The mission of Endicott College is to instill in students an understanding of and an appreciation for professional and liberal studies. Deeply woven within this philosophy is the concept of applied learning, which has been the hallmark of Endicott. Linking classroom and off-campus work experience through required internships remains the most distinguishing feature of the College.

Endicott has a vision for the total development of the individual within a community that fosters an appreciation of diversity, international awareness, community service, and moral and ethical values. Endicott is an innovative and vibrant, student-centered institution that supports undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of knowledge.

Common threads run through the fabric of the Endicott experience: increased self-confidence, stronger professional skills and technological competencies, and perhaps the most valued of all, lives open to change.

I chose Endicott for a few reasons. For one, I chose Endicott for their great internship program that opens many doors. Many students I have spoken with in the past have been offered jobs and are working at their previous internship sites. Another reason being is the Sport Manage-ment program here at Endicott is one of the top programs in the nation offering a variety of classes that appeal to me. Lacrosse has always been a passion of mine and Endicott has a well renowned program with one of the best coach staffs in Division III. It was an easy decision to want to play for Endicott College and Coach Quirk. I chose to play Division III because it was easier for me to balance academics and lacrosse. Talking to many guys at the Division I level made me real-ize that it was more of a job than a sport that I care much about. I felt I made the correct decision in choosing Endicott and a Division III school. – Nick Pinciaro

erik mangrumEndicott from day one to me has been all about being a family. I come from a family where no matter what we are there for each other. Going to Endicott gave me that same exact feeling. From the day I set foot on campus everyone from the staff to students were lending a hand in every way possible. Most coaches at other institu-tions I visited didn’t even compare to Coach Quirk and his staff. The first time I met them, I knew I was going to play for them. Coach Quirk kept emphasizing how much family meant to Endicott as a whole and all of the athletic teams. The program he has built really revolves around being a family. Saying “family” after each huddle really means something. It is not just a word; it is how you are going to feel playing for the Gulls. . – Erik Mangrum

It was not a hard decision when choosing to attend Endicott for my undergraduate education. When I first visited the school I immediately knew that this was the place for me; with its strong athletic history, internship program, and beautiful campus, I gladly accepted. After having a great undergraduate experience, I decided to stay for my MBA. Endicott has always stood by their motto of academics before athletics. I see that a lot in Division III and I stand by the same belief. I wanted to be in an environment where I could excel academically, and play in a competitve lacross pro-gram. Endicott and the Division III lacrosse program have provided me with both of those. – Sam Ozycz

Packed with athletic depth, top-down leadership, and an engraved tradition of excellence, the Endicott men’s

lacrosse program enters the 2013 season ready to once again achieve greatness when the Gulls return to the field this spring.

Endicott’s coaching staff, led by 16-year veteran head coach Sean Quirk, continues to set a program standard of winning the conference championship year-in and year-out, despite an early exit from the CCC playoffs in 2012. After their semifinal loss in the conference tournament, the Gulls went on to win their third ECAC DIII New England Championship with convinc-ing wins over Curry and the University of New England, but coming into this spring aspirations for a seventh CCC title and NCAA DIII Tournament appearance remains the goal.

“The culmination of last season, when you’re in the heat of it, was not a great season overall. We didn’t meet our standard which is winning the conference championship,” said Quirk. “At the same time, our guys showed resilience in beating Springfield who was #12 in the country and Eastern Connecticut who both made the NCAA Tournament as well as playing five other teams that went to the tournament. Some-times you take one step backwards like we did last year before you take two steps forward like I expect us to do this year.”

After ranking eighth among all NCAA DIII programs in scoring offense (14.76 goals per game), including 12th in man-up offense, and 36th in the country in scoring defense (7.57) during the 2011 season which saw Endicott reach the

second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Gulls dipped last spring and fell out of the top-50 in each of those categories. This year’s squad, however, boasts depth at every position and Quirk contends that his players have committed themselves to moving past the tribulations that plagued their 2012 season with dedication, hard-work, and a renewed sense of account-ability.

“Just a few weeks into our preseason I can see how deep we are at the attack, midfield, defense, and goalie positions. Our transition game is back to what it was, our offense is clicking on all cylinders, and the defense has been much improved as well.”

Fans can expect Endicott’s forward progress this spring to be led by four senior captains in Kyle Burke, Peter Erickson, Con-nor McCormack, and Ryan Sutherland. Elected by the players unanimously this past fall, Quirk views his captains as adjunct members of the program’s already standout coaching staff.

“Our captains are on the same page with what we are trying to accomplish. They are 100% working hard, 100% holding their teammates and themselves accountable, and they want to come out of this season with a CCC Championship and a run in the NCAA Tournament. We are very proud of them.”

The Blue and Green’s offensive attack will be led by McCor-mack, a pure goal-scorer who scored just 10 goals in his junior year because of injury cut his season short after just seven

games. McCormack was named to the All-CCC Second Team in 2011 after posting 42 goals, six assists, and 48 points and will be relied upon for leadership to a strong core of younger attackmen. Joining McCormack are a pair of high-impact sophomore players in Kyle Weber and Nick Pinciaro who both earned CCC Rookie of the Week honors in the freshman campaigns. Pinciaro also recently earned All-NEILA Preseason Honorable Mention as he scored eight goals with seven assists while Weber tied fellow sophomore for fifth on the team with 14 goals last spring. Newcomers Mitchell Tapley, a two-time high school All-American from Falmouth Maine, and Scott McCormack, a product of Brien McMahon High School out of Norwalk, Connecticut where he was All-State and All-Confer-ence, as well as returner Mark Cornacchio, who took the 2012 season off, will all compete for starting roles and provide depth at attack.

