We are a community of creative and dedicated people who are passionate about the arts in all their many forms. We are profoundly committed to the idea that beauty, aesthetics, careful and sensitive design, and creativity, are essential parts of our lives, and have the power to change the world, both now and in the future.

We get to know each other as individual artists and creators.

We organize, amplify and transform creativity into an infinite spectrum of possibilities.

Our DNA is steeped in innovation and change. In the 1960’s we established one of the earliest programs in Animation in Canada. In the late 1960’s we built an intermedia program that was later copied all over the world. At that time, many of our students learned about the arts from people like Jack Shadbolt and Gordon Smith. It is not an accident that one of our most famous graduates is Douglas Coupland, or that on the other side of the spectrum, the Art Director for Vanity Fair, Chris Dixon, is an Emily Carr graduate.

Our grads are working at Facebook, Google, and Apple. We have won more Canadian painting competitions than any of the art and design schools in Canada. Our Filmmakers and Animators regularly win awards and most recently we were honored to be designated as the 11th most important school in Design in the world.

Your portfolio is intended to showcase your best and most recent work and reflect your interest in exploring and experimenting with different art materials to express your ideas. The portfolio is a collection of work and ideas demonstrating your creative development. Your creativity, knowledge, interests, and skills are represented. The portfolio you prepare may take a variety of forms. Its primary goal is to show us how you communicate ideas and make use of research processes and materials.

Emily Carr’s Aboriginal Programs Office fosters learning experiences and support for all students, faculty and staff.

Our Aboriginal Gathering Place (AGP) provides a culturally welcoming environment to enhance and nurture the educational, cultural and physical needs of our Aboriginal learners.

Our interdisciplinary Aboriginal curriculum encom-passes both the traditional and contemporary artistic

expressions of Aboriginal peoples, and is a valuable resource for students to access traditional materials and supplies. Courses include studio practice, art history, critical theory and industrial application.

Partnership profile EMILY @GROW

Emily@Grow is a partnership between Emily Carr’s Social + Interactive Media (SIM) Centre and Vancouver-based startup accelerator GrowLab. GrowLab has an unparalleled reputation for bringing together the best and brightest entrepreneurs in the country and connecting them with their global network of top tier investors, mentors and partners. In this exciting initiative, Emily Carr designers are paired with an early-stage startup to develop their product for launch. Students learn about what’s involved with starting a business, and how to connect design to the fast-paced world of startups. In addition to working with the companies, the designers convene in a weekly studio setting where they share ideas and are mentored on the principles of interaction design by lead faculty Haig Armen. The project includes exclusive opportunities to connect with the Vancouver startup community and has previously involved

participation in special workshops, conferences, and events.

Several alumni of the Emily @ Grow program have been hired by their companies, while others have been inspired to start their own. Startups are increasingly recognizing the impact and value of design. Designers with strong front-end programming skills are highly valued in the internet space. Through this project we are building the relationships and skills that allow our students to become the next generation of visionaries, influencers, and leaders.

ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPSTo attract the best-qualified applicants, Emily Carr University awards a limited number of entrance scholarships to new domestic and international students who show high academic achievement and creative potential. You do not need to apply directly for these scholarships — the University will select students based on the strength of their application package.
