mr. Tillman bought hisfirst food truck with the helpof his grandparents when hewas 17. He soon talked astranger into letting himhave an old barbeque grillthat was rusting away in her

back yard. After months ofpersuasion, she relented andgave him her recentlydeceased husbands prideand joy.

“I told her that I would con-tinue the legacy and makeher proud,” Mr. Tillman saidwith a twinkle in his eye. “Inursed the grill back tohealth. I polished it, fixed it,cleaned it and made sure itwas ready. Soon, a guy Iknew asked if I was justgoing to look at it or actuallycook on it…. And that was it.From then on, I dabbledwith sauces, meats and therest, you could say, is barbe-cue history.”

Mr. Tillman has perfectedhis craft, making some of themost mouth-wateringsauces, including a new cre-ation out of his kitchen, thelip-smacking barbecuesauce.

“Some of my employeeswere in the back experi-menting with the sauces andthey brought this one to me,”

he said while we enjoyedperfectly smoked ribs cov-ered in the new sauce. “As Iwas eating it, I thought, Ihave to come up with aname for this… and I wassmacking my lips because itwas so good, and then Iknew that was the name…the lip-smacking barbecue

sauce.” Mr. Tillman insisted that

my guest and I try the bar-beque ribs, chicken, rib tips, and sample some of the sidedishes available.

The ribs were incrediblytender with the perfect mixof spices. We chose to add

Since I base a lot of my topics onemails I receive, one topic that hasbeen very active is crabgrass.

Crabgrass is a very common problem inmany of our lawns. Crabgrass is actuallya summer annual that germinates eachyear, mainly in the summer although inour area of Florida, crabgrass can be anuisance almost all season. Sincecrabgrass tends to grow in large bunch-es, it can rapidly take over a lawnespecially if it is not in the best ofhealth. A single crabgrass plant canproduce as many as 150,000 seeds! That

is why the problem may seem tomultiply season after season. Crabgrassis not only a problem in Florida but is aproblem throughout the U.S.

Crabgrass is not only a nuisance, butit can be often difficult to control. Many

of the herbicides that you can get overthe counter are only effective if youhave a lawn other than St. Augustine. Most crabgrass killers are actuallyherbicides for killing broadleaf weedsand this type of herbicide can causebrowning of your lawn if it is St. Augus-tine or Floratam.

Fortunately, most crabgrass infesta-tions are in other types of lawns such asBahia and Bermuda grasses. If you havethese lawn types you can use a crab-grass killer with good results

I emphasize that this type of treat-ment will only prevent the crabgrassthat has not yet germinated. You canfind these products at many localgarden and hardware stores. Althoughyou should follow label directionscarefully, there are some generalguidelines you should consider. Alwaysapply the herbicide uniformly acrossyour lawn as if you miss any areas, theseedlings will have an opportunity togerminate and do their thing. Inaddition, do not de-thatch your lawnimmediately after applying the herbi-cide as the chemical barrier will bebroken. Do not use a pre-emergentherbicide if you already have aninfestation. In this case you should usea post-emergent herbicide to kill theexisting crabgrass. If over the countermeasures do not do the trick, then theuse of a professional lawn service wouldbe advisable.

I want to again stress that you readthe directions carefully and follow them

precisely to avoid damaging your lawnor the environment.

If you have the St. Augustine variety, you should only use Atrazine for yourweed control needs. Although it will notbe as effective as the other herbicides, itwill provide a safe treatment that willnot brown out your Floratam lawn.Atrazine is the active ingredient in suchproducts as Scott’s Bonus-S along withother brands of Floratam weed controlproducts.

Before using any insecticide orherbicide, follow safe practices and userubber gloves, safety glasses and achemical respirator (if you are going tobe spraying the product). Always usethe appropriate amounts as excesschemical can make its way to thegroundwater and contaminate yourwell. If you get the chemical on yourskin, flush immediately with freshwater. Remember that many chemicalsare absorbed directly into your blood-stream and can cause long-termproblems if enough is allowed to enteryour body. If you ever have any unusualsymptoms after using a chemical lawnproduct, contact your doctor and takethe bottle of the suspected poison withyou.

some of the sauces available, includingthe Tangy Mustard Barbeque Sauce. Itwas an incredible addition to an alreadyperfect rib.

