PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

Ave + Maria! Habits to Foster

Mary is the model of all the Saints and the perfect disciple of Jesus. Here are habits practiced by the Saints that can help us to follow Our Lord and Lady more closely this Advent. Three will appear is this bulletin and four in the next. Cultivate Humility The saints were very careful not to think more highly of themselves than they should. They take seriously Jesus’ warning that, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalt-ed,” (Matthew 23:12). Humility is nothing more than an accurate self-assessment, an awareness of oneself as one really is. And surely anyone seeing himself for what he really is, must be truly humble. We shun humili-ty. And yet saint after saint has embraced it. Without humility we are unable to be a disciple of Jesus. Why? Because humility enables us to acknowledge that we need Him. Pride, causes us to ignore God’s guidance, discount His love, and reject the life He offers us. Strive for Obedience This habit naturally flows from the first. Only if we are humble can we hope to be obedient. Only the hum-ble can let go of what they might want or prefer in order to do what God may want or prefer. The saints were obedient. They wanted above all else to do what God wanted them to do. Do we have that same desire? So often we come across people who half-heartedly want to do what God wants them to do. If it is difficult or unpopular, they do not follow through with it. This is called “Cafeteria Christianity.” Picking the things you agree with and ignoring what you do not, does not reflect humility and obedience. St. Paul says this results in shipwreck of faith, (1 Tim 1:19). Set Firm Priorities For the Saints their relationship with God was a priority. They did not wait until they had time to pray; they made time to pray. They were not easily swayed by their moods or by other people. Nothing would make them surrender their relationship with God. But how easily we are swayed. How easily we rationalize spir-itual laziness. After encouraging us not to worry Jesus says, “God will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern,” (Matthew 6:33). In a Berlin art gallery there is a painting by German painter Adolf Menzel. It is only partially finished. He intended to show Fredrick the Great speaking with some of his generals. So Menzel painted the generals and the background and left the king until last. He put an outline of Fredrick in charcoal in the picture, but he died prior to finishing the painting. Many Christians come to the end of their lives without ever having put Christ into his proper place. The saints remind us to do more than pencil our Lord into our lives, allow him to have the seat of honor from the beginning.

CatechesisoftheGoodShepherdBethShank@[email protected] Prophecy of Mother Doctrinal Content: • A prophet is one who listens to God, speaks His message, and waits for God’s action • The purest figure among holy women is Mary, who kept alive the hope of Israel’s salvation • The Church sees here the fulfillment of the Divine promise given through the Prophet Isaiah:

“Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” • Jesus/Emmanuel means: God is with us. Direct Aim: To proclaim the Prophecy of the Mother and ponder the identity of the woman and her son who is named Emmanuel

“The young wom-an, pregnant and about to bear a

son, shall name him Emmanuel.”

Isaiah 7:14

A very special thank you to all of those who helped make our Evening of Lessons and Carols possible especially those who helped make the beautiful costumes,

to our Lectors, the members of the St. Gregory Chamber Choir, and to all the children of our Faith Formation program and their families.

“And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth,

for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.” Luke 1:14-15

Evangelio Mt 11, 2-11
