Graduate studiesEmily Carr’s graduate degree programs offer you an opportunity to expand your practice and under-standing of art, media + design in contemporary and future contexts.

Drawing upon your previous knowledge and experience, our approach to critical making actively integrates praxis with research, and theoretical and experimental frameworks. Our internationally recognized and award-winning faculty will lead you to explore, challenge and expand your work in a studio rich environment. You will engage in independent and collaborative advanced-level research, studio practice, prototyping, co-creation methods, and critical studies.

While our programs centre on studio practice, you will develop a rigorous critical framework in order to synthesize research and theory enabling you to recognize and develop new ideas to express and manifest.

You will benefit from Emily Carr’s focused Research and Industry Office and the Intersections Digital Studios, hubs for strategic research innovation that build industry alliances and offer customized internships.

MASTER OF APPLIED ARTS – VISUAL OR MEDIA ART Available as a 2-year full-time program, or a 3 year low-residency format

The Master of Applied Arts (MAA) at Emily Carr is a program for professional creators who take risks, think unconventionally, foster change and contribute to the global cultural economy.

Courses in studio practice, research and critical theory integrate methodologies that span diverse art forms and learning models.

We invite visual and media artists to explore, challenge and expand their creative knowledge in exchange with core faculty who are leading artists and scholars in their fields.

Program DeliveryThe MAA program is available as a two-year, full-time program on our campus in Vancouver, or may be completed in a flexible low-residency 28-month format. The low-residency model is structured around three consecutive intensive summer residency periods in Vancouver, with innovative and interactive online study periods between residencies that build and expand the experiences of each summer.

MASTER OF DESIGN – RETHINK, RENEW, REDESIGN

Emily Carr’s Master of Design (MDes) is a two-year, full-time, research-oriented, interdisciplinary degree for creative professionals at the forefront of design.

As an MDes student you will have the opportunity to situate your own research within a range of established and emerging design fields including:

I was interested in the type of ‘research through process’ that was happening in the MDes program at Emily Carr, specifically between legacy materials and digital manufacturing. I came from a traditional glassblowing practice that was using a very limited set of techniques and methods. I brought that practice into the Material Matters Lab and started to use digital ways of making to explore new expressive potential.

Learning at Emily Carr takes place inside and beyond the classroom. Hands-on studio time and applied research is an everyday part of the experience here.

STUDIO SPACE + EQUIPMENT All students have shared or dedicated workshop space with late-night and weekend hours, allowing for collaboration and access to equipment no matter when inspiration strikes.

ABORIGINAL STUDENT RESOURCESEmily Carr’s Aboriginal Programs Office fosters learning experiences and supports for all students, faculty and staff. Our interdisciplinary Aboriginal curriculum encompasses both the traditional and contemporary artistic expressions of Aboriginal peoples, and is a valuable resource for students to access traditional materials and supplies. Courses include studio practice, art history, critical theory and industrial application.

We engage our local community by providing free intergenerational urban access and teen outreach programs, and continue to expand our role in bridging Aboriginal art, culture and education in rural areas across BC.

Coming to Emily Carr was an important step in my practice. I have worked collaboratively with various artists in Vancouver but I really wanted to spend time working on my own projects and to learn to articulate what I am doing in my practice in a succinct way. It has been wonderful to be in a small cohort and be exposed to new and challenging ways of making.

Awards, research + teachingEmily Carr supports graduate students with awards, research assistantships and teaching fellowship opportunities.

SCHOLARSHIPS + AWARDSWe strive to attract the best-qualified applicants and to recognize, with entrance scholarships, those presenting high academic achievement and artistic potential. A limited number of graduate entrance scholarships are offered as you begin your studies at the University. You do not need to apply directly for these scholarships - the University will select students based on their academic achievements and through the portfolio assessment process.

The University also awards scholarships and bursaries as you continue your program, designed to recognize ongoing scholarly development and excellence, as well as financial need.

RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS + TEACHING FELLOWSHIPSProfessional development is an important component of graduate studies at Emily Carr.

Research Assistantships and Teaching Fellowships provide valuable professional experience to complement your studies. Research Assistants may work as part of a team on a larger research initiative.

Master of Applied Arts and Low Residency Master of Applied Arts Your portfolio should reflect your understanding of the interdisciplinary emergent forms of cultural production and demonstrate how you plan to situate your research to foster change and contribute to the global cultural community.

