Employee Communication Journal of Larsen & Toubro Limited - ECC Division
Vol. 15, No. 4 October - December, 2007
Dear ECC-ites,
The 70th
year of L&T and the
birth centenary of our co-founder
Mr. Henning Holck-Larsen were
celebrated in a grand manner in
Mumbai on December 21, 2007,
in which a galaxy of leaders from
political and business fronts took
part. Speakers at the event
acknowledged the admirable role
L&T played in nation-building.
Perhaps the most fitting
tribute was expressed by the
Union Finance Minister,
Mr. P. Chidambaram who lauded L&T
as India’s only company in the ‘National
Sector’. The event reiterated the pride
of place that L&T occupies in the annals
of the Indian economy and its
commitment to building the India of
the future.
As a company engaged in building
infrastructure for India and meeting the
needs of the core sectors of economy,
L&T’s focus has always been to
undertake projects in critical
infrastructure sectors like airports, ports,
power, oil and gas. In order to sustain
our pre-eminent position in the market,
we have been focusing on large EPC/
Turnkey contracts. L&T is associated
with some of the most prestigious
airport modernisation projects in India,
the latest being the Mumbai
International Airport contract secured
against competitive bidding. This
success should serve as an endeavour to
strengthen our position as a market
leader in airport construction business.
I believe that the critical aspects for
organisational sustainability are
continual efforts on cost optimisation
through process improvements and
technological advancements. A vital
linkage in this direction would be the
effective implementation of Information
Systems. The L&T-IT Council Meet and
All India ISD Meet in Chennai
highlighted new developments in EIP –
Enterprise Information Portal, CeMa –
Construction Enterprise Management,
PDSS – Production Decision Support
System, EIP Vidhya & IT
Infrastructure. It is noteworthy to
mention that our Information Systems
Department has been at the forefront
in creating a robust knowledge-driven
EIP System. The various business
process improvements implemented
across departments have been
instrumental in ensuring operational
efficiency and accuracy.
ECC has won the prestigious EMPI –
Indian Express Indian Innovation Award
for 2006 for its formwork systems. The
award commends ECC’s pioneering
efforts in propagating and implementing
a number of innovative simple processes
and revolutionising construction within
India and setting standards for the
industry in general.
The Quality Rolling Trophy is a
testimony to our commitment to QA
& QC systems and serves as a
benchmark to achieve highest quality in
all our projects. This year we had 55
entries making it the largest since the
awards were instituted. While
congratulating the winners, I take this
opportunity to reiterate that we need
to make continued efforts to strengthen
our QA & QC systems and constantly
strive to achieve highest quality in all
our projects.
With best wishes,
K.V. Rangaswami

Veligonda – A Trailblazer for ECC in Dam ProjectsArid landscapes, barren fields and dusty track lands define
the upland areas of Prakasam, Nellore and Kadapah Districts
in the State of Andhra Pradesh which fall under the severely
drought prone zone. This scenario is all set to change with
the realization of the four ongoing irrigation projects –
Veligonda, Gundlakamma, Ramatheertham and Palair, which
is expected to increase the irrigation potential from the
present 7.45 lakh acres (3.01 lakh hectares) to 13.45 lakh
acres (5.44 lakh hectares) in the next three years. This
quantum jump of 80 per cent will be achieved when the
projects are completed at a cost of Rs.4000 crore under
the “Jalayagnam” programme launched by Chief Minister
Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
A huge reservoir, called the Nallamala Sagar, is being formed
closing three gaps at Gottipadia, Sunkesula and Kakarla.
Water is proposed to be to be drawn from Kollamvagu
through an 18.80 km long tunnel by gravity and thereafter
to impound in the Nallamala sagar through a feeder canal
of 23.36km length. The canals are proposed from Sunkesula
gap, Gottipadia gap and Kakarla gap and envisages to draw
43.50 TMC of flood water from river Krishna upstream of
Srisailam reservoir to irrigate 4.38 lakh acres (1.7 lakh
hectares) in 29 mandals, mostly in Prakasam district and
marginally in Nellore and Kadapa districts.
ECC, the construction Division of L&T, is engaged in the
construction of one of these dream irrigation projects –
The Veligonda Dam, which when completed would provide
irrigation benefits to upland areas of the district besides
providing safe drinking water to 15 lakh people who had
been consuming groundwater with excess fluoride content
for decades.
ECC’s works comprise the closing of Gottipadia Gap and
excavation of Gottipadia Canal including construction of
CM & CD works, distributory system for 9500 acres. ECC

