You probably recognize the name Kellogg from cereal boxes, but did you know that John Harvey Kellogg, the co-inventor of breakfast cereal flakes, was also a famous surgeon and health expert?

He and his brother, Will, were working on creating healthy foods for their patients when they accidentally discovered how to make cereal flakes. The flakes were so popular that the two brothers started the Sanitas Company. Will eventually created his own business, and the Kellogg company, as the business was named, became the world’s leading producer of flaked cereals.

John Harvey Kellogg was born in Tyrone, New York, in 1852. His family moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, when he was young, and he grew up there with his fifteen brothers and sisters. As a boy, he had to work hard, and by age 10 he was working in his father’s broom factory. After finishing high school in a year, he became a public school teacher when he was 16.

James and Ellen White encouraged him to study medicine, and they helped pay for his tuition. He completed a two-year medical course and was placed in charge of the Health Reform Institute, which had been started by the Adventists.

Under his management, the institute became the Battle Creek Sanitarium, a very successful and highly recognized health facility. You may have heard of some of the rich and famous who were treated there:

J. C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, John D. Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, Booker T. Washington, Amelia Earhart, and Warren G. Harding, who later became President of the United States.

John Harvey Kellogg did a lot to promote healthful living. All his adult life, he taught people about the

importance of good nutrition, exercise, rest, and fresh air. A prodigious surgeon,

he performed more than 22,000 operations! Some of his many inventions are on display at Adventist Heritage Village, including a bucking horse exercise machine. Corn flakes and many nut-based foods are among his credits.

Unfortunately, Dr. Kellogg began to have conflicts with church leaders about how

to manage medical institutions. He also promoted strange pantheistic teachings, saying that God was present in everything. Ellen White sent him many messages of warning, but he ignored them and ended up leaving the Adventist Church. As Ellen White wrote, during the more than 30 years he worked for the church, he “occupied the position of leading physician in the medical work carried on by the Seventh-day Adventists.”

o you like to sleep? More important, do you actually need to sleep? I’ve discovered that sleep helps with health, school,

behavior, and overall wellness. So don’t skimp on the zzzzzzzz’s!

About one-third of a person’s life is spent in sleep, which might seem like a waste of time. However, studies have shown that eight hours of sleep a night will help people get better grades on tests, reduce the risk of accidents, and help maintain a better immune system. Young children should have an average of 11-13 hours of sleep a night. Children who get adequate sleep will be more alert, have better memories, fewer behavioral problems, and even be less “moody.”

Some studies were done on people to see how much sleep a person needs and what happens when you don’t get enough sleep. People were

deprived of sleep for eight days and nights. By the end of the study, they began showing signs of mental disturbances, visions, and hallucinations. They tried to fall asleep in any environment.

People in everyday life would not go eight days without sleep. However, if you go twenty-four hours or more without sleep, you might begin experiencing problems similar to the ones the people had in the experiment. Even the time when you sleep is important. Melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep, is highest during the night, and so it is best to sleep during the night instead of the day.

Sleep is a vital essential to life. It can be an aid to those who suffer from depression, anxiety, and problems with the simple things in life. By getting adequate sleep and taking care of our physical and mental wellbeing in other ways, we can have a more active and meaningful experience with God.

John Kellogg invented corn flakes, for a patient with bad teeth. Charles Post invented Grape Nuts. Dr. Kellogg was the manager of a Michigan health spa and Post was a patient. The spa was founded by Sylvester Graham, inventor of the Graham cracker and pioneer of the early 1800s movement to eat more bran.

Happiness I s a Choice!

Adventist School in Michigan.

Draw Your Own Conclusions

an people choose how they feel or must circumstances determine their feelings? Some would say, “Because of

a personal tragedy, I feel unhappy.” But must the circumstances of our lives really determine how we feel, or do we choose our happiness quotient?

