WhatisCBS?

TheITUGlobalICTCapacityBuildingSymposium(CBS)isthemainglobaleventforcapacitydevelopmentin the field of information and communication technology (ICT). The Symposium brings togetherstakeholders from across the world to discuss trends and developments in the sector and theirimplicationsforhumanandinstitutionalcapacitybuilding.CBSinitiallyfocusedonlyonmattersrelatedtohumanresourcesandthuswastargetedmainlytohumanresourcespractitioners.Ithassincebroadeneditsscopetoembracehumanandinstitutionalcapacitybuilding,drawingonaglobalnetworkofexpertisefromdifferentregionsandstakeholders.

CBS-2016Symposiumtheme:“Embracingcapacitybuildingopportunitiesinthedigitalera”

GloballeadershaveadoptedtheSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs)assuccessortotheMillenniumDevelopment Goals (MDGs). These goals are to be achieved at a time of major digital technologytransformationthatwillimpactthewaypeopleliveandsocietiesoperate.Emergingtechnologiessuchasthe Internet of Things (IoT) are increasingly becoming a reality. The advent of smart cities and smartsocieties,aswellasthegrowthofbigdata,requiredifferentsetsofknowledgeandskillsacrossallsectionsofsociety.Governments,industry,universitiesandotherhighereducationinstitutionsneedtoinvestin,anddeveloparangeofICTskills,whichwillnotonlyenableincreasedparticipationintheeconomy,butwillensurethecreationofdigitalcitizensforadigitalsociety.

Participants

CBS attracts participants from countries worldwide, as well as from regional and internationalorganisations. Panellists include high-level officials such asMinisters, Director-Generals of RegulatoryAuthorities, heads of UN Organisations, CEOs of private sector companies, representatives fromUniversitiesandresearchinstitutionsandotherexpertsinICTcapacitybuilding.SeveralthoughtleadersfromtheacademiccommunityareexpectedtomakepresentationsattheSymposium.

Outcomes

The outcomes of the Symposium will provide strategic guidance to the national and internationalcommunity, including ITU,on capacity building in the fieldof ICT, andon strengthening collaborationamongtheglobalICTcapacitybuildingcommunity.ThiswilldirectlycontributetotheachievementoftheSDGs across all development sectors. For universities and other training providers, the SymposiumprovidesaforumtogaugetheneedsofthemarketintermsoftrainingandcapacitybuildinginthefieldofICT,andhelpsthemshapetheirtraininganddeliveryprogrammes.
