PROJECT PROFILE
EXPRESSWAY MONITORING AND ADVISORY SYSTEM FOR SINGAPORE
CUSTOMER
Land Transport Authority of Singapore
GENERAL
The Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS) is a state of the art electronic traffic management solution to help in the management of traffic incidents along the expressways. As a result, motorists can now look forward to improvement of road safety, traffic fluidity and further reduction of traffic accidents.
The EMAS operates based on the principles of Detection, Verification and Control. The Central Control System (CCS) of the EMAS is responsible to link up the Detection, Surveillance, Traffic Information and Control System, the emergency telephone sub-systems to perform the functionality of:
Traffic data acquisition, computation and displaying real-time traffic trends.
Incident detection algorithms using complex to generate traffic alerts.
Perform travel time calculation. Perform traffic data gathering for analysis. Generate response plans for Traffic Police,
Television Corporation of Singapore, Radio Corporation of Singapore and Glide Control Centre etc.
Monitor operational status of all on-site and Tunnel Control and management equipment.
Hosting of traffic information on the Internet for the general public.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION The heart of the Expressway and Monitoring System is the Central Computer System located in the Operation Control Centre in River Valley. It is configured as a Client-Server Architecture. The CCS functions both as a server to its operator workstations and as a client to the Front End Logical Server of the various sub-Systems. A high speed backbone 100 base Ethernet network provides the interconnection infrastructure for the CCS Servers, CCS Workstations, Front End Logical Servers (FELS), Print Servers, Projection Screen Servers etc.
The CCS system operates on a UNIX operating platform, the servers are configured for redundancy to increase the System Availability. The configuration of redundancy allow for the fail-over of processes from the Main CCS Server to the Backup CCS Server. The Client Server Architecture of the CCS system also allows interconnection of services through TCP/IP, all messages interchange between the various Front End Logical Servers are through these TCP/IP connections. The various sub-systems are interfaced to the CCS through its respective FELS. These are as follows: Detection Sub-System
Surveillance Sub-System Traffic Information and Control
System Emergency Telephone System Tunnel Management System Internet Web Interface Such interfaces allow the realization of an Advanced Expressway Traffic Management System using the parameters of Detection, Verification, Control and Management.