secured this contract in 2005 from Irrigation & C.A.D.
Department of Andhra Pradesh. Initially valued at Rs. 380
crore, the contract value was revised to Rs. 395 crore
considering the escalation cost. This is ECC’s first major
Dam project and is being executed on an EPC (Engineer,
Procure and Construct) Turnkey basis.
The scheme comprises construction of Dam from EL 162
to EL 230 having a base width of 57.96m and top width
of 12m, 11.40 km length canal, distributory system for
9500 acres. ECC’s major scope of work includes 10,00,000
Cum of excavation, 9,00,360 cum and 1,00,000 cum of
concreting during stage one and two, 1600t of
reinforcement, 2,30,000 sqm of formwork, 58,000 Rmt
drilling for grouting, 51,000 bags for grouting.
There was a considerable delay in the progress due to relief
and rehabilitation compensations, the project is now
strategically placed and is scheduled for completion by
August 2008.
Mr. Arvind Ramkrishna Nerurkar
(ARN), Project Manager, highlights
that Veligonda Dam is one of the
prestigious project of the Government
of Andhra Pradesh and the
implementation of the scheme would
irrigate the drought affected districts of
Prakasam, Kadappa and Nellore and
provide drinking water to the town of Markarpur. Out of
the 3 packages being executed, ECC is entrusted with the
largest gap – 600 m long, 84 m high from the deepest
level of the dam.
ARN views the project as a challenging proposition as it
is L&T’s maiden venture in constructing a dam of such
magnitude. He asserts that an initial review of similar dam
sites was instrumental in planning the machinery
requirement for the project. Though there is not much
technical sophistication, the project has a huge requirement
of concrete - 10 lakh cum, which is to be poured at a
temperature of 15 degree Celsius. Achieving and
maintaining the standard of concreting is a Herculean task.
While there was a delay in the mobilization of the new
tower cranes, the project think-tank convinced the client in
using tippers for pouring concrete as feeding of concrete
in transit mixers was not suitable due to low aggregate of
concrete and slump. Adept proof of such activities executed
in similar projects convinced the client for implementing
the same. The core samples were found to be higher than
the standard specifications. As the height of dam started
increasing earthen ramps up to 30 m height was created
for the movement of tippers. Later on conveyor was used
for shifting concrete from the batching plant to the top. As
the project required steel formwork, the entire shuttering
was designed and schemed in-house at site. Hydra cranes
were used for handling the shuttering. To reduce the cycle
time, the shutters were combined with structural steel

