Proverbs 16:3Commit to the Lord

whatever you do,and your plans willsucceed.”

This week I amgoing to cen-ter around

finances, the prob-lem that we really do

not have any control over. Christmas isright around the corner. Now what we aregoing to be looking at is not an MBA sortof thing. The important thing is gettingour financial lives under control. So weare going to look at four things. Three ofthem are going to be just basic wise say-ings that we find in the Book of Proverbs. And the fourth item is going to be a com-mand that we find in the New Testament.

Well the first part, the first point comesin Proverbs 16 verse 3 and it says this.I. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do,and your plans will succeed.”“Commit to the Lord whatever you do,

and your plans will succeed.” Here is abasic bit of wisdom that says that plan-

ning is good and that as responsibleChristian people our planning has donesomething. This is something we do underthe authority of God. So we commit whatwe do to God and this includes our finan-cial life.

Here is the problem. We have got nofinancial plan, many of us and what is thesolution? The solution is to prayerfullybudget. In a healthy lifestyle there isalways money left over at the end of themonth and if we get to the end of our payperiod again and again and there is nomoney left, and we find ourselves shortagain, we need to know why. We have tohave that capacity to somehow analyzewhat’s going on in our lives and the wayto do that is to start gathering the dataabout how we spend and start comparingthat to some picture of what we should bespending to live within our income. Weespecially need these targets in our weakareas. We hardly need the target in areaswhere we are strong and have a lot of self-control already. Now God can give us insight into this, as

we pray about it and ask for God to showus. We can get some insight and somesense of what would be good priorities in

our lives and then we need to stick to it.Now, this is a no-brainer. You didn’t needto come to church this morning to hearthis because you knew this already. Buthow many of us are living that way?Making a budget and then learning how tolive by it.

Let me go to a bit of common senseadvice. It comes in the Book or Proverbsagain but this time the 21st chapter. Soturn a few pages over, the 21st chapter, the17th verse.II. “He who loves pleasure will become

poor; whoever loves wine and oil willnever be rich.”

The passage here talks about being toointerested in pursuing a lifestyle of pleas-ure, good food, good wine, good circum-stances, and comfort and exciting experi-ences. Anybody who dedicates their livesin that direction is going to inevitably runinto financial problems. There is an overindulgence that we can have in life and sothe problem here then is overindulgenceand the solution then is to simplify ourlives. We live in a society that is based onoverindulgence and over-consumption.That’s what our whole economy is basedon.

Over-consumption isn’t a matter of howmuch a thing costs, it’s a matter ofwhether we really need it or not. So weneed to simplify our lives a bit and weneed to slow down on replacing thingsthat really don’t need to be replaced yet.We need to buy what we need and not justwhat we want and we need to discern thedifference between quality and just show-ing off.

You know, there is a lot of ego spendingin the world and none of it will ever be aChristian character witness. We need to bediscerning on how we spend our money.Sometimes it’s a real simple thing, as sim-ple as eating more meals at home.

There are different choices that face us,but we need to face those choices becauseit’s not just a matter or earning more andmore money, because no matter howmuch money you can run into this prob-lem. I don’t know whether you all noticedit in the paper just a few weeks ago, buttwo athletes both had multi-million dollarcontracts, both facing bankruptcy becauseno matter how much they earned, they haddiscovered a way to spend more than theywere earning

Water Gate Salad for XMAS

By: Bettye “Katt” WilliamsELITE NEWS STAFF WRITER

Christmas is in the air, people shop-ping for Christmas gifts, Christmaslights on houses, Christmas trees

decorated with lights and another year inwhich the community came together tohelp children in need and to put a smile ontheir faces on Christmas morning. EliteNews celebrated another successful year onFriday with the “Bless a child onChristmas” campaign. This year, the EliteNews went a step further and added warmthby collecting coats to help keep a childwarm this winter.