The midfield position will showcase another one of Endicott’s captains, Peter Erickson, who will take advantage of some new rule changes as a two-way midfielder. Erickson, a two-time CCC Academic All-Conference honoree, totaled 22 points on 16 goals and six assists while scooping 32 ground balls last year. All-NEILA Honorable Mention sophomore Harrison Cotter has also proven to be a top two-way midfielder and a valuable attacker with nine goals, 12 assists, and 31 ground balls in his freshman season. Jeremy and Jonathan Morgan, Brendan Hunter, Jon Siderewicz, Chris Janelle, and Jonny Kovach are all returning midfielders expected to play a major role in either

an offensive or defensive capacity this season. Junior Chris Murphy, who also plays on Endicott’s club hockey team, will provide Endicott’s man-up offense with some spark.

Endicott’s long-stick midfielders feature two captains in seniors Kyle Burke and Ryan Sutherland who are entering their fourth season in a starting roles and junior Christopher Summers contributing at midfield and on face-offs. Burke, two-time CCC Academic All-Conference student-athlete in Computer Information Systems, ranked third on the team in caused turnovers (22) and sixth in ground balls (37) while adding seven points on the offensive end. Sutherland totaled 18 caused turnovers and 31 ground balls during his 2012 season.

All-CCC First Teamer and ECAC DIII New England All-Star Breck Merritt leads Endicott’s close defenseman with senior Anthony Martignetti, sophomore Will Farfalla, and transfer and former high school All-American Lucas Paratore expected to make their presence felt on the defensive end. Merritt, who comes into the 2013 season with All-NEILA Preseason Second Team accolades, shut down opposing offenses with a team-high 39 caused turnovers with 75 ground balls. Martignetti, a three-year starter, had his best season as a Gull last year with 14 caused turnovers and 24 ground balls in 16 games played, 14 of which he started. Farfalla appeared in 18 games last year, starting three, causing seven turnovers and scooping 20 ground balls.

In the cage, senior goalie Tom Burke returns after going 10-9 with an 8.16 goals against average, a 0.515 save percentage, and 135 total saves last year. Burke started 19 of Endicott’s 20 games last year but will expect competition for playing time with the addition of Hartwick transfer Nick Triano and freshman Cameron Bell.

The Endicott men’s lacrosse program continues to be among the nation’s leaders in strength of schedule as the Gulls will once again take on six programs that are ranked in the top-20 in the coun-try according to the USILA. This includes #4 Tufts (April 9th), #6 RIT (March 17th), #7 Stevens (February 24th), #12 Western New England (April 24th), #14 Springfield (March 23rd), and #17 Bowdoin (April 20th). Amherst and Eastern Connecticut, who received votes towards a top-20 rank-ing and made last year’s NCAA Tournament, are also on the 2013 schedule.

Sean Quirk

The concept of the Endicott men’s lacrosse “family” began 16 years ago when Gulls head coach Sean Quirk took over a

program in its third year of existence back in the fall of 1997.

Quirk had come from a national powerhouse in Springfield College where he was a two-time All-American goalie and competed on a Falcons squad that won the 1994 NCAA Division II Championship and lost in the national title game one year later. After graduat-ing, he stayed on as an assistant coach and Springfield continued to win games.

“In all my years at Springfield we were a close-knit team,” said Quirk. “That closeness always helped us win games to build the tradition that exists there. The alumni would even come back to help mentor the undergraduate players and when I started coaching at Endicott, I knew I wanted to create that family atmosphere.”With a roster of just 19 student-athletes in his first season, Quirk knew the team would struggle at times and wins alone weren’t going to keep them all together.

“In the first letter I sent to each of my players on that first team I stressed to them that this is a family. We’re going to have our ups and downs, we’re going to get on one another, but we’re going to support and love one another. That is something we have maintained and talked about every day at our practices, in the locker room, and in games.”

Words like accountability, dedication, hard-work, and discipline have been the foundation for the Endicott men’s

lacrosse program for 16 years. Quirk and his coaching staff have taught his players lifelong lessons over the years; about how to be good man, a good husband, and a good father by the time they leave Endicott.

Quirk’s coaching staff is even peppered with Endicott alumni who have returned to the nest because that family atmosphere now exists. Cur-rent assistant coaches include three-time All-American Eric Hagarty ’10, Steve Batchelor ’03, Joey Gugino ’09, and masters degree recipient Mike Sciamanna ’10. Former Gulls men’s lacrosse stars turned assistant coach also include Paul Lord ’04, Ryan Fraine ’06, Jeremy Gatta ’08, and Bob Crossett ’11.

“The head coach tends to get either all the glory or all the blame when it comes to wins and losses, but without that dedicated staff of coaches we can’t get anything done. They are the ones grunting out the hard work and they believe in what we do.”

Quirk comes into the 2013 season just one win shy of 200 career coaching victories which would make him the 20th NCAA DIII head coach all-time to reach that milestone. While win number 200, another CCC Championship and berth into the NCAA Tournament, or the elusive national championship would be a great accomplishment, the glory that Quirk continues to relish in is much more meaningful.

“The thing you I appreciate equally to the wins are the relationships that come out of being a part of this program. We have our annual alumni game and social and I get to see our former players get married, have children, and succeed in the real world. These people are special to me and to my family and that really is the biggest reward from coaching.”
