Annual Eggnog Afternoon Kicks Off the Holidays at Elmhurst
Elmhurst’s residents and their guests shared some eggnog and tasted a tempting array of holiday cookies and candies during the annual eggnog par-ty held in the beautiful Bloch Mansion dining room and parlor.
Gretchen Strauss, above left, welcomes Rachel Sinkavich to the eggnog party. At right, Mary Sacco and Marlene Cerullo, RA, eye the delectable cookie selection.

Santa Visits During
Our Holiday Party The Christmas party and luncheon were festive occasions. Santa visited and helped deliver holiday gifts to the residents. The beautiful snow scene of Elmhurst on pillows elicited delight-ed responses from the residents.
It was a festive holiday luncheon and party. In photos, left to right, are Paula Coats,RA, our holiday house decorator hugs Santa; Gladys Van Horne and Rose Saines admire their holiday Elmhurst pillow gifts; Barbara Myers, Martha Gosney, and Peggy Bates receive gifts; and Santa offering holiday greetings to Dorothy Sullivan, Mary Porterfield and Dolores Ambrister.
Naomi and Henry Hupp and Eleanor Peyton dressed for the party with holiday hats that had lights and music. Ho, ho, ho. At right, above, Bob Martin in Christmas green.
Happy New Year! We’re looking forward to another great year at Elmhurst where a full house is a wonderful thing.
I want to thank the board of directors for its support of our mission to provide the
very best senior living residence in the Wheeling area. Their advice is invalua-ble. I also want to send out a salute to the new Friends of Elmhurst. I expect great things to happen because of your sup-port now, and into the future.
I also want to acknowledge those who have supported our new transportation van fund, especially the Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation for its $15,000 matching grant.
As a note of caution, we urge all of our visitors to please be aware of our concern for our residents’ well-being when you visit. If you have the sniffles, or just aren’t feeling well, please refrain from visiting. We will not admit visitors who have signs of a cold or other illness. The health of our residents is paramount and we work daily to maintain the best environment possible for them. We know you understand our policy in that re-gard. Thank you.

Victorian Christmas Open House— Dozens and dozens of folks visited Elmhurst for the annual
holiday tour of our beautifully decorated house. Young and old enjoyed a chance to see our 22 trees and holiday décor in every corner of our residence. Santa and Mrs. Claus (Melinda from the kitchen staff) were on hand to delight the children. Several residents shared a peek at their own holiday decorations.

Residents Decorate The Residents’ Tree
The holiday season at Elmhurst starts a+er the last turkey leg has
been nibbled. Residents unwrapped ornaments and decorated
their own tree on the second floor in a fes.ve atmosphere. Many
new residents joined in the fun
for the first .me this year. Nib-
bles and beverages added ex-
tra cheer to this annual tradi-
.on.
Christmasme
Memories Bessie Higgins: We trimmed the tree the night before a+er my dad called Santa on the telephone and got permission to do so. Inevita-bly, the lights went on wrong and we had to do it all over again! A favorite present: A lile dog named Gip. New Year’s Eve: The annual dance at the Elks in down-town Wheeling.
Dolores Ambrister: As a five-year old during the Depression, Santa, played by a boarder in her par-ents’ home in Purcell, Oklahoma, came to visit. Oranges and Brazil nuts were treats. Decora.ons went up Christmas Eve.
Mary Eleanor Colvin: Christmas were all great—its her favorite season. New Year’s Eve: A group of good friends rang in the New Year at the home of Alice McCoy and her husband.
Margaret Wheat: At the age of 8 or 9, she recalls learning that there is no Santa, it was her dad!
Rose Saines: Remembering a gi+ of two pairs of pajamas made by a local woman for herself and her five siblings being raised by her widowed mother, and a baby doll that she gave to another child when her family moved away.