Friday did not only turn out to be niceand not too cold, but cars pulled up by thedozens to drop off toys, coats, and non-per-ishable food items to kick-off the 2nd yearfor “Bless a Child on ChristmasCampaign." There was no greater feelingthan to see how many people and familiescared and wanted to help a child onChristmas that otherwise may not havebeen able to get a gift on Christmas. TheK104 and KRNB truck was on hand at EliteNews with music and a treat for anyonewho stopped by to drop off a gift or coatwith tickets to the Kwanza Fest forSaturday or Sunday’s event as well as tick-ets to see Steve Harvey.

I watched men, women, and even chil-dren walk across the street to give anunwrapped toy just to help someone else’schild have a Merry Christmas. Boxes andboxes were filled with all types of toys andnew and gently used coats outside in frontof the Elite News.

Everyone’s face lit up as a SUV truckdrove up and three employees (DavidEscalante, Bea Rodriguez, and Rex Cole)from Dallas County School District and gotout and unloaded numerous boxes of coatsand toys that were collected to help “Blessa Child on Christmas” from different DallasCounty School Service Centers.

Needy children in our community gowithout proper food, shelter and essential

medical care every day due to a variety offactors their parents or guardians encounterincluding low wages, job loss, injuries, ill-ness, age, domestic violence, or divorce. While all of us are susceptible to hardtimes, children are affected the most duringthe Christmas Holidays, and they make upthe largest number of clients we serve. Thetoys, food, and other services provided canbe the start of a new life and new beginningfor those children in need.

Elite News staff feels rewarded manytimes over for the help we provide in mak-ing a difference in the lives of others. Yourkindness and compassion will help bringsmiles of hope and joy to many faces ofAmerica's less fortunate children onChristmas day this year.

Elite News and myself would like tothank the sponsors; Dallas County SchoolDistrict, Coke Cola, K104, KRNB for thisyears “Bless a Child on Christmas” cam-paign. Special thanks go out to my volun-teers who stood in the street, on the curves

holding signs, helping feed those whostopped by, and being there for supportand help in any way needed; TyroneHodge (Elite News staff), Clara McDade,Annette Cullors, Darnell Gillespie, Jr,Mrs. Irma Hall (actress-Soul Food), andall the Elite News staff for all your dona-tions, help, patience and organization of“Bless a Child On Christmas Campaign.”and thank you to the community.

Would you like to help us make a dif-ference? Do you want to make a differencein the life of a child at Christmas? We needpeople like you to donate toys, food, ordonations to buy toys and foods, call EliteNews 214-372-6500. Together, we will beable to help families and individuals makea child smile on Christmas morning with atoy and food on the table. If you are inter-ested in donating toys, coats and dona-tions, remember it is never too late tomake a difference in a child’s life. Pleasehelp the Elite News in this effort.

Dallas ISD online tools help students explore career

choices in high school December 2011

december 16, 2011 www.dfwelitenews.com page 4

Success in schoolas well as lifeoften depends on

the choices we makealong the way. The bet-ter informed we are, thebetter the choices andthe greater the opportu-nities for success.

That is why for thepast five years, students

as early as sixth grade have had the opportuni-ty to explore the possibilities and require-ments for a myriad of possible careers throughCareer Cruising. This online college andcareer planning tool allows students to makeinformed decisions about what professionsthey might be interested in and what coursesto choose in high school and later in college tomake it possible.

Students are usually introduced to CareerCruising by taking an assessment that match-es their interests and skills with careers.Students then can explore the careers thatmatch what they are passionate about to get abetter understanding of what they need to do

in high school and college to prepare for suc-cess in those fields. Eighth-graders arerequired to take the assessment and beginexploring careers before choosing what cours-es to take in high school. Imagine that!

Research has shown that the earlier studentsstart exploring careers and what it will take topursue them, the earlier they can start thinkingabout what courses they want to take, whatclubs they want to participate in, and whatopportunities are open to them.

This month, students from eighth to 12thgrades will have yet another tool at their fin-gertips that will help them make informedchoices about their future: Course Planner.

