INFORMACION TECNICATECHNICAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
Many of our customers already know operation
and calculation of brakes and clutches. This
information may be used conidently. However
engineers and technicians facing brake and
clutch problems for the irst time may ind them
dificult to assimilate. We shall be pleased to
provide advice on this subject. For assistance
please contact our technical department.
TERMS
First, let us deine some concepts concerning
moments and torques which are frequently used
in calculation.
Me. Clutch static torque.- This is the torque
transmitted when the friction surfaces have no
relative speed, that is the driver and driven parts
are integral (clutch engaged).
Md. Clutch dynamic torque.- This is the torque
transmitted when there is a relative speed between
the driver and the driven parts. It varies depending
on the relative linear speed of the friction surfaces
and on their lubricating condition, among other
factors. This is the torque shown on the table of
characteristics in our catalogue.
Depending on the type of discs used, the ratio
existing between the dynamic and the static
torque is as follows:
Steel/steel plates 1:1.8
Lining/steel plates 1:1.3
Sintered bronze/steel plates 1:1.5
consultarnos.
Mr. Clutch residual torque.- This is the torque
transmitted by the clutch in the disengaged
position.
It depends on clutch position (horizontal or
vertical), relative speed of plates or discs, oil low
rate and viscosity.
With vertical assembly, the mobile frame or
pressure plate, if it is not separated by springs,
will be mounted at the lower position to prevent
its weight from increasing residual torque.
Mc. Load torque or static torque.- This is the
torque required to overcome the work done by
the machine and frictions. Its value is equal to
the tangential force to be made multiplied by the
length of the corresponding lever arm.
Mc = F • r
Ma. Acceleration torque.- This is the torque
required to accelerate masses up to a speed, in a
required time. To work out this value the following
formula is applied:
J = Moment of inertia in kgm2.
n1 = priven shaft speed in r.p.m.
n2 = Driver shaft speed in r.p.m.
t = Time in seconds.
Ma= Acceleration torque in daNm.
In this formula all moments have to be referred to
the clutch shaft, using the following formula:
J red = J • i2
where J is the moment of inertia of the masses of
a shaft at any given speed; J ref is the moment
referred to the clutch shaft, and i is ratio between
the former and the latter speeds.
correspondiente.
Mc = F • r
J = momento de inercia en kgm2.
t = tiempo en segundos.
Ma= in daNm. J(n2-n1)

DEFINICIONES
Primeramente vamos a deinir algunos conceptos
aproximadamente:
Láminas acero/acero 1:1,8
Láminas acero/guarnición 1:1,3
Láminas acero/bronce sinterizado 1:1,5

If the masses to be accelerated have a linear
motion, their moments are referred to the clutch
shaft, applying the following formula:
m = Masses in linear motion, in kg.
V =
n = R.p.m. of the clutch.
J red =
Mt = Total torque
This is the sum of the load torque and the
acceleration torque.
Mt = Mc + Ma
The J of a 100 mm thick solid iron cylinder, it
works out by means of the following formula:
J = 77 • D4
Where D is its external diameter in m, and J is the
moment of inertia in Kgm2.
J red =
Mt = Par resistente total
Mt = Mc + Ma
J = 77 • D4
ACCELERATION TIME TIEMPO DE ACELERACION
CALORIFIC CAPACITY
In order to calculate the produced heat Q during
every operation, use the following formula:
The work produced by the clutch or brake during
every operation will be transformed into heat, it
will be absorbed by the friction surfaces of the
plates or dissipated into the air, without exceeding
the thermal capacity of the clutch.
In order to calculate the maximum engagements
per hour the following should be taken into
account: friction surface area of the discs in cm2,
number of friction surfaces and caloriic value
(dissipation capacity in Kcal/cm2 hour). For this
last element and according to the type of plate,
the following values should be considered:
1) steel/steel plates
Splash lubrication ≈ 0.4 ÷ 0.5
Inside lubrication ≈ 0.6 ÷ 0.7
Maximum temperature of the friction surfaces:
200° C.
2) sintered bronze/steel plates
Dry running = 0,4 ÷ 0,5
Splash lubrication 1 ÷ 1.2
Inside lubrication 1,5 ÷ 2
Maximum temperature: 500° C.
3) lining/steel plates
Single-plate units, 1 ÷ 2 dry running.
Multi-plate units, 0,2 ÷ 0,3 dry running.
Maximum temperature: 300° C.
CAPACIDAD CALORIFICA
1) discos acero/acero
Lubricación por barboteo ≈ 0,4 ÷ 0,5
La temperatura de las supericies de rozamiento
no debe sobrepasar 200° C.
2) discos acero/sinterizado
The acceleration time can be calculated using the
following formula:
n2 - n1 =
n2 + n1 = where inversion is concerned.
Mt - Mc = in Nm where acceleration is concerned.
Mt + Mc = in Nm where deceleration is concerned.

