God Keeps His Promises

Charles Fitch

A large group of Adventist believers stood around the icy river to witness the baptism of new believers. It was a

cold and windy day, early in October of 1844, but no one complained about the freezing weather. They were happy because they were sure that in just a few days, on October 22, 1844, Jesus would come back to earth and take them home. These believers weren’t thinking about their houses or their jobs or worrying about what they would wear or eat. Their minds were on only one thing: heaven.

O ne person in the group did not live to see the day of Jesus’ expected return. Charles Fitch, the preacher

who had baptized the new believers in the icy waters, got sick and died from a high fever soon after the baptism, on October 14, 1844.

B ut nothing seemed to upset those who were looking forward to Jesus’

second coming. Even Mrs. Fitch, according to a newspaper report, was still smiling after her husband’s death. “In just a few days,” she said happily to her children, “when Jesus comes back, He’ll wake up Daddy and your sleeping brothers and sisters, too, and we’ll be a whole, happy family again, forever!” That was her hope and the hope of everyone who believed that Jesus would come back in a few short days.

O ctober 22 came and went, and Jesus did not come. How

disappointed those Adventist believers must have been when Jesus did not return as they had expected. But although they were sad, these faithful believers continued to pray and trust in Jesus. They believed God’s promises. They were confident that He would always keep His Word. They remembered the wonderful way He had led them in the past, and they were determined to study the Bible and to pray

earnestly, asking God to show them their mistake in understanding the prophecies pointing to Jesus’ return. Jesus was their Friend and Savior, and they knew He would never mislead them.

E ven through their bitter disappointment, one thing gave the

early Adventist believers strength to carry on: their faith. The same can be true for us today. Put your trust in Jesus and ask Him to guide and keep you in everything you do. In John 14:1-3, Jesus promises that He will come back to this earth again. And when He comes back, He will take us to heaven to live with Him. We don’t know when that day will be, but we can be sure that it will happen because Jesus has promised it. And when He comes in the clouds, we’ll be able to look up and say, “This is my God. I have waited for Him, and He will save me” (Isaiah 25:9).

I want to be ready when Jesus comes, don’t you?

You’ve Got Issues

Do you know what is especially great about your question? It sounds as though you really

want Jesus to come back SOON and that you’re getting impatient with waiting! We’re sure Jesus is glad that you are looking forward to His return. If you wanted Him to stay away or to delay His return because you were more interested in some earthly thing, that would make Him sad.

The Apostle Peter has some interesting things to say on this topic. He reminds us that a day

with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day (2 Peter 3:8). In other words, the Lord doesn’t measure time like we do. Peter tells us that scoffers will say, “Why hasn’t Jesus come back like He promised? Things are continuing on just like always.”

Peter reassures us that Jesus will definitely keep His promise to return. The reason He hasn’t come

back yet is that some people are not ready. They haven’t made the decision to accept Jesus as their Savior, and Jesus doesn’t want those people to perish (2 Peter 3:9). Aren’t you glad we have such a loving God?

Ellen White expands on Peter’s statement. She says, “It is the unbelief, the worldliness,

unconsecration, and strife among the Lord’s professed people that have kept us in this world of sin and sorrow so many years” (Evangelism, page 696).

Think about it. Could it be possible that we ourselves are part of the reason Jesus hasn’t returned yet?

Could it have to do with our lack of faith or our preoccupation with the things of this life? Is He waiting for us to fully commit ourselves to Him?

Now these are questions we all could pray about, don’t you think?

Why is it taking Jesus so long to come back?

In her book Early Writings, page 16-19 (adapted), Ellen White describes what she saw in Heaven while in vision for the first time at the young age of seventeen!