channels with the combined width of shutters being 4.8
m. Thus for a stretch of 25m which used to take 12 to 14
hours, the task could be completed in 6 to 7 hours. ARN
sights the sourcing of aggregates as one of the major issues.
Markapur is famous for slate rock formation which cannot
be used as aggregates. Though a hillock suiting our
requirement was identified, it was a combination of hard
and soft rock and hence the planned output could not be
achieved. An alternative arrangement with a local quarry
was established for a nominal rate.
Sourcing of river sand was another challenging task as the
nearest vendor was around 220 km away from project site.
ARN attributes that success of the project to the positive
attitude of his team. He says “concreting per month was
around 40000 cum and rarely did we have any problem
due to stoppage of work or non availability of aggregates”.
Innovations and in-house alternatives are the hallmarks to
the speedy execution of this project.
The huge tower crane buckets of 3 cum, vibrator needles
were locally fabricated which resulted in considerable savings
of cost and time. The ice plant which was initially proposed
in a concrete room was done in structural steel which
ensured head start and would facilitate easy dismantling.
ARN states that the clients are thoroughly impressed and
consider L&T as trend setters and refer other dam
contractors to review L&T’s project. Mr. Rajasekar Reddy,
the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh visited the project
during November 2005 and commended L&T for excellent
work being done.
Mr. T.R. Subash (TRS), Manager
Design, EDRC-HQ, says that “It was
a dream for me to design a dam and
Veligonda project helped in fulfilling the
same. Veligonda dam project is the first
dam project for EDRC and our team
members took this opportunity as a
challenge and successfully completed the
design of 84 m high and 600 m long concrete dam.” More
than the design of dam section, he states that the interesting
area of work was the planning of the internal arrangements
within the dam body with gallery, adit, shaft, lift etc. The
dam consists of around 2 km of gallery within it, which
will be used for the dam inspection purpose and grouting.
Planning and aligning this multi level gallery and the inter-
connection of the galleries with access adits were really
brain wracking. TRS states that “generally, we have heard
of grout holes, but in dam we have ‘A’ holes and ‘B’ holes
for grouting to improve the impermeability of dam base in
terms of lugeons”. The dam base was grouted with a total
drill length of around 22 km.
Different types of instruments were embedded in dam body
to monitor the dam in terms of settlement, plumb, thermal
etc. The monitoring was reviewed with a computerized
data acquisition system. TRS asserts “that all this was done
through our internal capability and was instrumental in
designing the dam with economy”
Mr. Pankaj Keshav Gursale (PKG) –
Planning Manager, says “when
completed the dam would be hailed as
the engineering marvel of Prakasam
district”. PKG sites that the remoteness
of the locale posed the biggest challenge
as management of materials was a critical
task. Expect for the aggregates, the
minimum distance for sourcing of other materials was
around 200 km away from project site.
The daily targeted concrete was around 1500 Cum.
Interacting with the vendors and convincing them to deliver
on schedule was one of the most important activity for the
smooth progress of the project. The methodology involved
in concreting was through dump trucks, transit mixers and
tower cranes. Around Rs. 6 crore worth of infrastructure
was mobilized for maintaining temperature controlled
concreting. Two 125tpd chilling plants, 250t of
refrigeration, two ice plants were installed for getting the
required concrete pour. PKG states that “during summer,
the temperature crossed 50 degree Celsius and two of our
thermometers burst due to the extreme heat. Maintaining
a concrete pour at 15 degree Celsius was perhaps the most
consistent challenge through out the execution.”
Having seen through the major phase of project, PKG
augurs that the project would become a landmark for L&T
in dam construction. From the financial purview, PKG
proudly states that “for the last 31 months there is no
outstanding which is a commendable achievement
considering the nature of the project. The client awarded
commendation certificates for achieving 1.68 million safe
man-hours for the period September 2006 to April 2007
and highest concreting (46000 cum) in the month of
February 2006.
Mr. M. Sankaranarayanan (MSN),
Time Office, asserts that being a naxalite
area, it is mandatory to have close ties
with the police and local administration.
As the project involved land acquisitions,
there were frequent agitations by the
villagers. All such issues were amicably
resolved with the help of the local
bureaucracy and political leaders. He subtly remarks on the
local opinion about him “stand for election and you can
win”, a testimony to the excellent rapport MSN has built
up with the local administration. MSN highlights that the
labour quarters is well maintained and has been appreciated
by the inspecting authorities. Considering the remote locale
of the project, the workers are fixed a lump sump amount.
The maximum OT availed is 84% which when considered
with the quantum of work is a minimal percentage.

Mr. B. Srinivasan (BSN), Manager -
Accounts & Administration, says
“Maintaining cordial relationships with
the locale population is instrumental in
the smooth flow of work.” BSN
highlights that when aggregate sourcing
was an issue; the local MLA intervened
and helped sourcing for a nominal rate. An understanding
with the Collector, RTO and AD Mines was brought about
for permitting sand transport without any hassle. BSN
asserts that “unity comes only if we gather in informal
manner” and this has been the main feature of the well
knit project team.
The spouses of the staff have formed a ladies club and
have family get-togethers thereby creating bonhomie among
the family members. Since Markapur, the nearest town is
devoid of decent lodging houses, exclusive facilities have
been provided at the accommodation and guest house.
Unlike other sites, the staff quarter rooms are dual sharing
with attached bath. Around 400 workmen are well
accommodated in 12 blocks. He states that 600 ceiling
fans have been provided for the workmen at the labour
colony. A separate team reviews the up-keep of the labour
colony. The Deputy Labour Commissioner during his visits
appreciated facilities and maintenance of the labour colony.
Since work is round the clock activity, the project has
opted for staggered off instead of the weekly break. The
option was well received by the staff and workmen.
As part of the corporate social responsibility two additional
class rooms for the government school was built at a cost
of Rs 2.5 lakhs. In addition staff contributed for the
books and stationeries. BSN states that “an environment
friendly zone is being nurtured at site; around 892 saplings
were planted during HHL Centenary Celebrations making
it the highest number of plantations in HYRO. A small
park has been created at the guest house and pets such as
rabbits, ducks, goose are reared. A tie up with two schools
nearby has been effected for securing admission during
mid academic year for the wards of ECC-ites. Due
importance is given to sporting activities during leisure.
The project team boast of a strong cricket team and plays
frequent matches with the police department. He proudly
states that they have annexed “the V.N. Gokhale and KAS
Cup”. During weekends films are screened at the guest
house. BSN asserts maximum productivity is derived only
when the staff and family are comfortable in all aspects.
Having seen through project from the initial phase, BSN
has prepared a handy mobilization kit highlighting the
various procedures, formats and nuances for a job of such
nature which would be released shortly in the regional
office.
Mr. S. Shriraman (SSRN), Manager
– Quarry/Crusher, states that identifying
and sourcing the total requirement of
boulders (22 lakh MTP), was a major
issue during the initial phase as the local
terrain had affinity to slate rock. Since
the identified quarry was giving a low
output, an alternative was sourced from
a local contractor. Two crushers with a combined capacity
of 450 tph are installed to cater to the aggregate production.
Sand impactors are used to enhance the quality of the
aggregate output. SSRN highlights that mechanized system
of aggregate operations is instrumental for achieving the
planned output. He states that it is for the first time L&T
is doing a concrete gravity dam and the success of the
project is due to the able assistance provided by EDRC-
HQ, Quarry Department and Region.