This online tool, which is part of the CareerCruising program, will allow students andtheir parents to look at all the courses offeredin the high school of their choice and plan forfour years of credits, much like they will doonce they get to college. Course Planner spec-ifies what courses are required for graduationand shows the array of electives offered intheir high school that match students’ inter-ests.

Counselors will continue to be veryinvolved with students as they choose their

courses for each year of high school, butCourse Planner gets students and their parentsto participate more actively in the process.Imagine that!

Through Career Cruising and high schoolredesign, students are empowered to makedecisions about their education and able to geta taste of a career they are interested in whilestill in high school. They don’t have to waituntil college.

Eighth-graders and their parents will havethe opportunity to explore the various careeracademies and pathways offered at the com-prehensive high schools and the special pro-grams at the district’s three early college highschools at the High School Academy/PathwayShowcase that will be held 9 a.m. to noon,Saturday, Jan. 21, at South Oak Cliff HighSchool. Imagine that!

In other District 5 news, three schools atYvonnne A. Ewell Townview Center wereawarded 2011 College Readiness Awards bythe Texas ACT Council for increasing thenumber of students taking the ACTAssessment over the past five years and sig-nificantly increasing their level of achieve-ment and college readiness.

Congratulations to the School for theTalented and Gifted, School of Business andManagement, and Rosie M. Collins SorrellsSchool of Education and Social Services.

Amelia Earhart Learning Center has under-gone a complete library re-model, thanks to agenerous donation from Capital One in con-junction with Heart of America.Congratulations to Principal Nelson and herlibrarian Jaime Fowler! Earlier this fall, everyEarhart student was the recipient of free uni-form shirts provided by the Tzu ChiFoundation.

Enrollment at three new Wilmer-Hutchinscommunity schools in District 9 has exceededexpectation as the district returns to theWilmer-Hutchins community. More than2400 students are in the three schools, with955 enrolled at Wilmer-Hutchins ElementarySchool. So, it’s true, “The Hutch is back!”

I am available to meet with your organiza-tion to discuss the many successes with DallasISD in general and District 5 in particular.Contact my office at 972-925-3718 to sched-ule the meeting.

“Who is Robert L. Parish,Sr. ?”

This article is long overdue. It has been goingover my mind about

this article for two (2)years now, and it is timethat this “GIANT OFWISDOM” is known to

everyone who thought they knew him. Some people might say, he was the pastor of

True Lee Baptist Church, some might say hewas the moderator of Galilee Griggs MemorialDistrict Association for X-number of years, and some might say he was many other things, but I know him very well for what he reallywas.

R. L. Parish, Sr. was one of the wisest menthat I have ever known. The reason why I saidone of the wisest is, because Rev. C.B.T. Smithwas a very wise pastor himself. But, I hadmore communication with Rev, Parish, because I worked directly under his supervi-sion. The first thing people must understandabout Rev. R. L. Parish is the fact that he wastruly a para-church supporter. Whenever thepara church met, you would find Rev, R, LParish, Sr. and many members from True LeeChurch there. In fact, members from True Leewould more likely out number any churchthere, and that is because Rev. Parish pushedthe issue of getting involved.

Because of the strong commitment of get-ting involved caused Galilee GriggsMemorial District to become one of thestrongest Laymen’s Department in the state ofTexas. Rev. R. L. Parish, Sr. was always thereto urge us on, and support for us in every way.He was always in our corner, but we had to beright in what we were doing.