Everyone was dressed in glorious white from their shoulders to their feet. Angels were all around us as we marched over the sea of glass to the gate of the city. Jesus raised His mighty, glorious arm, took hold of the pearly gate, swung it back on its glittering hinges, and said to us, “You have washed your robes in My blood, stood firm for My truth, enter in.” We all marched in and felt that we had a perfect right in the city. Here we saw the tree of life and the throne of God. Out of the throne came a pure river of water, and on either side of the river was the tree of life. On one side of the river was a trunk of a tree, and a trunk on the other side of the river, both trunks made of pure, transparent gold. At first I thought I saw two trees. I looked again, and saw that they were joined at the top into one tree. So the tree of life was on both sides of the river of life. Its branches bowed to the place where we stood, and the fruit was fabulous; it looked like gold mixed with silver. We all went under the tree and sat down to look at the glory of the place, when Brothers1 Fitch and Stockman, who had preached the gospel of the kingdom, and whom God had laid in the grave to save them, came up to us and asked us what we had passed through while they were sleeping in their graves. We tried to remember our greatest trials, but

they looked so small compared with the lavish celebration that surrounded us that we could not speak them out loud, and instead we all cried out, “Alleluia, heaven is cheap enough!” Then we touched our fabulous harps and made heaven’s arches ring. With Jesus as our leader we all descended from the heavenly city down to this earth, onto a great and mighty mountain. The mountain could not hold Jesus up, so it divided, forming an enormous plain. Then we looked up and saw heaven’s great city, with twelve foundations, and twelve gates, three on each side, and an angel at each gate. We all cried out, “The city, the great city, it’s coming, it’s coming down from God out of heaven,” and it came and settled on the place where we stood. Then we began to look at the wondrous things outside of the city. There I saw absolutely amazing houses that looked like silver, supported by four pillars set with the most stunning pearls. The saints were to live in these houses.

1 Early Adventists called each other brother and sister to show the close family ties they experienced together.

Alleluia, heaven is cheap enough!

As some wise men gazed into

the night sky, they suddenly noticed

a strange bright light on the western

horizon. What did it mean? Had a great

event taken place? They didn’t know

that the light came from the angels

who had appeared to the shepherds in

Bethlehem.

The bright light gradually faded

away until it looked like a new star in the

heavens. The wise men thought of the

prophecy that says, “‘A star will come

from Jacob. A ruler will rise from Israel’”

(Numbers 24:17, ICB). Could this star

be a sign that the Messiah

had come? They decided

to follow it and see.

These wise men were

philosophers who lived in a

country far to the east. They had studied

the things God had created in nature,

and they had learned to love God.

They had also studied the prophecies

about the Messiah and believed that His

coming was near. The Jews called these

men heathen, but they were not idol

worshipers. They were honest men who

wanted to know the truth and to do the

will of God.

As the wise men followed the star,

it led them into Judea. But when they

came near Jerusalem, the star grew so

dim that they could not follow it. Thinking

that the Jews could guide them to the

Savior, the wise men went into Jerusalem

and asked, “‘Where is the baby who was

Ellen White Visionary for Kids | 7

born to be the king of the Jews? We saw His

star in the east. We came to worship Him.’

“When King Herod heard about this

new king of the Jews, he was troubled. And

all the people in Jerusalem were worried

too. Herod called a meeting of all the

leading priests and teachers of the law.

He asked them where the Christ would

be born. They answered, ‘In the town of

Bethlehem in Judea’” (Matthew 2:2-5, ICB).

Herod sent the wise men to

Bethlehem, saying, “‘Go and look carefully

to find the child. When you find him, come

tell me. Then I can go worship him too.’

“The wise men heard the king and

then left. They saw the same star they had

seen in the east. It went before them until it

stopped above the place where the child

was. When the wise men saw the star, they

were filled with joy. They went to the house

where the child was and saw him with

his mother, Mary. They bowed down and

worshiped the child. They opened their gifts

they brought him. They gave him treasures

of gold, frankincense, and myrrh” (Matthew

2:8-11, ICB).

The wise men gave Jesus the most

precious things they had. We should follow

their example and give to Jesus the best of

all we have—of our time, money, and love.

