Assignment 2 due this Sun. 11/10 – This is not a read and react; Describe each section in detail along with your own thoughts and analyses (e.g. describing a network)
Assignment 2 YouTube Record Video Introduction and Conclusion
Narrate PowerPoint presenting major findings using the outline
Good presenting is sharing what you have learned with us

Readings this week – School library web usability; Emerging Trends in public libraries
What are emerging technologies and how do I keep up?
User-centered Design What is the goal of your system or service?
How can you make the experience more effective, efficient, and satisfying for your users? Technology is often a tool that helps with this.
1. You must understand clearly what your users and you and your organization are trying to accomplish.
2. You must understand their performance environment and how they are trying to accomplish their goals – what will be easiest for them?
What about “take it or leave it?”
Why do we need to work this hard to make it easy on people?
Building Usable Systems
Emerging technologies are ways to make things better…. For you or for your users?
For libraries Big metropolitan public libraries are trying to cut costs by
going digital.
Academic libraries – Less about books and more about databases, meeting areas (information commons), digital literacy
School libraries – Literacy and access, instructional technology and tech. support, instructional literacy (or teaching), teacher supplements
Logic Models and Strategic Plans
Long-term outcomes (After six months, impact still there or just realized)
Short-term outcomes (Direct impact on your students/patrons)
Outputs (Preliminary numbers that suggest you are getting there)
Activities (Actual activities to get there)
Inputs (Resources necessary to get there)
Goal (High quality service)

Goal (High quality service)
• Random sample of employment seminar attendees shows 90% employed.
• Patron satisfaction at 95%; Circulation increased by 5%
• 15 signs created; two usability tests; one focus group; technology plan created
• Signs created for all areas of the library; usability testing and user groups. Technology management plan created.
• Good signage, appropriate technology, quality information resources
• Access to quality information services (strategic goal)
Strategic Plan
1. Access to quality information services (strategic goal)
a. Good signage, appropriate technology, quality information resources
1) Signs created for all areas of the library; usability testing and user groups.
2) Create Technology management plan
• 15 signs created; two usability tests; one focus group; technology plan created
• Technology plan created
Strategic Planning as Consensus Builder
Remember TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) – people have to see utility and ease-of-use.
Strategic Planning generates dialogue and consensus on primary goals
Let’s take a look at an example.
Emerging Technologies will change….
Libraries Integrated Library Systems (ILS)
Information commons
Virtual reference
Check-in/check-out
Automation of all processes (as much as possible)
Place to meet, place to become educated, place to use technology, place for children and families
School libraries and tech facilitators Tech support
Curriculum design and supplements
Professional development
Literacy and multi-media around teaching process (teaching, grading, communicating, etc.)
