The 2010 men’s soccer team will sport a roster of 19 freshmen and sophomores eager to further prog-ress a program that has increased its win total each of the past two seasons. This young crop of play-ers, along with ten returning juniors and seniors, including captains Chris Serpa (Bristol, R.I.) and Bryan Lee (Rockport, Mass.), will look to im-prove upon last season’s 7-10 record and return to the TCCC playoffs for the first time since 2006.

The Gulls finished just outside of the conference playoffs in 2009, but that could have been the product of bad luck having lost five TCCC matches by one goal. Four of those five seniors will be on the roster in 2010 to provide leadership for the large underclassmen representation on the squad. Seniors Bryan Lee and Joe Ryan (Peabody, Mass.) were every day starters last year, with Lee scoring two goals with three assists and Ryan playing all 17 matches in the backfield. Lee was also named the TCCC Honorable Mention team for his efforts. Fellow seniors Adam Skerpan (Smithfield, R.I.), Julio Lo-pez (Laromam, Dominican Republic), and Gregory Wilson (York, Maine) all provided depth off the bench in 2009.

The Gulls welcome back sopho-more Kevin Ivester (Topsfield, Mass.) who was the team’s second lead-ing goal-scorer with four markers. Ivester, a TCCC Offensive Player of the Week winner, scored a game-winning goal in the 80th minute in a thrilling 2-1 victory over TCCC foe Curry College on October 17th. He ended the season with four goals, an assist, and nine total points for an Endicott team that finished just

outside of the conference playoffs for the third straight year.

Other returning sophomores include goalkeeper Daniel Higgins (Kingstown, R.I.) who started all 17 matches and had a 1.53 goals against average on the season. Of his seven wins from 2009, four of those were shutouts against Regis, Nichols, East-ern Nazarene, and eventual TCCC champions Western New England College. He compiled 56 saves be-tween the posts. Fellow sophomores Kevin Gnecco (North Hampton, N.H.) and Chris Serpa will return to play in front of Higgins as crucial parts of the Gulls backfield.

Other goal-scoring options in the sophomore class include midfielder Craig Jameson (Bedford, N.H.) and striker Robbie DiTommaso (Farming-ton, Conn.) who both saw significant playing time last season. Jameson netted a goal and had two assists while DiTommaso scored twice and tallied an assist in his freshman season. Those two players will have to be a presence on the pitch, as Endicott will be without leading goal-scorer and conference Rookie of the Year Colin Doody (Wethersfield, Conn.) who became ineligible after his nine goals, four assists season.

Head Coach Darren Murray, once again, brought in a large freshman recruiting class to round out his roster. Nine freshmen will join the Endicott community and hope to make an immediate impact on a Gulls squad that is ready to climb the conference standings.

Looking ahead to the fall schedule, Coach Murray has challenged his team with a non-conference sched-ule against opponents who have

frequently reached the NCAA Tournament. Endi-cott’s home opener on September 2 is against 2009 MASCAC Champions Salem State who reached the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament. The very next game for the Gulls will be on the road on September 6 against a Bridgewater State squad that has reached the NCAA Tournament two out of the past fi ve seasons. Once TCCC play begins, the schedule does not get any easier with match up against 2009 conference winners Western New England on September 18. The Golden Bears will look to exact some revenge on the Gulls defeated after losing 1-0 in double overtime to Endicott last season. Endicott will close out their 2010 season with three home matches against conference foes Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, and New England College at the end of October.

Darren MurrayDarren Murray begins his fourth season as the head coach at Endicott College. Murray has posted an 15-32-4 record in his three previous seasons.

Darren Murray came to Endicott with an excellent soccer background. Originally from Ireland, Murray has played and coached at the professional, collegiate (Divisions I-III), and club levels. Darren began playing professionally in 1988 for St. Patrick’s Athletic in the League of Ireland Profes-sional. After four seasons with St. Patrick’s Athletic, Murray attended the Football Association of Ireland’s Soccer School of Excellence and played as an amateur for St. James’ Gate.

Darren came to the United States in 1993, where he attended and played for Massassoit Community College. While at MCC, Murray appeared in two NJCAA Final Fours and was honored as a two-time All Conference and All-New England Regional recipient as a goalkeeper. In 1995, Murray transferred to Mercyhurst College where he led the Lakers to two Elite Eight appearances and one trip to the NCAA Final Four. Individually, Murray was an All Conference and All-Regional member during both his seasons with Mercyhurst.

In 1999, Murray returned to his Alma Mata in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he served as the assistant coach until 2002. During his four seasons as an assistant, Mercyhurst made four NCAA Tournament appearances, won four Conference Championships and were Nationally Ranked under his guidance.

In 2002, Darren took a staff coaching position with the New England Revolution Soccer Academy of the MLS. Darren’s other coaching accolades include the top job of the South Shore United Blazers, a staff coach for the Massachusetts Olympic Development program, and the goalkeeper coach at Division I Boston College.

Darren came to Endicott after a stint at Newbury College, where he took over the Nighthawks program in 2005. Murray won a confer-ence title for Newbury in his fi rst season, while also being voted the Newbury College “Coach of the Year.”

Murray and his wife Jill reside in Salem, Massachusetts with their two sons Keiron (6) and Luke (3).