Get Involved

Jesus says there are going to be some surprises in heaven!

We might not see some people we expected to see. Some people who prayed lovely prayers won’t be there. Neither will some people who did miracles in Jesus’ name (Matthew 7:21-23). On the other hand, Ellen White says many will be in heaven whom their neighbors thought would most certainly not be there! (Christ’s Object Lessons, p.72).

So why will some people be there and some not? The answer centers around a name: JESUS! He’s the only way to heaven (Acts

4:12). When we accept Him as our Savior, we will

do the things He did, such as caring for the needy and homeless and being compassionate to those who are poor. Jesus says that in the end He will separate the sheep

from the goats (the saved

from the unsaved)

based on what they did for others

(Matthew 25:31:46).

We asked some students from Grand Rapids Junior Academy to share their experiences participating in a school project called

Christmas Gift Bags for the Homeless and the impact that it had on them.

Who’s Gonna Bein Heaven?

FUN! with a purposeVe.Z: Tell us a little about your project:

Hannah: Every year for the past twelve years my school’s Junior High has gone into downtown Grand Rapids to hand out gift bags to the homeless. We start collecting things to put in the bags around September, and we hand them out in December.

We put scarves, hats, mittens, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, socks, and other things into our gift bags. It’s so much fun collecting all these things. Some of my friends and I even learned how to knit scarves, and we donated the ones we made.

Megan: Some people go to hotels and ask if they would like to donate personal bottles of shampoo or soap. And sometimes we go out and buy the things we need for the bags.

Marlee: We decorate the paper bags with festive pictures of Christmas trees, snowmen, candy canes, and other winter pictures. Then, on the day we hand out the bags, we form an assembly line and fill the gift bags with all of the items we collected over the months. Our goal this year was to make 250 gift bags, but when we finished counting, we had almost 300!

Ellen White Visionary for Kids | 9

Bailey: For the past two years, we have added something special from us personally, such as a cookie or a memory text on a card.

Ve.Z: Have you had a specially memorable experience?

Ricky: We’ve all had many different experiences while handing out our gift bags. I remember the time when one man returned and gave back the card with the Bible text. On it he had written, “Please pray for me. Your friend, Charles.” It touched me that in such a depressing place, some people still have their faith. The project left me wishing we could do more. That’s when I realized we can! We can pray for the homeless in our communities as Charles asked us to do.

Bailey: One great moment occurred during the first year I was involved in this project. About a week before we handed out the bags, we went on a field trip to Mel Trotter Mission. The people at the mission had set up stations showing about eight to ten different places a homeless person might live, including a car, a cardboard box, and a door frame.

Danielle: That display was called “A Walk in Their Shoes.” We learned that some people sleep in garbage bins and even in boxes. The display also showed that some homeless people can fit everything they own into one shopping cart. That trip was a huge eye opener for me.

We also went into a room with a piano and invited a homeless man to play. We all sang Christmas songs with him. That was really fun!

Ivan: My group went down by a homeless shelter and handed out bags to the people who were there. One person we handed a bag to was a mentally challenged person. He was drooling everywhere. His teeth were crooked, his clothes were dirty, and his hand dangled from

his arm. But instead of being content with one bag, he came back for another one, and he kept coming back. Everyone thought he was incredibly greedy, but no one really paid much attention to him.

When we had handed out all our bags, a different man from inside the homeless shelter came out. He asked if we had any more bags, because the man inside had stopped handing out bags. Then I realized that the man we thought was so greedy was the very man who had handed out those bags to others. I felt terrible that I had judged him so poorly.

I like what the Bible says in Deuteronomy 15:7-8: “When you happen on someone who’s in trouble or needs help among your people with whom you live in this land that God, your God, is giving you, don’t look the other way pretending you don’t see him. Don’t keep a tight grip on your purse. No. Look at him, open your purse, lend whatever and as much as he needs. Don’t count the cost” (The Message).