Furthermore, the energy produced per operation
and per cm2 of surface area should not exceed:
* 25-50 cal/cm2 for wet operation of sintered
bronze/steel plates.
* 6-12 cal/cm2 for wet operation of steel/steel
plates.
* 25-35 cal/cm2 for dry operation sintered bronze/
steel plates.
* 50-100cal/cm2 fordryoperationolining/steel or

n = Velocidad del embrague en r.p.m.
K = Factor de seguridad.
In order to determine clutch size, consider the
máximum resisting torque to be overcome.
While in operation in most cases impact unknown
peaks may happen. For that reason a service
factor K determined by experience should be
taken into consideration. It will depend on the
characteristics of driving and driven machines.
Md ≥ Mt • K
If the machine is not equipped with a lywheel,
calculate clutch torque using motor power, with
the following formula:
Pm = Motor power in kw.
n = Clutch speed in r.p.m.
K = Safety factor.
Md = Dynamic clutch torque in daNm.
For some applications with a high speed and
operation frequency, the calculation should be
complementad by a study on heat dissipation
based on empirical formulations. Please let us do
this for you.
* 25-50 cal/cm2 para discos de acero-bronce
sinterizado en aceite.
* 6-12 cal/cm2 para acero-acero en aceite.
* 25-35 cal/cm2 acero-bronce sinterizado en
seco.
* 50-100 cal/cm2 para acero o fundición-
guarnición orgánica en seco.

The industrial applications of electromagnetic clutches and brakes are very frequent due to the progress in designing of machines and because they perform with required functions.
When a current failure happens in the clutch an over-voltage to be absorved will appear in the coil.In order to protect the contact points of the relays a condenser of 2 μF capacity has to be installed for coils up to 60 watts and of 4 μF capacity for bigger coils.
1. Protection of the coil by means of a varistor.2. For higher tensions than 48V the varistor must be mounted in series with a diode (2A- 1000 V.) The clutch releasing times will be retardad slightly using these protections.3. Normal excitation of the coil.4. Excitation with additional resistance. The connection time reduces by approximately 70% with regard to the previous case.
5. Excitation with momentary overvoltage. The connection time will be reduced by approximately an 80%.6. Excitation with overvoltage and with additional resistance and condenser.7. Excitation with overvoltage by means of discharge of a condenser. The connection time will be reduced by approximately a 90%8. Clutch ralease by excitation with reversed polarity. The disconnecting time will be reduced by a 50%.
When coil body is static, the input is made by the strip through AMP terminals (6.35 Faston). For connection with slipring (rotating coil body), the intake (positive pole) is made through the brush which rubs the slipring. The negative pole is earthed.Carbon-brush is used for dry operation and if the assembly is made in oil-bath the brush will be braided copper. It must be also considered that with oil bath and with circumferential speeds of the slipring above 10 m/s it is advisable to fit two adjacent brushes, as in this way the electrical interruption caused by the oil-film is avoided. The advisable limit speed for use of the braided copper brush is 20 m/s. The brush must be mounted perpenticular to the friction surface, allowing a maximum tolerance inclination of 2o.
The direct current supply voltage is 24 V. and must not exceed +5% or go below -10% of its nominal value. The supply interruption must be foreseen in the d.c. circuit in order to obtain shorter stopping times. To obtain a quicker clutch or brake interlocking the following accelerating methods may be applied:Set in series with the magnet coil an ohmic resistance of double value of the coil resistance in order that the time constant t = L/R be of less value. Thus we obtain a quicker current rise. Obviously the supply voltage is higher in order to obtain the same final value of the current.A better solution than the previous one is to supply directly the coil in a split second with a voltage of 3 or 4 times the nominal voltage value.