Our Layman department met with WalterCade, Jr. in 1977. Walter Cade at that timewas the National Laymen’s President. We didnot have a Laymen Department that couldmeasure up to the organized work presentedby the National Laymen’s Department. Wewere invited to attend a vast meeting inKansas City to jump start Texas Laymen. We

were supposed to attend this meeting as StateLaymen from Texas. Rev. Parish told us tomeet with Rev. Adoyal McCraw about this tripto Kansas City to GLEAN what would be bestfor our State Laymen. Well, if anyone knewRev. McCraw knew exactly what he would do.Yes, he said no to the whole thing. So, Rev.Parish called Hider Watts, AgazzieMcClendon, and Gene Turner to his office fora meeting. Rev. Parish stated to us that it wouldbe a blessing for us to be a part of this meeting,

Rev. Parish informed us that we would go thereas a District, and not as a state. What we wouldlearn would sooner or later would overflowinto the State Laymen Department. We wereinformed that there was a member at True LeeBaptist Church who owned a Bus Company, which would carry us to Kansas City, and hedrove the bus himself. Because of the wisdomand support of Rev. R. L. Parish, Sr. TheLaymen traveled to a high dimension. Thismeeting was in 1978. Anyone who knew Rev.Parish knew that he did not waste words, hewould listen to everything you say withoutinterruption, but when he spoke you could feelhis wisdom penetrating your entire mind andsoul. When he would speak you would beeager to listen, because he was never going toget in a hurry with his answer. He could holdon to “WELL’ seem like a half minute or so,but when he put the words out after he said“WELL …. they really meant something withpower. Rev. Parish did not have to do a lot oftalking in order for you to understand what hemeant. His wisdom was so strong with just afew words that they would search your entiresoul and mind at the same time, and you wouldunderstand right away what he was talkingabout. I have never seen anyone display asmuch wisdom as this man, I would imaginemany of the True Lee members miss the wis-dom which he showered them with. I wouldimagine they shook it off by saying, “WELL,you know how Rev. Parish is.” Which meansthey miss it. Rev. Parish was larger than one’sthoughts, as far as wisdom is concerned; hewas in a class all by himself. You would havehad to know him in order to understand what Iam saying in this article.

I am trying to describe the wisdom of thisman, but I know I can not. I can only tell abouthim, but to really understand what I am sayingyou would have had to meet him for yourself.I know I can not fully make you understandexactly what I am saying, because you are notable to witness what I am saying. Anotherthing about Rev. Parish, he never intentionallytried to bring attention to himself. He kept alow profile at all times. A lot of pastors love forpeople to brag on them, but not Rev. Parish, hedid not care if anyone said great remarks abouthim or not. Sometimes I believed he rather thatyou didn’t. He was an amazing individual, even if you did not know him. He’s amazinganyhow.

Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May Godbless you REAL GOOD, and may He everkeep you in His loving care.

Dear Dr. Hollie,

What is it that I can dofor my friend? Sheis being openly

abused by her boyfriend. I sayopenly because I’ve seen itonce myself. And, other timesshe gave me blow-by-blowdetails. The time that I wit-nessed it, I called the police. They came and got him, I don’t knowwhat happened with all that. I do knowthat he was out and they were back at itwithin days. She thinks it’s okaybecause she fights back. However, evenher fighting back is only sometimes. Ican tell when she has fought backbecause she is beaten even worse. Shetells me these stories like it’s funny. Idon’t know what I can do for her. I’vetold her time and time again that this isnot okay. She won’t listen to me becauseshe says I lucked up and married the firstman I loved, and he has no anger issues.Normally men are angry creatures. It isso frustrating. I even called a domestic

violence hotline for her, butof course, they told me thatthere was nothing theycould do until she calls forherself. I don’t know whatelse I can do. Please help!

Frustrated

Dear Frustrated,I hope that you can con-

vince your friend that herrelationship is absent of love and thather boyfriend needs help. Ask her as afavor to you to at least call the hotline andhear the information that they have forher. And, by all means keep insisting thatshe reevaluates herself and know that shedeserves better. NOTE TO MY READERS: Domestic

violence is a serious matter and it doesn’tmatter whether you are the abuser or theabused each of you need to seek profes-sional counseling immediately.Dr. Hollie is a Pastor and practicing psy-

Mark 7:20-23"What comes out of a man

is what makes him 'un-clean.' For from within, outof men's hearts, come evilthoughts, sexual immorali-ty, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewd-ness, envy, slander, arro-gance and folly. All these

evils come from insideand make a man 'un-clean.'"