Ve.Z: Has anyone had an attitude adjustment while doing this project?

Christie: Last year was my first time working on this project, and at first it didn’t seem like that cool of a project, but I’ll have to say I learned a lot, especially about not judging others. At the “A Walk in Their Shoes” display, we heard a

few stories about homeless people. In one story, a girl and her grandmother were being stalked and had to leave their house right away. Because they didn’t have any money to relocate, they were forced to be homeless for a time. It showed me that homeless people don’t necessarily bring this upon themselves and that I was wrong to judge them so harshly—in fact, I was wrong to judge them at all.

Ve.Z: So what else have you learned?

Donavan: On the way to the homeless shelter I was nervous. I had never seen a homeless person

Ellen White Visionary for Kids | 9

10 | Ellen White Visionary for Kids10 | Ellen White Visionary for Kids

before. On TV and in the movies the homeless people beg you for money. But when I gave out the first gift bag, the homeless man was so happy he ran inside the shelter and told his friends! I now know that homeless people are people just like us who happen to need a home.

Brianna: I realized how often we take for granted all the everyday things we have, such as food, showers, clothes, a warm bed to sleep in each night, and most of all, a home. Most of the people we met don’t have anybody.

Christie: I learned about gratitude. These people were so happy and thankful to receive our gift bag, filled with practical things, which was probably their only Christmas present.

Ivan: I learned that there are about 100 million homeless people worldwide.1 In the United States, in a given year, 3.5 million people are homeless and 1.3 million of them are children.2 Instead of judging these people, let’s lend a hand to them whenever we can.

2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homelessness_in_the_United_States

Ve.Z: Does anyone have any closing thoughts?

Hannah: There are many different ways to make a difference in your community. It is so worth it to help out!

Danielle: When we hand out the gift bags, I have tons of joy in my heart and I feel great!

Trent: It’s amazing to see that a few brown paper bags with some scarves, gloves, hats, and other small gifts could make people so happy. Think about what YOU could do for others in your life.

Brianna: I hope that if you get the chance to do something like this, you’ll take it! It is the best experience you can have. Maybe it will open your eyes just like it did for me.

“I tell you the truth, whatever

you did for one of the least of these brothers of

mine, you did for me.'”

From the Pencontinued from p. 5

In each was a golden shelf. I saw many of the saints go into the houses, take off their glittering crowns and lay them on the shelf, then go out into the field by the houses to do some gardening. But not like we garden here, no, no! A light of glory shone all around their heads, and they were continually shouting and offering praises to God.

I saw another field full of all kinds of flowers, and as I picked them, I cried out, “They will never fade.” Next I saw a field of tall grass, absolutely fabulous to look at; it was living green and had reflections of silver and gold, as it waved proudly to the glory of King Jesus. Then we entered a field full of all kinds of animals—the lion, the lamb, the leopard, and the wolf, all together in perfect harmony. We walked right through the middle of them, and they followed peaceably after us.

Then we entered a wood, not like the dark woods we have here; no, no; but light, and completely glorious; the branches of the trees moved back and forth, and we all cried out, “We will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods.” We passed through the woods, for we were on our way to Mount Zion.

As we were traveling along, we met a group who also were gazing at the total beauty of the place. I noticed a red border on their clothes; their crowns were brilliant; their robes

were pure white. As we greeted them, I asked Jesus who they were. He said they were martyrs that had been murdered because they stood up for Him. With them were little children—too many to count—they, too, had a hem of red on their garments.

Mount Zion was just before us, and on the mount was a fabulous temple, and around the temple were seven other mountains, on which grew roses and lilies. And I saw the little ones climb, or, if they chose, use their little wings and fly to the top of the mountains and pick the

never-fading flowers. There were all kinds of trees around the temple to beautify the place: the box, the pine, the fir, the oil, the myrtle, the pomegranate, and the fig tree bowed down with the weight of its ripe figs—these made the place absolutely marvelous. And as we were about to enter the holy temple, Jesus raised His lovely voice and said, “Only the 144,000 enter this place,” and we shouted, “Alleluia.”