The mobile plate has to be placed in the lower position in order to avoid the tightening of the plates when running without load and avoid the residual torque.
VERTICAL MOUNTING
MONTAJE VERTICAL
14 15GOIZPERGOIZPER
The transmission is done connecting the frontal teeth of the driving part with the corresponding teeth of the driven part.
The clutch release time is short and there is not residual torque.
That type of clutches do not admit sliding thus their size determination is very important. The transmissible torque should be higher than the resultant torque Md or that corresponding to the maximum torque of the motor.
The clutches may be installed horizontally or vertically. In the last case the dragging plate will occupy the lower position.
The front teeth may be triangular or trapezoidal using the triangular shape specially for engaging in stopping position.
Clutches could be manufactured with special teeth in order to get engagement in a certain position.
The engagement must be done at low revolutions or once stopped. However the disengagement could be done at any speed.

ELECTROMAGNETIC CLUTCHES AND BRAKES 4.50 AND 4.53 SERIES
EMBRAGUES Y FRENOS ELECTROMAGNETICOS SERIES 4.50 Y 4.53
Due to the design the magnetic field established by the coil doesn't pass through the plates and that is why the response times are very quick.
Referring to the clutch, the magnetic body will be mounted on the motor shaft, in continuos rotation so that the moment of inertia of the masses in motion during every operation is not increased and besides we avoid to apply the current to a stopped collector during every start, which may cause sparks specially working in oil.
Their main characteristic is: multiple plates for dry or wet operation.

These clutches and brakes dispose of multiple applications due to their characteristic construction: Wrapping machines, printing machines, computers.
They are self-regulating within extensive limits and their torque after the first adapting wear will not suffer variation.
At the releasing position they haven't residual torque thanks to a spring incorporated into the armature. Their operation is effectuated in dry running und the friction disc have to be protected against all oil or grease projections.
Since the friction during the clutching and braking moment takes place also between metallic parts, it is normal that same parts are creating wear grooves and lines during their lifetime.

To calculate the necessary torque in an eccentric press, the following formulation is used:
M : turning torque to be transmittedby the eccentrical shaft.
: maximum effort angle beforethe BDC (bottom dead center).
P : force of the press.
r : radius of the eccentric.
ß : angle between the connecting rod and the movement line of the ram in the moment of maximum force.
s : distance from the BDC to the point where the maximum effort is produced (measured at the ram).
h : distance from the BDC to the point where the maximum force is produced (measured at the eccentric).
To obtain angles “ ” and “ß”, and “h” height, the following formulations are used:
In the case where the “r” and “L” values are not known, an estimated calculation about the transmissible torque can be done by using the following formulation:

Series 5.0 is the latest version of our traditional design of clutch-brakes assembled with pins that tighten both covers to avoid deformation and failure due to stress.
The brake side cover is manufactured in aluminium, obtaining a low inertia.

AIR INLET DISC
When the clutch-brake is mounted at the shaft end, it can be fed by a lateral air inlet.
In this way, the shaft is shorter and it eliminates the need to drill the shaft.
The lateral air feeding can be also used in the series 5.5 and 5.6

This series of clutch-brake is the version of the pneumatic actuated and hydraulically cooled multiplate clutch-brake.
It combines the engagement of the pneumatic clutch-brake, with the cooling capacity of the hydraulic clutch-brakes. As a result, we obtain a clutch-brake with the possibility of a high frequency of engagements.
The disc can be cooled by oil bath, (no external cooling) or by forced cooling (pumped oil circuit) depending on the required disipation energy of the aplication.