Mr. M. Pandian (MP), Manager –
P&M, asserts that “P&M is the backbone
to this project and we are having here
specialized major assets such as 120 cum/
hr H3N concrete batching plants with
aggregate individual weighing system for
the best accuracy, 250 TR water chilling
plants and 125 tpd flake iceplants for 13 degree concrete
placement at pouring point, 25t & 32t tower cranes – very
unique models for dam concreting.” As power comes under
L&T’s scope, the total site is being electrified by power
generators sets having an installed capacity of more than
6 MVA.
The very fact that for the last two and a half years there
has not been a single day without power is a testimony to
excellent maintenance of equipment and the dedicated P&M
team which makes it possible. The total asset value is around
Rs. 32 crore. Inspite of the remote locale, non availability
of resources locally, MP says “we are achieving targets, set
by site management through systematic planning and timely
preventive maintenance”. Another major issue which was
diligently handled was the retaining of trained manpower
at site.
For Mr. Rashpal Pahwa (RSP),
Manager-QA/QC, the project is his
maiden assignment in L&T. Having
joined the organization in October 2005,
RSP attributes the adherence to good
system practices as one of the key
elements in achieving the targets.
RSP highlights that design for the three gaps was mixed
and the estimated cement content was around 400 kg.
During trail mixes, the cement content was brought down
and maintained between 290-200 kg which resulted in
huge cost savings and was also a safe bet for the structure
as it involved mass concreting.
The site adheres to the ISO 9000 norms and has been
reviewed by various audit systems and certified with no
compliancy report. Though there were initial problems
during the sourcing of aggregates, the tested output
matched the specifications and the clients were convinced
and accorded approval to go ahead with the job. Regular
orientation programmes are conducted for new joinees and
importance is given to work methods and detailed briefing
is done before the execution of critical tasks.
Mr. V. V. Ramanamurty (VVRM),
Resident Engineer, views the completion
of foundation infrastructure within a
period of 3 months as the base for the
head-start of execution. VVRM says
that though there were some
apprehensions during the initial phase
as it was a first of its kind project for L&T, systematic
planning ensured smooth progress. As the daily concrete
pour was around 1000 cum, innovative methodology was
adopted to suit the on-site requirement. Dump trucks,
transit mixers and tower cranes were used in combination
to achieve the desired pour. First time 80 plus metal and
80 down concrete was used. VVRM highlights that as the
project is nearing completion, it has garnered a good image
for L&T and people from the nearby villages visit the site
to get a glimpse of dam that would transform the landscape
in the years to come. The project is now seen as a
benchmark in dam construction and the technical advisors
to the Government of Andhra Pradesh insist contractors to
follow and implement our methodology.
Mr. Muddamsetti Kondalarao (MKR),
Section Head – Mechanical and
Central Services, states the designing
of inundation bins, chilling units were
crucial for ensuring the standard of
concreting. Fabrication of the bins and
structural steel ice plant was totally taken
up at site. MKR asserts that is for the
first time in ECC that such huge capacity inundation bins
were fabricated. Due to the delay in land acquisitions there
was a 25 m gap between blocks 5 and 7, which was
hindering concreting activity. A conveyor was used over
the gap for concreting. MKR stresses that the whole
sequence of operations, from aggregate production to
concreting was mechanized thereby ensuring accuracy and
maximum output.
Mr. Subodh Kumar (ST), Safety
Coordinator, affirms that safety is a
continuous process which is covered in
all activities of the project. Daily pep talks
and frequent orientation programmes
ensure that safety issues are
communicated and awareness created
down the line across various departments. ST highlights
that a system of automated house keeping is done, where
before commencement of work, the workmen ensure
appropriate environment is maintained.
During the safety month, street plays, demos and films on
safety were screened as a part of the awareness campaign.
The site has achieved 1.5 million safe man hours till
December 2007. ST states that the key performance
indicator reviews the weekly performance and the overall
percentage achieved is around 89% which is a testimony to
the safe methods and practices adopted at site. He sites
some of the safe methods employed at sites such as three
lock work permit systems for rotating parts, cordless
communication system for tower cranes, and sensor alarm
in hydra cranes. Till date around 5000 workmen have been
inducted, trade wise training and training cards are given
to each workmen.