This temple was supported by seven pillars, all of transparent gold, set with stunning pearls. The wonderful things I saw there I cannot describe. Oh, that I could talk in the language of Canaan, then could I tell a little

of the glory of the better world. There I saw tables of stone in which the names of the 144,000 were engraved in letters of gold. After we looked at the glory of the temple, we went out, and Jesus left us and went to the city. Soon we heard His lovely voice again, saying, “Come, My people, you have come out of great tribulation, and done My will; suffered for Me; come in to supper, for I will change clothes, and serve you.” We shouted, “Alleluia! glory!” and entered into the city.

I saw a table of pure silver; it was many miles in length, yet our

eyes could see the entire table. I saw the fruit of the tree of life, the manna, almonds, figs, pomegranates, grapes, and many other kinds of fruit. I asked Jesus to let me eat of the fruit. He said, “Not now. Those who eat of the fruit of this land go back to earth no more. But in a little while, if faithful, you shall both eat of the fruit of the tree of life and drink of the water of the fountain.” And He said, “You must go back to the

earth again and tell others what I have shown you.”

Then an angel bore me gently down to this dark world. Sometimes I think I can stay here no longer; all things of earth look so dreary. I feel very lonely here, for I have seen a better land. Oh, that I had wings like a dove, then would I fly away and be at rest!

After I came out of vision, everything looked changed; a gloom was spread over everything. Oh, how dark this world looked to me. I wept when I found myself here, and felt homesick. I had seen a better world.

Jerry was born on a farm in one of the Midwestern states of North America.

As a boy he learned to ride a horse and roamed all over the wide-open spaces he could see from his home.

He loved everything about the place. He loved the horses, the cows, the sheep, the dogs, and the chickens. He loved the rambling old farmhouse and the room that he called his own. And most of all he loved his father and mother. He gladly worked for them, in the house and in the fields.

Jerry hoped he would never have to leave the place. But one day he was called into the Army and sent off to fight in a foreign land.

Although he was sent overseas, Jerry’s heart was still at home. He longed for the horrible war to end so that he could return to his homeland and see his father and mother again! He often looked up at the stars as he was standing guard and dreamed of that happy time.

At last the day came, and he set off for home. After a long,

Almost Home

12 | Ellen White Visionary for Kids

Ellen White Visionary for Kids | 13

long journey he arrived at the village where he was to catch the bus that went by his farm. Alas, when he got to the bus station he discovered that the last bus had gone!

Poor Jerry! What could he do now?

All the stores and gas stations were closed. And to make things worse, it began to rain in torrents. Suddenly he spied an old car outside a garage. It was a wreck, with its windshield broken and one of its fenders off. But Jerry thought to himself, If I can wake the owner up and buy the car, then I’ll be able to drive home.

So he hammered on the door until somebody came. He bought the old car with the last of the money he had in his pockets. Then he started for home in the middle of the night.

Do you think he cared that it was raining hard?

Do you think he cared that he was soaked to the skin?

No, he was going home! Every turn of the wheels, every bump of the road, cried, “Home, home, home!”

When he arrived there and saw his dear parents again, his joy was too great for words. Yes, he was finally home!

We, too, are on our way to our heavenly home. Every boy and girl who loves God is going there. It is a beautiful and joyous home with “many mansions”—enough for everybody who wants to be there. And within its walls there will be no more pain, nor sickness, nor

death, nor tears. All the conflicts of this world will be forgotten.

We must not let anything hinder us from going there—neither trouble, nor hardship, nor suffering. Through storm and darkness, rain and hail, we must continue toward our goal.