The first step to climb out of the black hole of unhappiness is to figure out why you are unhappy. Ask yourself the question, “Why am I unhappy?” If your answer is something like “How can I be happy when” or “I can’t be happy until” then it probably means that you are putting conditions on your happiness. Think about it. Do you really want to limit yourself to being happy

only if certain conditions are met?

Some other answers to this question could be, “You make me

unhappy” or, “If it wasn’t for him I would be happy.” These answers point out that you are “blaming others for your

lack of happiness.” Do you want to go through life depending on other people to make you happy? I don’t!

Vicki Griffin states, “It is also important to

remember that the way we think is also affected by

the lifestyle choices we make, such as diet, exercise, and rest.”

Another important key to happiness is found in God’s Word. Genesis 2:7 says that God gave us life, and we are living! We aren’t just robots that have to think a certain way because of a certain circumstance. We CAN choose how we feel because choice is a gift from God.

Situations will arise in our lives that could cause us unhappiness, but we don’t have to stay that way. Use your power of choice--grasp the hand of Jesus and choose to be happy! Choose to live your life for a God who understands all about your situation. He loves you with all His heart and wants you to be happy. CHOOSE GOD, CHOOSE LIFE, and CHOOSE HAPPINESS! It’s YOUR CHOICE!

Did you know that being happy makes you healthier? And, guess what, kids, you can choose to smile instead of looking grouchy! You can choose to think about all the great things God has given you instead of grumping!

Solomon wrote that “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” Proverbs 17:22 NKJV

Ellen White sure agrees with that. She stated:“You will be benefited with the effort you make to be cheerful…. Get out of doors [and off that couch!] as much as possible, and be benefited with the breezes and the blessed sunshine. Let the songs of the birds and the beauties of nature awaken holy and grateful feelings in your hearts and lead you to adore your Creator…. Gather sunshine about you instead of clouds. Seek to be a fresh, beautiful flower in God’s garden, imparting

fragrance to all around you.” —My Life Today, p. 177

Great practical advice, don’t ya think? Leave the Play-Station, TV, and computer. Run outside, and enjoy the sunshine. And don’t worry, be happy! After all, we are children of God, and that’s the happiest fact ever!

Gather sunshine about you...

id you know that some early Adventists ate pork, smoked cigars, drank coffee, and were abysmal work-a-holics? What caused a change to our Adventist

pioneers’ dreadful health habits?

Here’s the scoop:

Shortly after our church organized [became an “official” church] in May of 1863, Ellen G. White had one of her most important visions. Can you guess what it was about? That’s right—healthy living! As the early Adventists studied their Bibles, prayed and talked about how lifestyle issues relate to Christianity, some became convinced that pork, caffeine, and smoking were bad news. But to help others also make good choices, God sent a special message about health to Ellen White. Here’s what God showed her (and it’s still important today!).

Some Ingredients of the Otsego Health Vision

he principles God gave in that 1863 health vision promised God’s people more energy, more zest for life, less sickness, and greater appreciation for

spiritual things if they would choose to live by them. Here’s a sample! (I have an important question to ask you when you’ve finished reading them.)

True temperance means control in everything we 1. do. This includes appetitie (don’t eat too much just because it tastes sooooo good!), as well as not using alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or caffeine, etc.

Swine’s flesh (pork) is not to be eaten under any 2. circumstance.

Keep your body and home very clean! 3.

Rich cake, pies, and puddings are destructive 4. to your health (rich means lots of sugar and fat content).

Eating between meals injures the stomach and 5. digestive process.

Turning to a nutritious diet of whole grains, fruits, 6. nuts, vegetables, and little sugar may overcome the physical damage caused by a wrong diet.

Sunlight is important, and so is fresh air, especially 7. where you sleep.

Outdoor exercise is essential to healthy minds and 8. bodies.

Caring for health is a spiritual matter; it reflects a 9. person’s commitment to God, and to others who are impacted by our choices.

