Dear IPSFers and EMPSers,

On behalf of the EMPS 2012 Reception Committee (RC), it’s a great honor for me to welcome you all to Sudan. This newsletter is an invitation to join us for the 3rd amazing EMRO symposium.

Since we have been elected to organize this lovely event, the enthusiastic RC and me we worked and still working hard to organize a memorable stay in Sudan.

I am looking forward to meet you all in Sudan next summer.

Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office

Established in August 2008, after being approved during The 54th IPSF World Congress in Romania, our Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office is managed by the Regional Working Group (RWG), who are pharmacy students from the Eastern Mediterranean region. The establishment of the IPSF EMRO gave us the opportunity to expand the IPSF worldwide activities to reach pharmacy students in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and give them the chance to explore and enjoy IPSF spirit.

The mission of IPSF EMRO is to achieve excellence in the interrelated areas of education, research and public service. The regional office provides superior and comprehensive educational opportunities through symposia, campaigns and special professional educational levels.

The Eastern Mediterranean Pharmaceutical Symposium (EMPS) is a major and one of the greatest events concerning pharmacy students and their associations in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This event’s schedule includes scientific and educational sessions presented by the most professional speakers in the Eastern Mediterranean area besides the IPSF workshops and other social events. EMPS was launched in July 2010, and was hosted by Jordan, who made the 1st EMPS a memorable experience. The 2nd EMPS was hosted by Qatar in July 2011, and was another successful event for the region. University of Khartoum, Sudan, undertook the mission of carrying out another extraordinary event (3rd EMPS) for the region.

Where?Venue and Accommodation

Coral Khartoum is brilliantly situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile, it enjoys a superb location in the historic capital of Sudan. Merely 6.5 kilometres away from Khartoum International Airport, the hotel is the perfect choice for our event.

The Faculty of Pharmacy was founded in 1963 .

The first pharmacists graduated in 1968.

It is located in the campus of the Medicine Sciences to the West of Khartoum Hospital along Sharia al- Qasr.

The largest international conference hall in Sudan called the Friendship Hall is within walking distance from the hotel.

How much?Registration

We are pleased to tell you that all living fees are provided by the university of Khartoum as the main sponsor.

We are intending to accommodate around 250 pharmacy students and fresh graduated students from the Eastern Mediterranean Region and maybe beyond these borders.

The fee includes :

• All transfers during the events (plus transportation to/from the airport).

• All meals and accommodation for the duration of the symposium.

• All EMPS meetings, lectures, workshops, as well as the Regional Assembly sessions.

• The Scientific and Educational Symposia.

• All social events during the evenings, such as the concert, the cultural events, field trip and the cruise .

The registration periods are as follows :

You will not have to secure a visa to come to Sudan. We will take care of that for you.

The post-symposium tour will bring us to Bajrawia, the beautiful tranquil village lying on the eastern bank of the great river Nile some 220 km north of Khartoum.

The ruins of the Meroe kingdom, temples and palaces can still be found there.

SUDANKhartoum, the triangular capital, is situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers. Khartoum is a rapidly growing metropolis, comprised of three beautiful cities: Omdurman, Northern Khartoum, and Khartoum).

There are roughly ten major hotels, some of them offering high comfort up to an international standard.There are many shops that provide you with a wide selection of clothes, tasty food, and Sudanese handcrafts.

The Middle East and Africa have a reputation for providing

warmth and hospitality, but Sudan is in a league of its own,

making it a joy to visit.You will be amazed by how

friendly and kind the people are to all visitors. It is common to

be invited to stay at someone’s home, and most rural Sudanese would never dream of eating in

front of you without inviting you to join them.

The Sudanese place great value on respect and honesty and this makes theft a rare occurrence; and outside of conflict areas, the country is extremely safe to travel in.

In Khartoum/Omdurman you must see the Sufi ritual of drumming and trance that takes place about 1 hour before sunset. The Sufi ritual is a very, party-like atmosphere, where prayer is a rite of celebration.

A walk around Tuti Island, situated in the fork of

the Blue and White Nile, takes about 4 hours. The less populated northern

section is pretty, with its shady lanes, and irrigated fields, and there is a great little coffee stall under a tree on the western side.

The pyramids of Meroe are a 2.5 hours drive north of Khartoum. Naqa and Musawarat are signposted beside the Nile Petrol station (about 1.25 hours north of Khartoum) - and the track is fairly clear – but sandy.

After 4pm have coffee at the hotel, with an expansive view over Khartoum, the Nile, and Omdurman, stay to watch the spectacular sunset on the river and the astonishing display of seabirds.
