When You Go with Gamburd, They are the Experts in Universal Design

People with traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MS, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s all have something in common. They all have the right to live in an environment that is designed to accommodate everyone. They should be able to enjoy safety, comfort, and mobility. All individuals deserve to be free of hindrances and without fear of injury. The best way to accomplish this is through universal design.

In the world of universal design, convenience is a characteristic that meets all accessibility standards. This means the planning and building of physical environments are done in such a way that people of all ages, sizes, abilities, and disabilities can benefit. Even though universal design is supporting use for those with disabilities, it truly benefits everyone!

The 7 Principles of Universal Design

#1: Equitable Use

The design must be advantageous for people of various abilities. This is truly the

heartbeat of accessibility. When designing or building for all users is at the forefront of

the mind, the interaction will be appealing for everyone.

#2: Flexibility in Use

This idea encourages a design that can be adaptable and customized. It’s all about

choice! When people can select preferences, they enjoy a sense of freedom and

independence. An example of this would be designing a door handle that is good for

right or left-handed individuals with or without good gripping abilities or range of motion.

#3: Simple and Intuitive Use

This means the design can be used so everyone no matter the level of experience or

current ability to concentrate. The idea is to reduce stress and not put people on

overload. Following this principle will reduce complications and allow for intuitive use.

#4: Perceptible Information

This principle indicates that the design can be interpreted by all users even those with

hearing or visual disabilities. There must be compatibility with the equipment that

individuals use.

#5: Tolerance for Error

Here we see the need for the design to allow for an error friendly environment. Minimize

the risks to eliminate the dangerous ramifications in the event of unintended actions. Fail

safe features should be included where vigilance is not required by the user.

#6: Low Physical Effort

A universal design should be accommodating comfortable use without taxing the user by

creating weakness or exhaustion. Repetitive actions and physical effort should be

minimal.

#7: Size and Space for Approach and Use

Page 3: Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 · Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 When You Go with Gamburd, They are the Experts in Universal Design People with traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MS,

This is important no matter the body size, posture, or mobility of the individual. The size

and space needs to accommodate all, so their approach, reach and manipulation are

not in jeopardy. There should be a clear line of sight for all users whether standing or

seated. Everyone should be able to reach the components no matter their size or ability

to grip. Space should always allow for those using wheelchairs or other devices.

Universal Design is the Way to Go!

It encourages us as a society to take into consideration all members of our communities. This type of design benefits those who choose to age in place and those with physical, mental, or cognitive challenges.

The seven principles are here to guide us in providing safe and easy access for all. So why not bring the experts in Universal Design to your home for an evaluation? It’s one call to one company.

Create Emergency Options for People with Physical, Sensory or Cognitive Challenges

In a society where many enter and exit their homes through their garages into their vehicles, years could pass before one ever meets their neighbor! In the name of convenience, we avoid conversations with the family next door because we’re too busy or just not sure we want to engage at all.

What has happened to us? Have we forgotten how to connect with one another?

Does it take an emergency situation like a fire, flood or earthquake for us to snap out of our bubble and take a look at who is living next door?

Page 5: Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 · Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 When You Go with Gamburd, They are the Experts in Universal Design People with traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MS,

People with physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges have a daunting task when it comes to navigating the threat of fire. Here are some tips to make sure everyone has the ability to be safe in the midst of an emergency situation.

We Must Plan Ahead

Click Here to Learn How to Prepare for Emergency Situations

Fire Safety Begins with Planning Ahead Emergencies become catastrophic when our communities can no longer provide the resources necessary for the safety of all. When there are multiple fires or aftershocks taking place, our fire and police departments will attend to the regions that are most impacted and where they can do the most good. It is not uncommon for certain areas to go for days without emergency assistance. First responders are trained to help the people who are in the most critical areas first. It is our responsibility to have a plan in place for our own households.

Understand Fire Safety and the Hazards in Your Area Make use of twitter for the emergency updates from your fire department, city, police, and highway patrol. Knowing what roads are closed will save time and frustration during an evacuation. Keep in mind that watching too much news may escalate fear. When people are already feeling panic and pressure, they don’t need more! The first responder sites provide updates from their perspective with your safety as top priority.

Create emergency options for transportation, adult day care and shelters. If your loved one is being assisted by a care giver, make sure to communicate the game plan to them. Are they supposed to take your loved one to a friend’s house, or to family members outside of the endangered area? How will they be transported there if you can’t get to them? Find your local area emergency sites before you need them (for example SantaClaritaEmergency.com). These sites will provide updates on shelters that have closed, new ones opening and those that are full. Have appropriate provisions in place for disabled individuals and those who do not speak English.

Page 7: Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 · Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 When You Go with Gamburd, They are the Experts in Universal Design People with traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MS,

Residential Care Communities If your loved one is living in a property like this under someone else’s care, familiarize yourself with their emergency procedures. Is the property a two-story complex? If there is only an elevator and the electricity is out, then what? Do they have a stairlift that can also run on battery? How will people be evacuated if they are in wheelchairs? Do they have a Vertical Platform Lift or Garaventa Stair Trac available that can also run on battery?

Out of State Contacts I remember in the dark hours of the 1994 Northridge earthquake we were unable to make calls out of LA County. And yet 10 minutes after the quake hit, my emergency contact in Chicago was able to call us! She was our contact base for all CA family members. Because we had this in place, we could be assured of one another’s safety even though the CA folks could not call each other. Having this in place may not make sense until you need it!

