This tradition originated in rural Europe in the 1800s as an informal version of fancy upper-class balls. Immigrants brought the custom to America. Held to celebrate a special occasion such as a barn raising, wedding or the end of harvest season, barn dances were often attended by the entire community. Folks of all ages gathered in a large barn to socialize, eat and dance to the lively music of a band. Employee of the Month Congratulations to Reetu Haave, October’s Employee of the Month. Reetu is our move-in coordinator, welcoming and answering questions for new residents and helping them adjust to their new living arrangements. Reetu’s incredibly strong work ethic, along with her cheerful and compassionate demeanor, make her a joy to be around. That being said, Reetu’s interest does not end with their move-in, but she also participates as a sales counselor. Always with a smile on her face and a cheerful greeting, we are fortunate to have her as part of the team. Therapy Dogs and Seniors Anyone who has ever stroked a dog’s soft ears or felt the gentle rumble of a cat’s purr knows the calming feeling an animal can offer. A pet companion presents many health benefits to their owners, like lower cholesterol levels, and can even prevent heart attacks and stroke. They can also help fight depression. Pet therapy for seniors, also known as Animal Assisted Therapy, is a technique that uses animals to interact with seniors for numerous reasons to help improve their quality of life. Thank you to Chris Rakauskas and her therapy dog, Dixie, for spending time with our residents. Resident Spotlight Meet Clem McCann, Glenbrooke’s Resident Spotlight for the Month of October. Clem grew up in Philadelphia, and in 1949, he joined the Navy as a Naval Aviator. Clem married his wife, Joan, in 1953 and had a quick honeymoon to New York City because he had orders to report to Korea. Clem took a few years off before he decided to join the Air Force as a draftsman where he was stationed in Alaska, Rhode Island, Vietnam, Germany and then to Patrick Air Force Base. Clem and Joan lived in West Melbourne for 30 years. A fun tidbit of information about Clem: he owned three Harley Davidsons. An interesting fact: in 1968, Clem was being transferred to Patrick Air Force Base. A C133 plane picked Clem and his Harley Davidson up, and they made a special stop to pick up the “Moon Lander.” Clem, his Harley and the Moon Lander rode together under tarps in the back of the plane. What a surprise. Congratulations, Clem! Iris Pat Dottie with Dixie