Dunga Tata Rao (DTR), Section In-charge, Dam Works,
is a 1991 graduate in civil engineering from V.R. Siddartha
College of Engineering Vishakapatanam. DTR started his
career with a class I contractor for Vizag Port Trust which
was followed by stints in Andhra Pradesh State Government
on contract basis, Crompton Greaves and Nagpur Alloy
Casting Ltd for a period of 3 years.
Having a valuable background in diverse projects, DTR
joined ECC in 1998 at RPL Jamnagar which was followed
by subsequent assignments in HPCL Vizag, MCL
Jaggapetta, Puttaparthi, Silos for Tadipatri Cement Plant,

Canal job, AP 19 & 20 Bridges, Kakinada Sea Port,
VIWSCO.
Posted at Veligonda during November 2004, DTR was
deputed to Vemagiri Hydel Power Project due to the
stoppage of works. He was back in site during March
2005. He highlights that the initial period at Veligonda
was a tough one with soaring temperatures, non-availability
of potable water and scarcity of natural resources. During
mid July 2005, the excavated pit was completed filled with
water due to heavy rains. It was a Herculean task for
dewatering and removing the slush which took close to 25
days. During October 2005, the coffer dam got filled up
due to floods and situation assumed alarming proposition.
DTR views that phase as the most critical part of the
project as the waters threatened to enter the foundations,
with the help of the local contractors the project team was
able to overcome the problem.
DTR attributes that apart from his hobbies, he enjoys
spending time at site as it is a hub for continuous
improvement and learning. He sights that at AP 19 & 20
Bridges, coconut leaves were used as mats for the approach
of equipment over soft sand. Similarly at Veligonda a steel
ramp was fabricated to facilitate movement of machinery
to the top of the dam.
Married to Sakuntala, a home maker, DTR is blessed with
a son – D. Shanmukha Srinivas studying in the 6th
standard.

Ashish Kumar Goel (AG), a 1996 Diploma in Mechanical
Engineering from Uttar Pradesh joined ECC in May 2005
after successful stints with M/s Jai Prakash Industries, IMCC
JV – Delhi Metro. AG views the Delhi Metro assignment
as a crucial phase of his career where he worked with the
latest tunneling technology – New Austrian Tunnel Method,
used for the underground tunnel works which was done
without any blasting.
Veligonda Dam Project is AG’s maiden assignment in L&T
and he remarks “it is the first time I am involved from the
start of a project”. Since the requirement for concrete was
huge, the support machinery had to mobilized and erected
for achieving the output. Capital machinery, mostly new,
valued around Rs. 35 crore was sourced for the operations
The site has four new tower cranes, two 120 cum/hr
batching plants deployed for the first time in ECC, power
generators having an installed capacity of more than 6
MVA for electrifying the site. AG states that the site incurs
the highest internal hire charges in Hyderabad Region.
He highlights that in L&T “each activity is systematically
planned and executed thereby giving scope for maximum
output.” What he enjoys most in L&T is the responsibility
and freedom at work front.
Married to Babita, a post-graduate in economics, AG is
blessed with a daughter, Stuti, who is in LKG. AG is a
sports enthusiast and avid cricketer while Babita is adept at
managing the homefront.
Savouring New Technology, His Forte
client. The site was awarded the safety award by the
National Safety Council for achieving 4.8 million safe man-
hours. Another of the fond appreciation he cherishes is the
appreciation letter from the project director. In 2007 he
was posted to HYRO which was followed by assignments
at Jindal Dam and Veligonda.
MN views his Jindal assignment as a critical work as it
involved covering of earthen bunds before the onset of
monsoon. In a period of less than a month, he executed
around 60,000 cum of riffraff works mobilizing a workforce
close to 800 workmen. He proudly states that the site
bagged the quality trophy. At Veligonda, MN is in-charge
of the Formwork, which unlike the conventional method is
a tailor made system. MN highlights that the system done
at site was devised with pre-concrete and post-concrete
hand rails for ensuring utmost safety. The total shuttering
requirement at site is close to 2 lakh sqm.
Married to Bhuvana, a graduate in history and a homemaker,
MN has two children – Vishal and Veena studying in the
3rd
standard and LKG respectively. Apart from playing
cricket and listening to music, he associates with social
activities.