The 6 P’s People & Pets, Plastics, Pills, Papers, Photos – Make sure there is a plan for every person in the home. Have the following items in a safe spot with easy access if you need to leave quickly! Your plastic credit cards, ATM cards, cash, medications, important papers, phone numbers, personal computer, hard drives, flash drives and pictures or precious items that can’t be replaced. What are your important papers? Social security cards, ID cards, Insurance papers (in case you need to contact them), VA documents, medical cards and passports.

Those Who Need Special Assistance 70% of all rescues during an emergency situation are done by neighbors! Get to know your neighbors before you need them. All people caring for those with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities should heed an evacuation warning as an evacuation order and leave the area immediately. It could take additional time to get to safety, so moving quickly with a plan in place is better than leaving everything for the last minute in a frenzy of chaos.

Here are Some Emails We Received Recently that are Too Funny Not to Share!

We have been providing mobility solutions for families for over 18 years. Not even the most experienced professionals in our company thought of these unique problem-solving techniques! Our clients have shared some very colorful signs of creativity! Here is our disclaimer: The stair lifts we install are to be used only for the transporting of one person at a time to get them safely to the next level of their home.

Some of Our Customers Had Ideas of Their Own

Here are some emails we received recently that were just too good not to share:

Best wishes to all of you! I’m so happy with my stair chair! It runs so smoothly and quietly. It is a godsend! I even used it to carry my 22-pound turkey upstairs a couple of days ago!

Sarah – Pacific Grove, CA

Page 13: Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 · Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 When You Go with Gamburd, They are the Experts in Universal Design People with traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MS,

We have a confession to make. When your Gamburd consultant came to our home to measure for the stair lift, he asked who would be using the equipment. We knew he was asking to make sure the proper chair was ordered to accommodate the weight of that individual. We are both in great shape, so he figured we were just planning ahead, should one of us encounter health complications in the future. The truth of the matter is, we are tired of carrying our lazy dog up the stairs and just wanted to have a way to move her safely! We strap her in, so she is secure, and she actually seems to enjoy the ride! Thank you Gamburd!

Sergio, Steve & Sasha – Beverly Hills, CA

Thank you for my stair lift. It has helped me in so many ways. A month ago, my husband and I were in a tiff and frankly I wasn’t speaking to him. George hates it when I give him the silent treatment. Well, he got my heart to soften when I heard him send the stair lift remotely to the second level where I was brooding. I got curious when I did not hear him get off the lift, so I snuck a peek to see what he was doing. There on the lift was the most beautiful bouquet of flowers with a love note! If it wasn’t for Gamburd, Gorge would still be getting the silent treatment!

Margaret – Anaheim, CA

For 30 years my wife and I have had a date every Saturday night. We used to go dancing but when her body was no longer cooperating, we had to come up with a different plan. There are some days when she doesn’t feel so energetic, so I decided to use your lift in a new way! Instead of taking her out for a date night, I bring date night to her!

I set up a table for two on our second level with music playing and candles lit, I send up a tray with martinis, appetizers and eventually dinner all on our stair lift! And why not? It’s a smooth ride and nothing spills, plus it saves my back from carrying everything up the steps. Because of you, we have been able to enjoy life even when our bodies are not as young as they used to be!

Frank & Gerty – Los Angeles, CA

Here are 7 Questions You Need to Ask

Before a Hospital Discharge

It is our purpose to help people simplify their lives with accessibility solutions. Many times, individuals who need us don’t know where to start and yet, they are about to be processed for hospital discharge or leave a physical rehab center. Whether patients are calling for guidance themselves or a family member is reaching out, here are seven helpful tips one should address before hospital discharge.

1. What Is My Diagnosis? There are reasons people land in the hospital, so what got you there? Was it a fall, a needed surgery, an accident or disease? What are your limitations? Is the recovery time expected to be weeks or months?

2. What Is My Prognosis?

Page 16: Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 · Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 When You Go with Gamburd, They are the Experts in Universal Design People with traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MS,

Where are we headed from here? The needs of a person healing from knee surgery is going to be very different than a patient with ALS. Ask your doctor what to expect for the next 6 months, 12 months, 3 years etc. Getting the answer to this question alone will save you time and money!

3. What Potential Surprises or Complications May Arise? Is my mobility expected to change for the better or worse? We always hope for the best, but when it comes to making financial decisions for equipment we need in the home, we should look at the full picture and prepare for decline rather than hope it never happens.

4. Does My Hospital Discharge Plan Include a Home Accessibility Assessment? Some hospitals will refer a professional who will come to assess the home. Other healthcare facilities expect the family to seek this out on their own. Some charge a fee to do a walk through and highlight trouble spots in the house, so be sure to ask!

5. What Should I Steer Clear From? Are there certain activities I should not do? Should I attempt to be walking up and down stairs or would that be a bad idea? What foods or medications should be avoided?

6. What Home Modifications Are Needed? There may be areas of concern that the family has not thought about upon hospital discharge, including (but not limited to):

Page 17: Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 · Email Autoresponders Sample # 1 When You Go with Gamburd, They are the Experts in Universal Design People with traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MS,

o Is the patient coming home in a wheelchair? o Are there steps to get into the house? o Do we need a threshold ramp? o Will the wheelchair fit through the front door, or does it need to be

widened? o What about bathing? Do you need a barrier free shower, tub cut or

a ShowerBuddy system to help?

7. What Medical Equipment Is Needed? Many families feel unprepared and just don’t know which questions to ask upon hospital discharge! What mobility aids and equipment are available, and how can it help our situation? Is it better for us to rent or purchase?

When families contact Gamburd Inc., they will reach a professional trained to offer solutions. The mobility aids and equipment we offer will enhance the independence of the patient. We not only provide home modifications, but we do all the installations in-house! That is unusual – most companies outsource the work. We do not outsource anything. We provide, install, and service the equipment, so it’s basically one call to one company.