Our heart pumps

life into all the

other parts of

our body. If our heart is made clean through the for-

giveness of Jesus, the rest of our life will also become

clean as His life flows through us; "First clean the

inside...and then the outside also will be clean"

(Matthew 23:26). But if our heart remains soiled by

an unrepentant sinful nature, no amount of outside

scrubbing and polishing will ever make us clean.

In the above passage, Jesus presented a list of

"evils" for our self evaluation, as an outward test of

inward cleanliness. Our lives may be free from the

obvious stealing, murder, and adultery; but the rest of

the list requires us to look a little deeper. Folly is the

lack of good sense. Arrogance is an overbearing con-

fidence. Slander is making false statements against

someone. Envy is discontent due to another's good

fortune. Lewdness is indecent language or action.

Deceit means to conceal the truth. Malice means to

cruelly tease, and greed is excessive desire.

A transformed believer in Jesus Christ, one who

is "circumcised of the heart" (Romans 2:29), should

never be characterize by this type of behavior. As

the Spirit of Jesus makes us into a "new creation" (2

Corinthians 5:17) and begins to flow through our

life, these old sins ought to slow to a trickle and

eventually pass away. Though sin will never com-

pletely disappear, it no longer should define who

we are.

Is the cleansing power of Jesus flowing into all

areas of our life? Or are there still areas we claim as

our own? If we desire to offer our lives as "living sac-

rifices, holy and pleasing to God" (Romans 12:1),

then we must allow our sacrifice to be completely

cleansed; we must place our heart more fully in His

hands. Let's come before our Heavenly Father and

allow the transforming and absolute forgiveness of

Jesus to make us clean from within.

“A Promise toAbraham” Genesis15:1-6; 12-18.Every believeknows that the

Lord have madegreat promises tothose who loveand obey him. In

the lesson God reassures Abraham thatevery promise he made to him and hisseed after him would be fulfilled. Wefind in this man’s life that whatever OurGod says he is going to do He will surlydo even those things that seem impossi-ble to us. God settle the promise toAbraham concerning an heir. I have towonder how I would respond had Ibeen Abraham an old man with a barrenwife and a promise to have a nationcome out of me. But God callsAbraham out of his tent and tells him tolook up and count the stars in the heav-ens if he can and of course he could not(Even today we cannot)and tell him thathis descendants would be like the stars

in number. Those that have placed theirfaith in the Lord Jesus Christ are a partof that enumerable number. To seal thedeal God causes Abraham to fall into adeep sleep and show him a smoking firepot and a burning lamp pass betweenthe two pieces of carcass. The Hebrewwriter says; “For example, there wasGod’s promise to Abraham. Since therewas no one greater to swear by, Godtook an oath in his own name, saying:“I will certainly bless you, and I willmultiply your descendants beyondnumber.” Then Abraham waitedpatiently, and he received the promise.Sunday was our Annual Women’s dayunder the leadership of Sis, VeronicaClark, and their theme was “Wait on theLord” Isa.40:31. They had a candlelight service where each woman wasasked to light her candle and tell whatshe thank God for. Pastor LloydMorgan was the speaker.

Be Blessed!

Be strong and courageous. Do not beafraid or terrified because of them, forthe LORD your God goes with you; hewill never leave you nor forsake you."Deuteronomy 31:6

You asked, “Why is

the world in such

turmoil? Why do

bad things happen to good

people? Why are our chil-

dren, women and homes

being attacked?” And the

list goes on and on. The

word of God makes it

crystal clear that Satan is

the prince and power of

this world. He is in the

business of trying to prevent the spread of the

gospel to the lost and dying world. How does he go

about his work? By attacking the “Christians” who

are commissioned by the Lord Jesus Christ to pro-

claim the gospel. This includes all Christians. We

are encouraged to put on the whole armor of God

that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the

devil. (Ephesians 6:11) When you read Ephesians

6:12 and 1 Peter 5:8, you can easily see that there is

a spiritual war going on. With this in mind I suggest

that we fight this battle with the best weapons the

Lord gives us, and that is His word and prayer. His

spoken word is power and prayer is a powerful

weapon.