K. Venugoplan (KVG), a 1987 Diploma in Civil
Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Perinthilmanna,
Kerala, joined ECC in 2002 with a work experience of ten
years. His earlier stints were with M/s Asian Duct Ltd.,
Cochin, and Royal Government of Bhutan. During his
tenure outside ECC, KVG gained invaluable expertise in
tunneling, embankment and railway line works. He asserts
that these cores strengths were instrumental for getting an
opening in L&T.
KVG’s first assignment was the Varahi tail race hydel power
project where he executed the tunneling and tail pool works.
Subsequently after completion, he was posted at Veligonda
Dam Project where apart from his core activities –
excavation, embankment, KVG coordinates the client and
sub-contract billing. He says “we have adapted an unique
methodology in this project for concreting”. A combination
of different alternatives was used to achieve the end result.
Perhaps the biggest demand of this project, he says is “the
temperature maintained concrete”. All along referred to as
a tunnel specialist, KVG views this project as significant
milestone in his career and augurs that it would be a
stepping stone in handling assignments of greater
complexity thereby enriching his own domain and expertise.
In the near future, he envisions handling independent
projects in the hydro power sector.
Married to Bindu, a home maker who is a commerce
graduate, KVG has two daughters – Navya and Bhavya,
studying in the 5th
and kindergarten respectively. A native
of Kerala, VKG enjoys watching films, sports and spending
time with his family.
Aspiring to Lead from the Front
For Ashok Kumar Goswami (AKG), handling QA & QC
at site, ensuring quality is a continuous achievement in a
career spanning close to two decades. A 1990 Diploma in
Civil Engineering from PMP Polytechnic, Mathura, AKG
career stared his career with M/s Jai Mohan Construction
and moved on to IRCON International Ltd. It was with
IRCON that AKG was associated in the execution of Delhi-
Mathura Road Project, India’s first concrete road project.
AKG asserts that the invaluable experience gained during
execution was the base for getting into L&T.
AKG’s first assignment in L&T was the Surat-
Manor Expressway which was followed by posting at
Satara-Kholapur Road Project which was completed 8
months ahead of schedule. Temperature controlled
concreting and the use of slipform paver was done for the
first time at Surat-Manor Expressway. He highlights
that the paver was used during nights for the concreting
to achieve the required chillness. Having gained substantial
working knowledge on temperature controlled
concreting; AKG’s was the right choice for Veligonda Dam
Project.
AKG’s sees Veligonda Dam Project as a consistent challenge
since mass concreting had to be done at 150
C. The work
methodology insisted that temperature checks at every stage
– from the aggregate stage to the final pour. During summer
when the temperature soared around 500
C, achieving the
planned output was a Herculean task.
Married to Rekha, a M.A. B.Ed., and a home maker, AKG
has two children – Ankita and Vishal studying in the 5th
and 4th
standard respectively. Spending time with his family
and watching television, movies and sports are his prime
hobbies.

Mr. D. Satyanarayana Reddy, Senior Engineer, TPPC BU,

co-authored and presented a paper entitled “A Computer-
Aided System for planning and 3D visualization of multiple
Heavy Lift Operations” at 24th
Annual Symposium of The
International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in
Construction (ISARC) 2007 held in Cochin during
September 19-21, 2007. Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, President
(Construction), L&T-ECC chaired the conference as
industry patron.
The paper illustrated the development of a computer aided
heavy lift planning system which can improve the
productivity and reliability of the multiple lifts planning
process in industrial construction projects. With the
introduction of heavy lift cranes, it is becoming more
common to reduce plant equipment fabrication costs by
fabricating larger portions of equipment at specialized off-
site fabrication shops. While the fabrication costs and efforts
are streamlined, more effort is required to plan and lift
these mammoth modules into place. The paper
demonstrated L&T’s capabilities and also won the best
paper award.
The International Symposium on Automation and Robotics
in Construction (ISARC) is a gathering of researchers,
academics and practitioners from all over the world,
interested in the use of information, computational and
robotic technologies for planning, managing and executing
construction projects.

