We know that we are having a very busy year.

that far from home. Remember there are all kinds

of activities for the youth, teens and adults. If you

are planning to go, the committee is always looking

for help. Even a couple hours would help. Make

sure you read your Camping Today as all the

Campvention information is in there. The

Campvention is a place to find old friends and

surely make new ones.

We would like to thank Herb and Marie Pe-

tersen for their many years of being National

Scholarship Directors. We know it took many

hours of completing paperwork, judging essays,

(Continued from page 1) getting donations and keeping track of it all. Seems

like only yesterday when they took over but it was

actually 14 years. Good luck to the new directors

Carl and Lynda Wood of Ontario.

Last but not least, I would like to announce

that Debbie Swanson from Fiddlers Green has been

appointed as Western District Director. Congratula-

And now a word from: By the time you read this it will finally be

SPRING and Spring State will be right around the

corner. We can’t wait to see our NYSA friends.

Let’s have lots of conservation posters. Don’t for-

get that the contest is for young and old (young at

heart).

I’m sure that all of you remember our talks

on “not moving firewood” and “invasive bugs”; so

let us talk about a different part of conservation.

Reuse is my favorite of the three “R”s (reduce, re-

use, recycle). Today what I want to talk about are

books. I know that there are these lovely places

called libraries where one can borrow a book, but I

can’t seem to stop myself from buying paperbacks.

But after reading them a couple of times then what?

In the past, I have donated them to charity garage

sales. I’m sure most of you have found at various

campgrounds a place for book exchanges. What I

propose is a media exchange at Spring State. Mov-

ies, books, music, the idea is simple take one leave

one. If you like this idea I hope to do this at Na-

tional.

You can also donate these items to senior

centers, hospitals and nursing homes. Please be

sure to call first. I would love to hear your sugges-

tions on reusing, just drop me a line at

[email protected] or let me (Carol) know at

the State campout.

There will be a conservation lecture/

program each day at the national Campvention.

Confirmed speakers are: Mary Sissock, University

of Vermont Cooperative Extension; Rebecca

Phelps, Vermont Forest, Parks, and Recreation will

do Project Learning Tree programs with both the

youth and adults on Tuesday; and I (Mike) will be

hosting a Tree Identification walk on the grounds

Thursday afternoon. I am still trying to get a maple

producer to do a program, so stay tuned!

And the Oscar Goes To……. Western District will be hosting the Spring

State Campout this year. Our theme is: And the

Oscar Goes To…. We will be having an Oscar

party and you’re all invited. This is the time to

dress in your “camping finest” and act like movie

royalty. Walk the red carpet, have the paparazzi

take your picture and ask “who are you wearing”.

Don’t forget the “bling” so you can shine like a real

star. See your name on the “wall of fame”.

Friday night we will have a move with pop-

corn & soda. Saturday’s schedule starts with

breakfast, afternoon we’ll have our contests and

Saturday night will be our Oscar Party.

Sunday’s schedule includes a picnic lunch,

campvention/northeast regional meetings, games,

etc.

Monday we will send you off with a conti-

nental breakfast.

We hope to see you all at the NYSA Spring

State Campout.

MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT July 7-11, 2014

by DeWayne Johnston, Publicity

Pleasant thoughts come to mind when thinking of Vermont – quaint old New England towns, beautiful

lakes and mountains, fall foliage, winter skiing, summer fairs, dairy farms, maple syrup, cheese, ice cream,

covered bridges, and the song, “Moonlight in Vermont.”

The theme for FCRV’s 54th annual Campvention will be “Moonlight in Vermont”. The location is the

Champlain Valley Exposition Center at Essex Junction, 5 miles from Burlington on rt. 15 in Northwest

Vermont close to Lake Champlain. Burlington is a city of about 211,000 and is home to IBM’s Micro-

electronics Division and employs 7,000 people. Essex Junction is a small town of about 8,500.

The Exposition Center has hosted RV rallies for several organizations and there are lots of buildings and

rooms for activities as well as grassy areas for games. Each site will have 30 amp electric and water. Pump-

ing will be available for $25. Wi-fi is available. The stage is indoors and the teen center has a

kitchen. There will be a food vendor on grounds. A strip mall adjoins the grounds with stores, fast food

restaurants, VFW, and a laundry. A circus will be on one end of the fairgrounds and can be attended. Early

days are Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5 with opening ceremonies on Monday, July 7 and activities con-

cluding Friday, July 11, vacating grounds Saturday. There will be a church service on Sunday morning,

July 6th.