This week in the NFL,reestablish the fact thatpart of the attraction to this

league is its unpredictability. When the Cowboys struggle withthe 49ers at the first of the season, the Cowboys receive tons of neg-

ative press because they struggle with an also ran 49erteam. After the Niners establish the fact that they’re acontender. No one remember the Cowboys beat them, but the opinion of the Cowboys never change. Morerecently the Cowboys struggle with a thought to beHapless Cardinal team. Again the sentiment is thosesorry Cowboys. The very next week that same Cardinalteam beat the high flying 49ers. It’s hard to win in theNFL.

Green Bay got in the play-offs the last game of the

season pretty close to the last play of the season. Nowthey’ve won some 19 games in a row along with aSuper-Bowl.

I’m not trying to change anyone mind about anyteam, I’m trying to let you, let the season play itself

out. Everybody that has a chance at the play-offs,believe that they still have a chance don’t count themout. The Cowboys had 2 games to crush the New YorkGiants end their season and blew both chances. Thatdoesn’t mean that they can’t still win it means that it willbe tough.

The NFL had at least two teams win Super- Bowl winthat were wild cards. The formula is getting in the play-offs and get hot.

You can go through the league any team pick andthere’s at least 3games that could have gone either way.So you add 3 games to most teams and you’re in theplay-offs now getting hot.

These teams are so much alike every year eachteam, I’m talking about teams that really play, gothrough a three or four game periods where they win

those games that could have gone either way. And Joe qpublic think these teams are on a roll, not necessarily so.

This league is so evenly matched, then you scattera few guys like Tom Brady, Eli, and Peyton Manning,Ben Rothlisburger, and then you get the impression ofSuper teams. The teams that don’t have those type guyscan win too; it’s just a harder struggle. This is the timeof the year for that type player to make their fame. Thegreat coach’s start challenging these type guys “now isthe time for you high dollar boys to earn your money”.

This is not the time of the year for a DeMarcus Waretype to line up off side. Or a Dez Bryant to call FairCatch a then try to block. Mistake like those are reasonspeople think the New York Giants type teams are gettingit together. Take away those type bone head plays andyou think teams like the Cowboys and Cardinals are get-ting their team together. It’s just that simple. So don’t besurprised if Green Bay, New England, New Orleans typeteams don’t make the Super -Bowl. If you see theTexans, Bengal type in the Bowl doesn’t think its luckit’s the NFL.

Lamar Odom knows what it takes to repeat as anNBA champion. Vince Carter wants to knowwhat it feels like to become an NBA champion.

The Dallas Mavericks are hoping a little of both —Odom’s experience and Carter’s hunger — can go a longway to help their title defense. The two newcomers were the stars of Mavs media day

on Tuesday because of what they represent. They’re theproof that team owner Mark Cuban is serious about win-ning it all again, which is something fans were question-ing just a few days ago when the billionaire was lettingthe core of last year’s team dissolve with the departureof free agents Tyson Chandler, Caron Butler and J.J.Barea.

“Having depth and having good guys that can play ispart and parcel to being effective,” coach Rick Carlislesaid. “The deepest team that can stay healthy and staytogether is the team that’s going to have the best chanceto come out of the West.”

Late last week, things were looking bleak for Dallas’chances of coming out of the West when the Lakers werepoised to get Chris Paul from New Orleans, with Odompart of the bait. Then the league blocked that deal. The Lakers were still willing to get rid of Odom and the

Mavericks were eager to get him. The deal was struckquickly, using a trade exception Dallas acquired fromNew York as part of another move that helped pave theway for Chandler to join the Knicks.Odom was stunned the Lakers didn’t want him around.

