The mission of Endicott College is to instill in students an understanding of and an appreciation for professional and liberal studies. Deeply woven within this philosophy is the concept of applied learning, which has been the hallmark of Endicott. Linking classroom and off-campus work experience through required internships remains the most distinguishing feature of the College.

Endicott has a vision for the total development of the individual within a community that fosters an appreciation of diversity, international awareness, community service, and moral and ethical values. Endicott is an innovative and vibrant, student-centered institution that supports undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of knowledge.

Common threads run through the fabric of the Endicott experience: increased self-confidence, stronger professional skills and technological competencies, and perhaps the most valued of all, lives open to change.

The men’s assistant basketball coach, Reggie Hobbs, played a pivotal role in my decision to attend Endicott College. After briefly explaining all that Endicott had to offer academically and athletically, we scheduled a time for a campus visit. Upon my arrival, I was instantly impressed with the campus scenery and environment. Following a brief campus tour, I was introduced to a few administrators and faculty members. They were extremely welcoming and generous to have me at their institution. Likewise, I had an opportunity to meet a few of the Endicott basketball players; they too were very open and friendly. Ultimately, it was at that moment in time that I realized Endicott might be the perfect place for me. – Lance Greene

bennett knowltonWhile on my college search, I visited a handful of schools. My goal was to find a school rich in athletic tradition, a challenging academic program, and a campus I could see myself living at for the next four years. Out of all the schools I visited, I could not find one that of-fered all three, until I visited Endicott. Since then, Endicott has been a perfect fit for me. It has provided me with a competitive basketball program, a beautiful campus, and an academic program that will better prepare me for my future. I could not be happier with my decision to be a student-athlete at Endicott. – Bennett Knowlton

Before coming to Endicott, I attended a Division 1 university where athletics were the only important aspect. Endicott, however, was the perfect fit for me academically, socially, and athletically. I was allowed to continue playing basketball and still be able to focus on my academics. Division III provided me with an opportunity to be a normal college kid all while playing against some of the top competition. - Tyler Burkhart

Last year’ s Endicott men’s basketball team bested a competitive field to win the 2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship and in the fourth year under head coach Phil Rowe, the Gulls are fully entrenched in a new basketball philosophy that could potentially set them up for long-term success. Bringing a conference title back to Beverly after overcoming a season of trials and tribulations, injury, and growing pains for younger players showed a great deal of character for a men’s basketball program that historically has been strong since Endicott went co-educational in the early 1990s.

“The competitiveness and understanding of what it takes to play at that level was remarkable,” said Rowe, who won his first CCC Championship and guided his team to a 20-9 overall record and a NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time since 2006. “This team has a commitment to making them-selves and each other better so they can taste that success again.”

That commitment began last spring shortly after the team’s 72-71 overtime loss to Oswego State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, a game Endicott led for nearly 30 minutes until Lakers forced overtime. A victory would have been Endi-cott’s first NCAA Tournament win in program history. Led by the four captains for 2012-13 season, senior Lance Greene and juniors Tyler Burkhart, Bennett Knowlton, and Lachlan Magee, the Gulls directed their focus on winning not just on the court,

but off the court in the classroom, the weight room, and in the community.

Greene, a three-time All-CCC honoree including two First Team awards in each of the past two seasons, is the lone senior on the Gulls roster in 2012-13. His athletic accomplish-ments speak for themselves as Greene, Endicott’s starting point guard since his rookie season, has averaged 14.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.9 steals per game for his career. Last winter, Greene, with four other starters scoring in double figures, had a career year with 108 assists, nearly four assists per game. As it stands at the start of the regular sea-son, Greene is just 85 points shy of 1,000 for his career as he looks to join eight former Endicott men’s basketball student-athletes who have already accomplished the feat.

“Lance is a quality young man and student-athlete. He has embraced the whole experience at Endicott and his basketball work ethic resonates throughout the entire team.”

Burkhart is now a two-year captain in just his junior year and has shown incredibly adversity after overcoming injuries in each of his first two seasons. Burkhart finally got healthy at the start of 2012 and finished the year averaging 5.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 0.8 steals off the bench. Similarly, Knowlton plays a major role off the bench as he has appeared in all 56 of Endicott’s games since his rookie year in 2010-11, averaging 18.6 minutes per game. Knowlton, a junior guard with 351 career points (6.3 ppg), enters his first season

as a captain.

Endicott’s fourth captain junior guard/forward Lachlan Ma-gee has been an integral part of the Gulls offense, averaging 13.3 points per game, and has accumulated 746 career points over his first two seasons. With another productive year, Magee could join Greene in the 1,000-point club later on this season. A 2011-12 All-CCC Honorable Mention player, Magee along with Greene averaged over 30 minutes played per game and ranked in the top-ten in the CCC in scoring.

