Electrifying Fleets Electrifying Fleets and Evaluating Total Cost of Ownership — Cloud-based solutionsJuly 27, 2020
Is electrification a good option for my fleet?
Green Planet Lab 2020 - All Rights Reserved greenplanetlab.com 2
Some fleets can save up to $378,000 in fuel costs over 10
years thanks to electric vehicles (10 electric school buses, driving 60 miles per day).
Some fleets won’t save that much…

Let’s understand TCO with a demo:
• 10 electric school buses, driving 60 miles per day in Colorado and California.
• Using incentives, smart charging and and a special energy rate for EVs (no demand charge)
• 4 inputs for simplification purposes (although the software handles more than 40 different inputs: type of vehicles, EV efficiency, local energy rates, incentives, fast charging, installation cost, smart charging, energy storage, etc. )

• Includes: incentives*, smart charging and special energy rate for EVs (no demand charge)
Notes:* Incentives include: federal and state tax credits, incentives and grantsCapex are lower in Colorado (bigger vehicle incentives than in California)Opex are lower in California (thanks to LCFS credits)

Ideal Scenario!
• Smart charging : No• Special energy rate for EVs (no demand
charge): No
Total energy cost: $6,732 / mo.
Total energy cost: $3,024 / mo.
Savings: $3,708 / mo.
• Smart charging : Yes• Special energy rate for EVs (no demand
charge): Yes

ELECTRIC PASSENGER CARS — CALIFORNIA
Average price per kWh: $0.12Price per gallon ($) - gas: $3.6Electric car price: $37,000 Gas car price: $20,000State: California
Without federal incentives for vehicles and charging stations, the TCO would be $1.814 M (instead of $1.576 M). Incentives have less impacts on cars than on buses. Thanks to mass production, EVs are becoming more competitive.

REAL-LIFE CHALLENGESChallenges for electrification
• Need for expensive power upgrades : To the meter or behind the meter
• Utility and electrical contractor timelines: 3-5 months for preliminary design and 6-8 months for final design and implementation
• Permitting: timeline could be long and permit fees vary greatly between different locations
Key success factors
• Select team with experience in EV infrastructure and end-to-end electrification
• Build with an eye to future needs/flexibility (ex. it costs less to oversize your electrical service and panels, and run additional conduit to support additional vehicles in the future)
• Ensure maximization of all available incentives and rebates (federal, state government, utilities…) including tax credits and accelerated depreciation. This would allow fleets to write of a significant portion of their investment in year 1, reducing the net cash impact of the project.

OPPORTUNITIES — ELECTRIFYING FLEETSTotal Cost of Ownership (TCO) is key
• Incentives make a big difference for EV fleets. Colorado has great grants and incentive programs.
• Smart charging can save your fleet a lot of money based on time of use. Invest in smart chargers.
• Special energy rates for EVs (no demand charge) have great impacts on operating expenses. Check if they are available with your utility.
Other key aspects to keep in mind:
• Fleet mission (miles per day, schedule…) can have impacts on TCO
• Urban deliveries don’t require much range — good candidates for electrification
• Routes are predictable and “easy” to plan: Use a good fleet software
• Recharging for fleets is easy: vehicles return at the end of every shift to a depot
• Green house gas emission reduction: Emissions created by last-mile urban deliveries might increase more than 30% by 2030
• Favorable legislation for electrifying (states are enforcing reductions in green house gases for transportation, some cities will ban diesel and gas-powered cars in the coming years, etc.)

HOW WE CAN HELP
1. Electrification project analysis (including total cost of ownership: TCO)
2. Charging system design
3. Obtain or evaluate proposals for you • Business requirements and project scope• Charging station estimates• Vehicle evaluation and pricing• Get incentives, grants and rebates• Help to build the electrification business case for
decision makers• Consultation as needed
13
4. Project management (with utility and installers from construction to testing chargers and helping to prepare a contract with the installer)