It is important to deine and difference the torques
considered in the clutching or braking process.
The torque values shown in graph 1 are deined
below.
Primeramente es importante deinir y distinguir los
distintos momentos o pares que se consideran
en un proceso de embragado o frenado.
El siguiente gráico representa a cualquiera de
dichos procesos:
Graph 1
Transmissible torque or static torque Mt:
maximum admissible torque without slip,
depending on the working and design conditions.
Slip or dynamic torque Ms: this is the torque
transmitted once the torque increase time (t12
) is
inished. It changes within the cycle process and
depends, apart from other factors, on the slip
speed and the temperature of the friction surfaces.
4 5GOIZPERGOIZPER
Residual torque Mr: torque transmitted when the
system is not actuated. It depends on mounting
position, (horizontal, vertical, or inclined), speed
related to disc surface, oil low, & viscosity.
When vertical or inclined mounting, the residual
torque increases very much, so the generated
heat is increased as well.
Loading torque ML: necessary torque to activate
the elements in the machine, taking into account
its performance, the action speed, etc.
Characteristical torque Mk: It is the torque
indicated in the catalogue.
Acceleration torque Ma (deceleration torque
when the value is negative): torque indicated in
the catalogue. Usually equal to dynamic torque.
This torque is calculated by using the following
formulation:
To calculate different torques, the following
coeficients are considered.
µ : Slipping or dynamic friction coeficient.
µ0: Static friction coeficient.
The ratio between both coeficients for the
different materials will be indicated in next
chapters.
We deine the torque transmission interruption
times in a similar way than we have done in the
previous paragraph.
Reaction time when interrupting the transmission t
21: Time from the deactivation
of the control until the beginning of the torque
decrease.
Decrease torque t22
: Time from the torque
decrease until reaching 10% of the characteristical
torque.
Disconnection time t2: Sum up of the reaction
delay and the decrease time.
t2 = t
21 + t
22
Like in the torques, it is important to deine
different times existing in the torque transmission
that appear in graph 1, which are:
Reaction delay t11
: time from the activation of the
control until the beginning of the torque increase.
Rising time t12
: time from the beginning of the
torque increase until reaching the stationary
condition.
Link time t1: sum up of the reaction delay time
and the rising time.
t1 = t
11 + t
12
Slip time t3: time of relative movement between
friction surfaces of an actuated mechanism.
Total time tt: Time from the signal until the
torque transmission is accomplished.
tt = t
11 + t
3
t2 = t
21 + t
22
t1 = t
11 + t
12
tt = t
11 + t

Being:
J : moment of inertia (kgm2).
n10

Siendo:
J : momento de inercia (kgm2).
n10

t : tiempo (s).
tiempo concreto.
Dicho par se calcula mediante la fórmula:

It is important to consider the moment of inertia
“J” before making the following calculations.
For example, the moment of inertia of a solid
iron cylinder which is 100mm thick with an outer
diameter D (in mm) is obtained with the following
formulation:
J = 77 • D4 (kgm2)
When the moment of inertia is not referred to the
clutch shaft, it is necessary to reduce it to this
shaft. The following formulation is used.
Jred
= J • i2 (kgm2)
J : moment of inertia of the shaft
masses at any speed. (kgm2).
Jred
: moment of inertia reduced to the
clutch shaft (kgm2).
i : speed ratio between shafts.
n1 : clutch speed (r.p.m.).
n2 : speed of the shaft with inertia J (r.p.m.).
If the masses to accelerate have a lineal movement,
their moments of inertia are reduced to the clutch
shaft as per the following formulation:
m : masses in lineal movement (kg).
v : speed of the mentioned masses (m/s).
Jred
: moment of inertia reduced to the
clutch shaft (kgm2).
J = 77 • D4 (kgm2)
Jred
Jred
: momento de inercia reducido al eje
del embrague (kgm2).
Concerning the heat transmission, the following
concept is deined:
Work per engagement Q: It is the energy
caused by friction and transformed into heat, as
a consequence of engaging.
J : moment of inertia (kgm2).
Mk : transmissible torque (Nm).
ML : loading torque (Nm).
n10
: Speed drive (min-1).
n20
: Speed drive (min-1).
maniobra.
J : momento de inercia (kgm2).
Mk : par característico (Nm).
ML : par de carga (Nm).
n10
: Unidad de velocidad (min-1).
n20
: Unidad de velocidad (min-1).

