1 Emigration of Family Ancestors Scotland to Lanark County, Ontario in the Early 1820’s By Jay Mackie, 2017 Introduction P.H. (Peter Howard) Mackie’s paternal grandparents were Thomas Mackie and Jane Snedden. Their third child, James Mackie, was P.H.’s father. Thomas and Jane emigrated from Scotland to Eastern Canada separately by sailing ships at different times. Both migrated further inland to Lanark County in a region that was then named “Upper Canada,” now part of present day Ontario. The driving force for immigration to this area of Canada was free land grants, available to both ex-military and civilians of the British Crown. Information on Thomas Mackie’s earlier life and ancestry in Scotland is fragmented, as is discussed in the topic paper, Search for Thomas Mackie Scottish Roots. It is believed that he was from or near Linlithgowshire just west of Edinburgh. His exact path, port of arrival, and time of arrival in Canada is not known. But from land grant records he settled into farming in Beckwith Township, Ontario in May 1821. The history of Jane Snedden’s emigration from Scotland and immigration into “Upper Canada” is well known from two sources. The first source, The Snedden Saga, describes Snedden family life in Scotland, and the particulars of Jane and close family members’ move from Scotland to Upper Canada. The second source is a 36 page booklet published by a Scot, John McDonald, booklet cover shown on the next page. (This style booklet was very popular in Great Britain for citizens to read and evaluate options for immigration to the New World). John McDonald was in the same group of four sailing ships containing 1,800 Scottish immigrants traveling together from Scotland to Quebec City in 1821. A majority of the arriving passengers, including the journalist John McDonald, traveled up the St. Lawrence River by steamship, then continued further upriver in flat bottom boats to Prescott, Ontario by flat-bottom boat. Then the party traveled overland from Brockville by primitive road to the recently founded Lanark County, Ontario. Once in Lanark County, families obtained rights to land from the Crown.