Endicott’s sophomore class, consisting of CCC Rookie of the Year and First Team forward Andre Makris, All-CCC Honor-able Mention guard John Henault, and big man Matt Kneece, returns and will be counted on heavily in 2012-13.

“Makris, Henault, and Kneece are very good players. I chal-lenged them last spring to focus on getting better and they responded by putting in a tremendous amount of hard work which has set the foundation to compete at the highest level in the CCC.”

A four-time CCC Rookie of the Week, Makris averaged 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while his 49 blocks ranked him among the league leaders. Henault, a three-time CCC Rookie of the Week honoree, was electric from beyond the arc in his rookie season making 53-of-123 (43.1%) attempts while playing shutdown defense on some of the conference’s best guards. Kneece provided an intimidating presence in the paint,

blocking 13 shots in just 11 minutes a game, and will be expected to take the next step in his development this winter.

Rowe’s incoming freshman class is talented and creates a deep bench at every position. Sebago, Maine native (Cheverus) Shawn Grover and North Granby, Con-necticut’s (Granby) Nick Mazzotta have the opportunity to battle for minutes and will have significant contributions at the forward position by season’s end. Guards Matt Ellis (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy), James Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus), Eddie Danek (Suffield, Conn./Suffield), and Dan Powers (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) all looked solid in the preseason and will also provide significant depth for the Endicott bench.

“All of our freshmen look good. They are learning and improving everyday which tells me their basketball intelligence is high.”

Endicott’s season kicks off at the Rivier Tournament where the Gulls will face Framingham State in round one on Friday, November 16th at 8:00 pm. The team’s home opener will also be their confer-ence schedule opener as Endicott and Salve Regina meet in a rematch of last year’s CCC Champion-ship on November 28th at 7:30 pm in MacDonald Gymnasium. After an eight-game stretch to wrap up the fall semester, the Blue and Green start 2013 with North Shore rival and regionally acclaimed Salem State on January 2nd before getting into the bulk of their league schedule. Saturday, Febru-ary 16th versus Eastern Nazarene is the final regular season home game and Senior Day with the CCC Tournament slated to begin with quarterfinal action on Tuesday, February 19th. The 2013 CCC Championship will be held on Saturday, February 23rd.

Phil Rowe

We often remind each other proudly about our famous tagline ‘Discover the Experience’,” says Gulls men’s basketball head

coach Phil Rowe, who enters his fourth year at the helm of the pro-gram after capturing last season’s Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship. “But what I’ve found is that motto really resonates with the players that come through our program. Our guys will learn and grow over the course of their time at Endicott and come out of the experience as marketable men with a strong education.”

Rowe, a veteran coach with over 25 years of head and assistant coaching experience, knows what it takes to win with 266 victories to his name. While the X’s and O’s may appear to be the answer to why Rowe has been successful over his career, it is much more than that. Rowe and his coaching staff work tirelessly to offer Endicott’s players a high-quality collegiate experience, they inspire passion for the game of basketball, and the team’s success has been a direct result of those efforts.

“When we recruit for our program, we first take a snapshot of Endicott’s profile from an academic standpoint and create a pool of applicants. Then we’ll review our basketball program needs and what we aspire to be, which is one of the best in New England at every position on the court, and recruit on the philosophy that we are a full court pressing team.”

Rowe’s approach to the game has produced an Endicott team that in the 2011-12 season led the Commonwealth Coast Confer-ence in scoring (77.6 ppg), scoring margin (+6.2 ppg), and field goal percentage (.457) as well as several defensive categories like opponent field goal percentage (.378) and blocked shots (5.2 bpg).

“We want our roster to be multidimensional players, guys who can play all positions on the court. On game day, we want 10-14 guys ready to go because our style dictates spurts of 4-5 minutes of hard, aggressive play on the court. We recruit young men who want to be part of a team atmosphere and who can buy into our system, which we believe is a successful one.”

Rowe’s philosophy on recruiting student-athletes also applies to his coach-ing staff who he relies upon to cover a gamut of responsibilities ranging from recruiting to video exchange and everything in between. Second-year assistant coach Seth Stantial works with the wings and guards on skill development at practice while acting as Rowe’s right-hand man during office hours. First-year assistants Stephan Kerby, a former professional and stand-out collegiate player is in charge of developing our forwards, and Andrew Habermehl, who works with both forwards and guards during all our sessions, are also vital to continuity at practices and games.

“In the end, the players that come through our program recognize the sup-port that exists around them at Endicott. We embrace family, education, and the pursuit of excellence through sport, and we believe that philosophy will lead us to great things by the end of the season.”