PERFORMANCE OF FRICTION MATERIALS
COMPORTAMIENTO DE LOS ELEMENTOS DE FRICCIÓN
Depending on some factors, which we detail
below, the friction coeficient can change during
the clutch or brake engagement. These factors
also affect when the torque is transmitted without
relative movement among the friction surfaces:
- Transmitted power.
- Temperature on the friction surfaces
(cooling system).
- Slip speed.
- Combination of friction materials.
- Dry or wet operation.
- Design of the friction surfaces (grooves…).
- Pressure in the friction surfaces.
- Ambient temperature.
- .....
The combinations of materials used in our clutch-
brakes are the following:
The work produced by each cycle, which is
transformed into heat, must be removed without
surpassing the thermal capacity of the clutch-
brake.
In the hydraulic clutch-brakes, the heat is dissipated
by means of lubrication oil. Lubrication can be done
by splash, but when an intense work is required a
forced cooling will be necessary, and lubrication
will be done through the clutch-brake.

The friction surfaces have been designed
with radial slots and spiral grooves, taking into
account (among other factors) the thermal load,
the friction coeficient and the lubrication oil low.

With this combination of friction materials, the
following relation between the static and dynamic
friction coeficient is obtained:
Con esta combinación de materiales de fricción
se obtiene una relación entre coeiciente de
fricción estático y dinámico de aproximadamente:
Wear in this kind of combination is very low. It is
important to assure appropriate lubrication of the
friction surfaces and also to change oil regularly.
aceite regularmente.
The sintered discs have a very good thermal
conductivity that allow temperatures up to 350
ºC approx.
The lubrication means in the friction surfaces
have a big inluence in the heat dissipation
produced in each operation. The most common
values are the following:
Splash lubrication: 0,7-1 J/mm2min
Forced lubrication: 1-2 J/mm2min
The energy produced per operation and per
surface unit cannot exceed 1-2 J/mm2 (VDI 2241).
J/mm2 (VDI 2241).

To calculate the slip time during the brake
engagement t3, the following formula is used:
t12
: Time of torque increase.
k : Correction coeficient.
J : Inertia referred to clutch-brake shaft
(kgm2).
w : Angular speed of clutch-brake (rad/s).
Mk : Brake torque indicated in the catalogue
(Nm).
In hydraulic clutch-brakes, t12
value is short.
The K coeficient is function of the factors
indicated in chapter “performance of friction
materials”. Its value is variable, considering for
calculation k= 1,25
The total braking time will therefore be:
tt = t
11 + t
3
t11
: is also variable.
tt = t
11 + t
3
t11
: también es variable.
The braking angle can be divided in two terms:
1.- Reaction angle: r = w • t
11
2.- Mechanical braking angle (m):
m = f (M, J, w, t
12, t
3 )
f =
r +
m
To simplify the calculation, the following
formulation can be used:
n : Clutch-brake rotational speed (r.p.m.).
11
2.- Angulo de frenado mecánico (m):
m = f (M, J, w, t
12, t
3 )
f =
r +
m

INTRODUCTION TO COMBINED HYDRAULIC CLUTCH-BRAKES
INTRODUCCIÓN A LOS FRENO- EMBRAGUES HIDRÁULICOS COMBINADOS
PROGRESSIVE CLUTCHING AND BRAKING
ARRANQUE Y FRENADA PROGRESIVOS
Hydraulic clutch-brake combinations are
mainly used in mechanical presses, shears,
punching machines and other applications that
require high number of strokes per minute as
well as an accurate start/stop operation. Their
advantage in these applications is due to their
silent operations, low inertia, power savings, and
minimal maintenance.
GOIZPER hydraulic clutch-brake units are
normally designed to operate at 60 bar oil nominal
pressure in the drive circuit and with forced
lubrication system (if no other speciications
are required). The main function of the cooling
oil running through the discs in both sides is to
absorb and evacuate the heat produced there.
It is possible to increase speed, work at higher
rate, and avoid excessive heat increasing the
cooling capacity. Flows are usually between 30
and 80 l/min, depending on the heat demand of
the application, with pressures between 5 and
15 bar in order to conpensate the obstruction
in the lubrication circuit, when oil lows through
ilters, piping, rotary seal, clutch-brake unit, heat
exchanger...
The capacity of the main cooling system must
be at least 15% higher than the generated heat
of the clutch-brake unit and the hydraulic circuit.
In general, the return oil cooling the discs of the
clutch-brake unit shall not exceed the temperature
of 70oC and in the tank the maximum temperature
recommended must not exceed 65oC.
Hydraulic clutch-brake combinations are actuated
by a nearly incompressible luid, instantly providing
nominal pressure and torque. Once the piston
engages them even pressure is instantly applied
on the plates.
The fast start can create a shock load causing
vibration, bearing wear, mechanism failure, etc.
Figure 5 shows a speed/time diagram for the
starting of a conventional hydraulic clutch-
brake unit. As one may observe, the curves for
engagement have a linear proile. In this case
there is a sharp angle at the initial point, relecting
sudden engagement.
Figure 6 shows the same effect for the braking
operation.
To solve this problem, GOIZPER has developed
(and patented) a clutch-brake unit equipped with
progressive piston, which in combination with a
valve, also developed by GOIZPER, can cover
both the clutch and the brake, according to the
need of each application and user (ig. 2 and 3).
otras especiicaciones).
superiores y evitar calentamientos excesivos