sojourn in 2006 has culminated in many
memorable outings. During October 26-29,

participants thoroughly enjoyed the fascinating
show of colour and dance. Day two was the
most unique and unforgettable experience as
the group travelled to Coral Island by speed boat and
stopped over for para-gliding. It was a feeling of being at
the top of the world as one gets to glide high and also kiss
the waves due to the oscillating thrust given by the speed
boats. This was followed by the under sea walking. With
oxygen mask, the participants plunged down the shallow
floors of the sea and had a glimpse of the underworld flora
and fauna.
The post noon session included a visit to Nong Nooch
Village where a presentation of Thai culture through dance
and drama enthralled the participants. The highlight of the

“Register of Engineers for Disaster
Relief ” which is the nodal agency for
relief operations in India invited L&T
and HCC on behalf of Oxfam India, an
international NGO to support their relief
operations. Mr. J.N. Patnaik (JNP), DGM, BMH, Dhamra
Port and Mr. Manoj Kanti Roy of HCC left for Bangladesh
and assisted Oxfam’s Public Health Engineering (PHE)
expert in monitoring and implementation of PHE targets
in the cyclone ravaged districts of Bagerhat and Phirozpur.
The activities involved establishment of access, cleaning of
navigation canals, providing “Phitkiri” to individuals and
promoting the concept of water purification, construction
Cyclone Relief Work in Bangladesh
of new pond sand filters, temporary latrines etc. The field
activities during December 12-19, 2007, covered 16 villages
and involved an average travel of 250 km by road/water
and 10-12 km by foot ever day. The rehabilitation works
were implemented through a unique programme “Cash for
Work” which provided essential wages to victims of the
cyclone with a motive to engage in self community
rebuilding. The progress was phenomenal and the statistics
revealed that 99% of roads were made accessible; 75% of
navigational canals were cleared and in use; 75% of ponds
were cleaned, disinfected and tested; 25 existing pond filters
were cleaned and repaired and 150 sanitary latrines
constructed. UNICEF, CARE, SAVE THE CHILDREN,
MUSLIM AID-U.K. were some of the other international
NGOs which aided the relief operations. JNP states that
it was a unique opportunity for understanding the processes
in disaster relief operations and the role corporate sector
could play in maximizing the relief operations.

Ayudha Puja was celebrated at the Prayas Medical Centre
(PMC) on Friday, October 17, 2007. A team of PRAYAS
members performed the pooja. Pori and fruits were
distributed to all the patients and staff of PMC. Mrs.
Kanmani Jayavelu Babu made a special ‘Panagam’ and
distributed to all patients as a health drink.

The monthly Child Camp conducted by Dr. Jayakumar
Reddy from Child Trust Hospital was held on the third
Thursday during October, November and December 2007.
Apart from treating general health complaints of the
children, there was a good response to the vaccine
programme.

An advanced six-day-course on Yoga was conducted by
Mrs. Akshaya Babu Govindaraj. Many of our members
who are now regular in their practice of asanas and
pranayamam derived the additional pleasure and benefit
from this course. A refresher class is also conducted prior
to every month’s meeting.
Deepavali is the time of the year when we at PRAYAS
meet the inmates of various charitable institutions and do
our bit for our less fortunate brethren. PRAYAS presented
a water dispenser to provide purified drinking water for
the inmates at the Guild of Service. Ceiling fans were
presented to Harihara Sudha Seva Sadan. It was also an
occasion to show our gratitude to the staff at the Cenotaph
Road guest house for the service rendered during our
meetings. All the staff members were given dress material.

PRAYAS members celebrated Children’s Day, November
14, with the children at Guild of Service. As usual, the
children very enthusiastically welcomed us and enjoyed the
games conducted by us. The children in turn provided a
variety entertainment programme. They were thrilled with
the gifts that they all received. Mrs. Prema Hariharan
sponsored lunch for the children. It turned out to be a
memorable day for both the members of PRAYAS who
visited the Home and for the children.
A new endeavour undertaken by PRAYAS Trust, Chennai,
is to launch similar activities at all the Regional Office
centres of ECC. Towards this goal, Mrs. Akshaya Babu
Govindaraj, Mrs. Asha Kumar and Mr. Babu Govindaraj
had a meeting at Kolkata and made a presentation about
PRAYAS. The members of Shraddha, Kolkata, were
convinced about the advantages of merging with PRAYAS.
All the thirty six ladies who attended the meeting enrolled
themselves with the newly formed PRAYAS Trust, Kolkata.
Plans are being implemented to carry the same message to
all other centres of ECC. This is truly a momentous step
for the 11 year old PRAYAS Trust, as the whole ECC
family from all over India unites and joins hands in the
service to community.