He was glad the commissioner rejected the deal to NewOrleans because he wanted to contend for a champi-onship, not start over with a young team. He said he toldthe Lakers that if they had to deal him, Dallas topped hiswish list.“It’s definitely surreal,” he said.”It happened like that,”

he said, snapping his fingers.Odom also felt disrespected because he never saw this

coming. Over seven years, he won two titles and lastseason was named the league’s Sixth Man of the Year.“If somebody is telling you, ‘You can’t be here, there’sno more room for you,’ you’ve got to understand that,”he said. “I think it’s because of how they did it that I tookit so personally.”He wouldn’t describe his initial thoughts about the deal

to New Orleans, because, “I can’t cuss.” He appreciatedKobe Bryant speaking out against the trade, and found itcurious that Los Angeles not only would send him to aconference rival, but to the team that swept the Lakersfrom the playoffs last season, ending their two-yearreign as champs.

Carter — a former All-Star and dunk champion —became a free agent after the Phoenix Suns bought outhis contract. He chose to sign with Dallas because he’sat the point in his career where all that matters to him is“winning, and playing on a team that wants to win andknows how to win.I think they’ve shown all of that,” hesaid. “My goal is to fit in with what they’ve accom-plished and who they are. ... If we can continue likethey’ve done before — just leave the egos outside, it’snot about how many points you’re going to score, it’show productive you’re going to be for your team to win— with the firepower we have, we’ll be fine.”

Notes: The Mavericks announced Tuesday night thatthey had traded versatile swingman Rudy Fernandez andforward Corey Brewer to Denver for a future second-round pick.

You can count Dallas City Council memberDwaine Caraway among those whobelieve Dallas Skyline got a raw deal from

the referees during Saturday’s Class 5A DivisionI state semifinal loss to Southlake Carroll.

Caraway issued a statement Tuesday callingon the UIL to investigate calls that went againstSkyline, notably the onside kick recovered byCarroll that led to the winning touchdown in theDragons’ 28-24 come-from-behind victory.Skyline supporters have argued that the kick didnot travel the required 10 yards before Carroll’sRay Crockett recovered. Here is the full text ofCaraway’s statement:I, Dwaine R. Caraway am calling upon the

University Interscholastic League (UIL) to inves-tigate referee’s calls that cost the Skyline HighSchool football team an opportunity to competein the state championship game

Having been present at the game and aftercarefully reviewing the film of the matchupbetween Skyline and Southlake Carroll, I canconfidently say that the level of officiating wasabsolutely below the standards of what isrequired for such an important game. In the finalminutes, there were several blatantly blown calls, which completely changed the outcome of thegame.

One of those calls occurred with just a fewminutes left in the game when Skyline was ahead.Southlake Carroll made an onside kick to try totake the lead kicking the ball from the 40 yardline. The rules say the ball must travel 10 yards. The referee said the ball crossed the plane of the48 yard line. In this case, I believe, the refereemade the wrong call by ruling that SouthlakeCarroll’s player fell on the 49 yard line. In anoth-er case, the flag thrown for pass interference wasnot even close. These bad calls make me questionthe motives of the officiating crew.

I understand that mistakes happen, but for agroup of officials to decide the outcome of thatgame, rather than allowing the players to do sois completely unacceptable. High School athlet-ics are part of our childrens curriculum and thelesson that Skyline learned on Friday was that nomatter how hard you work and how well you per-form, someone can break the rules and take it allaway from you.

I am asking the public to encourage theDirector of the UIL to investigate this matter sothat a future group of students aren’t subjected towhat our Skyline students were on Friday. In myopinion, Skyline won that game and all of theplayers are champions. It is unfortunate that afew bad calls took away their dream. The UILcan restore faith in these young people by doingthe right thing which is to review the film of thegame and publicly report and explain their find-ings.

On Monday, Skyline principal Harold Wrightsaid the school would file a complaint with theAustin Football Officials Association, whose ref-erees worked the game.

