Norse (Viking) Myth

A myth is an untrue story that explains something or symbolizes something that was not understood at that time or tells a tale that teaches. For example in ancient times people believed that lighting and thunder were caused by angry gods or creatures. In native American myth it was the thunderbird, in Greek it was the god Zeus, in Norse myth it was the god Thor. Many of the myths explain how the world exists, how it was created or why certain things happen in nature. The Norse or "people from the North" and was a name given to people originating from southern and central Scandinavia. They established states and settlements in areas all over northern Europe. They were great sailor/warriors who traded and raided places as far as the middle east.

The Norse believed that the worlds were supported by a gigantic ash tree called “Yggdrasil” which means "World Tree". It connects all the nine worlds of Norse myth.1. Ásgard; Resting on a high branch is the lands and halls of the Asgardians who were the mightiest warrior gods. (Home of Odin the king and Thor his son.)2. Álfheimr : Resting on a high branch is the land of the elves and fairies. 3. Vanaheim: Resting on a high branch is the world of a group of gods of fertility,

Elder Futhark

Elder Futhark is thought to be the oldest version of the Runic alphabet. It was used in the parts of Europe that were the home to Norse and Germanic peoples, including Scandinavia. Other versions probably developed from it. The names of the letters are shown in Common Germanic, the reconstructed ancestor of all Germanic languages. Notice that the English alphabet uses some of the same symbols!

Under each rune represents, how a Viking would say that letter and finally the symbolic meaning. Each rune letter was thought to give its power to a person who wore it, for example if a person wore a U they thought it would give them strength.

Write your Name in Futhark replace v with w and skip any missing letters.
