1st IPSF EMPS - Jordan

2nd IPSF EMPS - Qatar

IPSF EMPS is the first specialized pharmaceutical annual event for pharmacy students and new graduates from the Eastern Mediterranean region and their friends and colleagues from around the world.People may have thought that pharmacy is all about dispensing medications, but we all know it is much more than that. In this annual event participants will be presented with a new data about pharmacy revolution worldwide in curing, diagnosing and preventing diseases. The workshops are very enlightening; participants can learn how to improve themselves as pharmacists and how to improve their future practices. They will develop their communication skills and counseling abilities, and be able to take an action towards misuse of medicines. They will learn Powerful strategies on dealing with adversities and changes in the profession and be able to be more productive.

The first EMPS was held in Jordan in 2010 hosted by Jordan Pharmaceutical Students' Association (JPSA).

The next year Qatar was chosen to hold the 2nd IPSF EMPS in the region in association with QuPHS. The first two EMPSs were full of inspirational and resourceful lectures from the best doctors and professors from the region as well as IPSF workshops.

EMPS this year

Faculty of Pharmacy Students' Association, Sudan (FPSA, Sudan) will be hosting the 3rd IPSF EMPS of the year 2012 in our beloved country Sudan to complete what other EMPSs had started and we hope to share knowledge in pharmacy field.

Our faculty has a long tradition of excellence in pharmacy and graduate education, and research. Students learn how to be a part of future that will bring continuing change to the practice of pharmacy. In order to be ready for this inevitable change, part of the alumni mission is to prepare them for lifelong learning, and to be leaders in all areas of pharmaceutical care, particularly managing drug therapy and counselling patients on the proper use of medications. In essence, making sure the patients are as healthy as possible. Admission to the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Khartoum is highly competitive. The students admitted represent tomorrow’s leaders in the pharmacy profession.

The faculty has hold many public health days such as World diabetes day and Breast cancer day inside its halls, raising the awareness of the common with these serious diseases and many more. In the last year there were convoys and medical commissions that were sent to the rural areas of Sudan.

Sudanese henna

Henna is a beautiful Sudanese tradition. Henna is a paste that is made from the leaves of the Henna bush. The leaves are picked and made into a powder turn. Then water is added to the powder turning it into a paste. The paste is put into a cone that is made using a sturdy plastic bag, and then it is used like a pen to draw beautiful drawings on the hands or feet. The paste is left to dry, then washed off. If you are careful, your henna can last for over three weeks before fading away! Traditional designs are mostly of roses and flowers. They’re very popular and mostly done on the hands and feet.

Men also use “henna” .They put it on their hands and feet for their weddings! In the grooms “henna party” right before the wedding, his mother, sisters, and aunts get together, sit him on a decorated bed, and paint henna on his feet and his hands. Meanwhile, all his female relatives are singing and dancing, and his brothers and guy friends all get one hand “henna-d”!

Henna has been used for over 5000 years in many countries around the world to decorate women’s hands and feet, especially married women and brides. Some make it light orange, some make it red, but Sudanese like to make it black and shiny!

Traditional Clothing

For Sudanese men: most Sudanese men wear either traditional or western clothes. A traditional garb for men that is worn in Sudan is the “Jalabiya”, which is loose-fitting, long-sleeved and white in colour with “Sirwal” (loose pants), and “taqia” (cap) and “Imma” (a long turban) and “Markoob” (leather shoe). The Jalabiya is accompanied by a large scarf worn by men “Shal”, and the garment may be white, coloured or striped, and is made of fabric varying in thickness, depending on the season of the year and personal preferences. The “Taqia” is a short and rounded cap. It can be any colour. Some Sudanese Muslims wrap the “Imma” (turban) around the cap.

For Sudanese women: Sudanese woman wears a traditional “Thawb”. “Thawb” means “garment” in Arabic, and the Thawb itself is the traditional clothing for Sudanese women. “Thawb” is a long piece of cloth that is wrapped around the body. It is available in different colours and textures.

Jebana

The ritual of hospitality is as important in the Sudan as it is in other Arab and African countries. While there is a measure of similarity in all the Arab and African countries, each has its unique characteristics. For example, no other country prepares coffee as the Sudanese do, if this country acquires culinary fame; it is for its Sudanese Jebena (Specially prepared Sudanese Coffee).

To prepare Jebena we fry our coffee beans in a special pot over charcoal and then grind it with cloves and certain spices, then steep it in hot water and serve it lovingly in tiny coffee cups (Fingan) after straining it through a special grass sieve.

Expectations to IPSF EMPS 2012

As hosts of this remarkable event, we assure you that your experience in our country will be unforgettable; you will find that Sudan is your second home, you will never feel alone or be left stranded, for Sudan will embrace you with love and affection. It isn’t anything like the publicity suggests; it is more secure than you would think and all the events will be held in strictly safe places so there is nothing to worry about. We hope that you will make use of all the sessions, workshops and tours , and make friendships across the region, communicate, get involve, and enjoy the whole journey.