PRAYAS members made time for spirituality combined with
fun-and-frolic, on a tour of the Pancha Dwaraka during
November 28-December 3, 2007. Traveling the vast
stretches of Rajasthan – Gujarat, it was a memorable trip.
Such trips away from home helps build trust, and make
the bond between members stronger, as one learns to
accommodate and adjust with each other.

The traditional New Year’s get-together of ECC was
held at HQ, Chennai on January 2, 2008. The function
began with the rendering of the L&T Anthem, followed
by the welcome address by Mr. K. Venkataraman (KV),
Senior Vice President & Head – Hydrocarbons & Power
Sector. KV reiterated AMN’s New Year Message “On
our 70th
year let us resolve to aim higher, reach further
and strive to add greater luster to our company’s
unending contribution to our country”. This was
followed by the presentation of Quality Rolling Trophies
to the winners from different regions/sectors.
Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, Member of the Board & President
(Construction), commenced his address with his New
Year wishes to L&T-ites and their families and
congratulated the winners of the Quality trophy.
KVR said that the year 2007, which marked
the 70th
year of L&T and also the birth
centenary of our founding father –
Mr. Henning Holck-Larsen, was an
eventful one. He shared the rich
compliments of political/business
leaders, who participated in HHL
Centenary celebrations at Mumbai on
December 21, 2007 and narrated their
admiration for the great role played by
L&T in building our Nation. He
highlighted that L&T scaled new
heights by touching a market
capitalisation of 1.2 trillion rupees and
ranked amongst the top 10 companies in
India in terms of market capitalisation. For
ECC, he said that it was remarkable year with its
revenues crossing the 10,000 Cr. mark and profit margins
touching a commendable level. He complimented the
various Sector and Business Unit Heads and the staff
for their commendable contribution to the performance
of the Division.
KVR forecast that the year 2008 would be more
promising for ECC and was confident of surpassing the
performance targets for the current financial year. He
expressed that India’s growth story is expected to
continue and a GDP growth rate of 10% by the year
2010 is quite possible. This will give fillip to the overall
demand for the construction
industry, especially with the huge
investments planned in the
infrastructure sector and the
emphasis on capital formation by
the Indian industry. This in turn
would give abundant opportunities
and prospects to our various
business units over next 8-10 years.
KVR said that the formation of
verticals was a crucial step forward
in leveraging the opportunities and
unlocking the values to sustain our
leadership in the market. He said
that the verticals will function as
KVR Forecasts Good Prospects, Welcomes 2008separate entities with end to end responsibilities and all
the service departments would be attached to each of
the verticals. Speaking on HR challenges, he said that
employee career development is a major area of focus of
the management and adequate measures are being
implemented to benefit staff at all levels. He highlighted
the introduction of a new performance metric i.e. Return
on Talent Employed (ROTE) which would enable to
monitor and improve the staff productivity in various
Business Units across the offices. He mentioned that
the Kohinoor 2010 initiatives have been implemented
at all pilot projects and are being institutionalised in all
sectors. He also reiterated the importance of business
process re-engineering and cost optimisation methods
to have a competitive edge.
KVR announced that the management’s initiative
on “Perspective Plan 2015” which highlights
the prospects and the potentials of future
businesses is expected to be completed
by April 2008. This would also be
helpful in reorganising, strategising and
conceptualising ourselves to adjust to
the evolving local and global market
dynamics and seize emerging market
opportunities.
In his response, Mr. K.G. Hariharan,
Senior Vice President & Head IP&U
Sector, assured KVR on behalf of all
ECC-ites that they would work as a team
to take the challenges ahead and meet the goals
and objectives of the organisation. KGH appealed
to all ECC-ites to continue our commitment to Quality
and on-time delivery to sustain our leadership position.
KGH advocated that the essence of leadership is in
building relationship and developing well knit teams that
would ensure delivering desired outputs with improved
efficiencies. He also acknowledged the relentless support
of the ladies who are instrumental to the success of
every ECC-ite.
The event came to an end with Mr. K. Venkatesh,

Projects, proposing the vote of thanks.