The fee schedule has changed a bit as follows. The regular camp fee including water and electric will be

$275. The weekly fee for an additional family in the same unit will be $165.00. A 2 day camp pass meaning

you may come on grounds with your camping unit for 2 consecutive days is $140.00. A single day program

pass to attend activities but not stay overnight in any unit is $35.00 for each day.

The Campvention will feature professional entertainment, the Miss FCRV Pageant, FCRV Awards, door

prizes, hospitalities, seminars, crafts, a commercial area, youth, teen and adult activities centers, games /

sports, the FCRV Parade and more.

There are many places to visit on your way to or from Campvention, but in the immediate area you might

enjoy the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Shelburne Farms, Museum, and Winery, Northern Lights

Boat Cruise, Echo Lake Aquarium and Science Center, Vermont Teddy Bears, and Danforth Pewter

Works. A few hours away are Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory at Waterbury, Goodrich Maple Farm in

Cabot, and Cabot Creamery & Cheese Factory, Cabot.

The Address for the location of Campvention 2014 is Champlain Valley Expo Center, 105 Pearl Street, Es-

sex Junction, Vermont 05453. 2014 is a 6 night, five day rally with Sunday, July 6 included in the registra-

tion price. July 4th and 5th are available as early days at $25 per night. A church service will be held Sunday

morning and all other activities begin Monday, July 7th and conclude Friday, July 11th. The Miss FCRV

Pageant will be Wednesday evening.

HUDSON VALLEY DISTRICT

Eight members of the Hudson Valley District at-

tended the February meeting of the Snowbird Chap-

ter on Feb. 19, 2014 in Bartow, Fl. There were a to-

tal of 45 members present. After a delicious meal, a

meeting was held and new officers elected. Hudson

Valley District's Lloyd Humphrey was elected presi-

dent.

There are elections on the National level taking

place during March/April. Look for information in

the March, 2014 issue of Camping Today.

The NYSA Board Meeting is March 22, 2014 in

Endicott, New York.

Remember to pre-register for a chance for free

registration for FCRV's 54th annual Campvention in

Essex Junction, Vermont July 7-11.

Hudson Valley District members must be pa-

tiently waiting for the snowy, winter weather to dis-

appear so they can plan to attend our District camp-

out May 16-18 hosted by the Shongum Shockers at

the Shongum Shockers Campground. Helderberg

Hilltoppers will provide Friday night hospitality.

As I'm writing this article for ESN, another polar

vortex storm is about to hit the Northeast again.

Enough is enough. Will this winter ever end?

See you in the Spring.

Another camping season quickly approaches!

Join us for our annual District/Conservation

Cleanup of Cedar Point State Park May 2-4. Con-

tact Ralph Hanley (315) 676-7282 if you would

like to join us for this awesome season opener. We

have use of the old stone building with 2 fireplaces.

We are right on the point and can see the ships

passing by. Bring a can of soup for the lunch pot,

there will be delicious hot dogs available at cost,

and Saturday night we gather for a pot luck dinner.

Bring any games you might like to play with oth-

ers. You can camp for free in exchange for helping

out. Whether it is stirring the pot to feed the manual

laborers or helping pick up sticks from the lawn.

Really there is something helpful anyone can do….

Come join us… you’ll be glad you did. This invita-

tion goes out to all FCRV members!!

Please show your support for our very own Kerri

good results! School con-

tinues to go well. I am

summer in Vermont.

Please come support me

Miss New York

FINGER LAKES DISTRICT

Never have so many members been so

ready for spring! Think we all are ready to turn in

our heavy coats and start complaining about being

too warm!

The FLD is looking forward to camping at

the Kanona Fire Department grounds in May. This

is being hosted by the Schuylarks and we hope to

see everyone there. This chapter has only 3 fami-

lies but they have stepped up and I know they will

put on a great campout.

Our Fall campout is being planned now by

the PALS and will be held at the Almond Rod and

gun club in September. This is going to be some-

thing new, lots of different things planned and it

should be a good time.

Our district lost two good members within

the past few months: Janice Wheeler and Roger

Carpenter. Both members had attended many Na-

tional campouts and even more local events. Our

thoughts are with their families.

As with many districts, our membership is

dropping but we still have many willing hands so

we have some great campouts and good times.

Think Spring!