Don’t blame God for deaths or disease caused by 10. unhealthy choices!

The Adventist Lifestyle

hese principles and others* became the practical outline of the Seventh-day Adventist lifestyle. Ellen White often wrote about these core principles,

probably most clearly in her book, The Ministry of Healing. God didn’t want “health reform” to be a negative, “can’t-enjoy-anything” message! These principles inspire Seventh-day Adventists and others to make healthy choices so they will live happier, longer,** and more meaningful lives to better serve others.

So, here’s my important question: How well do YOU practice these principles? Ellen White herself admitted it isn’t always easy—even she struggled. (At first she hated whole grain bread and craved white bread and meat. But she persisted in making healthy choices and

6 | Ellen White Visionary for Kids

Page 7: Ellen White Visionary for Kids · Ellen White Visionary for Kids | 3 Health Nut Extraordinaire! to manage medical institutions. He also promoted strange pantheistic teachings, saying

Ellen White Visionary for Kids | 7

eventually really enjoyed nutritious food.)

What is the most important reason we make healthy choices? It’s because we love Jesus who gave everything for us, even His own life. We do not want to make poor choices that would hurt Him who loves us so much.

“You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” I Cor. 6:19-20 NLT_____________________________________ * You can find all 33 health principles in the book Messenger of the Lord, pp. 281-284.

affeine is a natural chemical

found in tea leaves, coffee beans, cacao, and cola nuts (the plant that gives cola soda flavor).

Did you know that caffeine can cause your heart to pump faster and your breathing to quicken? This can cause or worsen heart problems. Caffeine is also a diuretic. This means that caffeinated drinks or foods cause you to urinate more often than normal.

Did you know that caffeine is a drug that can be addictive? If you

like drinking or eating stuff with caffeine, then you

will have to have the

same amount each day just to feel

“normal.” If you do not get the same amount each

day you might get headaches, stomach aches or a racing

heart that can make you feel jumpy or nervous. So, it’s better not to start drinking caffeine in the first place.

You’ve Got Issues

ecause we’re bought with a price! That’s

right, Jesus paid for our eternal lives with His life blood. That means we’re precious to God, and because we’re His, our very bodies become the home of the Holy Spirit, of God Himself!

Since Jesus loved us enough to be tortured and killed on our behalf, why would we want to damage the bodies or minds that He treasures? Yet, caffeine does just that! Caffeine is an addictive drug (that’s why regular users may suffer headaches, jitters,

or nausea when they quit) that can be destructive to our central nervous

system, to our blood sugar levels, and to

our sense of peace and well-being, plus caffeine can

increase nervousness, anxiety, and depression.

Though caffeine may give a temporary energy lift, the long-term damage it may cause is not worth the short-term buzz.

In a study done twenty years ago, teens drank twice as much milk as soda pop.1 Now they drink twice as much soda pop as milk. It is really sad that people drink more soda than milk and water. It is really important to drink lots of water so you do not get dehydrated.

So don’t drink too much soda and try to avoid caffeine. No one needs caffeinated drinks,

especially kids. When your mom says, “No, you can’t have a Coke,” listen, and drink something else like milk, juice, or water.

You: Is it a sin not to be a vegetarian?

CT: Nope! But the Bible suggests that our health should be as carefully guarded

as our character (3 John 2). That means it may be as important to exercise and eat our veggies every day as it is to say our prayers!

A vegetarian diet has many benefits. Vegetarians live (on average) longer than non-vegetarians, they are sick less, and many vegetarians experience more energy than non-vegetarians. Daniel (Daniel 1) and his friends are a great example of the benefits of a vegetarian diet.

But being a vegetarian is not the only important part of healthful living.

Christians who want to honor God with their bodies will also choose a low sugar, low saturated fat diet (that’s thumbs down to most fast food!), they will exercise regularly and drink lots of water, they will

avoid alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, they’ll enjoy sunshine (wherever possible) and fresh air, they’ll get plenty of sleep, and they will trust in their Creator God who gave them such awesome bodies and minds!