Miles Austin could have iced a vic-tory against the New York Giantswith a crucial play. Instead, the

ensuing punt was shanked and the defensewent into meltdown mode, again. And forthe second consecutive week, a timeoutpreceding a missed re-tried field goal fac-tored into the equation of another loss."We have to find a way to finish these games,"

coach Jason Garrett said. The Cowboys have blown fourth-quarter leads

in five losses this season, including three cases, like Sunday night, when the margin was at least12 points. For all of his bluster and declarationsabout being on a path to becoming a head coach, new coordinator Rob Ryan's defense is notworking."You have to put your head down and keep

playing games," Romo said. "It's about us com-ing back … and playing our best game next

week." The Cowboys play at the Tampa BayBuccaneers on Saturday night. Maybe they havecaught breaks in facing an opponent with aseven-game losing streak — and with a shortweek that left one less day for the stinging lossto the Giants to linger.Dallas has won two playoff games and no

Super Bowl in 15 years. The way they are play-ing, it do not look like they will be going to aSuper Bowl no time soon.

Kathlyn Gilliam, wasnot only the firstBlack woman, but

the first Black person elect-ed to the Dallas School

Board. Gilliam was elected school board trustee in1974, following the June 5, 1974 court judgment, inwhich Judge Sarah Hughes found institutional racismby DISD. Gilliam went on to become the first womanof any race elected as president of the Dallas SchoolBoard. Gilliam served as DISD trustee until 1997,when she was replaced by former DISD Trustee RonPrice.Gilliam, a Dallas native, graduated from Lincoln

High School. As a youth, she attended segregatedschools and as an adult, faced career barriers due toboth her race and her sex. But unlike many, sherefused to accept the status quo. As an adult, Gilliamjoined and eventually became president of the DallasCouncil of the Colored Parents and Teachers, anorganization that covered in 19 states and the Districtof Columbia. She fought tirelessly to end segregation in Dallasschools, and while on the school board, she pushed forminority representation throughout the district andpromoted affirmative action to increase the number ofAfrican-American teachers in the district.

Gilliam also helped to establish the DISD magnetschools in the southern sector and was instrumental inthe hiring of DISD’s first African-American superin-tendent, Marvin Edwards. Just two years ago, Gilliamreceived a standing ovation as she entered the schoolboard meeting, which was called to discuss the possi-ble dismantling of the magnet schools and learningcenters she worked diligently to create through herdesegregation efforts. Ironically, in his final acts astrustee, Price, who followed her, was instrumental inhelping DISD come from under the court orderGilliam and others fought for.

In doing so, it allowed for the ultimate dismantlingof the learning centers protected by the court order. It

was a sad day for Gilliam, as she watched Price andother Blacks on the Board fight unsuccessfully to savethe centers that benefitted mostly minority students.Gilliam’s contributions have not been forgotten bythose she served. In fact, the story of Gilliam’s desegregation efforts is

featured in the documentary, “No Ways Tired: KathlynGilliam and the De-Segregation of Dallas PublicSchools,” which won first place at the 2006Juneteenth Film Festival for Best Documentary.Additionally, the Kathlyn J. Gilliam CollegiateAcademy was named in honor of her unselfish strug-gle for children. The high school will accommodate500 students feeding in from seven district middleschools and will collaborate with the University ofNorth Texas to feature a college-preparatory curricu-lum. The Academy also will encourage communitymembers to take college classes after hours and makefull use of the recreational spaces, an aspect of com-munity involvement Gilliam strongly supports. Thegroundbreaking is expected this spring.Gilliam, Kathlyn Joy Kathlyn Joy Gilliam, champion

for education and civil rights leader, died Sunday ather home from cancer. She was 81. Services areentrusted to Lott’s Mortuary. Visitation will beginThursday at Lott’s from 11 am until 2:30 pm. Then,Mrs. Gilliam will lie in repose at The Hall of State atFair Park on Thursday from 3 pm until 9 pm. Funeralservices are Friday, 11 am at Christian Chapel CME“Temple of Faith” 14120 Noel Rd.