The BBQ chicken was juicy and themeat nearly fell off the bone and almostmelted when eaten. We tried the TangyMustard sauce on the chicken and itadded just the right amount of tangyand just the right amount of sweet.

Dinners are served with a side dishand garlic bread. I don’t know how any-one can choose between all of theamazing choices. We were fortunateenough to sample some of the sides, including homemade macaroni andcheese, brown sugar baked beans, col-lard greens, coleslaw and potato salad.

All of the sides taste like homemadeand are definitely tops on my list.

I doubt there will be any room leftafter eating the delicious barbecue, butif so, there are incredible cakes availablefor dessert. Mr. Tillman gave me a pieceof lemon cake to take home with me.The cake was incredible. My advice:even if you’re too full for it at the restau-rant, take some home for later…. Youwon’t regret it.

A quick trip south offers a great golfing experience One of the best things about

living on Florida's east coast isall of the great golf courses

available within a short drive of home. One of my favorite is the Greg NormanSignature Golf Course at JupiterCountry Club.

One of Norman's newest designsopened just five years ago and hasfilled its private membership at arecord pace. This past weekend I, alongwith a few colleagues, headed toJupiter to see for ourselves just whatthe attraction is. From the moment we

entered the property through theTuscan-inspired entrance and its hintsof the charming Italian village atmos-phere beyond, we knew why.

This Toll Brothers jewel, a 480-acrecommunity, is situated convenientlyjust west of Florida's Turnpike onIndiantown Road in Jupiter. Thecenterpiece of the community is its 18-hole Greg Norman Signature GolfCourse.

The course features five sets of teesto properly challenge and entertaingolfers of all abilities. From the tips thecourse plays to a very stout 7,228 yards. However, short knockers should fearnot. The other tees can play as short as5,289 yards. Some members havetaken to using different combinationsof tees during their round to get theright fit for their game or their mood.In some cases they do this to make thecourse play entirely different from dayto day.

Known for using the natural topog-raphy of the land he's given, Normanmoved just the right amount of dirtaround for his course here. Incorporat-

ing nature preserves and more than adozen lakes into his design, the coursewas given an overall native character, with large wetland preserves in thecenter. It features generous fairwaysdefined by large, sweeping bunkers.Orange coquina shell waste bunkersadd definition and character to severalholes. Landscaping draws from nativeplants including Pine Flatwoods, Oaksand Sabal Palms.

"I think Greg Norman had some helpfrom Lawrence of Arabia," quippedone member of our group. "I enjoyed alot of time in the sand today."

While the bunkers can snatch awayward shot, they also help to frameeach fairway and green. I did find itodd that Norman seemed to save thenarrowest fairways for the par-5s. Forthe most part there is a lot of room offthe tee. I was also pleased to find thefairways playing hard and fast. I havenever enjoyed the kind of roll on drivesthat I did here. I likely hit some of mylongest drives in years, as did everyonein our group.

The greens are surprisingly excellentconsidering the odd winter weatherthat we experienced this year. Kudos tothe maintenance staff as these are asgood as any I've played in quite sometime. They roll true and have justenough undulation in them to makeevery putt require your full attention.

The course has a solid variety of

holes, including a short par-4 to temptyou to roll up your sleeves and drivethe green. There is one par-5 that onlythe longest hitters will reach in two,and another that most everyone has achance of reaching in two.

The 18-hole course, which is thecenterpiece of this community, hasexceeding members’ expectations. TollBrothers serves a sophisticated marketthat knows the difference between agreat course and a mediocre one.

Our group also knows the differenceand as we walked off the 18th green, the thumbs-up was unanimous.

Other amenities at Jupiter CountryClub include a Grande Clubhouse witha main dining room, private diningarea, men’s and women’s lockerfacilities with card rooms, and golf proshop. In addition, a separate healthand fitness center have a casualoutdoor dining area to serve golf, tennis and pool patrons; familyswimming pool and adult-onlyswimming pool; fitness area; separateaerobics room, and men’s and women’slocker facilities; sports shop withfitness and tennis merchandise; andsix lighted clay tennis courts.