EXAMPLE OF HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT / EJEMPLO DE ESQUEMA HIDRÁULICO
Standard GOIZPER sizes offer a wide range of
operating torque. By adding more discs, the
brake and clutch torque gradually increases from
the standard rating. The compact outer diameter
remains the same while the length increases
slightly.
In all clutch torque ratings are static, in an
engaged condition: and the brake torque ratings
are dynamic, in a slipping condition.
In addition, if the clutch-brake application in a
particular unit requires less braking torque than
that indicated in the catalogue, springs may be
eliminated so that the torque of the selected
clutch increases.
GOIZPER also offers different solutions for diverse
applications in the ield of presses, classiied
according to several application parameters:
a) Depending on the piston system:
- Conventional, for simple applications, without
need to regulate the softness of the clutching
and braking.
- Progressive, along with the GOIZPER
valve for the regulation of clutching and
braking for applications that require
greater control of the clutch-brake
engagement and torque transmission.
b) Depending on the type of enclosure:
- Dynamic Enclosure of GOIZPER design, with
the following advantages:
•No need for drilling the shaft.
•External oil collection to the press.
- Static or Dynamic enclosure with other designs.
c) Depending on the assembly:
- With locking ring.
- With keyways.
- At shaft end.
- Between lywheel and frame.
d) Depending on the lubrication:
- Forced.
- Splash.
Finally, GOIZPER can complete its offer with
the design and manufacture of the entire set of
peripherals related to the hydraulic clutch-brake,
including:
- Oil collector (2).
- Rotary union (3).
- Control valve (4).
- Control unit (5).
- Power Pack (6).

CONTROL VALVES FOR PROGRESSIVE CLUTCHING AND BRAKING (6.20.00.9_8) /
VÁLVULAS DE CONTROL CON REGULACIÓN DE EMBRAGADO Y
FRENADO PROGRESIVOS (6.20.00.9_8)
The press safety valve for progressive clutching
and braking (3EV) is used to control the
hydraulically actuated combined clutch-brakes.
For smooth clutching and braking, 2 adjusting
regulators are located in front panel. P1 and P2
electro-valves are for clutch engaging and P3 is
to select the smooth (ON) or emergency (OFF)
braking.
The spools of the valve that actuate the clutch-
brake unit have to be redundant to ensure the
fulilment of the safety regulation requirements.
That means that both spools have to be actuated
to make the machine run, whereas only one spool
is enough to stop it. On the other hand, it must be
veriied that both spools are at the initial position
before every cycle. (External self-control).
frenada de emergencia (OFF).

CONVENTIONAL CONTROL VALVES (6.20.00.9_1) /
VÁLVULAS DE CONTROL CONVENCIONAL (6.20.00.9_1)
The press safety valve (2EV) is mainly used to
control the hydraulically actuated conventional
combined clutch-brakes.
P1 and P2 electrovalves must be switched on
simultaneously to engage the clutch.
The spools of the valve that actuate the clutch
brake unit have to be redundant to ensure the
fulilment of the safety regulation requirements.
That means that both spools have to be actuated
to make the machine run, whereas only one spool
is enough to stop it. On the other hand, it must be
veriied that both spools are at the initial position
before every cycle. (External self-control).
Esta válvula de control (2EV) es utilizada
principalmente para el control hidráulico de
accionamiento de freno embragues hidráulicos
combinados convencionales.