This glorious home is not far away. Every morning finds us closer to it. Every evening we are a day’s march nearer to it. And everything that is happening in the world

today, everything we do to tell people of Jesus and His love, cries, “Home, home, home!”

Someday soon we shall be there, and Jesus will meet us with open arms and a loving welcome. What a homecoming that will be!

In 1846 Ellen White was shown in vision a panoramic

view of the planets, stars, and galaxies. Although she personally never wrote any details about this vision,

sea Captain Joseph Bates, who had spent a lifetime studying the stars to help sail his vessels, was present at the meeting. Rising to his feet, he stated that Ellen’s description of the ”opening heavens”

far surpassed any account he had ever read from any author.

Two years later in 1848, Ellen White described in vision the location of this ”open space.”

“Dark, heavy clouds came up and clashed against each other. The clouds parted and rolled back; then we could look up through the open space in Orion, where God’s voice came from. Heaven will come down through that ‘open space.’”

This picture of Orion’s nebula is one of the largest pictures ever assembled from individual images. Not until the Hubble Space Telescope was launched has such a spectacular color panorama of the center, the Orion nebula, been

available. For the first time since Ellen White’s vision we can catch a glimpse of the wonders God revealed to her well before space travel or space telescopes were imagined or ever dreamed of.

Ask Cindy!Who gets to go to heaven? I want to go, but I don’t

know for sure if I’m ready for Jesus to come. —Uncertain

Dear Uncertain,

You may have just asked life’s most important question. You can find the answer to your question in God’s Word, so take out your Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to give you spe-cial understanding for the texts listed below.

You can be sure of three things: (1) Jesus wants you to be in heaven (II Peter 3:9, 13-14). (2) His Word tells you exactly how to get there (Acts 4:12). (3) God wants you to be certain of your salvation (I John 5:13).

The moment you accept Jesus as your Savior, ask Him to forgive your sins. Believe that He has died in your place (Romans 6:23) and that His righteousness (holiness and right-doing) covers you (I John 1:7). At that moment God looks at you as though you had never sinned, as though you had never committed a wrong act! You are His child, and you have eternal life (John 3:16).

Every day we can pray something like this: “Lord Jesus, I’m sorry for my sins. Thank you for dying on the cross, taking the punishment that should have been mine. I love you so much. Please help me be more like You.” When we do this sincerely, all of heaven cel-ebrates our adoption into God’s family! (John 1:12) And for the rest of our lives, Jesus helps us become more like Him (Philippians 1:6).

Our salvation—our ticket to heaven, so to speak—is a gift from God. We can never, ever earn it (Ephesians 2:8-9). But we can spend the rest of our lives show-ing our thanks to Jesus’ amazing grace by living in grateful obedi-ence to His will (John 14:15).

Then, when Jesus returns to take His family to heaven, we will say with confidence, “This is my God. I have waited for Him, and He will save me” (Isaiah 25:9).

Not Peeking, Are You?

E llen White was born in 1827 in Maine, U.S.A. Seventh-day Adventists believe that God called her to be a prophet and gave her messages through dreams and visions, as foretold by

the Bible (Joel 2:28-29; Ephesians 4:11-13). Ellen White’s writings bring messages of hope that express the love of Jesus for every person. She proclaimed that the Ten Commandments are based on God’s great love and that God will help His children keep His commandments as a response to that love. Ellen White dedicated her entire life to serving others.

The editors of Visionary invite you to read Ellen White’s writings for yourself. You could start with Messiah, Steps to Jesus, or A Call to Stand Apart, all rewritten in youth-friendly language and available through adventistbookcenter.com. Discover, enjoy, and build a stronger friendship with Jesus!

Puzzle 1 God’s law exists for eternity and we will celebrate Sabbath in Heaven to remember God’s creation.

Puzzle 2 Even though we will be raised as a new creation, friends will recognize each other in heaven.

Puzzle 3 We will understand more and more why the cross of Christ is important to us and how it shows Jesus’ love for us.
