The objective of this project was to design, build and test a device which would move a 0.5 kg mass from a lower plinth to a higher plinth which were approximately 1 meter apart. The lower plinth was 50 mm high, the higher plinth was 100 mm high. To achieve a 7, the device was to: weigh less than 1.5 kg; move the object in less than 1 minute; and draw less than 1 W of power. Additionally, the supports of the device could only touch specic areas of the test platform. 4 types of cranes were considered against 7 weighted criteria. From this, it was determined that a gantry crane would be most eective. We designed the truss sections to be made from radiata pine, and for the gantry car to t within. Cross-supports were installed at the top of the truss sections and legs attached to the outside. All-thread rods were installed at the bottom of the legs to provide additional support and maintain the spacing of the legs. Washers were also attached to the rods for counter-weighting to ensure the crane did not topple over when the car was at either end. The weight of the crane was approximately 800 grams and moved the 0.5 kg mass in approximately 30 seconds, drawing 0.99 watts. 14 Thomas Knight | Résumé N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N m W kg J ρ A s K Pa N 01 OVERVIEW 02 SKILLS & INTERESTS 03 WORK EXPERIENCE 04 EDUCATION 05 PROGRAMS & LANGUAGES 06 REFEREES 07 PROJECTS

PROJECT DETAILS ENB 150 – Introducing Engineering Design Group Project [6 Members] 2012 Semester 2 [1st Year] GRADE High Distinction [7] OVERVIEW Designed, built and tested a device to move a mass from a lower plinth to a higher plinth in less than 1 minute, drawing less than 1 watt, and weighing less than1.5 kg.

Additionally, the supports of the device could only touch specific areas of the test platform.

4 types of cranes were considered against 7 weighted criteria. From this, it was determined that a gantry crane would be most effective. We designed the truss sections to be made from radiata pine, and for the gantry car to fit within.