Applicants are required to submit 18–20 examples of their work. Upload and submit your art portfolio and statement of intent online through the University’s SlideRoom portal. All prospective students must submit a portfolio by February 1, 2016.

Emily Carr’s international student population makes up nearly 20% of our student body. We offer services to facilitate success in learning and creative processes and to support you in your adjustment to the Canadian education experience. Thinking and making are inseparable. In order to make ideas tangible and real the thought behind a designer’s ideas must be solid and as thoroughly researched as possible. The design faculty at Emily Carr taught me that critical thinking is just as important as execution. I am happy to be working full-time at a firm as well- respected, rigorous, and competitive as IDEO straight out of school.

GRADUATE STUDIES

CRITICAL MAKINGThe Studio for Critical Making is a research facility that explores how humanities-based modes of critical inquiry—like the arts and ethics —can be directly applied to building more engaging product concepts and information technologies. The lab works to replace the traditional engineering goals of efficiency, speed or usability with more complex cultural, social and human-oriented values. The end result is technology that is more culturally relevant, socially engaged and personalized.

The facility is directed by Dr. Garnet Hertz, Canada Research Chair in Design and Media Arts.

HEALTH DESIGN LAB The Health Design Lab provides design opportunities to students and faculty through collaborative partnerships that apply solution-focused, human- centered research methodologies to complex problems in health care. Students have designed hundreds of solutions with partners, ranging from assistive devices and communication tools, mobile platforms and wheel chair designs, to recommendations for structural and systemic changes.

MATERIAL MATTERSMaterial Matters supports the community of people and enterprise interested in 3D printing, emergent technology, media, programming, manufacturing, design and creative innovation. Material Matters has developed as a meeting point—an intersection of groups that catalyzes disciplines, students and faculties within Emily Carr University of Art + Design. We work with external partners who may be industry-based, NGOs, non-profit, or community groups.

STUDIO FOR EXTENSIVE AESTHETICS The Studio for Extensive Aesthetics produces projects and artistic research on the aesthetic implications of technological innovation. The work is transdisciplinary in nature, operating through artistic and computational means. Our students engage with a network of international theorists and practitioners through projects, from screen-based work to urban-scale installations.

The studio is led by Amber Frid-Jimenez, Canada Research Chair in Art + Design Technology.

STEREOSCOPIC 3D (S3D) CENTREOur applied research programs and training activities focus on creative applications made possible by experimenting with S3D and Advanced Imaging (4K, virtual reality, High Dynamic Range, High Frame Rate) production technologies and methods. With the support of our partners and students, we aim to teach, train and discover the aesthetic possibilities of these areas and become world leaders in creative technology exploration.

LIVING LABSLiving Labs develops projects and partnerships that use art and design as a mechanism for innovation and commu-nity building. Living Labs works to bring together students and faculty with entrepreneurs and organizations from the business, technology, and startup communities. It aims to bridge internal and external communities through applied research partnerships, curricula and training; run workshops and partnered studios; operate as a platform to connect researchers in social innovation, art and design, technology and business; support early stage ventures from the Emily Carr communi-ty; and investigate the outcomes and structures that are unique to social and creative ventures.

Emily Carr leads the country in the contributions we make to research in studio-based art, design and media.

RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPSEmily Carr offers many opportunities for graduate students to engage in ongoing research projects at the University during their studies through funded Research Assistantships (RA). Ideally, your own research will be aligned to the work you undertake as a research assistant. Research assistants support activities such as fieldwork, literature review, co-creation, production work, design and writing for dissemination, and event planning.

We are committed to providing opportunities to graduate students through practice-based research, and collaborative partnerships that apply solution-focused, human-centered research methodologies to complex problems, and sustainable models for collaborative, applied research.

Our Research and Industry Office and the Intersections Digital Studios are hubs for strategic research innovation that build on faculty expertise and industry alliances, and offer funded research opportunities.

The Research Centres at Emily Carr are communities of academic researchers with a common purpose. They focus on areas of research that involve faculty from different disciplines and are often supported by grants from NSERC and SSHRC. The Research Centres are able to collaboratively work towards innovation in areas where Emily Carr is making significant national and international contributions.