A Hot& ColdCure

Myths about medical care in the 1800s People with high fevers were not allowed to drink water.

Fresh air (especially at night) was not good for you.

You would die if you didn’t eat lots of meat.

Taking a bath wasn’t good, because you shouldn’t expose your body to the air. Many older people didn’t take a bath all winter!

Doctors often prescribed tobacco for chest coughs.

Children were often given strychnine, a highly poisonous liquid, as a medicine.

One of the rst people to need Miss Sara’s help

was nine-year-old Willie. When Miss Sara arrived

at Willie’s house, she found Willie hot with fever.

His eyes were red and swollen from crying. “Now

tell me all about what happened,” nurse Sara said

to Willie’s aunt who was taking care of him.

“About a week ago, he stepped into a hole

where some broken glass had been thrown, and

cut a gash in his ankle an inch and a half long

and as deep as the bone,” the aunt explained.

Willie’s mother had rubbed pig fat, called lard,

into the wound and tied it up but it continued to

get worse.

Willie’s father took him a long way to see the

doctor. The doctor cleaned the cut and gave Willie

some medicine. The doctor told Willie’s father

to use bread-and-milk poultices on the wound

every few hours. Willie’s family didn’t know how

to make the poultices but they did the best they

could. They used cold milk to soak the bread and

placed it on Willie’s ankle. It didn’t help and they

feared the doctor would have to amputate.

Miss Sara looked at the leg. “It’s blood

poisoning, and a serious case,” she said. “Put the

kettle on and heat water immediately. We’ll do

all we can to save the leg.” She said she would

use hot and then cold, wet, annel cloths, called

fomentations and then wrap the ankle in charcoal

poultices. These treatments were to draw out

the poisons, bring Willie’s fever down, and help

healthy blood to circulate through the poisoned

foot. Miss Sara did these treatments several times

a day. Once, when Miss Sara removed a charcoal

poultice, a piece of glass the size of a kernel of

wheat was on the top of the wound.

Willie’s cut began to heal and the treatments

were given less often. Ten days later Willie was

able to tell his astonished neighbors the story

about the wonderful cure with just hot

and cold water and charcoal.

When Ellen White lived in Australia in the late 1800s, a nurse from Battle Creek Sanitarium,

named Sara McEnterfer lived with her. Since there wasn’t any hospital nearby, Miss Sara

visited neighbors who were sick and in need of medical help. Most people didn’t know

what to do to help someone who was sick and often did something that made things worse.

what you've been up to!Yakima Adventist Christian School— Jumping Rope for Their Health! Ever wonder how long kids have been jumping rope? Well, actually, jumping rope has been around for hundreds of years. But in the 1800s it was a “boys only” activity. According to beliefs of the time, “girls were much too fragile to jump rope and would rupture blood vessels in their head, if they did”! Fortunately, both boys and girls now participate in jumping rope and can do many amazing things with a little practice.

Jumping rope is an excellent way to stay healthy. Minute for minute, jumping rope is more beneficial than walking, jogging, or even swimming. It fights heart disease, obesity, osteoporosis, helps with coordination, and can be a part of a lifelong fitness activity. At Yakima Adventist Christian School, thirty students in grades 1-6, along with some older students to help, work out every Wednesday after school. This energetic group of boys and girls fill the gym with jumping. Every student has his or her own speed rope and Jump Rope Activity Book. Students began by learning the basic side swing and two footed jump. Now, students develop their own routines with fancy steps, as well as partner routines, long rope routines, and even double dutch.

The first jump rope demonstration in April was great! Students participated in a basic two-minute routine performing four different skills. After that, students demonstrated their favorite individual and partner skills. At YACS we encourage the spiritual, academic, and physical health of each of our students. We plan to continue to Jump for Joy!
